Sombre music accompanies a brisk beach day as we focus on a man, who appears to be talking to himself, or maybe us. With actor-writer-director Matt Kane’s feature debut Auggie, there is much more than meets the eye, but you will have to put some specs on to see it.
Felix, an architect forced into retirement, brings a whole lot of awkwardness to his send off speech – you can feel his colleagues toes curl and eyes roll as they frankly couldn’t care this man will no longer be at their firm. After a few forced smiles and a somewhat clichéd farewell, instead of the classic company watch as a parting gift he receives a high-tech pair of glasses in the hope a buddy or rather an augmented reality companion will keep his loneliness at bay during retirement. Felix soon realizes that ‘Auggie’ isn’t any old projection visible...

"You have a new perspective." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an odd indie film titled Auggie, the feature directorial debut of English actor / filmmaker Matt Kane. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival this year, and also played at the Newport Beach, Greenwich, and Provincetown Film Festivals. From the looks of it, this seems like another kooky film much like Lars and the Real Girl about a man who falls in love with a fake woman. In Auggie, Richard Kind plays Felix Greystone, who is forced into early retirement and falls in love with an augmented reality companion, damaging his relationship with his wife and daughter. The cast includes Christen Harper as Auggie, plus Larisa Oleynik, Christine Donlon, Susan Blackwell, Steven M. Robertson, and James C. Victor. This seems way more sad and depressing than expected, but it's supposed to be a cautionary tale about technology and our addiction to it.

Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to the Richard Kind sci-fi movie Auggie from Myriad Pictures.
Directed and written by Matt Kane and co-written and produced by Marc Underhill of Thundercane Productions, Auggie follows early retiree Felix Greystone (Kind) who falls in love with an augmented reality companion, to the detriment of his relationship with his wife and daughter.
At his “early retirement” party, Felix is given a pre-release version of an “Auggie,” a pair of augmented reality smart glasses that project a perfectly human companion onto his world. When Felix’s wife Anne gets a promotion and his daughter Grace gets serious with her boyfriend, Felix suddenly feels very alone. He opens up to his new companion and is recognized and appreciated by her, and begins to fall for her.
Larisa Oleynik, Susan Blackwell and newcomer Christen Harper also star.
Auggie made its world premiere at Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival 2019 and later screened as part of the official selection in the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival.
Said Kane, “Marc and I are thrilled to be partnering with Samuel Goldwyn Films, a company with deep roots in the world of quality film. We couldn’t think of a better fit to bring this film to audiences in the U.S.”
The deal was negotiated by Ben Feingold from Samuel Goldwyn with Kirk D’Amico from Myriad on behalf of the filmmakers.
Kind’s credits include Spin City, Gotham, American Dad and Amazon’s Red Oaks as well as such movies as Oscar Best Picture winner Ago, Pixar’s Inside Out and the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man.
