This is the weird thing the show did:
dewlover42024 July 2018
They started out as essentially a parody of The X-Files, doing a comedic monster of the week until Episode 10.

Then, when that didn't do well, not only did they go off the air for more than 6 months, (they actually went off the air after Episode 9), but they also got a new Showrunner, in Paul Lieberstein, who played Toby on The Office (US), (he is also Creator of The Office (US) Greg Daniels' brother-in-law in real life), and ran that show from Season 5 to Season 8.

He took over, and from Episode 11 to Episode 15, it was essentially The Office or Parks and Recreation, (or a show like those), except in a show that started out as a wasted The X-Files parody.

It also changed the plot a bit, with them obviously being unable to do a monster of the week thing, (at least, they couldn't have done it well.) Paul decided that the best plot would be for them to sit in an office all day, being boring and unfunny, worrying about how their office was bugged. There was even a whole episode trying to find, and follow, the wire.

Which, was so bad that it was funny, so I guess there could be some fake points, or something, there.

Then, the last episode? It's like the first half again. After a solid ending to Episode 15, me being kind of sort of hyped up for the series again, they switch the style YET AGAIN, and essentially leave that storyline unresolved. (But, they do answer another storyline, in the last episode/series finale episode, sort of.) I'm not sure if this was an episode from before Paul came on, or if he just wanted to have the series (he probably thought season at the time, if he did do this) finale episode be like the first half of the season, but either way it's confusing and annoying.

There. It's not a full on review, but I feel like semi-thoroughly explaing how this series changed it's style halfway through, is enough, lol!

Thanks for reading, if you did, lol!

until a certain point it was enjoyable, but then...
quaseprovisorio27 October 2021
You know i actually thought this show had potential. The first nine episodes are actually entertaining, being the "sam" episode the best of the bunch. Nothing really out of the box, but i did had fun while watching it. I think they were onto something, also because i did enjoy the major plotlines they were building.

Then they changed screenwriter, the show stopped for some months...and when it came back it was just awful. They put new characters that were unfunny and boring, they decided to change totally the plotline and to forget all the past archs...."the wire" episode is still ok, the other are just almost unwatchable. Its just..why?

At the last episode they realized they did a big mistake, so they put everything back in. So episode 16 follows again the stories the show abandoned and lets go of those boring secundary characters. Unfortunately it was too late.

Too bad, this could have been a cool tv show if they gave time for the plot and the characters to develop. When they decided to give it to a new screenwriter it was when the show ended. Still the first 10 episodes are fine, then skip the show until episode 16.

Started Out Good But Then
phoenison26 July 2018
The episodes up to Episode 9 were perfection. Not sure what happened after that but it's like the joyful soul of the show was snatched away. After Episode 9, I'm not sad that this show was cancelled. If the events had gone differently, I would've been down for the ride. It's like they hired the writers of "Hello, Ladies" after Episode 9 or something.

It started great and became a different show after episode 9
brice_dossin31 December 2019
The way this show was handled is an enigma. It started as a funny spoof of sci-fi series with inventive and funny scenarios. Then, after episode 9, out of the blue, the show became mediocre. It started following a complicated uninteresting plot, the jokes disappeared and the authors also killed the vibe between the main characters. Adam Scott and Craig Robinson are very capable actors, brilliant comedians, their chemistry was promising but it all disappeared. I don't know if the total change of orientation of the show is due to the brilliant mind of a marketing genius, or any other studio executives, or if for an unknown reason the writers resigned, but this move killed a perfectly viable show. I don't remember seeing anything like that before: a show going from very good to totally rotten in a snap. I'd be curious to know what happened. Anyway this is too bad.

Scott & Anderson make it worthwhile.
sanjin_963223 October 2017
I like Adam Scott & Craig Anderson. Enough to overlook most of the flaws this show has.

But, it doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. It's just plain fun, nothing more. The paranormal stuff is kinda OK, but the show could be about anything and it would still work with those two.

Imagine a show about two average (but funny) guys gardening, shooting hoops, knitting camping or whatever. It would still be funny with Craig and Adam. The producers could've let them sit on a couple of toilet seats in booths next to each other and it would still work.

Not much else to say, really. If you like the two and their comedic chemistry then it should work for you. If you don't then that's that. 5.5/10

Runs Out of Steam Halfway Through
briansabin6 December 2021
Someone else made the same point. It started good. Like a comedy X-Files. Then at episode 10 it essentially drops the paranormal stuff; almost entirely. Those aspects become secondary. They just become people working in an office. I don't really know why the direction of the series changed.

so much potential then blah
sheisasnake8 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So I hate being this guy, but this show was good for a while, then it just flopped.

The beginning of the season was a lighthearted mystery a week show with a strong core cast and great chemistry between the leads. The characters were all very competent in their own way, and it was fun to watch. Cheesy jokes, cheesier monsters, but fun. I was really looking forward to watching it come together and seeing where it went.

Then the change... an incompetent jerk just suddenly comes in and becomes the boss, and then it's an awkward workplace sitcom just like the rest of them. It stopped being fun and just got kind of uncomfortable to watch, if that makes sense. The organization went from super secret underground agency to a joke department no one took seriously, and it dropped all of the interesting storylines in favor of characters who only exist to be weird and cringey. I want them to make me laugh, not make me feel embarrassed for them.

It wasn't going to win an Emmy, but it was fun. It was different, it was goofy, it had a lot of potential.

Seriously though, if I wanted to watch The Office I would, god knows there's enough of it.

9 before episode 10, 2 after episode 9
chickory719 July 2018
I am unfamiliar with Carl Tart, but he wrote or co-wrote episodes 2-9. After that, the show changed dramatically. It is no longer funny or quirky. It is just sad and depressing. New characters that add nothing to the show have been seemingly added randomly. They have no apparent skills, they have not been funny, and they seem to do no work. It was a small agency with a small group exploring actual events. Now it is a small agency with a large staff doing nothing. One of the new characters seems to be seriously mentally ill. As to their new boss Merv, get to the point. He is a horrible conventional man in a role that requires anything but. He has to have something on someone to have gotten that job, but I guess this will never be explored. Every episode I hope his tedious tenure will be over. I keep watching hoping things will turn around. Oh bring back Carl Tart!! The basic core cast is wonderful. Perhaps good writing could actually incorporate the new characters. I realize this show was recently cancelled. As it is, I'm not sad. As it was, it is such a loss. I used to so look forward to this show.

Skip episodes 10-15 and it's a great show
stefan_christensen29 October 2020
It seems like the show was originally 10 episodes, but for some reason they decided to force 6 really bad wannabe The Office episodes in before the finale.

Episode 16 appears to pick up where episode 9 ended, with none of the previous 6 episodes seemingly having affected the storyline whatsoever.

Episodes 10-15 also introduced a bunch of characters that are gone again in the finale.

What did they do??!?!!!?
bbreithaupt24 June 2018
The first 9 episodes were awesome. They took some time off and came back and destroyed the show. I watched episode 10 and only made it through part of episode 11. IT NOW SUCKS!!!!!! No longer watching. So sad. If you read the series original description the show no longer resembled that.

Craig Robinson and Adam Scott are the show.
DarkVulcan292 October 2017
Just watched the first episode and I gotta say it's pretty entertaining, nothing great but does not try to. It's like a funny version on X-Flies, the pairing of Craig Robinson and Adam Scott is what makes the show fun, they're an odd couple and have great comic chemistry, the two start in the dreadfully unfunny Hot Tub Time Machine 2(2015).

The effects are good on a T.V. budget. Everybody here plays it perfectly straight next to the comedy of Robinson and Scott. The show has a Ghostbusters and Men in Black like feel to it, I hope it goes for 3 or 4 seasons, the show never takes itself too seriously, and that is the enjoyment of it.

I liked this show a lot
jimmyolsenblues18 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So. Look. This is a good show. This could have been written as a comedy X-files. There is tons of mythology and plot lines they could have gone. So with no spoilers, I say "someone" has a significant other, and that Significant Other has a back story. Now the show for all intensive purposes has been cancelled. And I feel that this is going to be a plot hole that will never be filled, and I hate that about television. You commit to show, you watch it, you hope you are going to be entertained. And now we are cancelled and we will never know their backstory which clearly was something they were going to expand.

What Happened???
Anno30316 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This show started off with promise, the first 3 episodes were a bit shaky but it started to get better from there on. It was building the dynamic between the two main characters well, as they went around dealing with supernatural events but went straight downhill after episode 9.

I mean they just pulled a fast one, making the show center around boring bottle office episodes instead as well as throwing a wrench into the budding partnership between Max and Leroy by making Leroy reveal that he had slept with Annie. No prior build up at all with absolutely no chemistry, just "oh yeah bruh, we banged after getting drunk" then having Annie disregard all the previous episodes where she was obviously into Max by just saying he was the only one flirting and shifting her interest outta nowhere to Leroy. They also didn't care to explain what happened to her douchey boyfriend who appeared in one of the previous episodes or what ever happened to Max's wife? I dunno, these recent changes just left a bad taste in my mouth, it was like everyone went "well we got cancelled so might as well do anything we want" and just threw all plot consistency into the gutter. Overall I'm still giving this a 5, since like I said I did enjoy the first 9 episodes and at this point I'm just sad to see what became of the show in the end.

Started out well, but...
mikedjstone16 July 2018
Initially, the series began with an interesting storyline, funny, relatable characters and decent enough cinematography. The, June arrived with the second half of the season. It's format, along with the storyline came to a complete stand still and major change! It was like it became a different show! It went from something like a funny X-files spoof, a little MIB humor, and changed to a dark, dreary wannabe "The Office" type of show and the quality is the same! Yes, it worked for the office, not for this show at all! So far, the last three episodes half been filmed almost entirely within the office!!! I haven't researched whether or not there have been some changes in production, writing or directing, but SOMETHING MAJOR happened! Whatever it was doomed a show that honestly had potential!

Rating ONLY applies if you skip episodes 10-15
jessedurona20 August 2022
DO NOT WATCH EPISODES 10-15. I BEG YOU.

To echo what everyone else here is saying, the show started out as a fun X-Files parody, but for some reason (show-runner change, studio interference, whatever) it turns into a borderline unwatchable ripoff of The Office. The plot is thrown out the window, new characters are introduced, and it's so depressing I had to stop to take a brake midway through some of the episodes (they're 231 minutes!). Even if you're a die-hard fan of shows like The Office and Parks & Rec, I can't stress enough how embarrassingly-bad these episodes are.

But then, miraculously, the last episode picks up where episode 9 left off, ignoring every (seriously, everything) that happens in 10-15. I assume, since the show ended, that they wanted to bookend it on streaming, but I'm baffled nonetheless.

It's a fun show, but ONLY if you skip 10-15. Do. Not. Watch. Them.

1-9, then 16.

You think I'm kidding, but I'm not.

1 star with the included episodes. 1.

I'm begging you.

Worst permacliffhanger ever!
ethan-brown-142-46607917 September 2018
Stop sabotaging good shows with new show runners. I can't believe that I thought just because of all this talk of time travel & alternate realities you were going to retool 'Hello Boys' into concluding things. Now we have two unresolved cliffhangers!

Could of been great
shanepsmith873 February 2022
I just watched the 1st and I assume only season and boy.. this show had potential but it could just never figure out what it wanted to be.

Craig Robinson and Adam Scott have the chemistry and comedy chops (The Office, Parks and Recs alum I mean cmon! ) but the story line writers dropped the ball. The Pilot episode was not a great start, and the following episodes seemed rushed with random paranormal story lines. I actually enjoyed the later episodes more than the beginning ones.

I give this a 7 rating only because even throughout the random storylines, there's some pretty funny dialogue and interaction between the characters and especially with Craig and Adam. Even though I was annoyed at the overall story, I still found myself laughing at something in each episode.

I'm also pretty sure they left an outtake scene in one of the last episodes with Adam and Craig breaking character and laughing ( I thought it was hilarious that they left it in). So I know they had fun making this show and it could of been great, but the multiple random story lines just couldn't hold it together.

Initially this was a fun show when we started watching from the very episode. We have decided differently since the first 3 June episodes. Now it is playing out just like another show we lost interest in.

Had so much Potential
gloomgirl-414864 March 2023
The show was cute at the start then they had like a change mid season and brought in a bigger cast to make it more of an ensemble comedy. They added some really talented comedic actors and the show just needed a little time to come into its own. They also change the way the show was shot. It started out shot with regular sit-com style camera work, then went to like a POV type camera shots like the show the office. This really comes out when binge watching. Lastly if you watch on HuLu episode 16 is out of order. Based on content, cast, and story line I think it should have been episode 2. So 15 should have been the last episode.

Shouldn't have retooled
bdonov4 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Really enjoyed this show... or at least I did, up until it retooled as an "Office" sitcom. The retool showed an odd meta-commentary on the show's perceived troubles. The characters abruptly shifted to sad and directionless. One of the leads sported a "break-up"/depression beard, while the other neared an existential crisis. One bluntly hinted that they would no longer be doing a monster of the week. He later would write "who's watching us" on a white board. A subsequent episode depicted a demotion/power struggle which debated what the characters would focus on. A bunch of new employees were introduced in the retool, who had little to do other than look/act like the lowest IQ DMV workers. The vast thrilling workplace with a team of seen and unseen specialists turned into a claustrophobic 9-to-5 group of clock-punchers in a single studio, who warmed chairs and drank coffee all day for a government paycheck. The contrived romantic relationship drama introduced in a later episode betrayed the "will-they-won't-they" character development and made it a challenge to like any of characters anymore. Further episodes depicted how the fascinating top secret organization was actually a laughing stock and always was. The show seemed to be setting up a redemptive arc, but only got to depicting several characters decline to rock bottom, which created a horribly depressing affair.

Why its so bad?
sfelix7510 October 2017
I tried really hard to like this show, but I just can't. On the surface they got it all covered: 1. Syfy comedy that casts two very capable comedians in their own right, they even got Profiler in the supporting role! 2. Bearable special effects - not wow but OK. 3. trailer did look promising...

So why its so bad: they forgot to get writer for the show! Its not because the plot is complete rubbish and its not that main characters are bad stereotypes for black cool cop and white wienie - The show is just not funny! Actors do what ever they could to save it, but its hopeless: there is no chemistry between the characters nor the actors...

And don't sell me that hard to make science fiction comedy sh!t! Ash VS Evil Dead sounds familiar? or more recent People of Earth? Hack, even Orville has more potential!
