Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar for playing the hard-as-nails drill instructor in 1982’s “An Officer and a Gentleman” a few years after winning an Emmy for his role as the cunning Fiddler in “Roots,” died early Friday morning. He was 87.
Gossett’s family announced his death in a statement, writing: “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
In Taylor Hackford’s “An Officer and a Gentleman,” Gossett’s Sgt. Emil Foley memorably drove Richard Gere’s character to the point of near collapse at a Navy flight school. Gossett was the first Black man to win the best supporting actor Oscar for that role.

In Season 3 of “Community,” the study group takes a class from biology professor Dr. Marshall Kane, played by Michael K. Williams. Prof. Kane is an ex-con who earned his degree while in prison.
In other words, Kane has seen some things. But nothing prepared him for the baffling changes in the world when he got out. Specifically, “as someone who just spent the majority of his life in prison, what happened with Legos? They used to be simple. Something happened out here while I was inside. Harry Potter Legos, Star Wars Legos. Complicated kits, tiny little blocks. I’m not saying it’s bad, I just wanted to know what happened.”
Prof. Kane is honestly baffled and looking for an answer. And Williams plays this scene with complete sincerity — which is where the hilarity lies. Because the idea is absurd, but he’s absolutely right. Legos have changed.

Here's our story on the original trailer from the start of the month...
Dan Stevens has been a busy man these past few years, evidenced by the debut trailer for one of the many projects on his docket: sci-fi action film Kill Switch. However, the trailer showcases a rather unconventional effort with cinematography so reminiscent of a first-person-shooter video game, you’d think that this was a trailer for a movie adaptation of Half-Life. For the record, it’s not.

On Thursday, July 14, the Television Academy will announce the nominees for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, and we have all the faith in the world they’ll get every single choice just right.
Ok, maybe they won’t, but only because the 19,000-plus voters literally can’t get every choice right. Unless all the categories squeeze out miraculous ties resulting in extra nominees — similar to last year’s Comedy Supporting Actress category — there are simply too many outstanding series and performers to fit on the overall ballot.
So our choices below not only represent IndieWire’s highest recommendations in the top-line limited series and movie categories, but also some of the shows and performers overlooked thus far in the campaign season. On a related note, category placement is determined, aptly, by our own wishes and not the submission guidelines of the TV Academy. It would be grand to hear...

For the most part, epic television tends to focus on dramas, with comedies usually delivered in smaller, bite-sized episodes. But IFC changed the game with “The Spoils Of Babylon.” The mini-series riffed on more serious dramas, spreading the parody out across multiple episodes, and getting an all-star cast to take part. And that continued with […]

When the Screen Actors Guild nominations are announced every winter, all of the hubbub seems to surround the SAG-aftra's film contenders. The awards show, however, also honors television, and while it may follow the Emmys on the calendar, there's no telling what small screen favorites will get love.
Here's this year's biggest snubs and shockers, including those that vied for Emmy gold but were forgotten by Guild voters.

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.
Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Congratulations to Cederick for a very impressive top score of 79% predicting the 2015 SAG Awards TV nominations on Wednesday. He actually tied with remm824 and cp13 but had the better point total of 13,686 by using his 500 and 200 point bets wisely. Over 700 people worldwide predicted the nominees in eight categories. Among our scoring champ's best picks were Kristen Wiig ("The Spoils Before Dying") as Best Movie/Mini Actress, "Mad Men" making a return as Best Drama Ensemble, a category where he had all five correct. The 2016 SAG award nominations were announced this morning. A few notable names were left off the list (no Jennifer Lawrence) while other categories had pretty much what everyone expected (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series). Critical favorite "Spotlight" got a few nominations, but missed out on the best actor categories. And "Creed" is nowhere to be seen, despite buzz for stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone. In happier news, Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, and Mark Rylance got nominations in multiple solo categories, because the SAG awards just love British people. Elba is nominated for "Beast of No Nation" and "Luther," Mirren for "Woman in Gold" and "Trumbo," and Rylance for "Bridge of Spies" and "Wolf Hall." Mirren and Elba also got a nomination each as part of ensemble casts. So, without further ado, here are your nominees: Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading...

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

The concept for the new IFC comedy "Gigi Does It" is easy to explain, but also bizarre: A feisty Boca Raton grandmother gets a new lease on life. She also happens to be played by 37-year-old actor David Krumholtz, who normally you'd recognize from projects ranging from "Addams Family Values" to the CBS procedural "Numb3rs"... except he's playing Gigi with the help of pounds of prosthetic makeup. Read More: Review: 'The Spoils Before Dying' Is Two Pounds of Fun In a Three-Pound Bag Produced by Krumholtz, Ricky Mabe and Tim Gibbons, "Gigi Does It" was originally inspired by a project Mabe created that featured web videos of Krumholtz in character. For the series, Krumholtz depicts Gigi in a new phase of her life. Now comfortably wealthy following an inheritance from her husband, she decides to cut loose and explore the world on her terms. While Kristen Wiig will be back in the comedy mode we know her for in "Ghostbusters" next summer, she's spending 2015 going down a variety of different cinematic avenues. She's currently in theaters now with "The Diary Of A Teenage Girl," she appeared with Will Ferrell in the Lifetime effort "A Deadly Adoption," went to TV for "The Spoils Before Dying" and "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp," and this fall she puts on her sci-fi boots for Ridley Scott's "The Martian." And yet you might've forgotten about "Nasty Baby." Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, there hasn't been much talk about it since, but the picture is gearing up to open overseas and first trailer has landed. Co-starring Tunde Adebimpe and Alia Shawkat, the latest from Sebastian Silva (who also appears in the film) follows a gay Brooklyn couple, Freddy and his boyfriend Mo, who decide to...

Will Ferrell seems to be getting even looser and limber these days as far as his comedy goes. It’s as if he’s taken the lark-ish, what-the hell approach from Funny Or Die and applied it to any riff that comes to mind. This year alone he’s made a Lifetime spoof “A Deadly Adoption,” co-starred in a Tennessee Williams-esque generations-spanning saga spoof in “The Spoils Before Dying,” and now has another joke in the can. Back in March of this year, Will Ferrell made some history; at least in the world of Major League Baseball spring training. He suited up, headed down to Arizona, and played every position on the field for ten different teams all in one day. His frequent flier miles must be off the charts (though in truth, helicopters were a big help). The day has been distilled down into “Ferrell Takes The Field...

Icf's oddball Spoils of Babylon didn't seem particularly ripe for a sequel when it aired last year, but here we are: The Spoils Before Dying, a six-episode miniseries, finishes up tonight. It's overwhelmingly ridiculous, but joyfully so. I would have called it the strangest comedy of the week by a long shot — until I saw 7 Days in Hell, HBO's tennis mockumentary starring Andy Samberg. Now that's a weird comedy. Both, in fact, are very odd, reveling in hyperspecific nonsense, style parodies, appearances by Michael Sheen and a variety of SNL alumni, and a sense that these projects are probably funnier in idea than in execution. What's the polite term for "vanity project"? Spoils Before Dying is about a jazz musician (Michael Kenneth Williams), his boozy paramour (Kristin Wiig), and his ghost ex (Maya Rudolph). Explaining the plot overemphasizes its significance; mostly it's a lot of silly names and loopy...

Television has become a home for just about any vision in its golden age. With the proliferation of original content creators spanning channels, online entities and various new distribution models and each one looking for a breakout program (if not a brand identity), there has been some really weird stuff on — and off — TV of late. It would be hard to find a stranger addition to the comedy genre than last year's "The Spoils of Babylon," and its sequel doesn't go any more quietly into the night. "The Spoils Before Dying" is oddball entertainment if not at its finest, than at least at its most appealingly weird. If the conventions you skewer are no longer remembered, are you still making a spoof? That’s the question raised by noir satire “The Spoils Before Dying,” a spiritual sequel to IFC’s Funny or Die-produced “The Spoils of Babylon,” which last year parodied over-the-top miniseries about the trials and tribulations of wealthy families. Choosing, in 2015, to take on film noir is a bit like filming an entire TV movie mocking the conventions of Lifetime TV movies–something that “Dying” stars Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig did just last month. Of a generation that grew up when cable was still emerging and the.

President Jen Caserta led IFC’s rebrand from the Independent Film Channel in 2010, transitioning to a TV comedy-focused network. Lust. Murder. Jazz. Dicks. (The private kind.) IFC’s new mini-series The Spoils Before Dying has a surreal good time making fun of all that, along with pretentious art films, late-career Orson Welles, old-timey cop slang, and a bunch of other madcap targets. (For a sample, check out the exclusive clip below, in which the series' auteur Eric Jonrosh, played by Will Ferrell, unveils a "lost" sex scene between Kristen Wiig's jazz singer Delores O'Dell and Michael K. Williams's pianist-p.I. Rock Banyon.) Premiering on July 8, the six-parter is a follow-up to last year’s similarly cuckoo mock-sweeping epic The Spoils of Babylon, and yet it only just maybe makes it into the top three oddest things Kristen Wiig has done on TV over the last year. Most of the reactions I saw roll by in my social media timelines this weekend to the film "A Deadly Adoption" were along the lines of, "What the hell did I just watch?" I can understand the confusion. And it's awesome. "A Deadly Adoption" aired Saturday on Lifetime, and it is, by any metric you want to use, a completely typical Lifetime movie. What makes it stand out is that the film stars Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, and there's nothing about the film at any point that would tip that this is meant as a joke. The film opens with a party being thrown by Robert (Ferrell) and his wife Sarah (Wiig), during which Robert casually remarks about how they're going to have to fix the dock soon, just about the time Sarah walks down to stand on the dock no matter what Robert says. She's six months pregnant,...
