Robert Rodriguez isn’t against bringing original Spy Kids stars Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara back for another film. But the director says the time between the latest installment, Armageddon, and 2011’s Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, meant that it was “important to just start the franchise fresh.”
The filmmaker spoke about his decision to launch the latest Spy Kids chapter with a completely new family — and new set of leading child stars — in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I wanted to re-establish a new family,” he said of the choice to cast Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla in the new Netflix film, out Friday. “Because it’d been so long [since 2011’s All the Time in the World], it was important to just start the franchise fresh and then go from there.”

WarnerMedia has acquired the rights to new animated show “Master Moley,” starring Warwick Davis and Gemma Arterton, for its children’s platform Boomerang in more than 100 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Master Moley” is based on original stories written by British entrepreneur James Reatchlous, who spoke to Variety about how it came to life.
The deal, struck by Jetpack Distribution, will see the animation’s 30-minute special, “Master Moley By Royal Invitation,” head to the channel in November. The acquisition of the new 52-part series, comprising 11-minute episodes, “The Misadventures of Master Moley,” will continue the adventures of Master Moley and friends on Boomerang next year.
The animation follows adventurous mole Master Moley, who lives deep in a burrow under Queen Elizabeth II’s Windsor Castle in the bustling city of MoleTown, where he is the keeper of a magical book, which has the power to bring peace between humans and moles.

The Spy Kids are all grown up!
Nearly 20 years after starring in the 2001 Robert Rodriguez film, Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega came together on Monday for a special remote reunion thanks to Sabara’s wife, Meghan Trainor!
Trainor, 26, staged the virtual get-together during an Instagram Live on her account. She and her husband had just rewatched the original movie — one of four Spy Kids films Sabara and PenaVega starred in together — and were answering questions for about 40 minutes before PenaVega appeared as a surprise special guest.

NBC has given a script commitment to a prospective series inspired by the 2001 Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack movie “Serendipity.”
The project hails from Miramax Television, whose film division produced the original film, and writer Jonny Umansky. The idea for the show seems like a romantic one, here’s the logline: Harry and Claire fall in love one fateful night, are separated by circumstance and then spend years trying to find one another again…with a little help from the universe.
“I’ve been madly in love with this movie for more than half my life,” said Umansky. “Never has the world needed a show like ‘Serendipity’ more, and the love stories we have in store are big, bold and filled to the brim with whimsy and wonder.”
Umansky, who wrote the 2016 “Legends of the Hidden Temple” TV movie based on the video game for Nickelodeon, is also in place as an executive producer.

Exclusive: Priyanka Chopra Jonas will star in Netflix kid superhero feature We Can Be Heroes, a new IP which is being written, directed and produced by Alita: Battle Angel and Spy Kids director Robert Rodriguez.
The under-the-radar project will see alien invaders kidnap Earth’s superheroes, meaning a group of children have to team up to save their parents and the world.
Little else is being revealed about the project at this stage but it’s fair to say it’s skewing more towards Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel and the lucrative Spy Kids franchise rather than his darker Sin City. It is currently in production.
Quantico actress Chopra Jonas will next star in and co-produce The Sky Is Pink, based on the motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary, which will premiere at Toronto next month. She will also produce and star in an untitled wedding comedy set in India, co-produced by...

“A Quiet Place,” “Roma,” “First Man” and “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” led all films with three nominations each for the 66th Annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which were announced on Friday. The awards are handed out by the Motion Picture Sound Editors, a nonprofit organization of professional sound and music editors.
In the category of Feature Film – Effects/Foley, the Golden Reel category that most closely corresponds to the Oscars’ Best Sound Editing category, the nominees were “A Quiet Place,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Black Panther,” “Deadpool 2,” “First Man,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” “Ready Player One,” “Roma” and “The Favourite.” But because the Mpse has so many different sound-editing categories, and because those categories often contain eight or nine nominees, the Golden Reel Awards tend not to be helpful in forecasting Oscar nominees.
In the television categories, the shows that received multiple nominations include “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Vikings,” “Westworld” and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

In a typical post-awards show scene, two music professionals start a friendly conversation at a bar. “I start telling him, ‘I’m the king of all jingles,’” says Jared Gutstadt, co-founder of Jingle Punks, the venerable production music house that he launched 10 years ago.“I thought I was talking to a complete stranger.” Turns out he was chatting up Justin Bieber, who was himself interested in the jingle game. As Gutstadt recalls, the pop star “was riffing on, like, a Wrigley’s commercial, going, ‘What if I did a pitch and nobody knew my voice was on it?’”
Waving over a couple of friends, the Biebs proceeded to change Gutstadt’s life.“In that brief interaction I met Poo Bear and Maejor, who I’ve worked with more in the last three or four years than anyone outside the company,” Gutstadt says.
