Paul Reubens, the creator of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” who starred in several projects as the goofy, child-like Pee-wee Herman including 1985’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” has died at age 70, his estate said Monday.
“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” his estate posted to Facebook.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit,” the post continued.
The actor wrote a posthumous statement explaining why he chose not to disclose his cancer diagnosis. “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years.

Several top unscripted TV executives and producers descended on the Variety TV Summit Wednesday to break down how the genre has impact the entertainment business.
Rob Wade, Fox Entertainment’s president of alternative entertainment and specials, said having successful formats is clearly a good thing, but it does come with drawbacks from an economic point of view. He explained that finding and pushing new IP is essential for moving the cultural conversation forward as well as ensuring a strong bottom line.
“One of the things we need to be aware of is that the deals that were done on shows 10, 15 years ago are not the deals that you do now,” Wade told Variety’s Michael Schneider. “To move forward as a media company, we do need to start controlling more IP. At Fox we’ve started our own production entity and the reason for that is simple economics.”

It’s seems like it’s been a long time since Mike Myers has starred in anything. He’s had bit parts in films here and there and even hosted The Gong Show, but it looks like he’s finally found a new project that is worth dedicating himself to.
Variety reports that Myers has jumped on board a new Netflix comedy series that he will star in and executive produce. The half-hour series has received a six-episode order, and it will feature Myers portraying multiple characters.
In a statement Myers said, “I love creating characters, and Netflix has given me a fantastic playground to play in.” I used to be a big fan of Meyers in the 90s during his SNL and Wayne’s World days. He’s kinda fallen off the radar over the years, but I would love to see him back in action and watch him do some great comedy again.

ABC is doubling down on its game-show revival business, adding both Card Sharks and Press Your Luck to its roster of retro redos, where they will join Match Game, $100,000 Pyramid, (Celebrity) Family Feud and To Tell the Truth. (Judging by The Gong Show‘s absence from ABC’s press site, I’d say it got gonged.)
Pre-production on hour-long episodes is underway, with an eye on spring premiere dates, Vulture reports.
Card Sharks debuted in 1978 with Jim Perry as host, inviting contestants to guess audience survey results on a variety of topics, for a chance to flip oversized playing cards on the big board.

It sounds like there’s a chance we might actually see Austin Powers 4 get made. Mike Myers has been wanting to do a fourth Austin Powers movie for a few years now and it looks like he’s been making some headway on it.
During a recent interview with Access, Myers says that he and director Jay Roach are taking their time with making it happen but that it’s “looking good”:
"I've had three kids under the age of seven. They take a long time to write, they always have. Jay's been super crazy. He is doing a fantastic movie right now that he's working on right now. It's looking good, so we'll see."
Maybe when Roach is done with his current project the two will really dive into the project and start getting serious about development. Myers seems optimistic about it. When previously talking about the movie,...

Propagate, run by Ben Silverman and Howard Owen, has acquired Electus, as well as a majority interest in powerhouse talent management and production firm Artists First from Barry Diller’s Iac.
The independent content creation and distribution company is looking to expand its full-service global studio. The deal combines Electus’ popular content, international sales division and valuable library and Artists First’s impressive talent roster and hit shows with Propagate’s already robust content creation capabilities and strategic relationships. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“At Propagate, we are focused on building premium content with the best creative voices from around the world, and being able to support the growth of Electus and all of its partnerships is incredibly exciting to us,” Silverman and Owens said in a joint statement. “We have had the privilege of working closely with Peter Principato and his team of world-class executives and managers...

Updated: Two and a half years after Ben Silverman left the company he had founded, the Iac-owned Electus, to join Howard T. Owens in A+E Networks-backed Propagate, the duo have acquired Electus and its majority stake in management/production company Artists First from Barry Diller’s Iac.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed though I hear it is worth under $50 million. I hear Diller recently put Electus-Artists First up for sale and other main buyers who bid for the assets included Entertainment One.
The acquisitions were financed through the investment secured earlier this year from The Raine Group to accelerate Propagate’s global growth through new ventures and targeted acquisitions. Original investor A+E Networks also owns a stake in Propagate.

Updated with final numbers: CBS’ Big Brother remained Thursday’s top-rated and most-watched show in primetime, but all of the night’s programming dropped in the final Nielsen numbers after pre-emptions for a full night of preseason NFL football were taken into account.
Big Brother finished with a 1.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demo, down from an early 1.8, but still the only show to crack a 1.0 on a night of mostly repeats. ABC had the only originals: the season finale of ABC’s The Gong Show at 8 Pm and back-to-back episodes of Take Two at 9 Pm and 10.
The reruns on CBS gave the network an overall victory in both key metrics.

The NFL helped Fox reign supreme on Thursday night, with a showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns that scored the network a Nielsen ratings touchdown. The preseason game’s numbers topped everything else on the Big 4 for the evening, including ABC’s “The Story of the Royals,” NBC’s “Trial & Error” finale and CBS’s hit “Big Brother.”
Though the former two programs fumbled more than the latter one when stacked against football.

However, due to the nature of live sports, those fast-national numbers are subject to change.

CBS won another Thursday primetime — thanks to “Big Brother” — on a summer night marked by chaotic Nielsen numbers — courtesy of the NFL.
Last night, every broadcast network had at least one pre-emption for NFL preseason games in multiple markets throughout the evening, inflating the early data across the board. Because the numbers were more subject to change than usual, TheWrap has updated the early data with the more accurate fast-national ratings from Nielsen below. And, yes, “Big Brother” still scored a touchdown — just not by as much.
CBS was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 3.9 million, according to final numbers. In between repeats at 9 p.m., “Big Brother” scored a 1.4/6 and 5 million viewers.

Lamar Jackson’s debut as a member of the Baltimore Ravens flew high and not so high last night for the quarterback in the NFL Hall of Fame game’s unofficial start to a new season of football but ratings for the NBC broadcast match-up with the Chicago Bears definitely went down.
With a 4.7/9 in metered market results and a 1.8/7 in fast affiliates, the Ravens 17-16 win over the Chicago Bears in Canton, Ohio took a two-time double digit hit last night from last year. That’s a 13% decline in the early metrics and a harder 18% fall in the first round of 18-49 results from the August 3, 2017 gridiron battle between the always well watched Dallas Cowboys’ 20-18 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
Which, even though the 6.50 million watched the Hall of Fame game and NBC won Thursday night, means the usually virtually meaningless first pre-season game now takes on hefty implications.

The first NFL preseason game of 2018 won in the Thursday overnight ratings but is currently down compared to the comparable game from last season.
This year’s game between the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Ravens drew a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers, though due to the nature of live sports those numbers could be subject to adjustment later today. That still is down from the 2.3 and 7.8 million last year’s game drew initially, though that game came in at a 2.2 and 7.7 million when the final numbers were tabulated.
Elsewhere on broadcast, Fox’s “The Four” hit season highs in both measures with its season finale.
On ABC, “The Gong Show” ticked up in total viewers, while “Take Two” was even.
A steady “Big Brother” was the only original to air on CBS.
The CW aired only repeats.

For now, network TV series typically live and die by their Nielsen ratings. Since most fans do not live in Nielsen households however, the average person's preferences aren't taken into account, and that is frustrating. While we can't change the system, we want to give you an outlet for your opinions, so we invite you to vote for your favorite and least favorite TV show episodes here. Which network programs are the best or the worst? If it were up to you, which TV series would be cancelled and renewed? .

Will Arnett and Mike Myers credit their Canadian roots for their love of the eccentric talent series “The Gong Show.” “In Canada, we didn’t have as many TV stations, and cable came slowly,” said Arnett, who executive produces the ABC revival, now in its second season. “I think Canadians appreciated the absurdity of it.”
Added Myers: “It’s outsider art, because we’re an outsider country. I loved ‘The Gong Show,” I thought it was hilarious. It felt like punk rock to me.”
Under his development deal at Sony Pictures TV, Arnett was looking at a list of franchises the studio owned and we ripe for a revival. When he came across “The Gong Show,” he thought Myers might have some fun with it. He just didn’t know what.
“It was like an open [offer], who knows what he would do,” Arnett said. “If you could get Mike to do it,...

CBS’ Big Brother continued its dominance in Thursday’s primetime, topping all others broadcast programming in Nielsen’s Live+Same Day ratings.
The reality staple, off a tenth from last week’s season-high Thursday number but even with Wednesday’s edition, helped give CBS an easy victory overall in total viewers, teaming with reruns of The Big Bang Theory (0.8, 5.75M) and Young Sheldon its lead-ins; those repeats were the two most-watched shows of the night.
Fox tied CBS for the top spot overall in 18-49s with the 8-10 Pm The Four: Battle for Stardom, which hit a season high in viewers and tied its high in the demo ahead of next week’s finale.
ABC had a full night of originals with The Gong Show, Match Game and Take Two all even with last week. Take Two was the only original at 10 Pm.
