Undertale proves that you don't need good visuals to make a great game!
daviddevilliers5411 July 2016
Undertale is an RPG game where you play as a child and fall into the underworld learning what happened to humans and monsters living in harmony. As you progress through, you must find a way out using the power of "DETERMINATION".

When I first saw this game I was like, "Ugh... too much pixel art. This is NOT my kind of game." I have also never really liked RPG games but I guess I underestimated it. This game holds so many secrets, mysteries, surprises and story. Here are the five reasons to why Undertale is one of the greatest games ever made:

1. The story: This game has three fates; Pacifist, Genocide and Neutral. You get to choose which path you take. You can either spare every creature you see or murder every living thing in the Underground. Or kill certain creatures and see what the outcome is. Whatever it is, it is YOUR choice!

2. The characters: The character development is so well done in this. You would eventually fall in love with the characters. Now what I mean by 'fall in love' with the characters, I mean you will simply love them as if they are really your friends or enemies.

3. The music: The music is amazing! The songs are so catchy and the boss music are so well done. The soundtrack is sold separately for a good reason.

4. The battle system: Each battle is different and cleverly well done.

5. The emotions: No game has ever left me filled with emotions as much as Undertale did. The characters will leave you either happy, sad, creeped out, weirded out, scared, angry, depressed, etc. When I played this game, I got the feels so much.

So what I am trying to say here is that if you haven't played Undertale, I would highly recommend it. Don't be fooled by the visuals because with a game like this, there is no need for great artwork.

An Amazing Game About Choices, Consequence, and Love
bmanlikesmovies224 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Though I will stay as spoiler free in this review as much as possible, I implore people to play Undertale for themselves before looking anymore into it. The less you know the better. This is a game best played knowing nothing before playing it. In this review though, I will review the basic gameplay features as well as the overall feel of the game without spoiling the main the story.

At a first glance the most noticeable thing about this game are it's characters and art style. Every single character in this game (even your "enemies") not only have their own unique personalities, but also their own backstories, dreams, and goals as well. The amount of effort that went into the writing of this game is mind blowing. I personally loved all the characters and their charming personalities. My thoughts on the graphics of this game (which are unapologetically old school) is that this game is trying to recapture an old SNES style. It is very reminiscent of old games like Earthbound, in which this game was heavily influenced by.

However, the main factor that separates Undertale from others games is its unique take on RPG gameplay and storytelling in general. It is incredibly self aware and even at times feels like spoof of the genre all together. The way this game breaks the fourth wall at times though is literally bonkers and does it in ways where the story and gameplay basically become one with each other. The story of the game is inherently very decision based because of this.

Some may argue though that the game may guilt you into playing the game in a certain way. I strongly disagree with that. Actions have consequences, and if you are tough enough to handle the consequences of your actions than you can play the game however you want. But if you have to make a hard decision in the game, the game won't just ignore that decision. That's why I love this game. I think this game is trying to take on a more realistic approach to the old school RPG format where if you make a decision to proceed with the game in a certain way, the characters in the game will react to that decision in realistic ways. I personally applaud the game for actually doing that because your decisions have actual weight to them and are based on your emotional connection to the characters. It gives the game an uniquely dark edge!

I will end off by saying this... I adore this game. I love the fact that I got to experience an RPG in a brand-new way and that it took me on an emotional journey that we don't get in a lot of games today. Yes it may not have best graphics in the world, but the story, characters, gameplay, music, secrets, and humor is so charming it totally made up for it. But above all else though, the deep message about actions having consequences was the thing that pushed this game to greatness.

Don't be fooled by its modest appearance!
those_who_dig21 February 2017
In 'Undertale' you play Frisk, an androgynous young human who has entered a world of bizarre creatures. Luckily for Frisk, the first of this alien landscape's inhabitants to be encountered is a very helpful goat who takes them into her home and provides them with food and shelter -- but not all encounters end in such hospitality.

From socially awkward aeroplanes to demonic flowers and pun-loving skeletons, your travels in 'Undertale' will acquaint you with a wide variety of eccentric characters, all of whom have different ideas about Frisk, the first human to enter their land in a long time. The plot may sound ludicrous, but I advise even rather serious sorts to give it a chance. As the story advances, you'll realise that you've grown surprisingly attached to (some of) the things that call the Underground home.

The game features a lot of fighting, typically performed by pressing a certain key at the right time and using the arrows to dodge enemy hits in a 'Space Invaders' style. You're also given the choice to spare the creatures you come across (even the bosses), which has huge narrative implications.

Creator Toby Fox's music in 'Undertale' rather simple but highly enjoyable, and certainly enlivens both the exploration and combat. I was pleasantly surprised at how appropriate the various tracks are, and how Toby Fox seemed to implement each one at just the right moment.

This is a very cleverly designed game, and its simple appearance belies its intricate narrative and excellent writing. An outstanding job.

Incredible game
murilorfreitas18 July 2017
1. Inventive gameplay mechanics

2. Best soundtrack for any game I've seen.

3. Incredibly extensive story.

4. 20+ Endings based on your choices.

5. No fear to break the game limitations. (you'll understand this if you play the game)

6. Memorable characters.

At my point of view, the only bad points on this game are the graphics, the fandom and the lack of updates, sequels or anything related to it after it's release. And since I don't care for graphics, have no need for a sequel and am not in any group related to undertale, none of these affect me. So in short, great game, you'll not regret it.

An amazing throwback to the old days of JRPG's
keybladek16 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
You can't deny that some of the best games of all time are RPG's. Final Fantasy, Pokemon etc. but Undertale gives them all a run for their money. This is one of the first (if not the first) RPG to allow you to beat the game *without killing anyone!* And while that may sound good enough, there's more! The game is tailored to how you play, for instance, you may choose to kill everyone in the game. In this case, you can loot shops and towns as everyone who once lived or worked there is gone. Alternately you may choose to spare everyone! In which case you are treated to a whole gang of new friends. All in all this game is a masterpiece, it has an amazing OST, Great characters, a heartwarming story and great combat! Go buy this game!

This game is like the childhood game I wish I had
larkidyl7 March 2017
I absolutely love this game; its funny, sad, dramatic, creepy, bright, happy, has a great soundtrack, sans, etc. It truly was a great experience. Pacifist route was a very nice playthrough with a nice little ending to it, and genocide was as freaky and difficult af as it should have been. Very challenging, and yes, I did indeed beat sans. That was brutal. I just wish the game was longer. My only complaint :)

behold the power of guilt
subscriptions4 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't read anything about this game before playing it, merely saw that it was an ugly game with overwhelmingly positive reception. I bought it expecting it to have great writing, characters, plot, or gameplay, and was disappointed when all of those things turned out to be sub-par as well. Reading the reviews after playing the game, I couldn't believe them.

The style described by others as cute and quirky comes across to me as annoying and puerile; the author acts as if breaking the fourth wall and being self-deprecating is the height of wit. The characters are clichés and shallow caricatures of people he seems to know in real life. The combat is boring and frustrating. The one interesting idea in the game, "monsters are people", can't single-handedly carry the entire game. Before the end I couldn't wait for this, one of the least enjoyable gaming experiences of my life, to be finally over. The ending was a perfunctory deus ex machina.

The huge disconnect between my opinion of this game and the average opinion has made this a psychological puzzle, more interesting to me than the game itself. I believe I understand the problem. The game's payload is a single emotional experience. The emotion is guilt; it relies on a plot twist, and its effect is increased by making the people in the game cute and familiar. I didn't identify with the guilt trip as much as some--the payload was so underwhelming for me, that it didn't even occur to me that it might move someone enough to like the game.

If you want more about guilt, play Planescape: Torment or Star Control 2 or read Crime and Punishment or an Ayn Rand novel. If you're looking for a cheerful, benevolent RPG (as one might expect this one to be based on its description), play The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. If you like having the choice between being good and evil, play Planescape: Torment, KOTOR 1 & 2, or Fallout 1 & 2. If you like Undertale's characters, look into Baldur's Gate (I don't like either, but like Jar Jar Binks they're similarly silly and annoying and beloved by people who baffle me).

I believe this game's lesson is: if you treat cutesy things harshly, you will feel guilty. Players consequently find it impossible to criticize the game, and try to make themselves feel like good people by singing its praises. That's why it makes sense for fans to say that people who criticize this game have no soul. The characters in this game died for your sins; you should honor their creator, who made them in his image. Undertale guilt-trips players into giving it positive reviews. Note that the author chose only negative comments from critics to quote on the game's store page, which seems puzzling until you realize that this game's reception relies on emotional manipulation. My favorite thing about Undertale is that when you die, you are told to "stay determined"; I couldn't have finished the game without this encouragement, and I found it surprising that just straight out telling me to stay determined actually helped me do it.

A game that kept me going
xssilentstormx4 June 2016
I don't believe I have come across a game before that I can not fault it on a single thing. The music suits every setting the player comes across, the characters are unique and have a magnificent design, the gameplay is brilliant, and the humour is the best I've seen in a game for a long time.

This game has the ability to keep the player occupied for days or maybe even weeks, with its multiple endings and choices that actually effect every aspect of the game, be it the surroundings or the way the game ends, or even the way the characters speak to you. By the end of the game you become so attached to the characters (if you don't do the genocide run that is) that you will not want any of them to go away, making you come back to the game regularly to find its hidden secrets, which there are many, and play the game again to be heartbroken of you chose another root.

Overall, Undertale will go down as one of my favourite games of all time ( I know the soundtrack will) and I extremely recommend buying or watching the game.

I don't really care for the fan base and I've always gone for the pacifist run but 6 years later this game still holds up and in my opinion is quite underrated. Give it a go.

It's not about the first playthrough
rodney-6492622 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly my first playthrough was pretty boring but after doing a true pacific run the going onto a genocide run and experiencing undyne and sans fight the music and diolog and the experiences I had in a true Pacific run all added up and made fighting those two probably the most emotional experience I've had in gaming for a long time and seeing as Toby made most of the game by himself just tops it off for me this game is phenomenal

Beyond anything else
stebsis9 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
One thing everyone should know about Undertale and what everyone who's played it will say, do not read anything about it, just go and play it. Anything people say about it, beyond it challenging the video games as we know today and being something far beyond just a nostalgic throwback to games like Earthbound, is basically a spoiler. Toby Fox has created something truly special, something that will definitely go down in history, people will remember this.

You essentially have a choice to play this game without killing anything, killing everything, or just playing normally like you would any RPG of this style, and all are valid paths. Full pacifist run especially is one of the best experiences I've ever had with a game. It was so funny while it took itself seriously, and the ending made me almost cry which I was not expecting. The gameplay mechanics challenge what we expect from any game, best way I would put it, it doesn't follow rules of the game but rules of the world it's based on.

I wouldn't say this is the best game ever made like some people make it out to be, but it is special and something I think everyone should experience and make their own ideas of it, some will love it, some hate it, some just think it's OK. But at least you will get very unique ride with interesting gameplay mechanics like no other.

A good RPG with some moments of greatness
cdalley197914 April 2016
Undertale was an interesting experience for me- both familiar and unlike anything I have ever played. The general aesthetic will be nostalgic for anyone who experienced RPGS in the NES/SNES era, and there are even some direct references to these games (most obviously, the reference to FF VI's famous opera house scene). With it's combination of amateur level graphics and great music, I found it quite reminiscent of Earthbound.

But that is where familiarity ends and originality begins. Without going into specifics, Undertale's approach to combat is nothing like what we have come to expect from earlier RPGs, and the game's focus on violence itself as a theme is what truly sets it apart.

Even with its simple graphics, Undertale managed to create moods that were both silly and ominous by turns, which is what I personally found most memorable and impressive about the game. While the game-play itself was only moderately enjoyable, it is certainly worth any old-school RPG fan's time.

Incredibly Overrated and a Better Version of Earthbound at Best
JimmyWhimmyNutrinSon24 July 2016
So, this game is basically classed as 'the greatest game of all time'. I thought that title belonged to the also overrated The Last of Us. Apparently though, this is the greatest game to ever be made. Ever since 1985 (not the first date of a video game release, but it's when Mario was released and brought gaming to a wider audience) we've waited for the ultimate game, and here it supposedly is. The most hyped up game of all time. Loyal fan base. Not many haters. Countless YouTube videos. So, does it hold up? Is it a brilliant game, about choices and consequences? Does it make you stop and think? Well, no. Not for me anyway. Let's start with the pros. The combat system is inventive and sounds like a good idea. About 80% of the game's songs are great. I love Megalovania. Certain characters are great, for example, Sans and Papyrus. And that's about it. Now let's get into the cons. The humour is STALE. I thought on the internet most people agree that random does not equal funny. Yet the humour in this game isn't funny. Characters randomly yelling the names of food literally had me worrying about the future of humanity. As inventive as it is, the combat system gets boring after a while. I found myself just clicking the 'mercy' button to avoid getting into more boring fights. The story is clichéd. And what do fans LOVE about this game? The choices and consequences. They literally says that this is a thought-provoking game. Erm, no it isn't. It isn't the only game to have choices. Fallout, The Witcher, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls and Until Dawn have choices that have consequences. What makes Undertale so special? I'll tell you what...nothing! I could go on for days. But I won't. TL;DR-It's and over-hyped game that suffers from repetitive combat and stale humour. A 4/10 from me.
