I'll be Damned, Tattoine!
XweAponX9 December 2015
When I made my predictions of what would happen here, I was both half wrong and half right. Thank God for that, or should I thank the other guy? I knew Lash would be involved as well as the rest of the Inhumans, and I knew we'd see "Will Daniels"(Dillon Casey) again. We get to see more of the Sand-Planet, even got some more history of it, and I was right about Ward's conversion to Hydra True Believer. This episode marks a drastic change for the character, he started out in this series as Mr Clean Cut James Bondian, even Pierce Brosnian Secret Agent; maybe even a little Timothy Daltonion as he was in License to Kill, even when he was acting as a "Good Guy" he had that dark streak. It's gone far beyond that now, the Lid has been blown off.

This is an all-out battle between SHIELD and Hydra, It's also Fitz and Coulsen's revenge against Ward.

But Coulsen and Fitz will find out about that Chinese proverb about revenge and digging two graves.

This chapter changes focus between the Portal Castle in Scotland and the Sand-Planet. Tattoine, as Coulsen calls it. And we now see good reason for Daisy's mother Jiaying's fear of the Portal Rock.

The Portal has been a big problem, has that been solved finally, or has it led to something even worse? We are getting into Gods and Men territory, Inhumans with powers and even more powers.

But now we see exactly why the Motto of Hydra has been "Cut off a Head, it grows back" - This is not just a thing Red Skull would chant, it's what is physically happening.

I've given enough clues, can you piece it together? Seeds for this storyline were planted from even the first episode of Season 2, maybe before. This is the beauty of it, even if something is mentioned in passing in a previous episode, it eventually gets dealt with. We are in the middle of the story now. Beginning, Middle, End. Unfortunately, we have to wait until March of next year to see how it develops.

As far as "things not being explained", AOS has a vested history of revealing how something really happened in a later episode, such as Dr Garner's true escape from Ward's assassination attempt.

Re-watch thoughts

Awesome episode, unpredictable, fun, heartfelt and epic, it's the full package. I love the direction this episodes takes things in, the way things go with Ward was particularly interesting for the actor to show his real talent well into the rest of the season. it also really reflect on Coulson in many ways. this episode in general had the theme of once you go to Maveth you will come back a different person, and that is true for all our characters! I also really appreciated how Fitz and Will had an instant friendship sort of thing, Fitz is just the kindest guy! I adore him! and Kudos to the actor who plays Will, he had a tough character to sell to an audience invested in seeing him snapped out of existence by Thanos, but I did end up liking him a lot. There is some fun action on the earth side too, seeing the inhumans working together was fun, Joey especially is great, and I dug Directer Mack a lot!l, they did make the ending unnecessarily ambiguous, on top of stretching that minute beyond reason, but I don't even care because the final scene was so emotional and heartwarming.

curiously unsatisfying

... and strangely overwritten.

And yes I am painfully aware that in the many millions of internet pages available, this could be the only one that uses the term "overwritten" to describe a script from Team Whedon. But I calls em as I see em and this was a strange episode.

First compare it to the climax of last season when kyle maclachlan was trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter Daisy and people were being turned into dust by alien artifacts. That climax was FUN. A good time was had by all. This one, not so much.

Then you have the constant references in the script to the fact that the wrong "thing" could turn up through the portal. I counted at least 5. You know the audience for SHIELD includes some of the most savvy TV viewers on the planet. These viewers could solve pi in their heads. Did they really need 5 reminders? And the scene where the portal is closing but Phil somehow decides to grab precious seconds to deal with Ward ... did that feel right to you? I am not even going to dignify the closing twist because although it was flagged when ooze came out of the head of the dead alien (a 3 second clip) it still meshes with the rest of the script like chalk and cheese.

I repeat for those patient souls who are still with me and have not been pounding on the NOT USEFUL key: curiously unsatisfying and overwritten.

The good news? The constant digging in the attic by the new owners at Marvel has unearthed Jessica Jones. There may be more treasures yet to come.

Spoiler Alert.. the longest minute in history of television
kurwynd27 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The biggest problem I had with this episode is the minute it takes for the portal to close. Several shootings and a fist fight, time taken to do a crushing press on someones chest, the blob drops from dead aliens mouth, the long walk to the portal that was going to be closed 4 minutes before hand, the blob has time to slither up the hill (best I could tell it was moving at roughly 1 to 2 inches per second with roughly 90 feet to make it to the body) to take over a dead body, get the dead body animated and go through the portal... the writer gods have warped time and teleported aliens to make sure they have a nemesis on earth... from a scifi geek it was really, really lame writing but I understand they have to have drama somewhere are they might as well end the series. Never mind the fact the Coulson decided that he had to solve a personal vendetta by jumping from a jet above a building that just happened to have an open ceiling that led straight to the portal, perfect shot straight through the portal, but don't you get better acoustics if you have an enclosed building, acoustics being a key factor in activating the portal?.. but that was last episode...

Mid-Season Cliffhanger Leaves Lots of Unanswered Questions
reynaldo-r-reina-civ10 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Loose ends that need to be address in the second half of Season 3 according to me (lots of spoilers).

1. SHIELD bombed the Sh!# out of the castle and barely let the team get out of the way, how did "Ward" escape and nobody from SHIELD noticed? 2. How does that alien thing crawl 70 feet to Ward's body and then escapes through the portal before it closes? 3. The portal was already closing and Coulson and Ward were like 100+ feet away. I know he's a main character but escape was impossible. 4. What was the whole deal of introducing Will's character, to put the freeze on the Fitz-Simmons reunion? If Will was dead, why didn't they smell his rotting leg wound? 5. Coulson shot Ward twice and all you see is a small blood patch from two gunshot wounds? I've lost more blood from a nose bleed! 6. The In-humans (good and bad) didn't seem to do a heck of a lot. Maybe because they are novices or the writers didn't really know what to do with them? 7. Coulson goes after Ward on a vendetta? He was never that type of person. He was always cool headed and calculating, more for the greater good type of leader. Uhhh! Anyway these are my gripes, I gave the episode a 6/10. Only because I expect better from the writers/producers.

Not logical and reasonable
toddcha8 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is the closure of the interstellar portal but also opens a new chapter of greater evil. The focus centers on the Coulson's revenge on Pence's death along with the growth of new enhanced people as teammates. It's logical and reasonable to assume that once Coulson catches Ward, he will end him with no hesitation. However, Coulson did not do that, making him selfish and egocentric. Coulson says in the episode 11 " sometimes we only have hard choices" then why did he no kill Ward as soon as he spotted the position of Fitz, giving Ward lots of opportunities to fight back. This is the part I really do get it. Thus whatever wars that award brings after, Coulson needs to take full responsibility.
