If you’ve been keeping up with distribution news recently, there’s been one name you’ll have seen pop up again and again: Vertical.
Since the pandemic, the bottom has fallen out of the film business, with more quality indie packages hitting the marketplace than there are distributors willing to take them on. Stepping up, in the years since, to offer many of them a home, is this indie distributor, which appears to be in the midst of its biggest year yet.
Founded in 2012 by Rich Goldberg and Mitch Budin, Vertical comes from humble beginnings, according to partner Peter Jarowey, who notes that the team at one point operated out of “a literal broom closet.” Initially working to establish itself as a resource in securing ancillary revenue for indies, the company has of late has become a theatrical player in its own right. If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Opening nights at major festivals often lean towards the showier end of the spectrum, reaching for films with starry, red carpet-friendly casts and headline-grabbing premises to kick off proceedings in flashy style. The past two Berlinales boasted fun but forgettable openers — Rebecca Miller’s “She Came To Me” and Francois Ozon’s “Peter von Kant” — which is why it’s a pleasant surprise that this year’s Berlinale Opening Night offers something altogether subtler, a genuinely profound low-key gem which will be remembered long after the champagne and sequins have been swept away.
On the surface, “Small Things Like These,” produced by and starring the freshly Oscar-nominated Cillian Murphy (and with “Oppenheimer” co-star Matt Damon also on board as producer) fits the Opening Night brief well. In reality, however, this is a surprisingly understated film, dour and difficult to watch in places, and firmly rooted in Irish culture and history.

The film was written by George Mahaffey (Heatseekers) and directed by Jesse V. Johnson. Producers are Steve Lee Jones for Bee Holder and Matthew Shreder for Concourse.
Concourse handles sales and has sold the project around the world. Financiers include Ashland Hill Media Finance, Filmology Finance, Blue Rider Media, and Tip-Top Productions. Other producers include Simon Williams, Daniel Kresmery and Jonathan Halperyn.

Is the rom-com genre in a Renaissance period? Maybe, maybe not, but “Anyone But You” did alright with critics late last year, and so did “No Hard Feelings,” “Rye Lane,” and even “She Came To Me.” So of course Netflix wants in on the action with “Players,” its latest genre entry that’s ready to premiere on Valentine’s Day next month.

The Barbie movie soundtrack had one of the most recognizable lists of musicians ever. On Sunday, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” won the award for Best Original Song at the 2024 Golden Globes. Both Eilish and her brother Finneas, who wrote the song together, took the stage to accept the award.
During her acceptance speech, Eilish recalled seeing a cut of Barbie for the first time a year ago, noting, “I was very, very miserable and depressed at the time. And writing that song kind of saved me a little bit.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 7, celebrating the past extraordinary year in both television and film. Scroll down for our official odds in all 27 film and TV categories with our projected winners highlighted in gold.
On the film side of the ceremony, “Barbie” heads into the night with the most nominations (nine), and we expect a “Barbenheimer” smash as both it and “Oppenheimer” will go home with four trophies apiece. That would mean “Oppenheimer” bats .500 on its eight nominations; other strong contenders that we predict will win awards include “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things,” which both netted seven nominations.
For television, “Succession” made history with the most nominations in a single year (nine) and will take home the most awards of the night with four. “The Bear” is next in line with five nominations, and we expect it will claim three of those.

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

Today is not just significant for the solstice and the passing of fall into winter, it also is the first bell ringing in the race for Oscar as the Academy has just announced semi-finalists in 10 categories.
Fifteen movies each are moving forward in the contests for International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Original Song and Music Score, plus the documentary, animated and live action short-film categories. Ten movies each advanced today in the categories of Sound, Visual Effects and Makeup & Hairstyling.
Not surprisingly, 2023’s box office champ Barbie leads the way with five shortlist mentions including Original Score, Sound and three for Original Song, but curiously did not make the cut for Hair & Makeup. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon ( including two for the late musical icon Robbie Robertson in Score and Song), and J.A. Bayona’s Spanish Oscar entry Society of the Snow are next with four each.

Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

The fact that Warners’ Barbie so dominated the Critics Choice Award nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning — it landed a record 18 noms, five more than the next-highest scorers, Universal’s Oppenheimer and Searchlight’s Poor Things, which had 13 each — is obviously very interesting. But does it mean that Barbie is truly that much more popular among Cca members than anything else, or is it just more reflective of the fact that there are categories at this awards show that don’t exist elsewhere but inherently benefit Barbie (e.g. best comedy, best young actor/actress, a best song category without a cap on noms from one film, etc.)? Only time will tell.
However, several specific Critics Choice noms, or lack thereof, are more obviously significant.

Anne Hathaway said it was “lucky” that her Barbie film never got made, given that Greta Gerwig’s movie “hit a bullseye.”
In 2017, it was revealed that the Eileen star was attached to Sony’s Barbie film after Amy Schumer dropped out of the project citing “scheduling conflicts” at the time. Though it was set for a May 2020 release date, with Alethea Jones directing, the movie never materialized.
This allowed for Margot Robbie’s production company, Lucky Chap, to come in and convince Warner Bros. to take on the movie, with Robbie starring and Gerwig directing.
Now, on a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Hathaway had nothing but praise for the record-breaking summer blockbuster that brought the famous doll to life.

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

This year, Golden Globes voters bestowed nominations upon more than 100 individual film and TV creatives, including actors, directors, writers, musicians, and even comedians. Most of those who appear on the ballot were widely expected to show up there, but some either slid through without much notice or have not received as much personal publicity as their projects. In order to make sure you didn’t miss any notable inclusions, take a read through our comprehensive breakdown of the year’s undersung contenders.

While a number of films and TV shows received repeated recognition from the Golden Globes when nominations for the 2024 awards show were announced on Monday, a handful of other awards hopefuls were completely left out of this year’s nods.

The first Golden Globe Award nominations issued by the new Golden Globes organization — an overhaul of the late Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with a lot of new members, new rules and a new broadcasting partner in CBS — were issued early Monday morning, and you know what? They’re pretty unobjectionable.
Yes, the categories are larger than they used to be, expanding from five to six slots, which certainly helps to make more stakeholders happy on a morning like this — but also increases the possibility of more bizarre nominees of the sort the HFPA was famous for, like Burlesque, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and The Tourist. And yet, with only a couple of exceptions — a best musical/comedy actress nom for Jennifer Lawrence’s turn in the summer rom-com No Hard Feelings and a best original song nom for a Bruce Springsteen song from a film that I didn’t even remember existed,...

So this was the Golden Globes’ plan for making everybody happy: Expand the number of nominees in every category from five to six.
It’s not a sneaky plan by any means – the Critics Choice Awards, among others, have been doing it for years – but it gives you so much more breathing room when you’re putting together a slate of nominations designed to get the studios, networks and streamers back on your side, which is something the Golden Globes need badly.
After all, doing away with that pesky limit of five nominees per category means you can drop three (!) films largely or partly not in English in your Best Motion Picture – Drama category and still find room for the must-haves “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
It lets you include a surprise actress in the comedy category, Alma Poysti from “Fallen Leaves,” without having to cut out...

On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.

Yorgos Lanthimos drama ‘Poor Things’ won two prizes.
Warwick Thornton was awarded the Golden Frog at Poland’s Camerimage International Film Festival on Saturday (November 18) for drama The New Boy.
The Australian Indigenous filmmaker received the festival’s top prize at a ceremony in the Polish town of Torun, where the director was recognised for his role as cinematographer on the film. Accepting the award, Thornton paid tribute to his fellow filmmakers and said: “I’ve had tears in my eyes the whole week and it’s not because of the alcohol or the cold weather. The New Boy — the story of a young Aboriginal Australian orphan boy that was written, directed and lensed by Warwick Thornton — collected the Golden Frog in the main competition of the 31st EnergaCamerimage international cinematography film festival, which closed Saturday night in Torún, Poland.
Cinematographer Ed Lachman received the Silver Frog for Pablo Larraín’s El Conde, which positions Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a vampire. Robbie Ryan’s lensing of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, the story of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, claimed the Bronze Frog as well as the Audience Award. (Ryan collected the Golden Frog two years ago, for Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon, and Lachman won the Golden Frog in 2015, for Todd Haynes’ Carol.).

Rebecca Miller's new film, She Came to Me, is a bit of a mess, stitching themes and storylines, wild tonal swerves, and overwrought ideas that don't fit together all that well. This fate's especially disappointing because the project seemed ripe with promise and potential. Most of all, it looked like an excellent opportunity for Hollywood to embrace actor Peter Dinklage as a romantic figure. Though he reached peak fame by playing Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, a performance of wit and projected stratagem, it can be argued that his best calling card is an ability to illustrate the heart's amorous yearnings…...

Anne Hathaway is reflecting on how she was told when she was young that she would only be successful until she hit a certain age.
In an interview with Porter Magazine, the actress opened up about her decades-long career and major fashion moments of the last year, at the hand of stylist Erin Walsh.
“When I started out [in this industry] as a child, I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face,” Hathaway told the publication. “The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic.”
However, she acknowledged there is still progress to be made.
“Obviously, it doesn’t mean we should have a ticker-tape parade – someone said this to me the other day: ‘There’s so much to be proud of, and...

Anne Hathaway is 41 years old, which means she has long defied the warning she often heard as a teen actor that her career would not flourish past a certain age as a woman in Hollywood.
“When I started out as a child, I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face,” Hathaway recently told Net-a-Porter’s digital title Porter.”The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic.
