A warm, comic, character-focused episode with a real family feel. But can we move on from the Ed/Kelly story now?
wolfstar_imdb4 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Enjoyed this episode, its heart is really in the right place. The Ed/Kelly parts are the weakest - Seth Macfarlane is unfortunately a weak link in the cast, and I had the impression that Ed/Kelly had already worked through their issues and moved on at the end of last season. So I was surprised at how Ed was written in this episode, it seemed to be a step back in terms of character development - although he repairs it and makes good in the end. The teacher is a welcome and well-cast addition, but I thought Kelly was written as too unreasonable with him in a couple of scenes.

Halston Sage is great, Scott Grimes's comic acting is strong, and further development of the Isaac/Finn storyline is welcome (even if the resolution of the dispute was overly pat). I love the tone of this episode - warm, comic and most of all familial - and how the focus is split so well between the characters, all of whom it's enjoyable to spend time with. (I also appreciate the broader use of supporting characters in this ep - we learn more about Dan, a new bridge officer is introduced, Dr Finn's kids are featured again, the bartender and Moosha are used sensibly, and even Bortus's child makes an appearance.) Hopefully we can move on from the Ed/Kelly stuff now.

Getting reacquainted with the crew
mergirliliana20 January 2019
This was a fine episode and while I see many people complain on its dramatic nature I have to say I have no complaints. This is exactly the episode we needed considering that it had been a year since the first season aired, we needed to get reacquainted with the Orville crew. This obviously wasn't the greatest episode the Orville had to offer but I certainly don't thinks it's bad enough for some of these harsh reviews.

Well written, heartfelt, hilarious episode, though lacking on science fiction.
Atlas_Redux21 January 2019
Yes, I can see why some does not like the lack of actual science fiction in this episode. Should we start giving bad critics to ST:TNG as well then, because the show had a ton of non-scifi episodes? No, of course not. In fact, some of the strongest episodes were exactly that. Exploring the people.

That said I won't say this is a masterpiece. But it's funny. VERY funny. It has good development of the characters. It has some heartfelt moments. It's well written, well acted.

Again, no masterpiece, but to say this is a bad episode?

Prrrrrrf, give me a break. I will in fact say it's a GREAT way to start off the season! Give me that development! It's not even rushed, just an easing in, and doing it well.

Far from a bad episode, not a fantastic episode, but I think it was great. I laughed, I smiled, enjoy every bit of it. Wonderful start to the season.

It was OK
dani-rossean4 January 2019
The acting was great but the story was a little dull. It would have been better as a mid-season filler. The 'family drama' felt a bit too ordinary for a sci-fi season opener.

That said, it was still much better than other current sci-fi shows, but that's a pretty low bar to beat at this point.

Playing to it's strengths
Elewis119531 December 2018
Seinfeld meets Star trek. (Ironic because Jason Alexander appears in this one).

It sounds terrible, but that's the Orville's strength. They can just be people. You can have boredom and the occasional hangover and a captain with a slight drinking problem and bouts of depression and Aliens who say the wrong thing and bad breakups and still have outer-space and high technology.

Not that Star-Trek didn't explore those things, they did, here and there, but never an entire episode on what goes wrong with relationships and never with this much humor.

The best thing about this show is that it never takes itself seriously but the characters in it take themselves seriously. It's real people, sometimes flawed, entertainingly interacting with each other with all the benefits of odd holodeck programs and strange aliens. It's not great TV and it's not Emmy material, but it's a fun episode and this was a good start to season two.

Ten stars for the episode. Show still gets a "fun" 8 from me but a few more episodes like this one and I might bump it to a 9.

Season 2 Episode 1...Struck Out!
bhfred131 December 2018
Season 2 episode 1 should have came out swinging, instead it was a Strikeout! With ST: Discovery Season 2 airing Jan 17th The Orville should have rocked, but it was more of a dull soap opera. All 5 stories in this episode were boring and predictable. This was not a good start. Having 1 main story and maybe 1 side story is the way to go. This episode was rushed and unnecessary. Season 1 looked hopeful but after this episode, I see cancelation on the horizon.

SF needs more of this to release, tension

Sometimes the all too serious SF needs a good release to relieve the pressure of moral correctness.

A whole episode of Captain Picard Day - and that's a good thing
big_brother_19844 January 2019
Remember "Captain Picard Day" from TNG? This is where they got the balance between awkwardness and comedy right, while still keeping believable characters that live in a future reality.

The Orville writers might have have screwed this up by tipping the balance into cringeworthy embarrasement or latrine comedy. But they didn't, and started season 2 with a whole episode observing human behavior. As always, not being predictable might not appeal to everyone.

The Orville keeps being more Trek than the current official movies or series. Good Star Trek always was a people show, and defining the crew's personalities is a good start for the season.

The likeable cast deliver a fun but flawed episode... be careful writers
antony-15 February 2019
The cast make this episode enjoyable. They are likeable, and they have the camaraderie to lift this episode above its script. It's the little moments in the writing that give the episode that special something - like Issac flat out telling Claire she's a bad mother.

The issue with the script is this is three B stories. Star Trek - which FYI, Orville might be aping slight if you hadn't noticed maybe - had the A story and the B story. It's a format that worked for many years.

All three elements here are solid B stories. But three B stories do not an episode make.

I am very concerned about Kelly as a character too. Her relationship with the captain was the weakest element of season one, and it was all her character was defined by.

I had one wish for change in season two: she becomes her own character. Clearly that will not be the case.

The melodrama in the season opener as well as the actual lack of core story has me a bit fearful for season two and its ability to gain traction. Majority Rule from season one would have been a great way to kick off the season. That's the level the show needs to aim for.

Relieved to see The Orville return
MrGoog31 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
******SPOILER ALERT******

We waited 388 days for a new episode. I re-watched the 1st Season on the DVD set (which has excellent Special Features) and waited. I checked the Web's info on the series and waited. This episode was worth the wait.

The Ja'loja itself was a minor part of the story, but it was a good excuse for the main part of the episode: relationships on the Orville. In "Old Wounds", we learned that Maclans urinate only once per year, so we should not be surprised that Maclans have made a big ceremony out of relieving oneself (I write while suppressing a snicker). Indeed, Ja'loja means 'The Great Release' (okay, I snickered again), and the Maclan chooses a special place for The Great Release, which the Maclans see as a cleansing of the spirit (and some other body area -- okay, let's get serious now) and the start of a new year of hope. The Ja'loja is attended by family and friends, which set up the key point for the episode: those attending the Ja'loja must be accompanied by someone. Thus, each non-Maclan who was invited by Bortus must ask someone to accompany him or her. As we saw from the beginning, some of the officers have a hard time with relationships.

Star Trek reference - Olix, the bartender in the ship's Lounge/Mess Hall, was played by Jason Alexander, who played Kurros in an episode of Star Trek - Voyager.

Seth MacFarlane reference - Once again, we saw Dann, the bulb-headed humanoid who put Muzak in the ship's elevators. He is played by Mike Henry, who has done a lot of work with MacFarlane (including the voice of Cleveland Brown). Apparently, we will see Dann many times in the 2nd Season.

We see that Ed is spending too much time drinking alone, because he still desires Kelly. It's understandable that he still loves her and can't resist the hope that they could reunite. But, as Kelly said at the end of "Mad Idolatry", they need to move on from the past. Kelly already has; she is dating Cassius, the teacher for Claire's sons and the other kids on board. Obviously, she still has fond feelings for Ed, but she isn't stuck in the past like Ed. When he used a shuttle for a "drive-by" - peeking into Kelly's quarters during her date with Cassius - Kelly was justifiably enraged by that stalking. Fortunately, at the end, Ed moved on by, apparently, starting a relationship with Lieutenant Janel Tyler, the Orville's new dark-matter cartographer. Speaking of Janel......

When Janel came aboard, Gordon acted like a high-school boy when the new-in-school blond girl sits next to him. He also has difficulty with relationships, so he turned to the so-called Girl Guru: John. Most of John's advice was sensible, but that multi-zipper jacket looked like a reject from 1980s fashion. However, after all of John's encouragement, Gordon chickened out at the last minute, like many others have done in that situation. But I still have hope for Gordon - if he ditches that jacket.

Bortus, seeing that Alara has trouble with guys, became a yenta (indeed, look it up) and arranged a blind date for her: Dann. He also is a fumbler in relationships, but Alara asked him to accompany her to the Ja'loja.

Kelly and Cassius go along well until Cassius stumbled. He also has a history of relationship trouble - in his case, a divorce. But who helped save the relationship by advising Cassius? Ed, proving that, finally, he has moved on from Kelly.

Another relationship examined by this episode: parents and kids. Marcus Finn has become an adolescent; in the 25th Century, 'adolescent' still means 'rebellious pain-in-the-butt.' His new friend, James, is a troublemaker who hacks into the ship's synthesizer to get a bottle of vodka. When Marcus, James, and another blockhead boy are caught with the vodka, Claire is furious. However, James' parents have been fooled by him into believing that he is a smart, upstanding boy. Isaac proves that James hacked into the computer to plant a phony report card (all A's???) and, thus, was the one who got the vodka. Claire, showing her gratitude, invites Isaac to accompany her to the Ja'loja.

This episode had no intense interplanetary conflict or heavy, thought-provoking issue to ponder. But it was a wonderful exploration of relationships that presented the officers of the Orville as very believable - and very interesting - characters. Kudos to Seth MacFarlane, who wrote and directed this episode.

Very safe episode
breadcrumbs-471571 January 2019
Very safe episode, not something to expect from a first episode of the season.. didn't really hype up any sort of plot points or show any sort of jump from season 1? The sci fi elements of season 1 were incredible and hopefully we'll see more of those self contained episodes in this season, but this episode just wasn't it. It felt like a filler episode meant for the middle of the season and that would of been fine, I wouldn't be surprised if Fox moved this episode to episode 1 like what they did with firefly...

Not really sci-fi, not even comedy - and that may be even good :-)
pkpera31 December 2018
I never reviewed this serial, even if watched complete first season. Was surprised seeing that there is season 2 (positively) . And this is actually one man show in big part. Set MacFarlane is writer, director and main actor. Sci-fi's Woody Allen ? :-)

Well, there are some similarities, and yes, Woody Allen made some sci-fi in his early years. But that was just something interesting crossed my mind.

It started with bar scene, ended in same fashion. What was from sci-fi in this first episode of season 2 ? Basically nothing. Could say that 'pee' story was it, but that was rather bad humor by me. And weakest part of episode.

As I see, Set just growing up, and some real life situations are what he is interested for. And that's good for me. Even if some call this soap opera.

And there is cute new female character, which may have more screen time in next episodes ? Yes, all that may be seen as manipulation with audience. But that's what movies are.

I hope this will be at least on level of first season. Then you have my attention :-)

Filler episode. Not sci-fi.
MartyisGreat5 January 2019
Not a good start to the season, really felt like a filler episode better suited for mid-season. Reminded me of Star Trek: DS9 where the bartender is the focus of the episode. Not a bad thing, just wasn't expecting this for the first episode.

Yikes...Teenagers
garabedian1231 January 2019
This was a rocky start in my book. Unless you are a teen or a preteen you probably did not love this episode either. Is this the new target audience...teenagers? I hope not. You had the kids acting out and the adults acting like teenagers. I was kind hoping Isaac's "sarcastic" comment about there being a disease on board were actually true. That would have at least redeemed the episode as a space exploration themed show. But No. We had officers acting like they had never been on a date before and the captain acting like a heartbroken prom date. All so we could go watch an alien urinate. That is a rocky start in my book. Not to mention. Didn't they already kinda foreshadow Alara and the captain in the first season. So why are they going through this long thing setting this up this season?

A PISSER
douglasjordane29 October 2019
If you can wait for the punchline, it packs a poignant punch! I spit-laughed when the ending delivered a witty punchline.

The genius of MacFarlane is to draw you into the familiar in order to hit you with the _______ (what's the perfect word to inset here. Something is missing from this show. It's obvious this is supposed to be Star Trek.

Unfortunately, we have no ability to separate the past from the comedic genius of MacFarlane. We, instead, have to endure these episodes of poor parody stories with great punchlines.

👀🙄😅🤣🤣🤣

This is a good Voyager-style episode
marian_the_nightman31 December 2018
-I started to see the episode in a very tense atmosphere in my family, even if everybody is starting to party and suddenly i realised all the sci-fi shows from this part of the year , like Titans,Nightflyers and even Arrowverse were very dark,so this episode was a very good way to prepare myself for the end of the year atmosphere, and i highly recommend this episode to anybody, this series is so special to me ,because it is the only sci-fi comedy show from the last years and it is a good one.

mediocre start with some gynocetrisme
petersjoelen25 February 2019
It could be a better start but in general this first episode of the second season wa not bad but sadly it was not very good either . I like it how this episode tries to deepen the different characters a bit and and the general mood is not to serious . what i don't like is the general weak male characters , captain mercer and how he deals with kelly's rejection is childish and he acts strangely needy to her at times . When Kelly on the other hand acts childish in one scene it is a clear message we all need to adapt too female irrational behavior , why not confront her with this and demand that she needs to behave like an adult . In general i see a little bit of a trend in portraying the male characters as too needy , childish and sometimes dumb and i don't like it . I hope they do not go overboard with this and the general mood is still playfull i really do want to like this show , it has a graet star trek vibe but do not go overboard with this stuf because it is a real bummer .

Strong start for a second season!
jeff-cossey31 December 2018
This feels like a more seasoned show. The comedy and jokes seam less out of place. The captain seems to be more in command of his crew except for his teenage drive-by move..

Currently the only this is the only show on TV that feels like a Star Trek series.

I look forward to more episodes!

Make it shorter
rickay-1709212 January 2019
I was hoping after the middling first season, that the writers might really get their teeth into the second season. Instead we get this big fat dud! Every time a commercial break came I thought 'wait, nothing happened again.' Apart from the problem with tone, not knowing when to be serious, light hearted or edgy, I think the main problem is the show's too long, or rrather the ideas aren't good enough to sustain the run time. I may watch the next couple of eps but if there is no improvement I think I may have to start watching Star Trek Discovery and I don't wanna!

The Star Trek spirit lives on and is strong. This episode was more of a character development and less about action/scifi stuff we all love. I look forward to many more Orville.

Weakest start to a new season you could imagine
stuartjross2 January 2019
SO you've been on your season break, your fans are avidly awaiting new material and you've been hyping it for a while. So you come out with all guns blazing, give them a season opener to remember and bolster your ratings for the rest of the season. Don't you??

Not according to Seth McFarlane you dont. Prepare yourself for the ride of a lifetime as Hot Blonde First officer gets a boyfriend and they row. Hot Brunette security officer has love life troubles. Cute but clumsy ginger navigator has women problems. Doctor Hardnose has kiddie issues and Bortas needs a Pee.

Really??? What the roddenberry are they searching for here??? Utter rubbish. It can only get better from here.

Heard so many good things about this show in light of the Star Trek demise. This show would be great if I was still in high school. This was the first time I watched this show and probably the last. Okay, for the record I turned it off after 20 minutes.

Definitely a different start to season 2. I liked it...everyone else made it seem really terrible?? Now and then you need an episode that is a little mainstream to bring the series back!
