I have never rated an episode 10 stars before...

But wow, what an amazing finale. I never thought a courtroom segment could be so nail biting. I have watched some films starring John Turturro, but not all. But I'll be damned if his closing speech wasn't one of his greatest moments in film to date.

Everything was just top tier, from the writing to the delivery by every actor in this.

I don't want to post spoilers, but this really is how a finale should be done. I am so glad I caught wind of this series, I have been recommending it to everyone who has asked me what they should watch next.

Best episode of the series
seshasai-tris29 August 2016
Whoa! This episode blew my mind .

The whole series till now has been a build up and we were given no hope about the protagonist. You never see Box help the case really till now. The Andrea case is just a hook as the show writers and director depicted something of greater depth in story, characterisation and cinematography.

In this episode the stakes keep on building up until the last 20 minutes and then everything settled. I was on the edge of my seat for this one. This couldn't have had a better ending. The trial scenes were the best.

The episode tells us that some things just can't change in a person in the end. The way things are left for audience to understand about Andrea's murderer is very good. It would've been nice if CHandra's character had been given a nice ending after all what she's done for Naz.

My rating 9/10

The whole series is sensational ...
Aktham_Tashtush2 November 2018
What a series ,, what a plot .. It literally makes you lose your mind and suspect of everyone .. reached to the point where i wasn't even sure if Naz did it or not ..

presenting many suspects, all with somewhat damming evidence just made the series reach a peak point of thrill and mystery .. and even for some saying the finale wan't as they wished for or as strong as the beginning .. i do understand what are they getting at ,, but keeping in mind we're talking about a 90 minutes episode all focused on the courtroom the episode was satisfying maybe not 100% catching the killer but at least for Naz it was satisfying and somehow purposeful and emotional.

Cast wise ... the whole cast engaged amazingly and they made it look even more mysterious with their near perfection facial expressions .. now that have been said .,. there are four actors were phenomenal ... in the first half of the series .. John Turturro (Stone) and Bill Camp (Box) were so engaging and the primary reason the first half had no gaps or dullness ... the other two arethe magical talent Riz Ahmed and Michael Kenneth Williams ,, Oh my goodness !! their relationship and the deep monologue they had was just so deep and always careful on edge since the minute Freddy gave Naz the shoes to provide fraction in the showers :D :D

finally i just can't believe i'm watching this now .. after more than two years of the premiere .. so if you have reached the finale today .. just be glad you got to watch it.

YOU ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT OF THE SHOW
cdmitchell-1377211 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am seeing too many reviews by people saying "there was no resolution" to the story. That is just blatantly false. The entire point of this finale is that it doesn't matter whether or not he was found guilty, the justice system failed him. His family lost their jobs, his brother is misbehaving, and he went from a straight A student to a convict and drug addict. The justice system failed to protect him, they failed to find other suspects, and they failed to solve the murder. It doesn't matter the outcome of the trial because his life is ruined and he will probably end up in prison again anyway. So no, there was no satisfying conclusion because there shouldn't be one. This isn't Law and Order.

Fantastic Finale

Don't understand some of these reviewers that expected the killer to be revealed and rated the finale bad because they didn't get what they want. This show showed us that we don't always get the answers that we want just as in life and what the real world is truly like.

I'm very happy with this episode

I really loved the subplot with the cat. It mirrored Mr. Stones having hope, losing it and then finding it again. In the end the cat showed that he still has faith. Also I have two cats and I was really glad that the cat didn't die <3.

Amazing

This episode was certainly one of the best of the series. However I think I would have rated it a 9 if it was not for John stones closing speech. This is absolutely incredible and for me one of the best bits of court room entertainment ever filmed. The scene is very powerful to the viewer after your made to feel sympathetic towards John so it really speaks and on a case where it feels like they are continually fighting a losing battle it more than makes up for there performance. It is worth watching the whole series just for this moment. I would highly recommend this to anyone into crime dramas as it has a high quality finish like many HBO shows now. This mini series has a constant mystery to it which I believe what makes it so attractive, we never find out how the killing happened and to be honest I am OK with them leaving it that way.

good watch

Success At Last!!!
lavatch3 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
In this closing episode, the filmmakers were successful in devising a complex and ambiguous courtroom verdict. SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWS: Instead of giving a pat wrap-up, the result is a hung jury with a 6-6 deadlock.

One of the most interesting strands of the film is the story of retiring detective Dennis Box. A man with a conscience, it is clear that Box senses that Naz is innocent, and begins to probe deeper into the evidence. In the process, he discovers that Andrea's friendly financial adviser had an argument with her on the day of the murder. He also discovers that the adviser had a gambling problem was deep in debt, and was also engaged in a personal relationship with Andrea! Although the film does not clearly prove that the financial adviser was the murderer, the evidence uncovered by Box impacts Mrs. Weiss's decision not to retry the case against Naz after the mistrial.

There are two major loose ends in the film, and both concern the attorney Chandra. It was not made clear why she would have to recuse herself in the case for kissing her client in prison. The second issue is why she illegally brought the drugs into the prison cell and administered them to Naz before the trial. The fact that he was so alert during the trial was actually evidence against his innocence, as his primary defense was that he had passed out and never witnessed the murder of Andrea.

Apart from these flaws, this was a superb concluding segment. The malfeasance of Chandra in kissing her client provided the opportunity for John Stone to deliver the powerful closing defense speech to the jury. The performances were all memorable, and the photography was brilliant. Overall, a compelling miniseries!

Disappointing honestly

Warning: Spoilers
Season started with a bang. Then they just kept building and building and it seemed to get better and better. I was expecting them to find some crazy evidence or find something that would finally prove either he was innocent or guilty and then the show just ended. No closure. We have no idea what happened. Overall it was a good episode but after spending over 8 hours watching this season I would've like some kind of answer. Flashback, finding the actual killer, etc.

The Call of the Wind

The Night Of (2016)

Finished Series #31

Season 1

Episode Eight - The Call of the Wind

I was about to type that I was sad for the cat, but at the last second he appeared as Coraline's Cat.

But I was sad about John Stone's illness and I write more, if by chance Naz had been unjustly convicted, the cat stayed in the shelter and John came back with the illness (just like the ending), I would be more sad for the cat and John than for Naz, does that make me a bad person?

The same contrast that we have with Naz, we have with Chandra, Naz started out as an innocent guy, who we felt sorry for him, but then an Eiffel Tower was formed with so many crimes he committed, while Chandra started like the assistant lawyer who had been used to get sympathy from her parents, we also felt sorry for her, then later she showed herself to be self-centered, arrogant, that if she wasn't fired, she would become that blonde lawyer (I believe worse).

The case was always John's, he did everything even when the case was in the hands of the blonde and Chandra, nothing more fair than him winning the case.

He was quite happy telling Chandra that his illness had improved and she didn't even care, the same thing when he had a clue and shared it with her and she took it without thanking him and then wanted to take credit.

Naz used her by telling her to take drugs to the police station and then at the first opportunity he threw her away.

Best characters, John and the cat.

All these eight episodes look more like a pilot episode of a good series than a good series, I've seen a lot of criminal case series and what they like to show most is at the time of the final plot twist, showing how everything happened. , like a flashback to the real criminal, and this series didn't even have the decency to do that, it's an average to bad series.

The real story of this series is revealed
jedly3 September 2016
THE NIGHT OF, Episode 8, The Call of the Wild, and it's a wrap. The last episode of a widely critically acclaimed show. Personally, for me, it ended much stronger than it started. It literally felt like the first six episodes were there just to set up the ending. This show....this series was all about the ending. Is Naz innocent? From the get go, even as we learn of some of his own past dark deeds, we kind of knew the truth anyway. Yes, he is. So, who cares? Who killed Andrea? Was it Mr. Day, the creepy mortician? Was it Ray Halle (Paulo Costanzo), Andrea's CPA? Former Detective Box has some new evidence now. So, maybe… Or maybe Duane Reade and /or Trevor Williams. Or, maybe it's none of the above. But, who cares, because at the end Andrea's death, as tragic as it was, isn't the story. The real story is simple, and it's universal; the story is about people. People who muddle through life experiencing both good and bad things. People who go through life with luck, love, loneliness. People who have everything, including the kitchen sink, thrown right at their head, and they still move forward. Why? Because, life moves forward. Not sideways, and certainly not backwards (Although, I here Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is working on that one.). Life, in all it's craziness, moves forward. The real story is what happens now? Where does life go from here. Naz has a drug problem. While in prison he embraced the "thug life". Can he return to "civilized society"? His relationship with his parents is strained. Will that mend? Stone's eczema is back-- an allergic reaction brought on entirely by stress. Being lead attorney on a high profile case does not do wonders for his complexion. Will he finally overcome that? He does keep the cat, so that's something positive. The real "plot" of this show: a tragic event alters the lives of a series of people, and how do they move forward from there? This series, consistent in its presentation, ends with more questions than answers. But, hey, that's life….

Disappointing.
midge_robby13 October 2021
An inconclusive ending to a great series. Too many questions left unanswered and not just the main one. As it was an extended episode of 90 minutes I felt let down. I shall now go watch the British original series and see how that fares.

Greatest waste of opportunity of any murder mystery i have seen.
grodanlove14 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I had to create an account just to review this title as this episode is the most disappointing episode i have ever seen of any series in my entire life. For me it ruins the whole series that i in beforehand of this episode thought greatly of. The setup was immense, the whole series was a buildup to the final reveal. And then there is nothing, the whole series is a mystery that is left unsolved. In some cases i would find this acceptable, that you can judge for urself what happened. But in the case of this series i just find it appalling. I had this reaction since the series finale had massive potential for a shocking reveal as there was no reveal that would be to obvious. I expected myself that naz would have been shown to be the killer, this reveal would be superb as it not only is unexpected but it is contradictary as he got out from jail. Even the 4 other suspects would have been fine to be reveald as the murderer. Most importantly they should have had a reveal scene of the murder night. What happened without it was that there was no closure and no pay off to all this build up. The only conclusion i can draw to why the writers decided to not have any reveal or any more obvious hint to what happened on that murder night, is that they are trying to be edgy or just being extremely lazy. They should have remembered that there is a reason why every murder mystery either reveals the killer and shows the murder or makes it rather obvious who the murderer is.

A Mockery of a Finale!
malabarspiceghk18 August 2020
This episode was completely out of place, disappointing and a terrible bore to watch. Characters were taking ages to even utter a word, the episode was stretched beyond belief. However the Indian (Hindi) version "Criminal Justice" of the original British namesake (not watched) was more compelling and fulfilling is fantastic with a logical ending, and not contrived by trying to place itself on an intellectual plain, which to my mind is bunkum. Vikram Massey (as Naz) and Pankaj Thripati (as Stone) outguns the part of the cast here hands down. The Hindi version was also unnecessarily stretched but the denouement eroded all that. I rue that I wasted 8 hours of my precious time watching this muck.

Worst finale ever
adviteeya-aggarwal27 July 2017
Crime drama/ suspense/ thriller is my favorite genre and this was the nth crime drama series I started watching with my wife. The first few episodes were slow but then had a great build up to the finale. This episode was set up perfectly for a great ending but we both were left most disappointed by the end. This was definitely the worst ending out of all the crime drama series we have watched and ruins the whole series for us. It's a 95 mins long episode and they waste at least 15- 20 minutes time showing worthless things that have no place in a crime drama. There is no closure provided to the viewers who invested their time in the series. Did he kill her or not? If not, then who did? Forget making Naz meet Chandra, the lazy writers really should have made a reveal, if not in court then at least to the audience either after Naz' acquittal as a flashback. No competent writer should ever make so many mistakes in the finale of the series.
