Downbeat but memorable episode
snoozejonc17 March 2021
The Jennings are given a particularly brutal mission to carry out.

I can't say that I enjoyed this episode due to the especially disturbing subject matter. However, in my view, it cannot be denied that it is very well made and particularly impactful.

The plot is compelling, particularly when it reaches its climactic scenes, which are utterly harrowing. Certain characters for me were already past any point of possible redemption, but this episode pushes them way across that line and it's pretty much acknowledged by one character's reaction in the very last scene. Other plot threads are good such as those involving Paige and Henry. The scenes in Russia were strong, particularly the interrogation scene.

There is an element of greyness around this episode and it's themes, particularly how the system in the Soviet Union punishes individuals for what on the surface looks like justifiable reasons. Then when you look closer and discover that lots of people (and their actions) do not actually match that black and white view of the system.

For almost five full series the development of two characters explicitly implied that they are very different in their dedication to a cause. One seems as if they would change their life in a heartbeat, whilst the other, who values a cause above everything, soldiers on like a machine. There has been a number of false dawns where I wondered if this would be the tipping point, yet it never happened. As Gabriel said previously 'it all adds up' and maybe finally their souls are so weighed down they need a change of life or risk drowning in their own guilt.

I am at a loss as to predict where any form of positive resolution would come from at the end of The Americans (outside of Paige and Henry being safe and going on to live as happy and fulfilling lives as possible) but I am intrigued to find out.

As in all episodes, Dyatkovo has great production values and performances from all actors.

I have never despised a character so much...

In all the shows I have ever watched, I have never despised a character as much as Keri Russel's. Soulless, without emotion, feeling, or even morals, she embodies a pure, primeval psychopath. I screamed at my television after watching this episode. Pure wickedness on the screen.

Still, the episode was well written and we felt the pain that was dealt as the curtains closed.

Dyatkovo

Warning: Spoilers
The Americans has had an underwhelming Season 5, but this was a strong episode. We knew what would happen, Elizabeth is cold-blooded after all, but it did not hurt that we finally got an intense storyline. The Henry and Stan scenes were fairly harmless as well, which has not always been the case with those two this season.

A standout and noteworthy episode.

Mind numbing.

Warning: Spoilers
Dyatkovo is a mind numbing episode. Phil and Liz do have a human side. Years in America have created doubts in the Soviet system. The series flips back to the Soviet Union to show a humane and compassion existed in the enemies lives. Phil and Liz must assassinate a war criminal. Is Dyatkovo who the superior says the war criminal is? Did Dyatkovo do what was said or forced into the atrocities? There is collateral damage with the mission leaving doubt for the deep cover agents. Stan doubts and wants to quit the F B I after Stan's recruitment of spies! Henry's tour of the F B I has Henry's love for Stan, the missing dad of Phil, and America strengthen. I wonder if Henry will spy for Stan in future episodes with discovering Henry's parents lies. Eight out of ten stars.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm getting to the point where I just want these pieces of $hit get whacked and end this. They murder innocents and intentionally destroy lives to further the goals of their beloved USSR. They do this while knowing that they serve a soulless bureaucracy. Phillip has a conscience but it doesn't impact the couple's trajectory, so why do the writers write him with a conscience? The lie to their daughter about the US government's effort to develop a pest resistant wheat strain when there doesn't seem to be a reason to lie. The protagonists seem to have no direction or compass so it's hard as a viewer to suspend disbelief not understanding the character motivations.

Mild spoilers--though nothing worth spoiling

Warning: Spoilers
Sorry, but trying to create drama/excitement from 2 glorified extras won't cut it from the so-called "best show on television". This season has been an rudderless mess. A pointless bore. The most compelling character, Stan, has been relegated to hanging out with angst-ridden teenagers. Seasons 5-6 should have been consolidated in order to make a compelling final season. Life's too short to spend 42 minutes a week on this tedium. I'd rather re-watch Season 2 of Billions or do some prep for the upcoming season of GOT. If you feel this season hasn't missed a beat you must really be into Oleg's trials and tribulations in the motherland. If so, all the power to you.
