After Season 5 ended, FX announced that the show would be going on an "indefinite hiatus" because Louis CK had some other projects he wanted to devote time and energy to. Much like HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" has not been canceled but has not filmed since 2011 and will not film again unless Larry David wants to make another season, FX said that they will immediately put "Louie" on the schedule when (or if) Louis CK wants to return for a 6th season.
In a panel discussion of the show that also featured Pamela Adlon, Louis CK related a story of how he asked for 5 extra episodes when Season 5's filming was halfway finished. CK had been smoking marijuana and wrote pages of what he thought was brilliant material, and immediately called up FX to ask for time and money to bring the season up to 13 episodes. The network bluntly told him that it was too late to re-allocate any funds. The next day, CK said that he re-read all of his "brilliant" material and found it to be so nonsensical and disjointed that he ended up using none of it to finish Season 5.
There are no opening credits.
After Louis CK admitted that sexual harassment allegations against him were accurate, FX cancelled his overall deal with the network, and "Louie" is considered to be cancelled even though there had been no plans to resume production since the 5th season was filmed in 2014. In addition, FX no longer airs the episodes on late-nights during weekends the way it does with many of its other original half-hour shows.
