Over the weekend we reported about The Fall Guy hitting VOD services a mere 17 days after its opening weekend. While we know that is primarily a result of Universal being allowed to do so in an agreement that lets them pull a movie’s theatrical run if it underperforms, it did bring up another point on the opposite side. What happens when a movie does insanely well at the box office, with critics and on the awards circuit but still doesn’t have a home video or streaming release? That’s precisely the case with Godzilla Minus One, which pulled in $115.8 million worldwide on a $10-12 million budget.
Despite those box office numbers, Godzilla Minus One is nowhere to be legitimately found in North America. Keep in mind also that the film made its North American debut December 1st — that’s almost half a year ago!

Toho’s 34th Godzilla film is reportedly eyeing a new director after Takashi Yamazaki-directed film Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. According to sources, the director of the Bleach live-action movie, Shinsuke Sato, will be Toho’s new choice of director.
It is also reported that the film will not be a sequel to the earlier film and will be a standalone work. Fans are not exactly thrilled to hear this news, as they believe that Toho is wasting a great opportunity.

What's in a roar? Well, if it belongs to a ginormous prehistoric reptilian monster like Godzilla, it matters as much as what the creature represents or makes us feel. Godzilla's roar has evolved over the years — the original sound resembled a shrill "Skreeeonk!" as described in Dark Horse's "Godzilla" comics, and went on to alternate between deep, guttural sounds and high-pitched screeches that feel otherworldly. Akira Ifukube, who created the score for Ishirō Honda's "Godzilla", was the one who crafted the monster's distinctive disyllabic roar. This was not an easy task to accomplish, especially in 1954, when most creature sounds were created organically with minimal reliance on technological tweaks. How did Ifukube and Honda decide on a sound that would go on to constitute the heart and soul of such a beloved character?
For starters, Ifukube did not believe that Godzilla should roar at all, as the creature's reptilian...

Godzilla (Gojira), the beloved fictional movie monster, is a favorite among viewers. Since 1954, Godzilla has been wreaking havoc on screens, terrifying and delighting audiences. The genesis of this creature can be traced back to something profoundly serious and devastating: thermonuclear weapons and the tangible threats they pose to humanity.
The first instalment in the series was “Godzilla” (1954), directed by Ishirō Honda and produced by Toho Studios. Going beyond a simple horror/monster movie, it drew inspiration from a real-life event involving the ‘Lucky Dragon No. 5' (Daigo Fukuryū Maru) tuna fishing boat. This vessel was navigating in waters near the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, not far from the area where the American military had chosen to conduct a test of a hydrogen bomb (a thermonuclear device). Characters are more often associated with their iconographies, which provide them with an enduring legacy through the ages. When readers think of Sherlock Holmes, the pipe and the iconic hat immediately come to mind; the bat insignia is a cue to Gotham’s caped crusader; and similarly, the mention of Godzilla always evokes the mental image of the atomic monster unleashing its fierce, nuclear-powered breath—akin to the fire-breathing dragons of ancient mythology.
Atomic Breath has been an integral part of the big G’s identity since the character’s first appearance and has been showcased in almost all of Toho Studio’s 30+ cinematic ventures involving Godzilla. Irrespective of the tone and treatment of the movie, whether it’s the campy fun of the Showa era or the grounded, dark approach of the present Reiwa era, makers have always made sure that each version of Godzilla asserts their individuality through their respective atomic breath.

Is there any movie opinion more wrong-headed than saying that Godzilla isn’t my Godzilla? Sure, you might prefer the serious allegorical Godzilla from the 1954 movie or, more recently, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. Or you might like the goofier Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Gigan and the newest film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Heck, it is absolutely okay if the American Iguana monster Zilla is your jam.
The only thing that’s unacceptable, that’s absolutely dumb and worthless, is saying that a particular movie doesn’t understand Godzilla. A movie may botch everything else around the giant lizard monster, as happens often in the United States, but the lizard always works. Not only would every movie be improved by the inclusion of a giant fire-breathing monster, but the King of the Monsters fits in a wide range of movies, making him (or her!) pop culture’s most versatile star.

Fantasy can cross over into several genres where you wouldn’t expect it to be found. Horror is one, of course; I dare you to watch Pan’s Labyrinth and not tell me it’s a horrific fantasy. But another is Science Fiction. Sci-Fi and Fantasy go hand in claw, and no more so than when it comes to Godzilla and his family of monsters.
In this edition of Fantasizing About Fantasy Films, we’re doing something a little different. We’re going with the new modern classic Godzilla Minus One. The return of the King of the Monsters from his home country of Japan and an origin story never previously witnessed. Prepare to be amazed as we see a Godzilla story told in a way that will surprise you, and which became one of the biggest hits of 2023 as we fly toward the monster in Godzilla Minus One.

The idea of humans transforming into monsters to address injustice isn’t new; manga like Attack on Titan and Parasyte have already included it. Still, Kaiju No.8 returns to the notion that if a human becomes a kaiju, it must be among the strongest and the greatest of two species.
While some may dismiss Kaiju No.8 as a mere imitation of Attack On Titan, it actually presents the narrative with a finesse that arguably surpasses its predecessor.
Echoing the legendary Godzilla series, Kaiju No.8 mirrors Attack On Titan in several ways, particularly in how its central characters, Kafka Hibino, and Eren Yeager, possess the remarkable ability to morph into the very creatures that threaten their worlds.
The Parralel of Kafka and Eren Yeager
Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan
Unlike Eren Yeager, who was praised for his mastery of omnidirectional mobility gear against Titans, Kafka is essentially at a disadvantage with his humanity.

It’s been nearly 70 years since Godzilla first step foot on the silver screen with Ishiro Honda’s 1954 opus, Gojira. What started as an allegory about the horrors of the atomic bomb and war has since been reimagined myriad times to cover everything from the awesome forces of nature to geopolitical alliances, the absurdities of consumerism to mankind’s inability to curb pollution. Whether Godzilla is a tragic monster, a defender of earth, or children’s role model, there’s no denying the appeal the Big G has to audiences.

Last night’s Academy Awards was a big night for a lot of people. Godzilla is the most famous monster in movie history, so coming up with a transcendent design in the modern day is no easy feat. The original 1954 film used special effects that were groundbreaking at the time: a man in a massive suit knocking over miniature sets. The scaly monster in that picture changed filmmaking for good, and contemporary movies are still trying to conjure up that same level of awe.
The 2010s saw a resurgence of Godzilla and his monster kin, as the American MonsterVerse series revived the classic blockbuster form. In Japan, the Reiwa era ushered in modern classics like "Shin Godzilla" and "Godzilla: Minus One." Though these films may differ in story and style, they all build upon their predecessors, creating bigger, stronger, and more technically advanced creatures than ever before.

"Godzilla Minus One" is not only one of the best movies of 2023, but also one of the best movies in the entire 70-year history of the "Godzilla" franchise. This is a movie that makes Godzilla a formidable force of nature, a monster to be terrified of and whose atomic breath now has a striking resemblance to nuclear explosions — bringing the King of Monsters back to his roots as an allegory for nuclear power.
Much like "Shin Godzilla," part of the appeal is that "Godzilla Minus One" draws from different sources of inspirations than just other "Godzilla" movies (though this one is also influenced by the first film in the franchise). Much like "Shin Godzilla," part of the appeal is that "Godzilla Minus One" draws from different sources of inspirations than just other "Godzilla" movies (though this one is also influenced by the first film in the franchise). Never underestimate the power of toys and merchandising. Toys helped turn "Star Wars" into an empire — and got Harrison Ford mad. They also literally saved "Mobile Suit Gundam" from cancelation and turned that anime into one of the biggest Japanese media institutions, yet nearly ruined "Cowboy Bebop." Surprisingly, toys even helped bring Hideaki Anno's subversive and weird vision of "Shin Godzilla" to life.
"Shin Godzilla" is a fascinating experiment in how to reinvent a popular franchise, as well as one of the best movies starring Godzilla ever made. Anno, who also wrote and directed "Neon Genesis Evangelion," delivered a different take on the Toho icon that is more political, more satirical, and updates the nuclear analogies of the original 1954 "Godzilla" movie to modern times by drawing inspiration from the Japanese government's reaction to the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. It additionally helped usher in a new golden age for the King...

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!
Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

Hideaki Anno is one of the most brilliant voices in animation -- a writer, director, and animator responsible for masterpieces such as the hugely influential "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and its many endings), but also the anime that did the same twist as Pixar's "Lightyear" much better and decades earlier. Anno additionally belongs to the prestigious club of animators who successfully made the jump to directing live-action projects alongside Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, and more. Anno not only brought Go Nagai's "Cutie Honey" to live-action successfully, but he also reinvented iconic franchises like "Kamen Rider" and "Godzilla."
The last one is important because Anno's "Shin Godzilla" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla stories. "Shin Godzilla" is a more satirical take on the King of the Monsters and a poignant movie inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, as well as the response...

The first trailer for upcoming MonsterVerse movie "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" featured a baby Kong and a new giant ape villain called Skar King, but both were overshadowed by the star of the show: Pink Godzilla.
Though Godzilla is most commonly associated with his classic white-blue atomic breath, director Adam Wingard isn't the first filmmaker to experiment with the color spectrum when it comes to Godzilla's most lethal power. There have been a dozen different continuities featuring the giant lizard, who has been reinvented and redesigned both drastically and subtly over the years.
The pink-glowing version of Godzilla is the same one that was featured in Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' "MonsterVerse" movies -- starting with "Godzilla" in 2014 and most recently appearing in the spin-off series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters." Even though "Godzilla Minus One" has ended its record-breaking theatrical run in North America, the film's legacy will undoubtedly endure well beyond the silver screen. To that end, the folks at Mondo have announced the release of a brand new poster based on director Takashi Yamazaki's widely acclaimed monster movie, and it's very much deserving of some wall space for fans of the King of the Monsters.
The poster was cooked up by illustrator Tony Stella and captures this new, terrifying incarnation of Godzilla in all of his powerful, destructive glory. The image was inspired by the film's epic attack in Japan when the monster lays waste to the country just after it had begun picking up the pieces in the aftermath of World War II. Stella uses a hand-painted style that adds a lot of character to the poster while staying very true to what Yamazaki cooked up.

Nearly two months into its box office run, "Godzilla Minus One" continues to make noise. Toho's surprise hit entry in the long-running franchise is riding high, having recently secured a historic Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects, with the black and white "Minus Color" edition of the film hitting theaters over the weekend. The combination of events was enough to give the film a healthy boost on what figures to be its final weekend in theaters in the U.S. But it's going out with a bang and some impressive milestones under its belt.
Takashi Yamazaki's widely-acclaimed "Godzilla" film pulled in $2.7 million in its most recent weekend (in large part thanks to the black and white version), putting it back in the top 10 on the charts, per The Numbers. The director of Godzilla Minus One has suggested that the next giant monster movie from Toho will be another standalone entry rather than a sequel.
If you’re a fan of Godzilla Minus One, Toho’s latest movie to feature the King of the Monsters, then you aren’t alone. The film – which released right at the end of last year – has already amassed over $100m at the global box office, which isn’t bad at all considering its $15m production budget. It’s also bagged an Oscar nomination for Best Achievement in Visual Effects, and that’s without mentioning the rapturous response from audiences around the world.
The film has eclipsed the success of its predecessor, 2016’s Shin Godzilla, but it doesn’t automatically mean we’ll be seeing a direct sequel. In fact, director, writer, and visual effects lead Takashi Yamazaki has offered an update (via Comicbook) which...

The taxonomy of Godzilla movies has been carefully considered and deliberately arranged for many years, cordoning off various "eras" of Godzilla movies — eras named after Japanese emperors — into their own, neatly distinguishable chronologies. 1954's "Gojira" through 1975's "Terror of Mechagodzilla" constitute the Showa era, encompassing 15 films. The series was rebooted in 1984 with "Return of Godzilla," and the second era, the Heisei era, ran through "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995. Roland Emmerich's 1998 English-language "Godzilla" is an oddity in that it exists outside of an era or a continuity. 1999 through 2004 — that is: "Godzilla 2000" through "Godzilla: Final Wars" — constitutes the Millennium era, although the continuity of one of the films in that era is questionable.
2016's "Shin Godzilla," like Emmerich's film, also exists in its own continuity. A trilogy of animated Godzilla films, also in its own universe, was released in 2017 and 2018. And, of course, the American Monsterverse series has been humming...

We're in the midst of a Godzilla renaissance. The big guy stole the show in 2023 with the critically acclaimed "Godzilla: Minus One," then appeared on the Apple+ TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and battles King Kong once more on the big screen in Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." We haven't even mentioned Netflix's "Godzilla" animated series or the slew of unique takes on the character released over the last decade, including the terrifying "Shin Godzilla." It's a great time to be a Gojira fan!
Of course, Godzilla enjoys the moniker "King of the Monsters" and with good reason: he's hard to stop. Since his debut in 1954, our hulking, spiky-tailed, nuclear pal has bought the farm only four times and typically wins his epic confrontations with other Kaiju. That's not to say he doesn't lose a fight, but more often than not, Godzilla runs slowly walks home with the trophy,...

Just as the original "Godzilla" is getting ready to celebrate its 70th birthday, the character is celebrating a major milestone thanks to his latest major motion picture. After another solid weekend at the box office, the widely-acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One" now holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing Japanese-language movie in the franchise's history. Given that there will be 40 movies in the series after "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" arrives later this year, that's hugely impressive.
Director Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" earned $2.2 million over the New Year's holiday weekend, bringing its domestic total to $46.2 million, per Box Office Mojo. More importantly, the film has also earned $35.4 million internationally thus far, bringing its grand total to $81.6 million worldwide. That now puts it above 2016's "Shin Godzilla" ($78 million worldwide) as the biggest Japanese-produced entry in the franchise. The biggest overall remains 2014's "Godzilla" ($529 million worldwide). Godzilla Minus One has surpassed 2016’s Shin Godzilla at the global box office, making it the biggest entry in Toho’s blockbuster series of films.
What great news to start the year with. Godzilla Minus One (which we were big fans of) is now the biggest Godzilla film of all time.
As Dark Horizons reports, Godzilla Minus One’s impressive $78 million haul at the global box office puts it ahead of Shin Godzilla, which made $76 million back in 2016. Godzilla Minus One had a reported budget of only $15 million, making the achievement even more impressive.
In the US, Godzilla Minus One holds the most successful opening of any Japanese film ever. It also overtook Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth as the sixth highest grossing foreign film ever in the country. We can’t imagine Guillermo is too upset though – he seems to love the film.

It had been a quiet couple of weeks at the box office until "Wonka" arrived to liven things up with a bigger-than-expected debut. Luckily, "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" has had long legs, or theaters would truly be in rough shape, as Disney's "Wish" flopped pretty hard and "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" didn't hold nearly as well as "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" did. Thankfully, a pair of imports from Japan emerged as unexpected saviors.

Director Takashi Yamazaki sets his destroyer of worlds against a postwar Japan still recovering from the effects of the A-bomb with the little people left to work out how to save themselves
There are bazillions of Godzilla films out there, both from Japan and the US and this latest contribution to the franchise is one of the very best. Box Office: ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Rises to No. 1 in North America With Projected $10 Million Debut
Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” looks to soar atop domestic charts this weekend after earning about $5.4 million across Friday and various preview screenings. Playing in 2,205 theaters, the GKids release has the benefit of Imax and other premium large format auditoriums to boost those numbers.
It’s another modest win for theaters in a marketplace that may not ever recover to pre-covid levels. “The Boy and the Heron” is the latest in a series of more successful targeted event releases with smaller marketing spends. See last weekend’s openings of “Godzilla Minus One,” staying in third place for its sophomore outing, or even “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” which topped charts in its debut. Then there’s previous animated features from established anime like last year’s “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” ($38 million domestic) or the first “Demon Slayer” ($49 million domestic). Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli generally don’t dabble in IP; but,...

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One will see an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla.

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and Heron” (which won the NYFCC Best Animated Feature award) marks the first Studio Ghibli film to get an IMAX release. It opens December 8 for a one-week run on approximately 200 North American screens through GKids, after premiering on IMAX in Japan on July 14 (under the title “How Do You Live?”) with the highest opening weekend gross for an anime feature. The IMAX screenings will provide both the Japanese-language version and the English dub.
However, Miyazaki needed convincing to release his most personal film in IMAX. But the large-format giant spent years developing a strategy to woo the legendary anime director and Studio Ghibli co-founder.
“IMAX has been consistently looking to support telling big stories from international filmmakers all around the world, and that includes anime,” Christopher Tillman, VP of international development and distribution, told IndieWire. “We’ve done previous releases with Makoto Shinkai, including ‘Suzume,...

Godzilla has been an absolute staple of cinema dating back to the '50s, which is something very few characters of any kind can claim. From the original 1954 classic that served as an allegory for the terrors of the atomic bomb to blockbuster-sized, silly chaos in films like 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong," there has been much to enjoy over these many decades. But fans of the famous Kaiju are currently in the midst of arguably the single greatest moment we've ever had regarding this franchise. Hard as it may be to believe, it's difficult to deny.
Currently, director Takashi Yamazaki's wildly acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One" is in theaters and had the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a live-action Japanese movie. That's because this is being hailed as one of the greatest "Godzilla" movies ever made, right up there with the original and 2016's "Shin Godzilla." It's that good.

The weekend may belong to Beyoncé, but the King of the Monsters made his presence known in a big way. "Godzilla Minus One" stomped into theaters over the weekend, and partially thanks to downright rapturous word of mouth for Toho's latest kaiju flick, the film far exceeded expectations. So much so that it trailed only "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" ($21 million) and "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" ($14.5 million) to take the number three spot on the charts.
Director Takashi Yamazaki's new "Godzilla" film opened to $11 million domestically, per The Numbers. That was well beyond what analysts had been predicting heading into the weekend, which is good news all around. The movie had already opened overseas and has since amassed $23 million from international markets. Its total now stands at $34 million worldwide. Wake up, babe, Godzilla is pink now!
Yesterday's big reveals from Brazil's Comic Con Experience (Ccxp) included a first look at "House of the Dragon" season 2, but another powerful lizard stole the show today. The first trailer for upcoming MonsterVerse movie "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" teased a team-up between the two titular monsters, and both of them are sporting a hot new look.
King Kong acquires a mechanical brace on his arm, presumably due to a run-in with monster ape villain Skar King. But Godzilla won the prize for best-dressed kaiju by emerging from his frozen hibernation with pink energy lighting up his spines, gills, and eyes. Did Godzilla spend the summer watching "Barbie" and find himself infused with atomic Kenergy?
In combination with the blue that's also featured in the trailer," "Godzilla X Kong" continues the cinematic trend that's come to be known as "bisexual lighting" --...

Queen Bey is the new box office queen. “Renaissance,” a concert film written, directed and produced by Beyoncé, topped the domestic box office with $21 million in its opening weekend, slightly ahead of expectations.
These ticket sales rank as one of the best debuts for a concert film, joining the company of Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” (far and away the biggest with $92.9 million), 2008’s “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” ($31.1 million), 2011’s “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and 2009’s “Michael Jackson: This Is It” ($23.2 million).
“Renaissance” provided a tidy box office bounty in what would have otherwise been a bleak kickoff to December. According to its distributor AMC Theatres, it’s the first time in two decades a film has opened to more than $20 million on the weekend following Thanksgiving, which is a notoriously slow time at the movies.

Let’s face it, Godzilla was never much of a looker.
But 70 years and dozens of films later, Japan’s favorite kaiju is roaring louder than ever in his latest big-screen incarnation, which may be one of the best Godzilla films ever. Arriving seven years after Shin Godzilla, the Japanese-made Godzilla Minus One puts the American efforts of recent years to shame (I’m looking at you, 1998’s Godzilla) with its combination of spectacular monster movie thrills and genuine emotion. This may be the only Godzilla movie that will make you feel verklempt by the time it concludes.
Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who’s also credited with the visual effects, the film essentially serves as a reboot. The story begins in the final days of World War II, when kamikaze pilot Koichi (Ryunokuke Kamiki, terrific) makes the decision not to die for his country but rather to feign...
