- Will's connection to a shadowy evil grows stronger but no one's quite sure how to stop it. Elsewhere, Dustin and Steve forge an unlikely bond.
- Will is sent to the hospital in the Hawkins Laboratory but the doctors can not find a reason for his pain. Murray makes many copies of the tape to send to the newspapers. Meanwhile Dustin and Steve find that Dart has escaped from the basement digging a hole out. Bob joins Joyce in the hospital while Dr. Sam Owens shows Hopper the size of the Gate. Will awakes with no memories and Dr. Owens finds that he and other hosts are connected to a hive through a virus. He discusses with the other scientists how Will's brain has been affected by the shadow monster. Steve, Dustin, Lucas and Max use pieces of meat as bait expecting to catch Dart in the junkyard. But the creature comes with other Demogorgons and trap the kids in the bus. Out of the blue, they return to the tunnels to attack the soldiers that had been sent there based on Will's information.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Will is taken to the hospital, severely in pain. Joyce expresses her frustration that Owens and the other doctors from Hawkins Lab are not doing anything to help Will. Dustin and Steve get the bat with the nails and go to face Dart. They find his molted skin and a hole in the cellar wall leading to the maze of tunnels underground.
Murray makes a copy of the tape of Owens admitting culpability and mails it to the Chicago Sun Times and he, Nancy, and Jonathan celebrate with vodka. Murray suggests that they stay the night in his guest room, and scoffs when Jonathan asks to sleep on the sofa. He analyzes their feelings for each other, not believing that their relationship is platonic. He suggests that they share a bed. They are each seen mulling over his words, Nancy in the guest bed and Jonathan on the sofa. They get up, see each other, make light of Murray's analysis and go back to bed, but then get up a second time and this time they kiss each other passionately.
Hopper recovers under the watch of Owens and the others from the lab. He and Owens go back into the Upside Down, this time wearing protective gear, and see the giant mass of weeds that is growing. Owens explains that they can't burn them because of the connection to Will - any time they are burned, his body goes through unspeakable pain. Joyce fills Bob in about Will's situation, explaining that he will probably have to sign confidentiality agreements. Joyce and Bob go to see Will but Will doesn't recognize Bob.
Lucas connects with Dustin who fills him in on the Dart situation and tells him to meet him and Steve. Lucas goes to see Max and tells her that he has proof of the story he told her.
Owens examines Will and asks some questions to test his memory. Will doesn't remember Owens or Hopper, and needs some time before he can remember Mike. He does not remember helping to rescue Hopper or anything up to him getting hurt by the Hawkins soldiers burning the vines. He says, "It upset him," referring to the shadow monster that is possessing him. The doctors experiment by torching a single vine, which causes Will pain.
In the woods, Dustin and Steve leave a trail of meat for Dart and they have an unlikely bonding experience as Steve gives Dustin tips for interacting with girls.
Hopper tries to contact Eleven. He leaves a message apologizing for being away for so long and for getting angry at her. Eleven, who is at Becky's, misses his heartfelt message.
The doctors discuss Will's condition and argue that they can't keep delaying burning the vines. They say that they need to go ahead with it and accept that Will might be a casualty. Will tells Mike that he thinks he knows how to stop the shadow monster. He examines the photos of the drawings and tells the doctors that the shadow monster doesn't want him to see something in a particular area.
Dustin, Steve, Lucas, and Max meet at the junkyard and set a trap for Dart. Max opens up to Lucas about her home situation. Finally, Dart appears, now much bigger. Steve goes to confront him, but then other creatures like Dart appear. The kids all hide in the bus as the monsters try to get in. Something draws the monsters away from the bus and they all flee.
Soldiers investigate the area of the tunnels Will sent them to. Hopper, watching on the cameras, recognizes it as the place he almost died. Will stammers that he is sorry and tells Joyce that the shadow monster made him do it. It is revealed that the shadow monster possessing Will made him send the men into a trap. The demo-dogs appear and attack and kill the men. Will tells Joyce that she should go and that "they're almost here." The creatures are seen coming to where they are in the lab.
