Installed as ABC head of comedy in July, Todd Abbott will start evaluating the development materials of the comedy projects that received support under the $5 million Fresh Start Fund this week – and next week he hopes to greenlight development on several projects that he’s already been evaluating.
That’s the good news for Australian producers and creators – tempered by the fact that the broadcaster’s comedy slate for 2021 is fully committed. So the projects that will advance from now on will premiere in 2022.
Given the ABC’s budget constraints, Abbott tells If: “Everyone has had to tighten their belts. My task is to maintain the comedy department’s output and to keep the Wednesday comedy night thriving – and then I’ll try to work out how to do hostile takeovers of the other nights. Stan Original ‘I Am Woman.’ (Photo credit: Lisa Tomasetti).
Stan has warned the Federal Government that mandating minimum levels of spending on Australian content would undermine the streaming industry’s ability to generate the revenues needed to invest in high-quality Australian productions.
Similarly, Amazon Prime Video opposes regulation that would oblige it to screen a prescribed number of hours of Australian programming on its service, claiming that would reduce the non-Australian content selection or lead to the “inclusion of low quality or low viewership content.”

‘Bluey’ will be among the shows on the ABC to be audio described.
Following long-standing advocacy efforts, the ABC and Sbs will officially launch audio description (Ad) services this week, making their programs more accessible to the more than 450,000 Australians who are blind or vision-impaired.
Ad is an additional verbal commentary of important visual elements in a film or television show, delivered between lines of dialogue. This may include movements, gestures, settings and costumes. It can be turned on and off as required, similar to closed captions.
As flagged last December, the broadcasters will each receive $2 million in Federal Government funding over the 2020-21 financial year to provide the service across an average of 14 hours of weekly programming.
Both broadcasters have been running Ad trials over recent months, and there have been previous trials on the ABC in 2012 and ABC iview in 2015-2016.

Though much of the entertainment industry is currently paralyzed by Coronavirus and the lockdowns imposed to curb its spread, streaming services are now making out like bandits. Netflix and Amazon Prime both have reported record viewing figures, though that isn’t particularly surprising given that they have an almost literally captive audience.
Anyhow, with all eyes on the small screen, anything new and exciting is eagerly hoovered up. And after learning about all of the new and exciting shows and movies hitting Netflix in May, now it’s Amazon Prime’s turn.
Here’s the full release schedule:

‘Rosehaven’s’ Luke McGregor (l) and Celia Pacquola with Rick Kalowski.
In six-and-a-half years as head of comedy at the ABC, Rick Kalowski oversaw a number of series which he believes could have found homes at the commercial free-to-air networks – if they had been offered to them.
“The ABC does an incredible job as the driver of Australian scripted comedy but I truly see no reason why, with the right projects, the love can’t be spread,” he tells If.
Rosehaven would have been a comfortable fit for the Nine or Ten Networks, he thinks, while Frayed would have suited Nine, albeit, he notes, perhaps with some of the fruitier bad language toned down.

Rick Kalowski.
The ABC’s highly respected head of comedy Rick Kalowski today announced his resignation after more than six years in the post.
After commissioning and overseeing the production of 80 titles, spanning pilots, series, digital content and podcasts, the executive tells If he is exhausted and needs a break.
He will stay in place until February to give the ABC ample time to recruit a successor and will pursue new career opportunities in the Australian and global screen industry. He’s having discussions about his next move but nothing is locked in.
Arguably he will step down after one of the ABC’s most distinctive and successful years in comedy, with hits such as Frayed, the fourth season of Utopia, the second of Squinters and the finales of Get Krack!n and The Letdown.
Among other shows produced under his watch, including several commissioned by his predecessor Debbie Lee, were Rosehaven,...

Harriet Walter, who appeared in “The Crown” and “Black Earth Rising,” and Frances O’Connor, who was Golden Globe nominated for “Madame Bovary” and “The Missing,” are set to star in “The End,” a co-production from pay-tv companies Sky in the U.K. and Foxtel in Australia.
The 10-part show is produced by the TV arm of See-Saw, which produced Jane Campion’s Emmy-nominated series “Top of the Lake,” and whose recent movies include Steve McQueen’s heist thriller “Widows.” See-Saw’s past movies include “The King’s Speech,” which won four Oscars, including best picture.
“The End,” described as “thought-provoking, darkly comic and full of heart” by Liz Lewin, executive producer for Sky, is about three generations of a family “with separate but intersecting obsessions – trying to figure out how to die with dignity, live with none and make it count,” according to a statement.

Sometimes the best TV couples aren’t actually couples. They seem to know exactly what each other is thinking at any given moment. They can anticipate exactly what the other person needs to make them happy, calm them down, or give them a much-needed metaphorical kick in the ass. It’s love without romance, friendship without tension. And it’s that precise kind of authentic foundation that Season 1 of SundanceTV’s “Rosehaven” is built on.
Written by and starring Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor, the Australian comedy follows two best friends as they navigate through the day-to-day quirks of the title Tasmanian town. Emma (Pacquola) was recently abandoned by her newlywed husband, left stranded on her honeymoon in Bali. Searching for a way to escape the psychological pitfalls of such an unexpected break up, she escapes to Rosehaven where Daniel (McGregor) has returned to his hometown, trying to help keep...

Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor.
.
Celia Pacquola says buying a whiteboard was the best decision she has ever made as she prepares to shoot Rosehaven — the ABC comedy series she wrote and created with Luke McGregor.
.It was only like a hundred bucks from Officeworks and it flips, it.s the greatest,. she tells If.
The whiteboard in question, despite making the comment in jest, was how Pacquola and fellow comedian McGregor mapped out their new eight-part comedy series, which starts filming on Monday in Geeveston, Tasmania
The series, which also stars McGregor (Utopia, It.s a Date, Luke Warm Sex) and Pacquola (The Beautiful Lie, Utopia, Laid) was cooked up while both were on tour for their various comedy shows.
.Luke McGregor and I knew each other from standup but became really close friends from filming Utopia seasons 1 and 2,. she says..
.There was a lot of in-between-filming. talking shit...
