In the 2018 Korean drama My Mister, Lee Sun-kyun stars as a man who seems to have it all — a stable career, the respect of his colleagues and a loving family — but is in actuality burdened by the pressures of providing for his loved ones and employees while navigating an extortion scheme and suspicions of a workplace affair. Beset with a melancholic disposition, at one point he stumbles on some train tracks and contemplates remaining there. It’s a fleeting thought but a poignant moment in the critically acclaimed series, which won best drama at the Baeksang Arts Awards and was a highlight in Lee’s notable career.
That Lee — one of Korea’s most popular actors who earned worldwide mainstream recognition through Parasite — would be involved in any sort of real-life scandal was nearly unthinkable. He had been married (to actress Jeon Hye-jin) almost as long as he’d been famous,...

A few years ago, actor Lee Sun-kyun had a major role in a film that made history: director Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy thriller Parasite, which racked up multiple Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It was the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. But now Lee’s life has come to a tragic early end. South Korea’s emergency office has confirmed that Lee has passed away at the age of 48, and it’s suspected that he committed suicide.

Among the most difficult tasks a film could possibly tackle, surely “making the audience fall in love with the people who sell babies for cash” would have to be somewhere near the top of the list. It’s easy to feel the ice dripping down the audience’s collective back throughout the early minutes of South Korean film Broker, determined in our collective judgment against these guys. Even as the characters get in the odd joke, Japanese writer-director-editor Hirokazu Kore-eda’s script never lets us forget who and what these people are.
But Kore-eda is a sorcerer of human emotion. Through tender, attentive observation and a fair dose of sentimentality, Broker’s protagonists become the bedrock of a strange little family, an odd band of misfits we root for, even as a sense of dread tugs at the heart. A forlorn story injected with so much love and far more comedy than one might expect,...

When the Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced on April 14, Twitter positively exploded with excitement over the news that Lee Ji-eun would make her Riviera debut with Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Broker in Competition. The Korean actress, singer and songwriter—popularly known as Iu—has a legion of fans, including 26 million followers on Instagram, and has been described as a national treasure at home. She may now be well poised for crossover success with her first commercial film.
The first film from Kore-eda since the Palme d’Or winning Shoplifters in 2018 is also his first movie to be made in Korea. Backed by Asian powerhouse Cj Enm and starring Parasite’s Song Kang-ho, Broker concerns the peculiarly Korean phenomenon of “baby boxes”— drop-off points where people who are unable to raise children can deposit their babies anonymously.

Netflix continues to enjoy a busy summer, whether by expanding its library of titles or setting up new original series and returning seasons of shows. At times, it can be hard to round up the best new content on Netflix in any given month, especially given the speed by which the streaming giant adds it. However, Collider have reviewed the offerings for June and have identified nine of the best shows to enjoy.
One of Collider’s picks is Hannibal, with the Bryan Fuller series having quickly built up an audience on Netflix this month, especially now that all three seasons of the show are available. Of course, longtime fans won’t be surprised that people are loving the dark and twisted drama, which puts a new spin on the familiar cast of characters and plots from Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter series and the movies set within the same universe.

As we continue to make our way into June, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a less eventful month for new Netflix releases than May was. But that certainly doesn’t mean viewers have been left wanting for fresh content to sink their teeth into. Far from it, in fact.
We’ve seen some great new additions to the platform over the past few days already and this coming week looks to continue the trend. Nevertheless, there’s still a lot to get excited about over the coming days and here’s what’s on the way:
