Emma Watson visited Villa Baviera (former Colonia Dignidad) in September 2014. Though the media initially thought she was on vacation, they later found she was doing research for her role.
This movie was filmed in Chile, Luxembourg, Germany, and Argentina.
Following the departure of Augusto Pinochet from the presidency in 1991, Colonia Dignidad renamed itself as Villa Baviera and remained an operational sect until 2007. Residents of the area are allowed entry and exit and the site is presently open to the public for historic tourism.
This is the second film about a dangerous cult that Emma Watson had starred in, following Regression (2015).
Colonia Dignidad was a real-life secret detention camp.
