Sandra Hüller is having a great award season this year with two of her films receiving a total of ten nominations, including a Best Actress nomination for her. While Hüller earned her nomination for Anatomy of a Fall, she also played the lead in the historical drama, The Zone of Interest, which is also up for nominations. She revealed that she almost missed the news of her nomination due to a situation with the garbage disposal at her home.
Sandra Hüller in Anatomy of a Fall
Hüller played a writer, Sandra Voyter, trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death in Justine Triet’s French legal drama, Anatomy of a Fall. She played Hedwig Höss, wife of the German Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss, in Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama, The Zone of Interest.

Actor Marlon Wayans is known for his stand-up comedy and comedic roles in films such as White Chicks and the Scary Movie franchise. Though the actor has ventured into dramatic territory with films such as Requiem For A Dream he was mostly known for his comedic endeavors as he gained fame with his sitcom with brother Shawn Wayans, The Wayans Bros.
Wayans also starred in the 2009 action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The Stephen Sommers directorial was an adaptation of the popular comics of the same name and starred Channing Tatum and Wayans in lead roles. Due to Wayans’ reputation as a comic actor, fans were reportedly concerned that the film would not be a serious adaptation of the action comics.

Fasten your seat belts and put your flashiest sunglasses on before boarding on Uri Marantz' train to the glitzy world of drug-fuelled funfair based on a true story about a man who got away with it all. Before you get tempted to draw any parallels to Walter White, a loveable but fictive character created for the popular TV series “Breaking Bad” starring the one and only Brian Cranston, hold your horses: the man whose name was changed to Gabi (Oshri Cohen) to protect his identity, is really like you and me. Furthermore, unlike Walter, he didn't find a way and means to produce a known drug to earn a significant amount of cash, instead he invented a legal psychoactive drug from Cathinonec, a completely new substance, through his knowledge of chemistry and the need to feed his own personal beast.

Killing Joke guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker’s influence is vast: Metallica attempted to emulate his guitar snarl on their cover of “The Wait”; Kurt Cobain admittedly ripped off his riff to “Eighties” for “Come As You Are”; LCD Soundsystem synthesized his riff on “Change” and turned it into “Losing My Edge.” Other artists who praised Walker’s playing and Killing Joke include Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, and all of Faith No More. Yet Walker himself never became a household name before his death on...

It begins as a spatter of heavy rainfall — nothing out of the ordinary for acclimatized Brits, for whom an actual storm can even be cozily welcome after days of noncommittal drear and drizzle. But then it doesn’t stop, deep-set wet turns to invasive flooding, and what seemed a mere bout of inclement weather has swept you — and countless others like you — out of house and home. Megan Hunter’s speculative novel “The End We Start From” was a neat metaphor for the larger threat in seemingly minor signifiers of climate crisis; briskly adapted by screenwriter Alice Birch, Mahalia Belo’s fine film version matches its pragmatic, coolly urgent vision of a world coming apart slowly, gradually, and then all at once.
Tight in budget and focus, this isn’t disaster cinema of the lurid Hollywood school, revelling in the grand spectacle of destruction. For much of the film’s running time,...

Signature Entertainment is dipping its toe into the apocalypse with today’s The End We Start From teaser trailer, featuring Jodie Comer engaged in a battle to survive a world overrun by rushing water and the erosion of humanity. Sandra Hüller doesn’t stand on protocol.
“Oh, it’s you,” she says, slipping quickly into the informal German “Du” when she recognizes me. “Can you give me five minutes? I just have to dump my shopping and make sure the dog’s Ok.”
We’re meeting early at a designer hotel in Cologne, Germany, a spot favored by visiting film crews for its proximity to the train station — just across the street — and its relative anonymity. Hüller, dressed in bell-bottoms and sneakers, a jean jacket thrown over a plain white T-shirt and with no makeup, has the morning off after an outdoor shoot for her next film was canceled due to a thunderstorm. She gets her dog sorted with a walker — more on the dog later — and sits down to talk.

Beginning an X-Men movie by quoting Abraham Lincoln can sound like a loaded choice. It can also be sublime, as was the case in X2, which 20 years ago opened on a solemn recitation of Lincoln’s closing remarks during his first inaugural address in 1861: “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection.”
So starts one of the best sequences in any superhero movie: Nightcrawler’s less-than-sanguine visit to what is almost assuredly the George W. Bush White House.
X2 landed like a thunderbolt after the first X-Men of 2000 was praised for many things by fans, but not its action sequences. Hampered by a sparse budget of $75 million and a timetable that was cut six months short by studio 20th Century Fox, X-Men relied on the strength of its casting—particularly Hugh Jackman as Wolverine,...

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.
In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.
Here are the actors making up the cast behind Steeltown Murders‘ dramatisation of real-life figures and events.

Never mind the Blues-, here are the Techno Brothers, and they are ready to conquer Japan. The music band in the film pronounced as a trio of geniuses on a par with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, The Beatles, Miles Davis and Bob Dylan by their agent Himuro (Asuna Yanagi), consists of real life Watanabe brothers (Hirobumi and Yuji) and Kurosaki Takanori, dressed up as if they came out of the Kraftwerk impersonators' competition. In case anyone wonders, yes – they are dressed in the signature red shirts and black ties, and they perform long electronic numbers in the most unlikely of places such as a recreation park and a green house to a very small, mostly unwilling audience.

Upon completing duties as a debut screenwriter, Friedrich Dürrenmatt celebrated a job well done by promptly rewriting the whole thing. The Swiss playwright and novelist had bent to studio demands and relinquished control of his script, It Happened in Broad Daylight, to Hans Jacoby, a veteran Hollywood writer who knew what studios wanted and gave it to them. Dürrenmatt collaborated with Jacoby and turned in a by-the-numbers detective story where clues lead to the perp and justice was served. But he didn’t believe in it. He had come from the traditions of Brecht’s epic theater and German philosophy, neither of which promise happy endings. So he rewrote his screenplay into a short novel, The Pledge, the new opening of which introduces a crime writer who’s instantly berated for his predictable, unrealistic garbage. Now the characters reenact It Happened in Broad Daylight‘s story only to discover even...

Few filmmakers have blended art, religion, and science to a greater extent than Darren Aronofsky has. In the 25 years since his first film, “Pi,” was released, the director has carved out a niche for himself, telling stories about people obsessed with finding order in a chaotic universe. Sometimes those people are mathematicians, other times they’re saints, but they’re all chasing forbidden knowledge hidden in the universe.
With those themes in mind, Aronofsky recently sat down with Pioneer Works director of sciences Janna Levin for a conversation about the scientific influences on his work. The panel, which was part of the museum’s Science vs. Fiction series, touched on all eight of Aronofsky’s feature films.
The conversation began with a discussion about “Pi.” While the 1998 film — which is getting an IMAX re-release next month — is a considerably smaller affair than most of Aronofsky’s other films, it remains...

Darren Aronofsky has made 16mm thrillers, big-budget biblical epics, sports dramas, and psychological horrors. But there’s one genre he’s hoping to tackle soon, and it’s an unexpected one: the musical.
Darren Aronofsky recently sat down with The A.V. Club to promote his latest film, The Whale. On the topic of the director potentially helming his first musical, he said, “I would love to and I’ve talked to many people about it. And I’ve come close to a few ideas. It’s a very tricky thing because music from musicals is not popular music anymore. So what do you do? I think Hamilton was brilliant because Lin-Manuel Miranda fused hip-hop with musical music. Not only was the long-rumored remake of the beloved Silent Hill 2 finally confirmed, but Konami laid out a loose roadmap for the future of the Silent Hill brand. Not one, not two, but Three spin-off games were announced: Silent Hill: Townfall, Silent Hill f, and Ascension.
Little is known about what these games will entail, but seeing the brand being applied to non-traditional S.H. experiences is exactly the mold-breaking move someone like myself clamors for. And at the very least,...

Back in 2019, Focus Interactive put out A Plague Tale: Innocence. The lesser known game told the story of Amicia De Rune and her little brother Hugo traveling through a plague-ridden France after their parents are killed by a ruthless inquisition. To say I was captivated with that first game is an understatement as I found their story to reach the emotional highs of a game like The Last of Us despite the final product not featuring enough gameplay in certain areas. A lot of A Plague Tale: Innocence at times feels like an interactive movie that’s compelled to tell a heart-wrenching story rather than be a fun game to play. In many ways, A Plague Tale: Requiem feels like the game a story like this deserves.
Picking up six months after the events of the first game, Requiem follows Amicia, Hugo, and a few other characters that I won...

Director Darren Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream" is one of the most stunning and heartbreaking films to ever depict the loneliness and depravity associated with addiction. Adapted from Hubert Selby Jr.'s 1978 novel, Aronofsky's sophomore feature film cemented the filmmaker's unique style, combining gorgeous cinematography, close-up shots, and a harrowing score that perfectly enhances the disturbing fate of its characters. And years later, that score still haunts us.
A frequent collaborator with Aronofsky, composer Clint Mansell was able to apply his own menacing and melodic motifs that launched a career full of equally haunting scores. And some of the sounds featured in the score are, well ... unlikely.
Hope Overture
Before launching his career as a Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated film composer, Clint Mansell was the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist of the English alt-rock band Pop Will Eat Itself, a group he formed when he was only 19. He sang vocals and supplied bass,...

Anything can be an addiction. People sometimes casually throw around the word "addicted" when talking about shows they're hooked on and other likes and loves, but in "Requiem for a Dream," television is but one of many things that can be habit-forming for humans in all the wrong ways. Darren Aronofsky's 2000 film descends into a cacophony of cross-cutting and nightmarish images as its four central characters plunge deeper into addiction and self-destruction. The ending is an assault on the senses that leaves the viewer reeling, and 20-plus years have not diluted its power.
In the Catholic Church, a requiem is a Mass for the dead, with Mozart's "Requiem," as seen in "Amadeus," for instance, being the music that would accompany such a Mass. This frames the title of "Requiem for a Dream" as a more elegant spin on "Death of a Dream." Co-written by Aronofsky and Hubert Selby, Jr. and based on Selby's novel,...

Darren Aronofsky's 2000 addiction drama "Requiem for a Dream" is an aggressively devastating, forthrightly tragic scare film that long lingers in the consciousness. Based on the 1978 novel by Hubert Selby, Jr., "Requiem" bears all the emotional beats of ignorant "druggie" films of the 1930s ("Reefer Madness" and the like) with the added benefit of hypnotic, brilliant, cinematic style. As each of the characters descends deeper and deeper into self ruin at the hands of their drug thirst, we share their pain, feel their desperation, understand their loss. The world is only briefly bright at the times when the drugs are freshly consumed. All other times are devoted to seeking the high again once it wears off. As William S. Burroughs once said: "A junky runs on junk time. When his junk is cut off, the clock runs down and stops. All he can do is hang on and wait for non-junk time to start.

On paper, "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" sounds like a fun, interesting movie. Two giants of the sci-fi horror world coming together to fight in a small suburban town full of victims? Sounds sick. Unfortunately, the 2007 movie wasn't exactly what many fans and critics were expecting from a concept like that, resulting in a critical and commercial flop that still has a 12 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
There's a good reason why people didn't like what they got after being promised a suburban alien clash: A lot of those clashes couldn't actually be seen very easily. "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" is a movie that has been lambasted for how poorly lit it is, with many critical scenes and fights playing out in near-total darkness. Seriously: If you're wanting to watch the movie, you better expect to turn up your television's settings beforehand.

“Killing Eve” and “The Last Duel” star Jodie Comer will star in an apocalyptic thriller called “The End We Start From” from director Mahalia Belo and executive producer Benedict Cumberbatch.
Belo’s (British series “Requiem” and “Ellen”) film is based on a novel by Megan Hunter of the same name about an environmental crisis that submerges London in flood waters and sees a young family torn apart in the chaos. Comer will play a woman who along with her newborn try to find their way home.
Hunter’s novel “The End We Start From” came out in 2017 and was her debut novel, and it drew comparisons to Cormac McCarthy’s seminal book “The Road.” Alice Birch, a writer on “Normal People,” “Succession” and “Lady Macbeth,” wrote the screenplay for the film. Hunter is also the author of 2020’s “The Harpy.”

Babi Yar. Context The most harrowing detail in Sergei Loznitsa’s Babi Yar. Context is not an image but a sound. Culled entirely from archive footage shot by Nazi and Soviet filmmakers, the film chronicles of one of the darkest chapters in World War II and Jewish history, the massacre of nearly 34,000 Jews in German-occupied Kiev in September 1941. But it opens with a tragedy from three months before, the pogrom that decimated the Jewish community in Lvov—now Lviv—a city in western Ukraine. It’s June 30, 1941; no sooner have the Nazis arrived in town than the local Jews are accused of working for Stalin’s secret police, and forced to exhume the bodies of fellow Ukrainians whom Soviet forces murdered and buried in the city’s prison. The corpses, mostly males, are brought out in the courtyard, and a small army of women (their mothers? Wives? Sisters?) rushes to identify their loved ones.

If there happened to be a general consensus regarding who holds the title of "most annoying living method actor," chances are Jared Leto would be unanimously voted as victor. The actor became particularly well-known for his ultra-immersive antics while filming 2016's "Suicide Squad," which included gifting co-star Margot Robbie a live rat and doling out used condoms as a cast-wide wrap present. According to Leto, these gestures were merely a symbol of how deeply committed he was to portraying the sick, twisted persona of the Joker — a practice that proved unnecessarily grandiose considering how limited the villain's role ultimately ended up being...

The new film by the German director will star actors Justus von Dohnányi and Hans Löw alongside newcomer Claude Heinrich as the main protagonist. The shoot for the adaptation of the novel Wir sind dann wohl die Angehörigen (lit. “We Are the Relatives”), written in 2018 by young German musician and first-time author Johann Scheerer, has started, helmed by director Hans-Christian Schmid, who wrote the script for this family drama together with Michael Gutmann. Schmid, best known for films such as Crazy (starring Robert Stadlober and Tom Schilling) and Requiem (starring Sandra Hüller), is producing the film together with Britta Knöller and their production company, 23/5 Filmproduktion. Through the unusual and enthralling perspective of a 13-year-old, the film tells the story of the abduction of Jan Philipp Reemtsma, which actually took place in 1996. Johann Scheerer, Reemtsma's son, converted his experience into a novel. He paints the portrait of a...

Some stories you might have heard about Oscar winner Jared Leto and his methodology for preparing for a role and staying in character: he gained so much weight to play John Lennon’s killer Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27” that he developed gout, he fired off a series of bizarre “gifts” to his “Suicide Squad” co-stars (from rats to bullets), he pretended to be homeless for weeks to prep for “Requiem for a Dream,” the list goes on and on.
As Leto readies to present his next big role to the world — playing a serial killer in John Lee Hancock’s “The Little Things,” out later this month — the actor has some thoughts on all those (not always nice) claims that he tends to go “full Method” in his prep.
