- Alan: You do it. You'll be better than me.
- Harry: No.
- Alan: Think about it.
- Harry: No.
- [Alan sighs]
- Harry: Is there a gardener?
- Alan: Eh?
- Harry: In the play, is there a gardener?
- Alan: No. Not that I know of. Why?
- Harry: I could be a gardener.
- Alan: There isn't a gardener.
- Harry: I'd be a good gardener.
- Alan: There isn't one.
- Harry: Well, happen there should be.
- Celia: [practicing lines with Alan] You need to have more of a manner, Alan. You know, these are sophisticated people. They live in Kent for goodness sake.
- [first lines]
- Gillian: [off-screen] John and Judith? Are you serious?
- Caroline: [off-screen] This is why I'm suggesting doing it at my house rather than yours.
- [On-screen, Caroline and Gillian are shopping at a supermarket]
- Caroline: Greg wants to come and spend time with Flora, so that's another reason to be at our house.
- Gillian: [nodding] Mm. What about Bridget?
- Caroline: [sighs] Bridget...
- Gillian: [mockingly] Bridget.
- Caroline: ...will be with her parents in Chipping Norton.
- Gillian: Of course she will. Of course that's where she comes from.
- Caroline: Yeah. So... What do you think?
- Gillian: Yeah, let's... Let's do it at your house.
- Gillian: I do care about you.
- Robbie: [carefully] Good.
- Gillian: Which is why...
- Robbie: Why what?
- Gillian: Why I'm worried.
- Robbie: About what?
- Gillian: Eddie.
- Robbie: Eddie?
- Gillian: I... I think he's in the barn. That's the third accident you've had in there. I think he never left. And he knows we've got married, and he doesn't like it.
- [last lines]
- Alan: Well, I suppose you were Queen of Sheba when we got wed. You might as well be Cleopatra as well.
- Celia: Yeah. And you're going to be my Mark Antony, Alan Buttershaw.
- Alan: You think?
- Celia: Mm, yeah. Your legs can bestride the ocean. And I don't want to hear any excuses about arthritis.
- Judith: [repeating a name just spelled out on a Ouija board] Spike?
- Raff: Ooh, no, that's freaky, that. We used to have a cat called Spike, a black cat. He got chopped up in a combine in the lower field. You remember, Mum?
- Gillian: Yeah. Yeah, I remember. It was me that... I'm not sure I wanna do this anymore.
