In March 2020, during the first days of the Covid pandemic, IndieWire launched an Instagram Live series. The idea was to hold a causal conversation with talent about their creative process and how they spend their free time, a discussion that took on a very different meaning against the uncertain backdrop of the lockdown. IndieWire instinctively turned to Ethan Hawke to launch the series and set the tone; and at a time when most creatives understandably went dark, Hawke was hungry for the conversation.
Later that summer, the actor-writer-director gave a Ted-Ed talk, “Give yourself permission to be creative.” Even if you haven’t watched the nine-minute talk, you’ve seen it: Excerpts, four years later, still flood most social media feeds on a daily basis.
In the most viral clip, Hawke, discussing what happens to people when they suffer a great loss, said, “Did anyone feel like this before? What is happening to me?...

The beloved sitcom Seinfeld was famously never canceled, because co-creator Jerry Seinfeld and his fellow cast members decided they should walk away after nine seasons, leaving viewers wanting more. But for about a decade, Seinfeld has continuously complained that “political correctness” is stifling comedy of the kind that made him a household name and fabulously wealthy.
As long ago as 2015 — right around when our contemporary ideas of “cancel culture” were beginning to take shape on social media — Seinfeld was talking about not playing college campuses for fear of students labeling his material racist or sexist.

Activision Blizzard as a company has always been surrounded by controversies. From allegations of discriminating against employees on the basis of age and sex, the company has seen it all. Moreover, since the company has been at the receiving end of several lawsuits, they have spent millions in settlements.
Call of Duty is one of the most popular game franchise by Activision
They have also been on the receiving end of severe backlash from gamers. Activision was criticized for alleged anti-trust violations in its Call of Duty eSports market. While this went to a federal court in LA, it remains to be seen how it goes for Activision.
Dr Disrespect slams Call of Duty developer Activision Blizzard
While all of this is not new for the company, they have landed themselves in yet another controversy. This is related to the Blaze Up 4/20 event, which came to Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone.

Ethan Hawke is one of the most unique artists working in the film industry today, and to label him as just another Hollywood star would be a severe misinterpretation of his talents. Hawke is an author of several novels centered around the plight of artists and romantic figures, a screenwriter who has worked alongside many great directors, and the director of three off-Broadway plays. He's done some of his best work on television thanks to "The Good Lord Bird" and crafted some brilliant directorial efforts, including his 2018 feature "Blaze," a highly personal musical biopic set in Austin, Texas.

It’s not often that Ethan Hawke steps behind the camera to direct a film. His last feature was 2018’s “Blaze,” for example. It’s even rarer for his directing efforts to be on a documentary, only helming the 2014 film, “Seymour: An Introduction.” But it appears the actor-turned-filmmaker is about to finish work on his next film, a documentary titled “The Last Movie Stars,” which is heading to CNN+.

MK2 Films has boarded “Blaze,” the feature directorial debut of award-winning Australian painter Del Kathryn Barton, which stars Simon Baker (“High Ground”) and Julia Savage (“Sweet Tooth”).
Now in post-production, the film stars Savage as Blaze, a teenager who is the sole witness to a shocking crime. Struggling to make sense of what she saw, she unleashes the wrath of a dragon coming from her wild imagination. “Blaze” will combine live action with VFX and stop-motion animation techniques.
MK2 Films has acquired world sales rights to the film and is kicking off sales at Venice, where the banner is presenting Mounia Akl’s “Costa Brava, Lebanon” (with Participant and Endeavor Content) in the Horizons section.
Barton previously co-directed “The Nightingale and the Rose,” an animated short film based on an Oscar Wilde story that featured Barton’s illustrative style, with a voice cast headlined by Mia Wasikowska and Geoffrey Rush.

Divided into two chapters, the crime tale opens on a young nun who sneaks out of her isolated monastery to attend to an urgent matter but never makes it back.

The Evercade retro gaming system is growing with the announcement of the Evercade Vs, a new home gaming console from Blaze Entertainment.
Following the successful launch of the Evercade Handheld gaming system in 2020, which became the go-to officially licensed option for many retro game players, the Evercade Vs builds on this by bringing the handheld experience to multiple players. Evoking the nostalgia for retro gaming with its physical only game distribution, the Evercade Vs goes one step further in allowing people to play together. The new console has support for up to four players simultaneously via either the proprietary Evercade Vs Usb Controller provided in the pack (or available to purchase separately for additional controllers). This follows the same levels of comfort that many praised the Evercade handheld for, with ergonomically designed controllers that suit all retro games. Evercade games already come with multiplayer support so the existing library with...

Australia might just be in for an Academy Award win come Monday, with Love and Monsters tipped as a dark horse in this year’s race for the Visual Effects Oscar.
Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt and Brian Cox are on the ballot for their work crafting giant, mutated creatures for the Brisbane-shot post-apocalyptic film, each imbued with its own individual characteristics and unique personality.
But while it might be easy to assume Love and Monsters is a creature feature at first glance, VFX supervisor Sloan says director Michael Matthews made it clear at the outset the film was “not about monsters.”
A comedy adventure, Love and Monsters is set in a world where humans have been forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.

Australian stage and screen professionals can now undertake specialised training in intimacy coordination without having to travel overseas, following the introduction of a new curriculum based on the domestic industry.
Key Intimate Scenes (Kis) has developed a program designed to combine international standards with elements specific to Australia, such as law, union standards, and state-specific industry requirements.
It comes after a dedicated committee of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (Meaa) published Australia’s first set of intimacy guidelines late last year, encouraging the use of intimacy coordinators in productions portraying simulated sex or nudity.
The guidelines, which the screen industry consulted on for 18 months, aim to establish new processes for work involving nudity, intimacy, simulated sexual activity, and sexual violence, so that actors are best prepared and supported.
Kis founder and director, Michela Carattini, was part of the panel which drafted the guidelines, having worked in the industry for...

Bon Jovi rode their 1987 single “Wanted Dead or Alive” — with its power-ballad metaphor about a wandering outlaw, his steel horse, and a loaded six-string — into Eighties jukebox history. And it cemented singer Jon Bon Jovi as a rock-star cowboy in the process. He returned to the Wild West theme, with cowriters Richie Sambora and Holly Knight, for a pair of songs (“Ride Cowboy Ride,” “Stick to Your Guns”) on 1988’s New Jersey too. He and Sambora even wore cowboy hats onstage.

Simon Baker, Yael Stone, Josh Lawson and newcomer Julia Savage are among the key cast of director Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature Blaze (formerly Puff), which recently wrapped shooting in Sydney.
Barton, a dual Archibald prize winner, wrote the script with Huna Amweero (Jade of Death), with the work inspired by Barton’s painting ‘sing blood-wings sing’, which was in turn inspired by Peter Paul and Mary song ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’.
A hybrid work of live-action, VFX and animation, Blaze sees Savage plays a young girl who accidentally witnesses a woman being violently attacked, leaving her catatonic with shock and struggling to make sense of what she saw.
She retreats into imaginary worlds, where Zephyr, the shimmering magic dragon who has been her companion since childhood, allows her to activate her own rage and ultimately find renewal.

Just the other day, we brought you the news that Marvel Studios were considering the possibility of introducing a female Ghost Rider into their shared cinematic universe based on Alejandra Jones, the fourth incarnation of the character in the comic books. And even though the news has barely just broken, there are already actresses being linked to the role, including one that was previously rumored to be in contention for another McU superhero.
The folks at Giant Freakin Robot claim that Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame is under consideration if Alejandra Jones is the direction Marvel end up heading in for their female Ghost Rider. At the moment, however, it’s unclear if she’s the only one they have their eye on or who else might be in the running for the part.

It’s time to look ahead at what Netflix will be delivering over the following week, and it’s another hefty haul coming up across the next seven days. August 25th

Santiago Segura’s “Father There Is Only One 2” has punched €2.14 million ($2.5 million) across its first five days in Spain over July 29-Aug. 2, according to Comscore, maintaining its bid to become Europe’s first Covid-19 era blockbuster.
With some cinema theater takings still to come in, the box office trawl is at least 21% up on opening figures for the family comedy franchise’s first installment, which went on to become Spain’s biggest movie release of 2019, earning a final €14.2 million ($16.1 million) from an Aug. 1 bow.
This year’s opening box office has been made on one more day at the box office, with the sequel bowing on a Wednesday, and the first installment on a Thursday. But “Father 2” grossed $2.5 million from 23% fewer screens in Spain, according to Comscore — some movie theaters remain closed because of Covid-19 — and largely over a weekend that caught many Spaniards going on or returning from vacation.

Sing it with me: “John Brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave, John Brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave, John Brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave, but his soul is marching on!” These were the opening words of the Union’s favorite marching tune during the American Civil War, and a macabre tribute to the abolitionist whose bloody raid against slaveholders in Virginia is considered one of the flashpoints that led to the war. Somehow the new trailer for the Showtime series, The Good Lord Bird, looks just as fittingly extreme in its approach.
The show, which stars Ethan Hawke as Old John Brown and Daveed Diggs as an exceedingly virile Frederick Douglas, is a new limited series from the premium cable network and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. The series is also a clear passion project for Hawke, who in addition to starring and...

Ethan Hawke may be one of the most versatile actors of his generation, but recently he’s found a real sweet spot playing zealots of all stripes. While his raving fanatic take on controversial abolitionist John Brown looks a bit higher energy than the understated suffering of his “First Reformed” minister, there are subtle similarities between the two wayward shepherds. Hawke executive produced his next project, “The Good Lord Bird,” a seven-episode limited series coming to Showtime this August. The premium channel just released an enticing first trailer for the drama, which is produced by Blumhouse Television and based on the eponymous novel by James McBride.
Here’s the official synopsis: “The Good Lord Bird’ is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers during Bleeding Kansas — a time when the...

When Ethan Hawke was promoting “Blaze,” his biopic about troubled singer-songwriter Blaze Foley, he went around Texas talking up the low-budget indie to country music fans. It was a grassroots effort, one that saw staffers at IFC, the studio behind the 2018 film, crisscross the state while ferrying the cast and crew in rental cars from one theater to another.
“Of course, it would have been easier if we’d had $20 million to promote the film,” says Hawke. “But this somehow matched the spirit of ‘Blaze.’ IFC is hungry and scrappy, and they’re not pretentious. Those are the qualities you look for in a good indie film.”

Exclusive: A+E Networks UK is remaking hit U.S. show American Pickers for its free-to-air channel Blaze — and is basing the series in Ireland with a brand new cast of treasure hunters.
Irish Pickers will launch in March this year, with Curve Media producing a 10-part first season after A+E Networks licensed the British production company, which also makes Discovery’s Salvage Hunters, to adapt the U.S. version.
It marks a neat piece of symmetry, given Curve Media’s joint-ceo Rob Carey co-created the original American Pickers show for History in the U.S. through his old company Cineflix Productions. It has run for 21 seasons since launching a decade ago.
Dan Korn, vice president of programming at A+E Networks UK, told Deadline that Carey originally approached him with a talent pitch rather than plans to remake American Pickers, but the idea snowballed into Irish Pickers.

The story of Country Music Hall of Fame duo the Louvin Brothers will be told in a new biopic starring Ethan Hawke, according to Variety. Satan Is Real, currently in development, costars Hawke and Alessandro Nivola as sibling singers Charlie and Ira Louvin.
Best known for their 1958 album Satan Is Real, with its outrageous hellscape album cover, the Louvin Brothers were a study in conflict. While delivering songs like “The Christian Life” and “The Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea,” the siblings often quarreled and lived on the edge, particularly Ira, whose...

Ethan Hawke can be seen in a number of films over recent years. Everything from “First Reformed” to the recent “Stockholm.” And while he seemingly keeps busy with plenty of acting jobs, Hawke is much more calculated when it comes to his directorial gigs. However, after last year’s “Blaze,” the actor-turned-filmmaker is ready to step behind the camera again, adapting the play “Camino Real” for the big screen.

“Teen Spirit,” which premiered at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival, has a scene in which our mild-mannered heroine, an aspiring singer Violet, performs a song with such verve and power that everyone who knows her is left with mouths agape.
They’re all thinking exactly the same thing: “We didn’t know she had it in her.”
And “Teen Spirit” might also have that effect on its viewers — because while we’ve seen great things in the past from Elle Fanning, who plays Violet, we’ve never seen her sing and perform like this. Like the characters on screen, we didn’t know she had it in her.
Fanning’s performance is one of the most surprising things about “Teen Spirit,” a goodhearted and entertaining film about stardom in the “American Idol” era that also marks the directorial debut of Max Minghella. The actor is now following in...

When Ben Dickey returned home to his farm in Louisiana after spending months working on Ethan Hawke’s film Blaze, he fell into a depression. “I was still in a Blaze way,” says Dickey, who, after playing the role of Seventies country outsider Blaze Foley in his acting debut, says he began to assume some of Foley’s personal troubles even after the project ended.
“When it was over, I suffered from not knowing how to pull myself out of Blazetown,” he says. “I thought, the thing that I should do is wander.

The Church of the SubGenius may not be a household name across the country, but beginning in the early 1970s, a pair of enterprising Texas-area satirists turned one wildly overt religious experiment into a genuine phenomenon. That evolving story forms the foundation of “J.R. ‘Bob’ Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius,” a documentary that’s set to play this month’s SXSW Film Festival.
The film is the directorial debut of Sandy K. Boone, who’s served as an executive producer on films like the Ethan Hawke-directed “Blaze,” Keith Maitland’s recounting of the 1966 University of Texas-Austin shooting “Tower,” and Louis Black and Karen Bernstein’s 2016 cinematic profile “Richard Linklater — Dream is Destiny.”
The “Church of the SubGenius” doc features interviews with a number of notable Texans and people who have memories of the church, including Linklater himself, plus Nick Offerman, Penn Jillette, Gerald Casale, and the late Margaret Moser.
