Could have been a whole lot better had they not had the dog talk. Been there done that.

For adults watching this movie with your kids...
agsconsulting287418 June 2020
OK, it's a kids' movie, so kids will probably like it much more than I did.

My initial expectations had to be lowered significantly as the movie progressed. If you actively engage in a willing suspension of disbelief it will help. The movie is average, but in many places tries too hard to be something more. And the pace reminded me of someone trying to drive a stick shift for the first time.

The plot is one that has been used before in some form or another: talking dog as a result of a science experiment gone awry; greedy bad guy tries to steal the technology; you know the rest -- no need for spoilers here.

If you tend to easily spot plot holes, or cheesy gimmicks, you will be kept painfully busy. The happy ending, in addition to being predictable, was less than satisfying.

If you're able to put all of the adult thinking aside for 90 minutes, you might actually enjoy the movie.

Nothing special here, just boring and cheesy. Most of the actors phoned it in.

How cute...

How cute, very childish, but with adult problems (divorce), good action scenes, the puppy shots are fun and I think Josh Duhamel is extremely beautiful and sexy, that was that little dance, ayah...

Great characters. I especially love that you can hear the dog speak
rannynm11 June 2020
I like Think Like A Dog because it has an interesting story about a boy named Oliver (Gabriel Bateman) who can suddenly hear everything his dog is saying. It's funny to hear what his dog, Henry, has to say. I always wonder what dogs think, so it is fun to find out what Oliver's dog has to say to him. I like everything about this film.

The storyline follows Oliver working on his science fair project. His friend from China, Xiao (Minghao Hou), gives Oliver an upgrade for his science project and, the next day, Oliver can hear everything his dog Henry is saying. Henry helps Oliver deal with his family. His parents, Lukas (Josh Duhamel) and Ellen (Megan Fox) are thinking of splitting up and selling their house and Oliver doesn't know about this until Henry tells him and he confronts his parents. There's a bit of a twist when it comes to Mr. Mills (Kunal Nayyar), who judges the science fair. He turns out to be totally different than what I originally thought. He wants to be the most famous scientist in the world, but you have to watch the film to see if he's successful, and whether Henry and Oliver save the day.

The characters in this film are super funny. The actors really portray their characters well. Oliver (Gabriel Bateman) plays a very believable smart, but shy guy. And Henry, his furry friend, is probably the funniest character in the movie. I wish he were my pet! The camerawork by Giles Nuttgens are flawless; it really seems as if you're in the same room as the characters. My favorite part of the film is when Oliver asks a girl named Sophie (Madison Horcher) to the school dance. I won't give away whether or not she says yes, but it's cute how nervous Oliver appears, and how much he needs his dog to help him get the courage to ask her.

The message of the film is to trust yourself and your dog's instincts. Surprisingly, your dog might know what's best for you more than you do. Even if your dog can't talk, it can still make you happier - and possibly save your life. I don't have a dog yet, but I am always begging my mom for one.

I give Think Like A Dog 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 17, plus adults. Reviewed by Cadence G., KIDS FIRST! Film Critic. For more reviews by youth, visit kidsfirst dot org.

an alright family movie
LetsReviewThat2630 April 2023
Think like a dog was an alright movie overall. Gabrielle bateman plays oliver. A boy that is very smart and likes to create inventions and even one for his dog henry thats a microship. After a science experiment goes wrong he can sunddleny hear his dog and its not long before villians are on the trail. Josh Duhamel and megan fox play his parents. An odd choice but it worked well for the role. Oliver now must help his dog escape the evil people and the feds and ruinte his parents before its too late. This movie has some charm and some pretty funny scenes but overall its just an alright film with a descent enough cast.

I love Josh Duhamel!! However, this movie lost me. My 15 year old did not care for it either. I just think the target audience is probably 12 and under.

Cute, entertaining movie with wholesome values. Filmed mostly in New orleans.
TxMike15 August 2020
This is a good change of pace, a family movie without sex, violence, or filthy language, hard to find these days. A young boy of 12 or 13 is smart and for a science fair has invented an electrical device which he thinks will allow him to read minds, to discern what others are thinking. Teaming with another boy, located in China, they illegally tap the computing power of an orbiting supercomputer but something goes wrong. The biggest upshot being the boy could now read the mind of his pet dog. They go on to have interesting discussions.

So "think like a dog" has that connection, plus as his pet tells him, dogs are a lot happier because they don't clutter their minds too much, and people would be happier if they would learn to think like a dog.

While all this is happening the boy's mom and dad seem to be falling out of love, he is talking about moving away to take a college coaching job, the parents are thinking of splitting up, much to the displeasure of their son. Ultimately "thinking like a dog" helps them get back on a good path.

My wife and I enjoyed this movie, we watched it at home on DVD from our public library. It is always nice to see scenes of the New Orleans area.

This is not a comedy film! Not laughable, and full of annoying overuse scene! Bored to freaking death!
kwenchow9 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a dog "Henry" talking about human invented the satellite, and the introduction of his owner "Oliver" scene! As turnout, this film is about Oliver accidentally invented a telepathy device, that can let him communicate with his dog! And a tech company boss "Mr. Mills" want to acquire Oliver's tech! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the playing dumb scene, overuse of the talking with dog scene, overuse of the annoying dancing scene, and overuse of the blackout scene! Barely intense scene is, a bunch of dogs chasing Mr. Mills! At the end, Oliver helping his father "Lukas" reconcile with his mother "Ellen"! Oliver and his parents move to a new house! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Censored?
injury-6544713 October 2020
I have tried to submit a review for this film twice and both times it's been rejected. Is it because I referred to this film as being perhaps more stinky than the leavings of the main pooch? Anyhow I'll try again. It's almost worth seeing the start just to see how they shoehorn in the Chinese market appeal. Blatant and sad.

Josh Duhamel though... drool. Even as an old daddy there's just something about him.

It's made for the Chinese market, and it shows. It's done on the cheap... voiceover & no mouth movement on the talking dog, is so 90's.

A silly movie starring a cute dog and a handsome dad
lisafordeay1 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Think Like A Dog is a 2020 film directed by Gil Junger(10 Things I Hate About You,Only You) and stars Josh Duhamel(Safe Havan),Megan Fox(Transformers) and Gabriel Bateman (no relation to Jason Bateman btw) and tells the story of a smart 12 year old named Oliver who creates an experiment where he can hear other people's minds. But when he accidentally uses his experiment on his dog Henry,he can hear what his dog is saying. Meanwhile Oliver is trying to prevent his parents from splitting up(Duhamel and Fox) while also protecting his dog from scientists who discover that Oliver's experiment is a success.

Overall this film is plain stupid. It reminds me of a film I saw as a kid (I think it was called Paws and it had Billy Connelly in it).

If you love Josh Duhamel or Megan Fox then go watch something else starring them instead.

Family film for PARENTS and KIDS
gjunger10 June 2020
A sweet, funny family film that explores life through the unconditionally loving, gratitude filled eyes of a dog. Maybe all of us can learn a thing or two about approaching life from a place of gratitude. Feel good movie.

A very mediocre script and with some very funny scenes, they balance so that Think Like a Dog is neither a very bad nor a very good movie.

not sure who this was aimed at.
ksf-222 November 2023
Probably made for a younger audience. Many of the jokes are just easy, gratuitous humor. It IS a fun premise. The kid invents something that let's him understand the dog's thoughts! The kids are all precocious.. they are saying things that kids this young just wouldn't know.. or say. It's a love story, where oli (gabriel bateman) has a crush on a classmate. But they kind of drop that storyline. Lots of current adult stars in here. Duhamel, fox, nayyar. When oli's parents are about to break up, he gets sad and emotional, yelling at them. Sad music. This all works if we all buy into everything...that little kids say all these clever, adult things, and that oli can talk with his dog. I guess I just wasn't in the mood or something. Just wasn't really willing to buy into it all. The dog makes so many wise-ass snide comments, trying to be so clever. Everyone does a good job with the lines they are given, but the script needed a make over. And a kidnapping. But that gets dropped. And something about satellites? Really? And the dog uses the word "ennui"? If it's aimed at younger kids, who says ennui?? Lost me, just about there. Then, lots of fart jokes. From the dog. Written and directed by gil junger.

An incredibly enjoyable journey for the entire family
Mysterygeneration10 March 2024
Think Like a Dog is a heartwarming comedy about a boy named Oliver and his furry best friend, Henry. When Oliver's science experiment goes awry, he gains the ability to understand Henry's thoughts. This unexpected twist leads to hilarious situations and a deeper bond between the boy and his dog.

The film is charming and humorous, but its best moments are the doggy inner monologues. Despite some mild innuendo and name-calling, parents should be advised that the film is generally suitable for a family movie night.

The movie's humor is silly and lighthearted, perfect for both kids and adults. Think Like a Dog reminds us about the importance of family, friendship, and appreciating the simple things in life. Hearing a dog's thoughts is a fun twist that adds a fresh perspective to the classic boy-and-his-dog story.

The plot is well-known and doesn't contain many surprises. The emotional moments could have been bigger, and the characters are a little bit superficial.

Chinese movie, American and Chinese actors speaking English?
searchersd14 April 2022
I guess this is what a boy and his dog movie would be like if made for an audience in China. Megan Fox still looks good but still can't act. Gabriel Bateman overacts to make up for this, while Josh Duhamel seems to be thinking, "What the heck. I'm getting paid for this, so..." The actor voicing the dog does the best job, with the dog a close second. Lower than a B movie, but OK to watch with kids if there's nothing else on.
