Some interesting changes, but ultimately not a good awards ceremony

If you read the title "2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards", you will immediately recognize that this is no longer the MTV Movie Awards as they give out a handful awards for small-screen productions as well. Nice change I would say. Another interesting change is the one about males and female in the same category, for example the one Emma Watson was awarded in really early in the show. But these two are some of not too many positive aspects here. Another one would be that honestly after seeing older MTV Movie Awards shows, it must be noted that the taste is better. There are less garbage productions honored/nominated in here for sure. "Logan" and "Get Out" are among the very best the year has to offer in my opinion. "Beauty and the Beast" I have not seen yet, but I'm positive I will like it too. Same for "The Edge of Seventeen". Hell they even awarded "Moonlight", even if I could not imagine in a million years how these guys won over the likes of Gosling, Stone, Kendrick, Watson and Efron. Television-wise things aren't looking much worse. There's some quality stuff in here. Lets just ignore that they nominated "Sh!tty Little Liars" as every year. "Atlanta", "Game of Thrones" (even if I am not a fan), "This is Us" (shame Mandy Moore didn't win anything and wasn't there), "Stranger Things... are all well-received small screen productions. Another positive aspect: In previous editions of this show I had the feeling that the winners knew before that they would win. This wasn't the case this year. Oh yeah and Hailee Steinfeld is an amazing Belle and really would have worked the part too. Not that Emma did a bad job or anything. Both would have been great.

Now the bad: Noah Cyrus is not Miley Cyrus and does not have one percent of her sisters star appeal. She may be a likable girl, but to become a star she has a long long way to go. Goldie Hawn is certainly not doing herself any favors with the way (and the movie) that got her out of retirement. Not in this show either. Not next to Amy Schumer either. The host Adam Devine I have no idea who he was to be honest. Outside America, he is completely unknown. His constant making fun of himself (the family, the lost nomination, the urinating etc.) got cringeworthy to say the least. His material wasn't bad at times, the delivery was most of the time with one or two exceptions when he was decent. Nothing more. And on a totally subjective note, I found it kinda painful to listen to his voice. The ways in which this show was abused for commercial reasons for promoting "It" and the new Spider Man film were embarrassing, almost as embarrassing as Tom Holland's on-stage acrobatics that had nothing to do with anything. Fast & Furious receiving a generation award. This is one of the example where they still prove that their taste is far from excellent. The absence of some categories is also always a low point in my opinion. One would be JDM winning Best Villain for Walking Dead. But the absolutely lowest moment of the night came from Trevor Noah, who tried to turn a kids awards event into politics not on one, but on two occasions with his mostly generic comments about Donald Trump and the French Presidential election. He should be ashamed and the fact that I know he is not is one major reason why we really need to be worried about the next generation of evening show hosts. They are miles away from filling the footsteps of the likes of Letterman, Leno, Carson...

All in all, despite the next generation somewhat proving they have decent taste, these 80 minutes included more negative than positive. A bit of a shame as the moments about awards were mostly good. Still taking the show elements into account, this was not a success. Watch something else instead.
