Comedian Jim Carrey is no stranger to method acting. But those around him noticed that the comedian tended to go too far when immersing himself in his roles. So much so that he was cautioned to give up his method acting or else real harm might come his way.

Carrey has dabbled in dramatic films before like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. but he wanted to truly inhabit his role as Andy Kaufman in the film Man on the Moon. The actor confided that he started becoming the character as soon as he was cast in the role.

The “Wham!” documentary on Netflix hit me like, well, you can guess.
Wham! was formed in 1982, the year after I was born; by the time I turned four, the pop duo was done. So you’ll forgive me if I lacked some context of the group’s real-time rise to stardom and ultimate split. Enter: Netflix, director Chris Smith (“Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond”), and Andrew Ridgeley’s mom.
When I streamed the self-titled Netflix doc, released on June 17, I didn’t expect much more than 92 minutes of schlock, a few catchy tunes, and maybe a good explanation for the “Choose Life” shirts from 1984’s very 1980s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” music video.
To my surprise, what we also didn’t get from “Wham!” was much George Michael drama. If that sounds like a major omission, given his various drug charges and one very famous 1998 arrest for...

Unabashed pop groups with fervid teenage followings tend to get trivialized, at least in the media. They’re dismissed as being slick and calculated and superficial. But there’s a story in “Wham!,” the new Netflix documentary about the quintessential pop duo of the 1980s, that testifies to what a chancy and audacious artist George Michael was even back in his teen-idol days.
The year is 1983. Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, coming off their first album, “Fantastic”, have established Wham! as an effective lightweight pop machine, with its two young stars prancing around the stage in sexy sportswear. The time has come to record “Careless Whisper,” a song they’ve had in their back pocket for several years (we hear the super-early demo version of it that they recorded in 1981 in Ridgeley’s living room on a Teac 4-track Portastudio). Michael has become enough of a powerhouse to hook up with Jerry Wexler,...

Surfer Garrett McNamara, star of the HBO documentary series 100 Foot Wave, is one of the few people on the planet who can truly describe what it’s like to be chased by a massive wall of water.
“It’s just so choppy and the wind is just going by your face and your whole body,” McNamara said during a panel discussion of 100 Foot Wave as part of Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “As you’re coming down [the wave], you’re looking to see if it’s going to keep you from behind or if there’s an exit, if you can make it or should you go deeper or run to the shoulder or try to pull into the barrel. From their HGTV parody show “The Curse” to a possible reunion with “Uncut Gems” star Adam Sandler, Josh and Benny Safdie are keeping busy. Next up, the filmmaking brothers are executive-producing a still-untitled Andy Kaufman documentary, now officially underway at Tremolo Productions. That’s the documentary outfit run by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville (“Twenty Feet from Stardom”). The documentary will also be executive-produced by famed record producer and former Columbia Records co-founder and filmmaker Rick Rubin, which means this project has some serious wattage behind it.
The documentary will be directed by Alex Braverman, Emmy-nominated director on “Gaycation” as well as the series “Waffles + Mochi,” and he worked as a producer at Vice.
Why anyone hasn’t made an Andy Kaufman documentary yet is anyone’s guess, though the comedian was explored in the 1999 Milos Forman film “Man on the Moon” starring Jim Carrey, whose experience playing the...

Two decades after his breakthrough as a documentary filmmaker, Chris Smith is on a tear in the non-fiction realm, having directed “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” “Fyre,” and “Operation Variety Blues: The College Admissions Scandal” in the past four years, while also serving as an executive producer of last year’s pandemic docuseries sensation “Tiger King.” His latest effort, HBO’s “100 Foot Wave,” follows surfing pioneer Garrett McNamara on his quest to conquer a mighty swell in Portugal; another project revolving around Robert Downey Jr. and his late father is in the works.
Last August, the younger Downey called Smith “arguably the greatest documentary (filmmaker) around right now” while speaking on the “Smartless” podcast, praise that especially resonated given his father’s work as documentary filmmaker.
Smith’s recent output reflects a renewed focus on documentary filmmaking after years of mostly concentrating on commercial directing to the point of burnout.

Hulu is fighting “Fyre” with Fyre. Hulu has one-upped Netflix, dropping their own competing documentary about the Fyre Festival just four days before Netflix had announced they would release their own.
Now available for streaming now on Hulu, “Fyre Fraud” contains an exclusive interview with the convicted creator of Fyre Fest, Billy McFarland. But streaming on Friday will be “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,” which comes from the director of “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” Chris Smith.
Both documentaries describe the failed 2017 music festival organized by McFarland and rapper Ja Rule that turned into an internet sensation and a subsequent criminal case. The festival on a remote, private island was hyped by social media influencers and celebrities as a lavish, exclusive event, but attendees who had spent thousands of dollars found themselves virtually stranded in woefully inadequate conditions.

Netflix today dropped a trailer for “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,” its documentary on the disastrous 2017 festival, which collapsed before it even started and landed its organizer, Billy McFarland, a six-year prison sentence. The doc will premiere on Jan. 18.
“Fyre” is directed by Chris Smith, who helmed last year’s documentary “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” and “gives a first-hand look into the disastrous crash of Fyre as told by the organizers themselves,” according to the announcement. Earlier this year Hulu announced a docusieres on the festival that does not yet have a release date, and last year Seth Rogen and the Lonely Island said they were planning a film that follows a storyline similar to that of the Fyre Festival.

Exclusive: Here’s an intriguing combination: Jim Carrey and Sonic The Hedgehog. Sources said Carrey is negotiating to star in the Paramount film in the role of Robotnik, a villain in the live action/CGI adaptation of the hit Sega video game. Sonic must stop Dr. Eggman from completing his plans for world domination is basically the gist of this one.
Sonic the Hedgehog has spanned several iterations from Sega consoles in the 1990s to mobile fan and absorption into the Nintendo Mario Brothers video game universe. Who is Jim Carrey, really? That's a question that Chris Smith's documentary Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond — Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton poses but doesn't quite answer. The Netflix doc special is a journey into the mind of the iconic actor, who, during the making of 1999's Man on the Moon, famously journeyed into the mind of comedian Andy Kaufman, who in turn occasionally dragged everyone around him into the mind of his insufferable alter ego Tony Clifton.

Jim Carrey’s a complicated guy. Between the Netflix documentary “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond” and his own candid remarks, the last year has revealed more and more about the actor’s inner world — which isn’t always funny. Carrey’s proclivity for art has also made headlines, and yesterday he tweeted his latest creation: an unflattering portrait of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, whom he describes as “monstrous.”
“This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!” he wrote alongside the painting, which almost makes Sanders look like a character from “Beavis & Butt-Head.” Sanders has a contentious relationship with the media and anyone else who questions the erratic actions, tweets, and attitude of her boss; the problem, it seems, is always the press and never the president.
Carrey’s Twitter feed is largely devoted to his art.
