On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

After the adaptation of Stephen King's detective story Mr. Mercedes, which was praised by both fans and critics, another adaptation of the book from the Bill Hodges series has been released. The fact that television producers have begun to turn to the author's rather unusual works is a trend to be excited about. Both Mr. Mercedes and the 2020 series The Outsider are primarily detective stories, not horror.
King's works in this genre haven't yet become overgrown with self-repeats – that's why watching these adaptations is much more fascinating than seeing how poor people get lost in the tall grass or pets rising from the dead.
What is The Outsider About?
According to the plot of The Outsider, the body of a brutally murdered schoolboy is found in a small town. All evidence points to coach Terry Maitland, a seemingly respectable man who bears little resemblance to a brutal killer.

Stephen King loves Holly Gibney. First introduced in King's crime novel "Mr. Mercedes," book one of the Bill Hodges trilogy, she's returned in his work time and time again. She came back in the two other books in the trilogy: "Finders Keepers" and "End of Watch." Then she appeared in the novel "The Outsider" and the short story "If It Bleeds." Finally, she got a book of her own with "Holly," the newest novel King published (it came out in 2023; the ever-prolific King probably wrote four more novels in the time it will take me to finish this sentence).
Holly has been brought to the small screen twice already. She appeared in the "Mr. Mercedes" TV series, where she was played by Justine Lupe. Then she popped up again in the TV adaptation of "The Outsider," where Cynthia Erivo played the character. Now, Holly is headed to the small screen again,...

Stephen King is readying himself for a flood of hate when his next book, Holly, drops on Sept. 5. “I think that a lot of people are not going to like it,” he says. “I think that a lot of people — particularly people on the other side of the Covid issue and the Trump issue — are going to give it one-star reviews on Amazon. Deadline Strike Talk hits a dubious 12th week milestone today, with the business shut down and actors picketing alongside the writers. Host Billy Ray has put together another strong group of guests who put the plight of working actors in relatable and understandable terms. Joining are four actors, three of whom are on the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. Sarah Ramos’ credits include The Bear, Winning Time, and Parenthood; Shaan Sharma’s credits include The Chosen and Mr. Mercedes; Charles Bodin’s credits include Good Trouble, Halt and Catch Fire, and The Last Tycoon; and Andrew Leeds’s credits include Barry, The Patient, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
What emerges from their talk is compelling evidence that the idea of a middle class for actors has been wiped away, and they cite one member who had decent speaking parts in 13 things, and still did not make the $26,000 or so needed to qualify for healthcare.

Starz and Lionsgate have suspended producer Ian Woolf from the drama series “Bmf” following an alleged altercation with two striking Writers Guild of America writers in Atlanta on Thursday.
According to a series of tweets posted by WGA member Brian Egeston and strike captain Gabriel Alejandro Garza, the pair were on a public sidewalk, not impeding traffic, when Woolf pointed an SUV he was driving toward Egeston “as though it were a weapon and slammed the breaks within six feet of writers.”
Garza said that Woolf looked directly at him as he “hit the accelerator one more time, followed by the brakes, and skid even closer to us.” According to the pair, Woolf said that he was trying to scare them. Garza noted that they have a recording of Woolf’s explanation.

A producer on the Starz/Lionsgate drama Bmf has been suspended from the 50 Cent-produced series after clashing with striking writers outside the show’s Atlanta set.
“We take acts of intimidation and threats of violence seriously and investigate them thoroughly. As we continue to investigate, we have sent home the individual involved,” a Lionsgate rep said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
The alleged incident occurred Thursday afternoon in Georgia, where Bmf (as in Black Mafia Family) was in production on the third season of the series based on the lives of two brothers who founded an influential crime organization in 1980s Detroit. Writer Brian Egeston, who documented the alleged incident on Twitter, claims Bmf’s Ian Woolf sped toward him and other writers in his SUV and stopped short in what he dubbed as an “intimidation” tactic.

The acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Dennis Lehane has often tackled stories about complicated men and the criminal underworld, but up to a point. For instance, he doesn’t like serial killers or stories about prison. So when he first started reading James Keene’s true-crime memoir In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, the book didn’t seem like something he’d want to adapt. After all, it focuses on Keene’s stint in a federal prison, where he tried to get a suspected serial killer named Larry Hall to confess to his crimes.
“It wasn’t anything that I really warmed to until the very end when I thought, this is an interesting way into the male gaze,” Lehane tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our “Meet the Experts” showrunners panel.

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

On Sept. 8, 2017, New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures released It: Chapter One, the first of two movies based on the classic 1986 novel by Stephen King and a film destined to go down in cinema history as the highest grossing horror movie of all time.
Opening to a record-shattering 124 million and eventually earning 701 million worldwide (against a measly budget of 40 million or so), It: Chapter One was also a fantastic movie. It captured both the unimaginable terror of the entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (helped by a genuinely unnerving performance by Bill Skarsgard) and the emotional, coming-of-age story of the seven kids known as the Losers Club, who bond together to battle the malignancy under their town.
It: Chapter One also proved that a mainstream, high-quality, studio-backed picture could still be made from King’s work, after a nearly 20-year period in which many adaptations either did moderately well...

Like so much of Dennis Lehane’s writing, “Black Bird” is a stealthy piece of storytelling — at first appearing like a simple crow, nested comfortably on the power line next to a dozen others like it, before spreading its wings and revealing a plumage streaked with shades of gray. For decades now, the novelist and screenwriter has married shrewd sociological observations with popular genre fare. His Kenzie/Gennaro series, peaking with “Gone Baby Gone” and its impossible question of how to best care for at-risk children, is stacked with similar quandaries rooted in morality, responsibility, and the public good. This perspective felt right at home on “The Wire,” which Lehane joined in Seasons 3 and 4, before “Boardwalk Empire,” “Mr. Mercedes,” and “The Outsider,” among other uncredited TV jobs, film scripts, and a steady output of new books.
“Black Bird,” his first series as showrunner and developer, alludes to its complementary components from the very start.

This article contains spoilers for the From season 1 finale.
Last night, the Epix suspense horror series From starring Harold Perrineau ended its first season with multiple cliffhangers that separated the main characters, and opened up a whole lot of questions about a town cut off from the rest of the world and surrounded by nocturnal vampire-esque creatures. Titled “Oh, the Places We’ll Go,” the tenth episode was reminiscent of a Lost-style finale that expands the web of intrigue (somewhat literally considering those massive spider webs that look like something woven by Tolkien’s Shelob).
And the comparisons to Lost are not without merit. From was created, and executive produced by John Griffin, Jack Bender, and by showrunner Jeff Pinkner, with Anthony and Joe Russo of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as producers.
In the finale, Perrineau’s Sheriff Boyd Stevens continues his quest to go further into the forest beyond the trapped town.
