In case you didn’t know, animation directors are also auteurs. According to Yahoo Finance, the global animation market reached more than $400 billion at the end of 2023. That was up from $391 billion one year before. And yet, animated projects are not automatically covered by the WGA, are separate from the DGA, and are consistently overlooked for their filmmaking achievements.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, the directing trio of Sony Animation’s animated box office smash “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” tell Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast that there are some critically needed changes in Hollywood.
“I think it’s worth repeating: animation is a big business for the industry,” says Dos Santos. “We bring a ton to the table; without it, everybody hurts. I also want to add that doing an animated film shouldn’t be a sacrifice for the artist doing it.”

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Many people (this reviewer included) scoffed at the announcement of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Something about the ludicrous title and 23-year hiatus gave the air of a studio in desperation, or one searching for an Oscar contender. How wrong we were. For in spite of the long wait and changes of personnel––Zachary Levi and Thandiwe Newton replace Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha; Sam Fell replaces Nick Park and Peter Lord––this latest adventure is every bit as well-crafted, cleverly written, and stuffed with gallinaceous puns as its predecessor.
We rejoin the flock, like the cast, in much-changed circumstances. For one thing, they have built a small island paradise––it looks more like the Shire than Yorkshire––where they are free to work and roam without the threat of human intervention. There is also a lively new addition to the group: Rocky and Ginger’s chirpy chick Molly,...

Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Several times in recent years, Sony has used the Cannes Film Festival to promote a key upcoming title, despite the movies not officially being involved in the event — see Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation in 2018, 2017’s The Emoji Movie and 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie.

‘Love Again’ Review: Far-Fetched Romance Finds Celine Dion Ready for Her Close-Up … and Her Comeback
We’ve all heard Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” but if you really listen to the lyrics — “Love can touch us one time / And last for a lifetime” — the tragedy-defying hope they describe applies to more than just comely Rose learning to live without her blue-eyed cabin boy. Eighteen years after “Titanic” made her a mega-star, Dion lost her husband and manager, René Angélil, and the singer has made no secret of her struggle to move on since.
An old-school, straight-faced studio romance featuring five new songs from Ms. Dion, writer-director Jim Strouse’s “Love Again” is all about such healing — to the extent that if it were a book instead of a movie, it would be filed in the self-help section. Liberally adapted from the 2016 German film “Texts for You” (“SMS für Dich”), the more-creepy-than-cute plot focuses on a grieving New York children’s book illustrator...

Is the U.K. feeling royal fatigue? With three major royal events landing in the past 24 months — Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, followed by the Platinum Jubilee and Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022 — the coronation of King Charles III on May 6 is dividing the nation.
The coronation arrives in a period of reflection about the monarchy and its place in modern British society, not to mention the optics of staging a ceremony replete with pomp and splendor while ordinary people are grappling with a cost-of-living crisis.
That makes it tricky for U.K. broadcasters to strike a balance between covering a historic event and serving diverse programming. When Prince Philip died, the BBC’s blanket coverage generated so many complaints that the broadcaster had to set up a dedicated hotline to field them.
Perhaps because of the respect Queen Elizabeth commanded, there were fewer grumblings about the coverage of...

Having collected all the gold coins in the Mushroom Kingdom thanks to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is gearing up to release its next animated feature film, "Migration." The studio's first original project since 2016's "Sing", the movie follows a family of ducks as they set forth on their very first vacation. What ensues is a classic cultural clash as these humble country birds cross paths with all manner of unknown critters and baffling obstacles on the way to their sunny, tropical final destination. It's basically one of National Lampoon's "Vacation" comedies, except with animated mallards rather than Clark Griswold and his long-suffering kin.
A silly, light-hearted family flick about talking fowl, "Migration" sounds like it's firmly in the wheelhouse for the studio behind "Despicable Me," "Minions," and particularly "The Secret Life of Pets." Discussing the movie at this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Illumination CEO and founder Chris Meledandri...

When The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder debuted last year on Disney+, it called back to the bygone era of Black TV sitcoms in which its 2001 Disney Channel predecessor shined. One where Black families, culture and people were not only celebrated on the small screens in living rooms across the country, but the central focal point of multiple simultaneously airing (though mostly live-action) series.
Its return on Feb. 3, however, pointed to a stunning reality. While the original series aired in the 2000s alongside a handful of animated kids shows also featuring Black leads, including Filmore!, Static Shock, Tutenstein and Little Bill, there has since been only a handful of animated shows aimed at non-adult audiences that explicitly center Black leads and, more specifically, their families.
“Ralph [Farquhar] and I always thought there were gonna be people coming up beside us, making shows that will continue to display this potpourri of Blackness in animation,...

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral drew a peak of 27 million viewers in the U.K., equating to a 95 audience share.
The vast majority of those watching in the U.K. on Monday – some 18 million – were tuned into the BBC, who began their coverage from 8am before finishing at approximately 5.30pm, reported Broadcast, citing Overnights TV. In second place was ITV with an audience of 4.5 million followed by BBC2, BBC News and Sky News, which came in fifth with 700,000 viewers.
Crucially, the numbers do not include those watching via digital. Sky reported 12.4 million tuned in to Sky News’ coverage of the funeral across all Sky TV channels, the Sky News app and the Sky News website.

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is expected to be one of the most-watched TV events of all time… but it won’t be watched on the U.K.’s Channel 5.
Instead of airing live coverage of the monarch’s historic funeral, the British broadcaster opted to show the 2017 film, “The Emoji Movie”.
The only major broadcaster in the UK to not carry the Queen’s funeral live on Monday, Channel 5 opted for children’s counterprogramming with a lineup that includes “The Emoji Movie”, “Stuart Little”, “Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs”, and “Sing”.

Variety is, as they say, the spice of life, and it’s important to ensure there are always some options available, especially when the only other thing going on is a funeral. That’s why Britain’s Channel 5 is doing its TV-watching constituents a true national service by broadcasting The Emoji Movie and other children’s flicks during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
As expected, there will be wall-to-wall coverage of the Queen’s funeral in England (and elsewhere) today, Sept. 19. Even stations that aren’t necessarily airing the funeral proceedings,...

Call it royally weird counterprogramming: Paramount’s Channel 5 is the sole major British TV service bypassing the otherwise wall-to-wall coverage of the Queen’s funeral proceedings.
The alternative programming? The Emoji Movie, Stuart Little and Ice Age 3.
Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral – A Photo Gallery
With BBC One, BBC Two, ITV and Channel 4 are sticking with either coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral procession or related documentary offerings, Channel 5 earned some widespread social media mocking for going with cartoon programming instead of real-life history in the making.
One popular meme has variations of the royal grandkids Louis, Archie and Lilibet staying home to enjoy cartoons rather than don formalwear and follow the procession of relatives like King Charles III, Camilla, Queen Consort and other members of the Royal family.

Channel 5 has been praised for being the only UK public service broadcaster not to show any Queen-related coverage on Monday 19 September, the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
While BBC One, BBC Two and ITV all aired the funeral live and Channel 4 showed a documentary on the Queen, Channel 5 chose to air animated children’s film The Emoji Movie.
The choice went down well with some viewers. One tweeted that they “don’t understand the criticism of Channel 5 for showing The Emoji Movie during the queen’s funeral”, adding: “What are kids of families who don’t have paid TV/streaming supposed to do otherwise, sit and watch people in suits look overly sad for six hours?”
“Channel 5 deserve a lot of respect for this,” another posted. “Airing an entire day’s worth of kid and family-friendly content to give us a break from wall-to-wall bleakness is a great move.

This means that, should something be on your watchlist, it will vanish until it’s added again.
Netflix doesn’t publicise the titles it will remove – and users will only be alerted to something’s imminent removal if they happen to select the title in question.
But, with help from the team at What’s on Netflix, we’ve compiled the full list – and you can find the compilation of everything being added this month here.

Animayo Gran Canaria, Spain’s foremost Canary Islands-based animation festival, is venturing deep into the metaverse with experts in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) joining leading voices in animation from major studios, including DreamWorks, Walt Disney, Skydance, Sony Pictures and Platige Image.
Some 23 guests will be participating across 14 master classes, three debate panels, three workshops, 10 recruitment sessions and other events at the in-person 17th edition held over May 4-7 in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.
An online edition is slated to launch in October. “This year the debates are a novelty because it’s a must to create a meeting forum in this increasingly polarized society,” said Damian Perea, founder-director of the festival, which also encompasses VFX and video gaming.

Netflix is scheduled to drop a new live-action-computer-animated TV series later this year. The series is based on the 2016 children’s book Ollie’s Odyssey, written by illustrator William Joyce. The show will be directed by Peter Ramsey, who is best known for co-directing the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Here is the plot of the show, according to Collider: “Lost Ollie follows

A new series by Christopher James
Mike White (left) makes himself one of the images of excess and wealth in "Brad's Status," one of four movies he wrote in 2017 (and the only one he also directed).
Do one for them; do one for you. If you can still do projects for yourself, you can keep your soul.
— Martin Scorsese: A Journey
Why not make a lot of movies and make a lot of money?
Mike White’s 2017 was full of many ups and downs. Few people would be able to make four movies in a year and have them all be good. Mike White decided to split the difference, making two personal projects alongside two painfully obvious cash grabs. White is among the credited writers on The Emoji Movie and Pitch Perfect 3. But that wasn't all. He also wrote and directed the comedy Brad’s Status, a passion project.

To many, Joe Pytka’s 1996 hit Space Jam was little more than crossover silliness, a marriage of live-action and animation that did not push the medium’s boundaries anywhere like Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, and a crazy little pop cultural toons-meet-sports-star splurge happily at home in the crazy era that is the ‘90s. But to a great many more of us, this movie means a good deal more. It was a fun slam dunking childhood highlight, that celebrated a star who exceeded the sports he played, and likewise an array of iconic zany cartoon characters who arguably had their final hurrah in this era, before the mid-noughties saw fit to repackage them and later eras doubled down on that. Call it nostalgia or childhood, but for me, Space Jam holds a special joyous place in my heart, not least because it was the first film I fully recall...

The four actors will appear alongside previously announced leads Christopher Backus (Big Little Lies) and Skye P. Marshall (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina).
The film scripted by Bishoff and Sam Harter charts the mysterious psychological destruction of Easton (Backus), who is driven to the edge of sanity, and possible self-harm, by those that love him most—his wife (Marshall) and daughter. Will Easton succumb to their increasingly traumatizing pressure, or will he conquer the dark forces at play in his addled psyche?

Mike White’s return to television is inching closer. The filmmaker is slated to return to HBO via “The White Lotus,” which will premiere on HBO in July.
“The White Lotus” will mark White’s reunion with HBO following “Enlightened,” his two-season comedy series that was canceled by the premium cabler in 2013. Since then, White has written scripts for “Beatriz at Dinner,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Pitch Perfect 3,” and the most recent Disney+ feature “The One and Only Ivan.” He also contributed to the “School of Rock” TV series that ran from 2016 to 2018.
Amid the pandemic, “The White Lotus” was filmed in Hawaii under strict health and safety guidelines.
“It’s beyond exciting to return to HBO with this project and such an incredible cast,” White said in a statement last year. “I am very grateful to everyone who has made it possible for us to bring our little bubble to Hawaii,...

Jordan Peele joked at the 2018 Directors Guild of America Awards that he was retiring from acting after being offered the voice role of the poop emoji in the animated family film “The Emoji Movie.” The wisecrack went viral, but Peele was serious about quitting. During this week’s “Get Out the Vote” virtual event (via THR), Peele doubled down on retirement while in conversation with his “Get Out” supporting actor Bradley Whitford. The event was held as a virtual fundraiser for the Democratic Party of Georgia ahead of the state’s January 5 run-off election.
“I like watching my movies. I can watch the films I direct [but] watching me perform just feels like… a bad kind of masturbatory,” Peele said after Whitford asked if acting was behind him. “It’s masturbation you don’t enjoy. I feel like I got to do so much and it is a great feeling. When...

It has been seven years since Mike White’s critically acclaimed-though-not-commercially-successful series “Enlightened” ended its two-season run, and HBO has announced that White will be returning to the fold as creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the series “The White Lotus.”
The six-episode limited series, set to begin production this month in Hawaii, is described as a social satire set at an exclusive tropical resort. It will follow the exploits of various guests and employees over the span of a week.
The cast will include Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Fred Hechinger, Jake Lacy, Brittany O’Grady, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney and Steve Zahn. It is said that filming will be done under strict health and safety guidelines, one of several productions starting to ramp back up post-coronavirus.
“It’s beyond exciting to return to HBO with this project and such an incredible cast,” said White in a prepared statement.

Will mankind ever learn? Going by the re-entry of a Christmas movie into the Netflix Top 10 most-watched films list before we’ve even had Halloween, I’m thinking no.
2018’s holiday animation The Grinch, which starred Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, is back in the Netflix Top 10, currently sitting as the tenth most-watched movie on the global charts. The film had previously enjoyed a spot on the prestigious list in July (more than once), August and now September. At this point, it feels like an ongoing saga.
If I could put a positive spin on this, I guess viewers are going in the right direction? September is closer to Christmas than August, and August closer than July. At this rate, The Grinch will finally make the Top 10 in a festive month.

Adam Goldberg, star of “God Friended Me” and the upcoming Russell Crowe pic “The Georgetown Project,” is developing a series at Quibi which is loosely based on his own experiences with social media, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project in question is called “@GeneralStories” (working title) and also hails from Eric Siegel and Stampede Ventures. Goldberg is on board to direct.
It follows millennial couple Charlie and Lake who decide to uproot their young family and hectic life in Los Angeles to move in with Lake’s parents and open a general store in a small East Coast town after a downsizing trend they notice on Instagram. Before they know it, they become Instagram stars themselves and what began as a hobby and sales tool to support the store, quickly become an obsession and exposes problems the family didn’t know (or weren’t prepared to admit) they had.

Certain immutable facts of life will never change. Monkeys on the ground, fishes in the sea, birds in the sky, and Hollywood rebooting every damn movie under the sun. Nature in harmony.
The Craft is a 1996 supernatural horror movie and 20 years later it was announced a sequel was officially in production. That sequel has since morphed into a reboot – as per the marketing. Whatever the suitable denomination is – reboot, sequel, remake, rebooquel – today has brought exciting news for those interested in the new Craft film, as production has officially wrapped.
Speaking to TooFab, producer Jason Blum confirmed as such:
“So I can’t report on anything from The Craft except that it’s done shooting. And I’m supposed to see it in about two or three weeks.”
No judgement here. I don’t have anything invested in The Craft, or the new version of it, but I trust this...

As if they hadn’t had enough bad news already.
The much-maligned, though still much-discussed film adaptation of Cats has flopped at the box office on its opening weekend. Universal Pictures would have been hoping the movie met its initial tracking of at least $15 million, but it’s ultimately pulled in just $6.5 million – barely a third of the original projection.
This disappointing opening cements the fact that Cats has become a fully-fledged box office bomb and one of the year’s biggest flops. With a total budget estimated at over $100 million, the film represented a highly risky venture and rampant bad press has likely killed its chances of recouping costs. Currently sitting at just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes (that’s worse than two Transformers sequels), critics have lambasted its terrifying use of CGI – a case of filmmakers being so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

Saturday Am Update: The weekend's new releases are performing mostly as expected, but before we get to them we have to mention WB's Joker, which brought in an estimated $17 million on Friday, to kick off what is looking like a possible $60 million second weekend, signaling a drop that could be less than -40%. A strong performance and a clear sign this film is resonating with audiences.
As for the newcomers, Uar's The Addams Family leading the week's new titles with an estimated $9.6 million on Friday, looking to finish with a $32+ million three-day performance. The film scored a "B+" CinemaScore.
Behind it, Paramount's Gemini Man finished with an estimated $7.5 million Friday, heading toward a $20+ million three-day. The film also received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Further down the list is Lionsgate's Jexi, which managed $1.14 million on Friday and is expected to finish around $3-3.5 million for the weekend.

Last weekend saw Joker deliver the largest October opening weekend of all-time. However, the overall weekend top twelve was still down -15% compared to last year, which saw not only Venom deliver what was, at the time, the largest October opening weekend, but A Star is Born also opened with nearly $43 million, both en route to $200+ million domestic performances. At the same time, 2018 is still trailing last year's overall yearly performance by nearly -6% and while this weekend offers three new wide releases, they aren't likely to turn the tide. Paramount's Gemini Man has already failed to impress critics despite it's technological wizardry and the Lionsgate comedy Jexi is arriving virtually out of nowhere with little-to-no overall awareness. Only Uar's animated feature The Addams Family seems poised for any kind of solid breakout, timed well to play over the next couple of weeks and into Halloween, but it will...
