Despite the glass-ceiling-smashing success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, gender parity in the global film sector remains a distant goal. Re-Framing the Picture, a recent study from an international and multidisciplinary research team looking at the German, British and Canadian film industries, projects that, at the current rate of progress, true 50-50 equality in key creative positions won’t be reached until 2041 in Germany, 2085 in the U.K., and 2215 (!) in Canada. It’s not an optimistic forecast for the producers, managers, film executives and talents picked by THR as the most influential women in international cinema, but they continue to find new models to produce, finance and distribute movies that amplify diverse voices. More than ever, it’s their efforts that are required if the promise of a more representative and inclusive film industry is ever to be realized.

In addition to starring, Deadwyler is executive producing “The Woman in the Yard” with Collet-Serra, Gabrielle Ebron, Scott Greenberg and James Mora. Jason Blum and Stephanie Allain will serve as producers. Haley Pigman and Jungyoon Kim...

From American high school comedies to Oscar winners, plenty of 2023’s biggest and brightest films have skipped the DVD market in the UK.
(Correction: A previous version of this article claimed Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society couldn’t be found on DVD. It actually can. Don’t worry, we have fired the news-goblin responsible for the error.)
As recently as 2021, the idea that the previous year’s Best Picture Oscar winner wouldn’t get a UK physical media release would have been absurd.
In fact, to find a Best Picture winner that isn’t easily available on a UK disc format, you’d have to head all the way back to 1937. Try as we might to watch The Life Of Emile Zola on the secret DVD player at the top of Big Ben (don’t tell anyone), it looks like no one got round to burning it onto a disk...

Is it just me, or is this a particularly tough year to pick nominees in the buzziest of the 23 categories for the Academy Awards? This will be the 96th time they do the Oscars, and it never gets easier. Even the most experienced awards handicapper has only a slight advantage over the greenest neophyte, because at the end of the day we’re all still just guessing. And you know there will be surprises and snubs aplenty, because how could there not?
With this in mind, here are some things that are guaranteed to happen bright and early (5:30 a.m. Pt/8:30 a.m. Et) tomorrow when the 2024 Oscar nominations are announced:
These will be the 10 Best Picture nominees: “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Zone of Interest” and “Past Lives.” As much as it kills me,...

Bigg Boss 17: Vicky Jain’s Mother Shames & Insults Ankita Lokhande’s Parents On National Television(Photo Credit –Instagram/Reddit)
The internet has got the shock of a lifetime after seeing Bigg Boss 17‘s new promo. This week, family members are supposed to enter the house, and Vicky Jain’s mother displays why marriages and in-laws in India are called walking red flags. As the promo went viral, the internet called out Ankita Lokhande’s toxic sasuraal and begged her to run away from this relationship.
In the promo, Vicky’s mother is seen cracking lame jokes, and then she takes Ankita to a side and tells her, “Jis din tumne Vicky ko laat maara, papa tumhari mummy ko phone kiye aur pooche ki aap bhi apne pati ko aise laat maar thi?” The more disgusting part was Vicky’s mother saying this statement all welled up, believing she had...

“Stunning, thank you,” King even more bluntly said of Origin to When They See Us vets DuVernay and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and wide applause from influential onlookers.

Danielle Brooks is having one of the most significant moments in her career, playing Sofia in “The Color Purple.” It’s a role that she portrayed on Broadway and received her first Tony nomination — but it wasn’t easy for the critically-acclaimed performer to get here.
As the spirited and no-nonsense wife to Harpo (Corey Hawkins), Brooks’ Sofia is positioned as the hopeful and joyous anchor in a narrative that, at times, carries a thematic weight, craving moments of levity. Brooks achieves this with aplomb in sequences like “Hell No,” reminiscent of the impactful “Cell Block Tango” from the best picture-winning musical “Chicago,” which showcased the goods of future supporting actress winner Catherine Zeta-Jones.
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Brooks talks about landing the role once portrayed by Oprah Winfrey in the 1985 version. She also talks about the lessons she learned after not being cast...

Barbie director Greta Gerwig received her first best director Golden Globe nomination Monday, following years past in which she was snubbed for her films Lady Bird and Little Women.
Gerwig was nominated alongside Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Celine Song (Past Lives), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things). Gerwig also received a best original screenplay nomination alongside Noah Baumbach for Barbie. In total, Barbie received nine nominations, including best musical or comedy, best actress for Margot Robbie and best supporting actor for Ryan Gosling.
In 2017, a year which saw Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman and Dee Rees’ Mudbound hit the big screen, Gerwig didn’t receive a nomination for Lady Bird, despite a best picture comedy or musical nomination. Guillermo del Toro, Martin McDonagh, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg received nominations. Natalie Portman, while she was presenting the award to the eventual winner,...

The 33-year-old was shot in his Miracle Mile home on Monday night and died after being transported to a hospital. Latt was the son of Michelle Satter, the founding senior director at the Sundance Institute, and film producer David Latt. His brother, Franklin, is an agent at CAA.
“Our beloved son Michael Latt fell victim to a tragic act of violence this week,” wrote Satter in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Michael devoted his career to supporting artists, championing organizations that raised up artists of color and leveraged storytelling for enduring change. On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer,” two films that have captured the internet’s imagination with their shared July 21 release, have hit box office tracking with early projections expecting solid results for both films.
“Barbie,” as long expected, is projected to take No. 1 that weekend with a $70 million-plus opening. While rival distributors and exhibition sources tell TheWrap that “Barbie” has a lot of upside and could top $80 million, Warner Bros. insiders are more conservative and are predicting a $60 million-$65 million opening, which they say would be seen by the studio as a solid result for a film that has a budget of around $100 million.
Warner Bros. has been licking its wounds at the box office since its merger with Discovery last summer, suffering multiple box office failures like “Don’t Worry Darling,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” and most recently “The Flash,” which suffered the worst second weekend drop ever for a DC film.

Update: President Joe Biden said that Flamin’ Hot was “the first-ever public screening of a film focused on the Hispanic community at the White House,” just before the Disney+/Hulu project was shown before a crowd of several hundred on the South Lawn.
Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and director Eva Longoria walked out together to make brief remarks to the crowd, who were spread out on blankets and munching on chips and, of course, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. The movie is the story of Frito Lay janitor Richard Montañez, who claimed to have invented the snack, although the origin story is in dispute. Montañez rose in the ranks at Frito Lay to become a marketing executive and “played a key role in accelerating the growth of our Flamin’ Hot Brand and other brands particularly through his Hispanic marketing efforts,” according to the company.
