Meghan Trainor is now all about the laughs. The singer has sealed a major overall deal with NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Entertainment that includes a comedy series in development.
Trainor will star in and help develop the sitcom for NBC, but there is no concept or writers attached just yet. The comedy is the first project under the cross-platform deal, which is the first of its kind under the new NBCU Television and Streaming Entertainment structure under Susan Rovner.
The deal will also include other potential projects across scripted and unscripted content for NBCU’s various network, cable, streaming and syndication programming outlets, including Bravo, E!, Oxygen, Syfy, Universal Kids, USA and Peacock, in addition to NBC.
NBCU is set to announce the deal on Friday. “In addition to being a phenomenally talented performer, Meghan is a vibrant and hilarious ray of light who is the perfect fit for NBC’s brand,...

If you had that nagging feeling of familiarity watching Amanda Mena perform on Night 2 of ABC’s “American Idol” Season 19, you’re not alone.
This 18-year-old horse handler originally made a name for herself on NBC’s rival reality TV show “America’s Got Talent” where she received Mel B‘s Golden Buzzer. At that time she was only 15, but her “Natural Woman” audition blew the roof off the theater and earned her a coveted spot in the Season 13 live shows. Amanda made it all the way to the “AGT” semi-finals, being eliminated just prior to finale week. With three more years of experience under her belt, can this Boston resident go the end and win “American Idol”?
See ‘American Idol’ Winners List (Seasons 1 – 18)
For her “Idol” audition (watch above), Amanda took a big risk performing The Beatles‘ “Golden Slumbers” in front of judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

A TikToker with political connections, a speedo-clad model with a Zoolander complex and a reality competition veteran with a grudge against Meghan Trainor were among the standout auditions (for better or worse) as American Idol returned to ABC for its 19th season on Sunday.
Let’s get that first one out of the way: No conversation about the premiere’s most memorable moments would be complete without discussing Claudia Conway, the daughter of former Donald Trump senior advisor Kellyanne Conway. Joined for in-person support by her father (and virtually by her mother), the 16-year-old presented her best attempt at Rihanna...

“American Idol” returns on February 14 for its fourth season on ABC and 19th overall. As always, Ryan Seacrest is the host of this reality competition series. Returning to the judges table are country superstar Luke Bryan, pop princess Katy Perry and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie.
A huge part of the appeal of “American Idol” are the audition episodes. These make for must-see TV as much for the awful acts as the ones that sound and look like they could go all the way. Over the course of five episodes, we will see the three judges give upwards of 150 contestants that coveted ticket to Hollywood.
By the end of Hollywood Week the judges will have culled these would-be winners down to just 40. Those lucky few made it to the showcase round. Only half of them made the cut. The Top 20 then took turns performing on their own and with celebrity guests.

Take a look, if you will, at the brand new video Zayn and a female duet partner star in for the theme from “Five Hundred Fifty Shades Darker” … sorry, Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin.” The kind of woozy arrangement they’ve come up with for the classic “A Whole New World” sounds like it’d be at least as suitable for a blue movie as a romp about a blue guy. Which is maybe why the two stars aren’t allowed to get together on screen: Would it get too E. L. James-ian, if they did?
Zayn pairs up here with Zhavia Ward, because in securing talent for the tune, they started at the end of the alphabet and didn’t work frontward. Or maybe because someone realized that, as cute couples go, these two are destined to have the greatest monogrammed towels ever, if Zorro doesn’t make...

NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack, under fire for perceived inaction on certain NBC News activities, also protected a male employee who sexually harassed multiple women while he was in charge at Sony BMG Music Entertainment in 2004, according to a published report.
The Daily Beast today published a story largely quoting anonymous sources that made the allegations against Lack, who has been criticized for how incidents at NBC News have been handled, including the incidents that drove former Today show anchor Matt Lauer from the company and the stifling of Ronan Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein.
According to the Daily Beast story, Lack was chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment when executive Charlie Walk allegedly sent sexual messages to female employees using company email. The emails reportedly included graphic pornography, according to the sources cited.
Lack was told of the matter, but repeatedly declined to address Walk’s conduct.

Lamar Jackson’s debut as a member of the Baltimore Ravens flew high and not so high last night for the quarterback in the NFL Hall of Fame game’s unofficial start to a new season of football but ratings for the NBC broadcast match-up with the Chicago Bears definitely went down.
With a 4.7/9 in metered market results and a 1.8/7 in fast affiliates, the Ravens 17-16 win over the Chicago Bears in Canton, Ohio took a two-time double digit hit last night from last year. That’s a 13% decline in the early metrics and a harder 18% fall in the first round of 18-49 results from the August 3, 2017 gridiron battle between the always well watched Dallas Cowboys’ 20-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Which, even though the 6.50 million watched the Hall of Fame game and NBC won Thursday night, means the usually virtually meaningless first pre-season game now takes on hefty implications.

“Big Brother” led CBS to another Thursday victory and ABC settled for fifth place. Yes, that means the Disney broadcaster finished behind a Spanish-language network.
Fox was runner-up in the key demo last night; NBC ended up No. 2 among total viewers, boosted by primetime’s most-watched show, the “Little Big Shots” finale.
CBS was first in ratings with a 1.0 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 4.6 million, according to preliminary numbers. As the network’s only fresh program of the night, “Big Brother” at 9 p.m. scored a 1.5/7 and 5.1 million viewers.

After a 0-3 loss to Croatia yesterday, Lionel Messi and Argentina aren’t quite out of the 2018 World Cup but it’s not looking good even as Iceland got iced out today by Nigeria.
However, for Fox, Thursday’s 11 Am Pt match from Nizhny Novgorod Stadium was a delicious dish of the asado. The pitch battle between Croatia and the 1986 World Cup winner pulled in a strong 2.2/7 in metered market results.
While a dip of just over 9% from when 2014 runners-up Argentina drew with Iceland on June 16, yesterday’s match was the fifth highest rated game of the 2018 World Cup for Fox so far – and that’s with no USA team playing.
The highest rated match was Mexico’s stunning win over Germany on June 17, which snagged a 2.77 in the early metrics. Of course, we could see a new addition to the 2018 Top 5 once the results for Brazil’s 2-0 victory...

ABC’s debut of the second season of “The Gong Show” didn’t ring the Nielsen ratings bell as loudly as its primetime competition Thursday night, according to early data.

With nbc’s “The Voice” and ABC’s new incarnation of “American Idol” both doing well in the ratings, and the second season of Fox’s “The Four: Battle for Stardom” returning June 7, there’s clearly a demand for music competition shows.
“I hear so many reasons from people,” says “The Voice” exec producer/showrunner Audrey Morrissey. “It’s also because they’re singing songs we all know and love. It’s also escapism — people use these shows to shut out the world for a few hours every week. And people like a good underdog story.”
Adds David Eilenberg, exec producer of “The Four” and chief creative officer of ITV America: “Wish fulfillment is certainly part of it, but I also think there’s a universality to music that may not be true of other genres of unscripted TV. And it’s a collective experience on a very visceral,...

Every year, the Fox television network introduces new TV series, which are either cancelled or renewed by the season's end. Likewise, among existing shows which were initially renewed and returned for another installment, there are always some under-performers that wind up as the television vulture's TV dinner du jour. Although everyone understands the Nielsen ratings usually play a big role in TV cancellations and renewals, most fans do not get to participate in that system. Since so many viewers' opinions do not factor into the network's programming decisions, we are offering you the chance to submit your own Fox TV show ratings to us, instead. The fifth and final game of the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals led NBC to an easy win in the Thursday overnight ratings.
The game, which saw the Washington Capitals win their first Stanley Cup against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, is currently averaging a 1.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 6 million viewers, though due to the nature of live sports those numbers will be subject to adjustment later today. Even still, that is up in both measures compared to Game 5 last year, which ultimately drew a 1.5 and 4.4 million viewers.
The game also delivered a 5.0 rating in metered-market households, the highest overnight rating ever for a Stanley Cup Final Game 5. Games 1 through 4 of this year’s finals averaged a 3.8 household rating. In Las Vegas, the game drew a 27.6 rating, while in Washington D.C. it drew a 25.2.
The news was not as rosy for the Season 2 return of “The Four: Battle for Stardom” on Fox.

It may have felt a bit too close to call up until the final minutes, but, in the end, the Golden State Warriors continued with tradition last night and defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in Ohio to now lead the 2018 NBA Finals 3-0.
The continuation of course for the 110-102 primetime match-up comes from last year when LeBron James and crew were also denied a victory by Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and the rest of the Gsw in Game 3 of the 2017 NBA Finals after suffering two back-to-back losses. In what was then the two teams’ third consecutive NBA Finals, 2016 champs the Cavs went on to triumph in Game 4 of the 2017 series before being shut down in Game 5 in Oakland and the 2015 champs Gsw became the 2017 champions.
With a 12.7 in metered market results, last night’s exhilarating Game 3 of the 2018 NBA Finals dipped just 5% to be pretty steady from the comparable match-up of last year.

Built-in followings are hard to come by, so it’s no wonder Zhavia Ward, the standout finalist from Fox show “The Four: Battle for Stardom,” got herself a recording contract. What is surprising, however, is that it’s not with Republic Records.
The Universal Music Group label had first dibs on any singer who competed on the show, which aired in January, according to insiders. The season 1 winner, Evvie McKinney, received a record deal with Republic (home to The Weeknd and Ariana Grande) and a partnership with iHeartRadio, whose “On the Verge” program provides swift national exposure to millions of listeners.
But Ward, who went by simply Zhavia on the show, has signed to Records, a joint venture with Sony Music, through its Columbia label . Multiple sources tell Variety that Republic, which is run by founders Monte and Avery Lipman, passed on Ward, while Columbia Records chairman/CEO Ron Perry was waiting in the wings.

Roku continues to grow the catalog of its ad-supported Roku Channel: The company is adding full seasons of select shows from Showtime, Fox and Epix as well as other partners to the channel.
Some of the shows being added to the Roku Channel include the first seasons of Showtime’s “Billions,” “Ray Donovan” and “The Affair,” as well as Epix’ “Get Shorty.” Roku is also adding select episodes from Fox shows like “The Four: Battle for Stardom,” “Beat Shazam” and “Love Connection,” as well as nature and wildlife documentaries from Smithsonian Earth.
However, there’s a catch: These shows will only be available on the Roku Channel until May 20, which the company has been trying to coin “National Streaming Day” for the past couple of years. Fox said today that the original judges panel for The Four: Battle for Stardom — sans the fired Charlie Walk — will return for Season 2. Fergie also is back as host of the singing competition alongside judges Sean “Diddy” Combs, DJ Khaled and Meghan Trainor. The premiere is set for 8 Pm Thursday, June 7.
The show launched January 4 but made unwanted headlines later that month when judge and record exec Walk was axed from the series amid allegations of past sexual harassment.
Described by Fergie at TCA as “the Hunger Games of singing competition series,” the first season of The Four was Fox’s highest-rated new unscripted series in nearly four years in adults 18-49 and total viewers. Evvie McKinney of Memphis was crowned the champion and is in the studio recording her first single under the panel’s guidance.

The market for global TV formats, once dominated by the U.K., the U.S. and the Netherlands, is in a state of constant geographic flux.
Turkey and South Korea are now joining Israel and Japan on the list of major purveyors of TV series that can be easily adapted to local tastes.
The growth of global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon has also upped the demand for shows with sturdy formats that can play widely around the world.
In early March, Amazon Prime Video launched its first unscripted original, “The Remix,” an Indian live music reality show, across 200 countries. The format was acquired from Turkey’s Global Agency.
The show, in which 10 teams pairing a DJ and a singer remix existing songs into new cover versions in the hopes of winning a big-money prize and the chance to cut an album, was produced with “probably one of...

Fox’s singing competition “The Four” is in dire need of a shake-up following the ouster of judge Charlie Walk over allegations of inappropriate behavior. We’d love to see a female powerhouse take over for Walk, since his alleged mistreatment of women is what resulted in his ouster from “The Four: Battle for Stardom.” Artists like Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga would be perfect, not just because of their raw talent, but for the way they’d no...
