This Is All We Are
LeCronopio31 August 2019
I am deeply glad to have waited until now to see The Knick, and I simply did not expect a proposal of such a high narrative level. Not enough to be a period series, with an extraordinarily successful production, it owns an exquisitely subtle and complete plot and execution. The arches develop in such an organic and plausible way that you can almost feel the circumstances of the characters, which end up being what they are, and what they will try to be: a portrait faithful to the human being, with its lights, crosses, fears, qualities , with all its flaws, but that above all tries to transcend clinging to its ties in the attempt. There are no absolute catastrophes, unbeatable good, incurable bad, dream happiness or pandemic sadness, there are no happy endings or completely tragic endings, there is life, there is genuineness, there is reality. Thackery condenses and seals the series in an absolute scene with a phrase that portrays everything that it is with human fidelity, flesh and delirium, and that in no way could be improved; the perfect title of the chapter and goodbye: This Is All We Are.

A very good finale, speaking broadly

Warning: Spoilers
My overall rating of "The Knick"'s Season 2: 4/10

With Season 2 - the final season, speculation about revival notwithstanding - having been so hollow and rotted-out in the first two-thirds, the final third recalls the best of Season 1. The characters' arcs conclude quite perfectly and very logically for each one, capturing both their motivations and traits, and their life's path. With that said, there are some worse-done aspects, most of them having to do with Cornelia's storyline. It was kind of an obvious plot from the get-go, and the previous episode's finale all-but-confirmed it, but the resolution of it feels entirely inorganic. First, Philip's utterance about the ports (and an apparently-prolonged stay) is a ridiculously convenient plot mechanism - Cornelia could have learnt that in so many better ways, and what's surprising is that the hadn't already known it. In the end she ditches the guiltless Philip (for the thousandth time) and flees to Australia... It's entirely plausible, and in-character, it's just that her character is infuriating. She's neither here nor there, and isn't particularly well-acted.

Then there's Thackery's plotline. When Chickering Jr is setting up mirror for Thackery, how in the world is it a surprise to him that Thackery intends to operate on himself? And when Thackery has blood gushing in the end, why do the doctors only leap into action once his heart has stopped or whatever, rather than immediately? They can't be that cowed by him, so are they hoping the cut artery will get better?.. Barrow's plotline and his (and the police's) behaviour are also a bit questionable, but that is mostly forgivable being consistent with their portrayals.

A good finale spoiled
silverton-3795917 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have to disagree with the reviews of 8 and more stars for this finale. The self surgery was just a bridge too far for me. With Bertie's misgivings about assisting in Thackery's suicidal attempt to perform the surgery himself, why on earth would he have failed to have his bottle of adrenaline at hand in the theater?

That one big plot hole is less a deal breaker than the way his fellow surgeons just allowed the farce of the self surgery to take place. That whole part of the plot just spoiled the finale, IMO.

I have liked the storyline for the entire two seasons with Thackery up until this one ruinous plot device. The inclusion of the ridiculous techno music overlaid upon the early 20th century settings had been my only dislike until this episode. That makes it only two strikes against the series in my enjoyment of The Knick.

Best epiosde of the Knick..

Warning: Spoilers
No spoilers..I can't believe they can show something like this in a drama series I'm a big fan of Steven soderburgh this a classic TV series and this episode was the best."This Is All We Are" is a dark episode, especially for a finale, and very especially if this turns out to be the series finale now that the show has dropped in the ratings.Everything falls apart in this episode, everyone is going through something terrible algie,Barrow ,Cornelia some big secrets were revealed of Robertson family and Thackery he has done something impossible that could change medical science upside down Clive owen was marvellous in his role the acting, direction, setting, music everything was perfect especially the music,it really takes us in 1900.. This show has always been great. In first season every episode was good and some of them were very good like 7th episode. When I saw knick I was watching other serials like Hannibal and the walking dead someone suggested me to watch the knick in first episode I thought it is not as good as other shows I watch but after some episodes it was the best drama series now about this epiosde I want to say I never gave review to a epiosde but this episode compelled me to give a vote and a review so This will be the best experience when you watch this No word on season three yet. The ratings have fallen, and the buzz seems to have tapered off (although I expect that has something to do with year- end lists being due before the second half of the season was available in addition to the general onslaught of peak TV), so in the words of Ron Howard, tell your friends about this show.....
