Poor petty coal miner and burner Peter Munk has no hope of bidding for the hand of his beloved Lisabeth from a wealthy family, so he desperately turns to the mythical powers in the Black Forest. Finding the wise spirit 'glass man', he is entitled to three wishes, but ignores the advice to ask for good sense. Having opted for cash, Peter wins enough to buy and run the glass blowing manufacture, impressing his father in law Ezechiel, but ends up losing everything gambling and risking debtor prison. So Peter turns to the dark 'Hollander Michael', who offers unlimited funds in exchange for his heart, which is exchanged with a rock in the black magic cave. He turns grim and scrooge, chasing his mother and ultimately beating his beloved to death. He returns in abject despair to the glass spirit and challenges the Hollander craftily.
