The early box office results are in over at Deadline, and oh boy, are they dire or what? As of right now, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga seems poised to win the weekend by a razor’s edge, with it on track for a three-day gross in the range of $27-28 million and about $31 million for the four-day Memorial Day weekend. The Garfield Movie is right behind with $24 million, with Deadline predicting that it could theoretically win the four-day weekend thanks to matinees on Monday. It is set to make $30-32 million over the holiday. We had predicted $40 million for Furiosa and $35 million for Garfield.
It has to be said, the box office take this Memorial Day weekend is an all-out disaster. How bad is it? Whichever movie wins, Furiosa or The Garfield Movie, the winner will have the lowest Memorial Day gross for a movie in...

Lady and gentlemens, the great George Miller has returned with another Wasteland tale! Listen to his words carefully! The prequel to the Aussie post-apocalyptic action spectacle Mad Max: Fury Road has pulled up into theaters. While Fury Road gave enough of a background on Charlize Theron’s character to get us behind her as a protagonist, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is Miller’s attempt to expand on it even further with a larger scope than the series has seen before.
Reviews for Furiosa have been positive, with a certified fresh critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 89% and an audience score of 93%. Our own Chris Bumbray raved in his review, “Miller’s made this a tactile, visceral experience that drives home the point that at seventy-nine, he’s still a master of his craft and making movies directors forty years his junior wouldn’t have the energy or skill to tackle.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is upon us. The spin-off is getting mostly positive reactions, with a bevy of its criticisms coming from the film’s length and pacing. However, the consensus is that 79-year-old George Miller brings back the action and excitement that made Mad Max: Fury Road such a standout spectacle in the sea of frenetic action blockbusters. While praise belongs to Miller and the film’s star, Anya Taylor-Joy, the man of the hour is Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the villain of the movie.
Hemsworth has recently stated that he would get in his own way by improvising too much on Thor: Love and Thunder. However, a new profile in MovieMaker reveals that Hemsworth found it easier to disappear into his character for Furiosa thanks to his unique look — namely the prosthetic nose. He explained, “The nose, the beard, the kind of wig, all the sort of prosthetics and the costume,...

Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But eight years have passed, and while Furiosa drawing raves following the Cannes premiere,...

Australian director George Miller made his first feature film, "Mad Max," in 1979. It was a very low-budget affair costing about $200,000. The film takes place in the near future when the Earth is running low on oil and civilization is just beginning to crumble. "Mad" Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is a road cop tasked with reigning in the chaos. "Mad Max" was decidedly low-fi, but it struck a chord with audiences, ultimately earning almost $100 million worldwide. It remains one of the most profitable movies of all time, comparable only to "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity," and "Deep Throat." Miller would go on to make several sequels to "Mad Max" in 1981, 1985, and 2015. The fifth film in the series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is hitting theaters this month, with a potential sixth entry, "Mad Max: The Wasteland," in the early planning stages.

George Miller is the master of the modern myth. His sprawling "Mad Max" franchise now includes five feature films, novelizations, a comic book series, and two video games — all helping expand a post-apocalyptic Wasteland loaded with lore, characters, and laws different from our own. "Furiosa" serves as a prequel to "Fury Road," but a continuation of the story started in the first "Mad Max" film from 1979. As an audience, we know where Imperator Furiosa's story ends up, but "Furiosa" will show us how she got there.
One of the hardest things about making a prequel is ensuring that there are still stakes to the story at hand, knowing that what comes after has already been established. Sometimes it works, like with "The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds & Snakes," but more often than not, the delivery is more akin to "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," "Dumb and Dumberer," or depending on who you ask,...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road; In fact, director George Miller has said that the movie will “butt up directly into Fury Road,” so what does that mean for Max Rockatansky?
Miller has previously said that Max is “lurking there in the background” of Furiosa, but he provided more detail on this “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo” while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. The director confirms that Max and his car, the Interceptor, will appear in the prequel. “In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller said. “And as we get towards the end of this movie, the chronology… Basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened.” It sounds as though the Mad Max...

In 2016, George Miller came back to his cult franchise, Mad Max, at 70 years old and accomplished a major feat that amazingly put younger action directors in their place. With Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller was able to make an epic-scale, high-budgeted version of his wasteland fairy tale with some of the most eye-popping action sequences seen in some time. The sequel featured a new character played by Charlize Theron and Anya Taylor-Joy now embodies her for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The vehicular carnage crashes into theaters next month and promotion has been revving up with a cover story in the latest issue of Total Film, which features newly seen covers that you can view Here.

Total Film Magazine wants you to witness the badassery of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa for George Miller’s upcoming prequel with new covers for the entertainment publication. On the first Furiosa magazine cover, Taylor-Joy’s road warrior sports the latest in Wasteland fashion: tire tread armor, worn leather straps, and black grease paint covering the top half of her shaven skull. For the alternate cover, Furiosa evokes an unholy Wasteland clergy look with a red cloak, bandaged chest, fire-roasted pants, and a mechanical arm to help crush War Boys’ balls into dust.
Directed by Miller from a screenplay he wrote with Nico Lathouris, Furiosa has the following synopsis: As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by the Immortan Joe.

This article contains mild plot spoilers for George Miller’s Furiosa!
Director George Miller is continuing the Mad Max franchise with the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which is set to reach theatres on May 24th – and with that date just over a month away, the film got some promotion during the Warner Bros. presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller took the stage during the Warner Bros. panel. Miller told the eager CinemaCon crowd that Furiosa takes place over 18 years, whereas Fury Road’s story lasted three days. Miller then quipped that if the apocalypse actually happened, Anya would be the one he’d want to hang out with as she has the rigor and commitment.
Speaking about Hemsworth, Miller said he couldn’t think of anyone to play Dementus, and he’d had the script for a long time.

When director George Miller needed to fill the role of Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road, he turned to actor Hugh Keays-Byrne, who had previously played the villainous Toecutter in the original Mad Max. Sadly, Keays-Byrne passed away in 2020, before Miller could get the prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga into production – so in this movie, which is set to reach theatres on May 24, the role of Immortan Joe is being played by Lachy Hulme. Hulme’s casting in the role was confirmed by Empire, and they also scored a great quote from Hulme about the scope of the film. He told them Furiosa is “David Lean, but with motorbikes instead of camels. When you see 4,000 custom-made motorbikes come over a hill, you shit your pants.“
Hulme pulls double duty in the Furiosa, as he also plays a character called Rizzdale Pell, who is “one of the gang members...

Anybody who loves sci-fi tends to keep at least one eye on the future. That's kind of the whole point, isn't it? Of course, this applies to more than the technologies, cultures, and politics that drive our favorite stories -- it also goes for the stories themselves.
Luckily, sci-fi movie fans have a lot to look forward to in the next few years. Many of Hollywood's upcoming releases will come as no real shock to most, including the small avalanche of "Star Wars" projects on the way or the imminent entries in the nigh-unstoppable MCU. Others will likely be more of a surprise: Films such as Bong Joon-ho's "Mickey 17" and Wes Anderson's "Asteroid City" are bound to make serious waves in the genre, for example.
Meanwhile, a significant number of imminent sci-fi movies are surprising not because they're unexpected -- in fact, as franchise entries, most of...

The Mad Max movie franchise, first created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979 with the initial movie of the same name, became a media sensation. The film series is set in post-apocalyptic Australia and follows the titular character Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Mel Gibson in 3 films) into action-packed adventures.
Later on, Tom Hardy took over as Max for 2015’s fourth installment – “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The series chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia facing social disintegration due to war and depleting resources. Grief-stricken and enraged by the biker gang’s murder of his wife and child, Max embarks on a quest for vengeance.
As Australia rapidly plunges into barbarity with each passing day, he finds himself assisting small pockets of civilization – initially driven by self-interest but eventually out of compassion. Alone in the Wasteland, Max is determined to make that responsible pay for their heinous deed.

There’s a chance Tom Hardy and Zazie Beetz will team up to star in Lazarus, a serial killer drama series in early development at Apple TV+. I said, “there’s a chance” because the project is, technically, “nearing development,” according to Deadline. In other words, the ink still needs to be dry, and deals are still in the works. Lazarus is a co-production between A+E Studios and Range Studios, with plans to sell the package to Apple.
Based on the Joona Linna book series by Lars Kepler (pseudonym for Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril), Lazarus gives off The Silence of the Lambs vibes while telling a dark tale about murder and a search for the truth.

After breaking all expectations with his instant action classic Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller has been revving up his return to the dystopian universe for the last few years. The previously rumored Anya Taylor-Joy is now confirmed to step into Charlize Theron’s shoes, with Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, coming along for the ride as well, Variety reports. Miller will co-write alongside with Nick Lathouris, as well as direct and produce the standalone film, which follows Furiosa before she connects with Max Rockatansky. Every week sees some cool movies being added to Netflix, but this week’s crop was particularly exciting. We got a couple of 90s classics, an all-time great and some big nostalgia hits. Let’s jump right in and look at the highlights.
Looming over everything is the Jurassic Park trilogy, comprising 1993’s Jurassic Park, 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park and 1999’s Jurassic Park III. Obviously, the real cinematic treat there is Spielberg’s original. Now approaching its thirtieth birthday, the blockbuster smash has aged like a fine wine and somehow, its CGI is still impressive even after huge technological strides in the intervening years. If you haven’t seen it before, grab some popcorn, crank up the subwoofer, turn down the lights and enjoy two hours of lawyer-munching, Samuel L. Jackson-eating, goat-destroying perfection.

The last ten years of superhero cinema has seen a lot of rule-breaking. Batman has been hanging out with Gandalf and Velociraptors in the Lego movies, actors and directors are able to work on both DC and Marvel films, and Sony’s Venomverse looks set to merge with the McU. But one rule that’s still respected is that actors only play one live-action superhero at a time and there’s no doubling up. But even that looks like it might be broken now.

Now that Mad Max: Fury Road and the larger franchise may have predicted our future to a much more real extent than we could have ever imagined, George Miller looks to return perhaps sooner than expected. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is killing it at the moment. Not content with somehow making Aquaman‘s Black Manta into a genuinely compelling villain, he also impressed everyone in Jordan Peele’s Us and was one of the best things about HBO’s Watchmen. His star is only set to rise over the coming year, too, with this summer seeing him take a lead role in Candyman and featuring in The Matrix 4.
Of course, it’s well-deserved success. Abdul-Mateen II was jaw-droppingly good in Watchmen and the consistency and quality of his performances have producers and directors across Hollywood sitting up and taking note. Now, according to Collider’s SneiderCut podcast, the actor has a secured a role in an upcoming Mad Max project.
Currently, there are two Mad Max movies on the boil. The first is Mad Max: The Wasteland, which is centered on Max and has been described as “incredibly bleak.

Mad Max is back, baby! The Road Warrior blasted back onto screens in 2015 with Mad Max: Fury Road and gave the long-dormant franchise a shot of nitrous. That film went on to critical acclaim and picked up ten well-deserved Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. Since its release, director George Miller has been hyping up the follow-up to the movie, teasing both spinoff Furiosa and Mad Max: The Wasteland.
But despite the suddenly white-hot appeal of Mad Max, we’ve had to wait a while for production to begin due to legal disputes between Miller and Warner Bros. Now, it appears that legal fog has cleared, as The Geeks Worldwide are reporting that Miller has officially been given the green light to go ahead with Mad Max: The Wasteland. They’re saying that filming will begin in Australia this Fall, but as yet have no casting information for the movie.

Jodie Comer is red hot right now. Besides starring in Killing Eve, she had a role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (even if it was a very small one), can be seen next opposite Ryan Reynolds in this summer’s Free Guy and today, sources close to Wgtc have told us that she’s being considered for the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, to play a young Furiosa. And given that this comes to us from the same sources who said Transformers is being rebooted and Marvel is eyeing Daniel Radcliffe for Moon Knight, both of which we know to be true, we’ve no reason to doubt it.
We don’t have too many details on the project just yet, but it’s hard to believe it’s already been five years since Fury Road was released. A famously difficult shoot, the film powered through it to...

Tom Hardy has had a prolific acting career, and he usually has quite a few projects that he is working on. You may first remember him in his first role from HBO's Band of Brothers where he played John A. Janovec for 2 episodes, from his The Dark Knight Rises role as Bane, Mad Max: Fury Road, or his most recent movie role in The Revenant. This is what is on his plate now:
Star Wars: Episode VIII (post-production) / Stormtrooper - rumored (This interests me highly)Dunkirk / Farrier (post-production)Fonzo / Al Capone (pre-production)Mad Max: The Wasteland / Max Rockatansky (announced)Triple Frontier (pre-production) - rumored
In addition to these films, he is also starring in a FX network series called Taboo that he created with his father, and the synopsis for episode 1 reads:

Tom Hardy confirms he's waiting for the call on Mad Max: The Wasteland...
It took a long time to get 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road to the big screen, the movie that set aside three months after production simply so they could watch the material they’d shot. It was worth it, though: George Miller’s film is arguably the best blockbuster of the past two to three years. But those plans for a fifth movie (and possibly a sixth), Mad Max: The Wasteland, haven’t really advanced. It was to be a prequel to the Mad Max story thus far, and Tom Hardy was linked with reprising his Fury Road role.
Panic not though, assured Hardy. This isn’t a case of missing presumed dead. Chatting to Collider, he said “I’m anxiously waiting to find out”, when quizzed about more Mad Max.

Most of us were thrilled in 2015 when Mad Max: Fury Road was released, giving us a further look into George Miller's post-apocalyptic world where Max Rockatansky, the protagonist played by Tom Hardy, is attempting to help Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, free the harem of sex slaves from the villain Immortan Joe. The critics liked it as well, as the filmed garnered 6 Oscar wins and was nominated for 4 more, including Best Picture.
For awhile now we have wondered about the working title Mad Max: The Wasteland and the future of the franchise with Tom Hardy. Collider's Christina Radish was able to pick his brain as she sat down with Tom Hardy and was able to ask him some questions about his hopefully upcoming role. She starts with his excitement level about the next film of the series, and Hardy replies:

One would think that a cornerstone of modern filmmaking, the post-apocalyptic action film, would remain pure and untouched. Tom Hardy is headed to the Prohibition era for his next role. Deadline reports that the actor has just signed on to portray the infamous American gangster Al Capone in the upcoming drama “Fonzo.”
The film, which is in pre-production, is written and will be directed by Josh Trank. “Fonze” will focus on the final days of Capone’s life when, after eight years of imprisonment, dementia begins to rot his mind and his memories of his violent and brutal origins begin to haunt him.

Since “Mad Max: Fury Road” was released last year and garnered widespread critical acclaim, there has been talk about a black-and-white edition of the film that director George Miller describes as the best version of the film. Winner of six Oscars, feted with no shortage of acclaim, and earning some pretty strong box office as well, it’s been a bit surprising how silent Warner Bros. has been about a follow-up to “Mad Max: Fury Road.” George Miller made it clear all last year he’s got material ready to go that was borne from creating backstories for the characters in ‘Fury Road.’

It should be pretty apparent by now that Charlize Theron’s Furiosa is not returning for the next “Mad Max” movie (which was easily my biggest lament at the end of ‘Fury Road’). Max and Furiosa part ways and it's clear at the conclusion that any sequel will follow the Road Warrior, not the Imperator — plus, director George Miller has said as much already, and Theron has suggested she won't go through that kind of hell-ish shoot again (nor is she actually signed on for any more sequels). Read More: George Miller Says 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Sequel Story Doesn't Involve Furiosa At one point, Miller said the sequel would be called “Mad Max: The Wasteland,” and then he rolled back on that idea. George Miller is well aware that pretty much every quote he has offered about a follow-up to "Mad Max: Fury Road" in interviews has been picked up and analyzed to death by various media outlets. As a result, he's now being more cautious about what he says regarding a fifth film in the "Mad Max" series.
His newest interview with Deadline shoots down the "Mad Max: The Wasteland" title rumors to some extent, and clears up where things are now:
"The more I speculate about what's happening, the more I try to avoid spoilers this far out, and also I find myself talking around in circles. So the best thing I can say is that we're definitely in discussion about making more of these, but the timing of it, I'm really not sure. Probably won't be called Wasteland. I can say that. It was just the working title we gave it.

Cast one eye over the summer blockbuster window and you’ll discover one success story after another, with Furious 7, Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron all breaking box office records in one way or the other. And though it may not have gone down as a financial success in Warner’s eyes, Mad Max: Fury Road sticks out like a flame-spouting electric guitar against the Australian desert as one of the more memorable releases of 2015, which has naturally ignited talk of a direct sequel.
From Tom Hardy revealing that he’s locked in for at least three more installments as the lone wolf Max Rockatansky to the studio labelling the second installment as Mad Max: The Wasteland, there’s been plenty for fans to dissect since Miller’s blockbuster took the generic parameters of the action genre and blew them to kingdom come back in May of this year.

Since launching at Cannes this spring, to rhapsodic reviews and, yes, Oscar buzz, the question about "Mad Max: Fury Road" on nearly every mind has been, "When do we get another one?" Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa, chief scene-stealer in Mad Max: Fury Road, may not be appearing at all in the proposed sequel.
Director George Miller revealed to Digital Spy that the badass heroine only features briefly in the two Fury Road follow-ups he has planned.
"I'm not sure, is the answer," Miller said when asked about Theron's potential return. "She's not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there's an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can't really say more than that because it's still in progress."
The Australian filmmaker also said that the previously-mentioned sequel name, Mad Max: The Wasteland, may not be the film's final title.

Despite a refreshingly unconventional approach to the summer blockbuster archetype and a flame-spouting guitarist in the form of the Doof Warrior, Mad Max: Fury Road failed to reach the dizzying heights of other tentpole films released during the summer months – namely Age of Ultron, Pixar’s Inside Out and Jurassic World. Even still, this hasn’t dampened our interest to return to the Wasteland, nor has it stopped director George Miller from pushing on with plans for sequels.

It's no surprise that a sequel to this summer's most critically-acclaimed blockbuster, Mad Max: Fury Road, is on its way. But it turns out director George Miller has two scripts to choose from.
Speaking to Top Gear, Miller explained that because of Fury Road's difficult journey to the big screen, there'd been a lot of time to get some writing done, resulting in these two spare scripts.
"This film [Fury Road] was green lit three times and fell over three times over a decade," Miller said.
"We went to shoot with Mel Gibson back in 2001, but then 9/11 happened, and the American dollar collapsed against the Australian dollar close to 30%, so we lost that amount of budget overnight."
