The series' visual style pays homage to many films from the New French Extremity era.
The first season was originally written as a feature film. At the time, the script went through the hands of several industry readers who told Firtion that his script had little chance of being green-lit due to its harsh subject matter. As a result of this, he decided to reformat the script into a web series, calling it "The Jersey Connection", in order to capitalize on the growing popularity of episodic storytelling.
Tim Firtion was originally going to play a supporting role in the series, but decided to play the lead role of Quinn Jacobs. This was done as a means of challenging himself creatively by acting, producing, and directing his own series.
Peter Greene was incredibly excited to play the role of Jordan Blaine in the series' season two premiere. According to Tim Firtion, Greene described the script as "the best he's read in many, many years".
