Great humorous look at religious prohibition
LorenBieg2 February 2018
Having spent many years in a religious environment rife with things "you can't do", I found this episode particularly amusing. Ansari's satirical parody of his own religious prohibition against eating pork and the pious and hypocritical attitudes of those around him was spot on. His discovery of the epic beauty of bacon as a child was a high-point, as is the discovery of pork barbecue by his cousin who appears like a drug addict, willing to lie and sneak around to get it. In the end, the point is well-made, be who you are.

Interesting subject matter, bad acting

The only real issue I've had with this brilliant show, besides that awful third season, is some of the acting. Sometimes there's some amazing characterisation, but often it's just people walking around very clearly reading lines. Aziz Ansari ended up using his real life parents to portray Dev's parents in the show, and while they're by no means accomplished thespians, there's something charming and authentic about their performances. Ironically, they look like Oscar-nominees when compared to the acting Harris Gani.

Very interesting episode exploring guilt and parental pressure. Acting just needs to be as consistently high-quality as the rest of the show. (Again, except Season 3, that was garbage. Style-over-substance always a bad idea.)
