Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). His remaining half dozen directing notices came for his work on “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “The Age of Innocence” (1994), “Casino” (1996), “The Aviator...

With more than 50 years of credits, two Tony Awards, a pair of Emmys, a Golden Globe and now his second Oscar nomination for best supporting actor in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans — more than 40 years since the last one, for 1980’s Ordinary People — Judd Hirsch is one of the most respected and hardest-working actors out there. But his reasoning for always working is pretty simple: “When I act, I’m alive — and when I’m not, I’m, uh, just me, who just hangs out.”
The length of Hirsch’s career is one thing, but he’s quick to remind that it took him a bit to find success. “I didn’t get on the boards until about 30,” he says of when he started getting roles on the stage, screen and TV. But his real breakout still took time. “I was 42 when I did Taxi,” he says of his time as Alex Reiger,...

(Welcome to 21st Century Spielberg, an ongoing column and podcast that examines the challenging, sometimes misunderstood 21st-century filmography of one of our greatest living filmmakers, Steven Spielberg. In this edition: "The Fabelmans.")
In Susan Lacy's 2017 documentary "Spielberg," Steven Spielberg states: "I've avoided therapy because movies are my therapy." The legendary filmmaker is laughing as he says this, but the comment is telling. In fact, it can pretty much sum up Spielberg's entire career — and personal life.
It can certainly sum up "The Fabelmans," Spielberg's most personal film; the autobiographical story of his childhood that he's been talking about making for years now. Here, Spielberg isn't giving himself a pat on the back and singing his own artistic talents. Instead, he's confronting his own mythology head-on. He's turning the pages of the book backward and investigating what he finds.

Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are the most famous working directors of the last several decades, but that doesn't mean that they're in competition. In fact, the two filmmakers are fans of each other's work. Spielberg is particularly fond of Scorsese's 1990 mob movie, the widely acclaimed modern classic, "Goodfellas." And who can blame him? What's not to like? But "Goodfellas" is more than just a good movie to Spielberg — it's a master class in directing.
"Henry Hill, Jimmy the Gent, Tommy DeVito, Paulie, Karen, Billy Batts, the Lufthansa heist ... all someone has to do is mention some of these names and I get the sudden and irresistible urge to watch Martin Scorsese's 'Goodfellas' again," the director reminisced in an interview with Variety. A hot trend in publishing these days is to write an entire book about the making of one seminal movie. In the last few years there have been books about West Side Story (the 1961 Oscar winner, not the Spielberg remake), The Wild Bunch, Chinatown and The Godfather, to name a few. Glenn Frankel, who wrote earlier books about the making of High Noon and The Searchers, followed up last year with Shooting Midnight Cowboy: Art, Sex, Loneliness, Liberation, and the Making of a Dark Classic. Now that book has in turn inspired a new documentary by Nancy Buirski, which is playing in both Venice and Tellurida.
Although a 101-minute movie will never have the breadth or depth of a 340-page book, Buirski’s film does have the advantage of providing revealing on-camera interviews with several of the movie’s principals, including actors Jon Voight,...

Here in the middle of July, one has the sense that the Oscars are a lifetime away. Ralph Lauren, the fashion designer synonymous with American sportswear, will be profiled in an upcoming HBO documentary titled “Very Ralph.” The feature-length doc — airing November 12 — is being touted as the first documentary portrait of the 79-year-old Lauren, who founded his eponymous fashion brand in 1967.
A synopsis for the documentary reads:
“With an uncanny ability to turn his dreams into reality, Ralph Lauren has built a multi-billion-dollar, global powerhouse out of his aspirations, becoming a living embodiment of American optimism and the American Dream. Susan Lacy felt it was “logical” to divide her Jane Fonda documentary into the titular five acts. Reading the Oscar-winning actress’s autobiography “My Life So Far,” Lacy zeroed in on a line she wrote about how “she wanted to understand her first two acts … in order to understand how to live her third.” Yet the documentarian knew that three acts weren’t enough. “She was dividing her life into thirds,” Lacy explains, “and it was very obvious from her book that the four men in her life … had influenced who she was.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lacy above.

‘The Post’: Director Steven Spielberg Turned His Journalism Thriller into a Film Production Metaphor
The convergence of the micro and macro worlds of politics and journalism in “The Post” most appealed to two-time Oscar-winning production designer Carter (“Lincoln,” “Avatar”). The entry point of Liz Hannah’s script was Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) finding her voice at 54 as the new publisher of The Washington Post with the landmark publication of “The Pentagon Papers” in 1971. Director Steven Spielberg added the social context of journalists having a vital voice in search of the truth with the help of Hannah and scribe Josh Singer (“Spotlight”).
“I think that when Liz grasped the idea of Kay’s rite of passage as a road map for the rest of her life beyond raising children that she was onto something that certainly was significant,” said Carter. “So then, for me, there’s the intimate side of Juliet and Romeo being the Kay Graham and Ben Bradlee [Tom Hanks] platonic love story, where their...

The Post, Steven Spielberg’s thriller about The Washington Post’s attempts to publish the Pentagon Papers, which exposed government deception during the Vietnam War, premiered Thursday in a similarly scandalized Washington, about a mile from the newspaper’s former headquarters, where much of the action is set.

As is annual tradition, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden has announced this year’s 25 film set to join the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Selected for their “cultural, historic and/or aesthetic importance,” the films picked range from such beloved actioners as “Die Hard,” childhood classic “The Goonies,” the seminal “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and the mind-bending “Memento,” with plenty of other genres and styles represented among the list.
The additions span 1905 to 2000, and includes Hollywood blockbusters, documentaries, silent movies, animation, shorts, independent, and even home movies. The 2017 selections bring the number of films in the registry to 725.

Even when Tom Hanks tries to throw a few jabs at Meryl Streep, he can’t keep up the charade for long.

Wanting more, Colbert asked, “Oh really? Diva?”
“Look, the shoes alone, man,” Hanks joked, quickly adding, “No, I am so joking.”

When the host brought up Streep, the veteran actor rolled his eyes and said, “You mean, can I just say, ‘high maintenance Meryl Streep?’ ” Hanks replied.
Wanting more, Colbert asked, “Oh really? Diva?”
“Look, the shoes alone, man,” Hanks joked, quickly adding, “No, I am so joking.”

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 725 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2017 list, which includes such Hollywood classics as Die Hard, Titanic, and Superman along with groundbreaking independent features like Yvonne Rainer’s Lives of Performers, Charles Burnett’s To Sleep with Anger, and Barbara Loden’s Wanda. Steven Spielberg shows no signs of slowing down. The 70-year-old filmmaker will be delivering the excellent The Post to theaters this month and releasing his pop culture extravaganza Ready Player One in 2018. But just because Spielberg seems to be constantly plowing ahead into the future, that doesn’t mean we can’t stop and reflect on his past. […]

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of “The Post,” which is set to hit theaters on December 20th, what is Steven Spielberg’s best film?
Candice Frederick (@ReelTalker), Freelance for Harper’s Bazaar, /Film, The Undefeated, Birth.Movies.Death
“E.T.” There is really no other filmmaker who portrays wonder and innocence quite like Spielberg. While he’s done many great movies, “E.T.” not only captures the purity and curiosity of youth, but its beautiful effects and simple observations implore all of us to stop and take notice of the world around us and humanity itself.

We recently were treated to a new trailer for Steven Spielberg's feature film adaptation of Ernest Cline's geek culture novel Ready Player One. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now! I've been watching that damn thing over and over again and I've been enjoying the hell out of it!
If you watched the trailer, then you know that it's packed full of all kinds of surprises and Easter eggs. I eventually ended up going through it frame by frame to try and see what I could find. So, here are a bunch of screenshots from the trailer for you to go through, along with a breakdown of where I point out a few of the cool things that you might have missed. When talking about the story, Cline said:

Among the many surprises in the Golden Globes movie nominations, announced Monday, were bids for a movie best known for no longer starring Kevin Spacey and the lack of love shown to Wonder Woman.
All the Money in the World, the Ridley Scott-directed film about the John Paul Getty III kidnapping, received a nod for best supporting actor Christopher Plummer, whose performance as rich old J. Paul Getty was shot and edited into the movie in only the past month — seemingly the blink of an eye — after Spacey, amid escalating allegations about inappropriate sexual behavior, was completely edited out.

The Golden Globe nominations are as Golden Globe-y as ever. It is largely impossible to predict who the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will deem worthy of being invited to their annual shindig, and this year proved no exception. While there were enough sure things in the mix (the HFPA loves Meryl Streep) and some omissions we knew were longshots all along (sorry, Wonder Woman), there are a number of surprises and snubs worth discussing.
Surprises
Christopher Plummer for All the Money in the World. And here we said it as a joke. We didn't know anyone had even seen All the Money in the World yet -- since Plummer filmed his parts last month -- but he somehow managed a nomination. (Which means Michael Stuhlbarg was snubbed for Call Me By Your Name.) Really, all the love for All the Money in the World, which also included nominations for Best Actress for Michelle Williams and Best Director...

From filmmaker Steven Spielberg comes the science fiction action adventure Ready Player One, based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name, which has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the Oasis, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the Oasis, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
As you watch the first trailer, be on the listen for a Back To The Future flourish.

Virtual reality isn't just an escape f0r Wade Watts, it's a chance for a better real life. Following its infectiously fun trailer debut at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, the official trailer for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One (based on the book of the same name by Ernest Cline) has been released by Warner Bros., giving viewers the chance to rock out to Van Halen's "Jump."

Unlike some filmmakers, the good news if you aren’t a fan of Steven Spielberg’s latest film, another one is right around the corner. After feeling lukewarm on The Post, it’s just a few months until his epic-scale sci-fi feature Ready Player One lands. Based on Ernest Cline’s bestseller, the 2045-set adventure follows a kid named Wade Watts who enters a competition in a pop culture-filled virtual world.

"It's the only place that feels like I mean anything." Warner Bros has launched the new full theatrical trailer for Steven Spielberg's grand adaptation of Ready Player One, the geeky novel about a kid in the future who logs into a virtual reality world and plays games to win the ultimate prize. The first teaser trailer had a few small glimpses, but this just looks wow - totally jaw-dropping stunning. My goodness. Young actor Tye Sheridan stars as Wade Watts, known in the Oasis gaming world as "Parzival". The full cast includes Mark Rylance as the game's creator, James Halliday, as well as T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Letitia Wright, and Kae Alexander. This trailer actually makes me feel like Spielberg might've pulled this off, and I am excited to see it and experience the entire thing. I really love the footage they're showing in this,...

Steven Spielberg explores a dystopian 2045 and a pop culture-laced virtual reality world called the Oasis in the first full trailer for Ready Player One, the director's big-screen adaptation of Ernest Cline's cult novel.
Following the sneak peek from Comic Con, the new trailer focuses on the contrast between overpopulated Columbus, Ohio in 2045 – where Ty Sheridan's protagonist lives in "the Stacks," a towering city of mobile homes – and "the Oasis," a paradise of endless possibilities where society goes to escape.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix isn’t the only 2018 release to feature Tye Sheridan’s name on the masthead – Ready Player One, the long-in-development adaptation from Steven Spielberg, places Sheridan in the grubby shoes of Wade Watts, Aka Parzival, who journeys into a digital Oasis in order to make life in 2045 that little bit more bearable.
Lifted from the pages of Ernest Cline’s modern classic, Ready Player One takes place in a world crippled by social disparity. Whereas the one percent of the one percent live comfortably, the rest of humanity is left to wallow on the brink of poverty.
In order to escape from this miserable existence, the likes of Wade and his online friends indulge in a virtual reality simulation created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who has “recently shuffled off this mortal coil – but left behind a final game for his millions of users: Whoever solves his series...

It’s not easy to parse the idiosyncratic minds of the Hollywood Foreign Press, a motley crew of 90 veteran entertainment media who chum up with publicists and junketing stars throughout the year as they report on movies and TV for their outlets in 55 countries. Many of these folks have been covering the usual suspects for so long, they feel like friends.
And that’s one reason why they make such different choices from other critics’ groups. The relatively senior HFPA’s taste runs the gamut from sophisticated (“Moonlight”) to mainstream (“The Martian”). They do like celebrities to come to the glitzy Golden Globes Awards show on January 7 (Daniel Day-Lewis, Margot Robbie, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Jennifer Lawrence come to mind), which is by far the most fun party night of the year in Hollywood. So that’s another factor.

Let’s just cut right to the chase: Steven Spielberg has crafted yet another masterpiece with The Post, and it fits right in line as the third part of what I will label a trilogy of his recent films about the right people coming along at just the right time to do the right thing. Once again, Spielberg has delivered the goods. No one in the industry makes it look as easy as he does. He truly is a master at work.
