Nah Yung Suk, one of South Korea’s most successful TV producers, says the content marketplace in his home country has been divided into two distinct eras: “Before Netflix” and “After Netflix.”
On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Nah Yung Suk offers his observations on the rise of Korean popular culture throughout the world. The producer’s latest series reflects the incredible global growth of content imports and exports: “Jinny’s Kitchen,” an unscripted series for Amazon Prime Video, revolves around the opening of Korean street food restaurant in a small town in southeastern Mexico.
The Netflix effect cited by Producer Nah, as he is widely known, began about five years ago when the streaming giant began investing in original Korean-language content. That influx of capital into the spurred more outside coin to flow into Korean producers, and it also encouraged domestic firms such as Cj Enm to step up their ambition.

There was never any doubt that Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish teaming up for a Scottish adventure would be amusing.
Men In Kilts Season 1 Episode 1 dropped us right at the beginning of their country-wide tour as they got into the small Rv and set out on the first leg of their journey.
Starting with food and drink, the duo ate and drank their way around Scotland.
There are not a lot of examples of shows like this to compare with Men In Kilts. But, I have a couple that might do the trick.
Graham: A land that is cut through with locks and rivers and valleys and mountains that altogether weave like some kind of tartan kilt.
Sam: Oh, I knew you were going to go there. That was beautiful.
Graham: Into a beautiful fabric which is called Scotland.
Sam: Scotland!

Exclusive: Fox’s I Can See Your Voice, the mystery singing game show based on a Korean format, has resumed production.
It is Fox’s first major non-scripted series to resume after filming was hit by the Covid-19 production shutdown in March. The show, which is produced by Fox Alternative Entertainment, had filmed one episode before the shutdown.
The broadcaster is employing all health and safety protocols with the LA shoot including social distancing and PPE equipment. Contestants on the show will stand six feet apart and wear a face covering when they are not on camera.
Fox is working closely with local and state officials, including the Health Department, as well as the unions on protocols to make sure that the production environment is as safe as possible.
There will be no audience present during performances but Deadline understands that the network is working out how best to incorporate audiences into the final episodes.

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino were both nominated for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and three directors were honored from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: Barry Sonnenfeld, Bo Welch, and Allan Arkush were all chosen in the Children’s Programs category.

Raunchy British dating format Love Island dominated the global formats business in 2018, culminating in the news that the breakout reality series is being adapted in the U.S. by CBS.
Now that the ITV format is coupled up, U.S. broadcasters are looking elsewhere for their own sexy singleton series as well as international non-scripted formats that can shuffle through the clutter and make a dent in the golden age of drama.
Netflix made an audacious entrance into the formats space this year, causing a stir by picking up the U.S. and global rights to Studio Lambert’s Catfish-meets-Big Brother series The Circle (above) ahead of a number of traditional rivals. Linear networks have been warned that they will need to be quick to secure the rights to foreign shows that pop or else start to look towards territories that they may not have explored before.

World of Dance producers Alex Katz and Mandy Novak have launched No Other Way Productions, a company that will focus on providing post-production and editorial services for networks, streaming services and cable channels.
Housed in a 14,000-square-foot facility in the San Fernando Valley, No Other Way also will have a separate production arm focusing on development and production of original content for scripted, unscripted and digital projects. The facility is housing Season 3 of NBC’s Jennifer Lopez-fronted World of Dance and the upcoming second season of Making It, with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman.
“Mandy and I have both spent over a decade working as producers and are acutely aware of how beneficial it is to provide an all-in-one shop for post-production needs,” Katz said. “We also wanted to create a place for the creative community to develop ideas from inception to final delivery.”

Remote Controlled: ‘Barry’ Star Henry Winkler on Getting Laughs From Playing a ‘Desperate’ Character
Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, Variety’s executive editor of TV, Debra Birnbaum, speaks with Henry Winkler, star of HBO’s “Barry,” about landing the role and the show’s unique ability to combine two storylines into each 30-minute episode.
Winkler, who also juggles starring in NBC’s “Better Late Than Never” and the upcoming fifth season of “Arrested Development,” said after he auditioned for the role of acting teacher Gene Cousineau it “seemed like a millennium” passed before he learned he had been cast.
The long-time actor said, “When I first read the script, I knew that this was something very special.” He added that he still doesn’t know how creators Alec Berg and Bill Hader had a vision to take two separate shows and make them one.

The market for global TV formats, once dominated by the U.K., the U.S. and the Netherlands, is in a state of constant geographic flux.
Turkey and South Korea are now joining Israel and Japan on the list of major purveyors of TV series that can be easily adapted to local tastes.
The growth of global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon has also upped the demand for shows with sturdy formats that can play widely around the world.
In early March, Amazon Prime Video launched its first unscripted original, “The Remix,” an Indian live music reality show, across 200 countries. The format was acquired from Turkey’s Global Agency.
The show, in which 10 teams pairing a DJ and a singer remix existing songs into new cover versions in the hopes of winning a big-money prize and the chance to cut an album, was produced with “probably one of...

Better late than never!
While Gigi Hadid was a teensy-bit late wishing her Bff Taylor Swift a happy birthday on Instagram -- the Reputationsinger turned 28 on Thursday -- she made up for it with a heartfelt message that was super sweet and full of love.
"A belated wish to an incredible friend, a brilliant mind, a huge heart," the 22-year-old model wrote to her friend, on a picture of the two hanging out. "Happiest Birth[week] my T @taylorswift, you know I love you beyond. You make me so proud!"
Aw! You've got to love a little birthday shout out from a good friend.
On Thursday, more of Taylor's besties went online to wish her well on her special day, including Selena Gomez, who wrote, "I’m glad you were born. Last night, NBC’s “Better Late Than Never” and ABC’s “Great Christmas Light Fight” duked it out in different time slots for the (very unofficial) title of top Monday premiere. ABC finished runner-up in the key 18-49 demographic, though CBS was No. 2 among total viewers. NBC was first in ratings with a 1.6 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 8.8 million,...
