Surprisingly clever prequel to Madagascar
CountRonin16 January 2018
Well... I would not really say that about the first couple seasons (which were still pretty good). Still, throughout the series the humor is actually, well, real humor compared to that raunchy garbage in about half of every comedy in the last decade. Real humor is clean in my opinion, and All Hail King Julien is always clean no matter what. Of course I am not 17 yet and my parents will not let me watch R-rated movies but I do not personally think I am missing out on much of anything. The characters are hilarious (some more than others) and always very fun to watch. The show's screenwriters and character designers actually acknowledge that there is such thing as amusing characters that do NOT hook up, drop F-bombs, or smoke weed. In fact, no form of sex, drugs, or swearing ever occur. The story as well as Julien's kingdom are pleasantly surprising in their complexity, but of course never so complex that the kids would get confused. The first couple seasons are kind of childish but it quickly gets a lot more clever in the third season and beyond. The kingdom is always changing and there is even social commentary every so often, critiquing such topics as coffee addiction, fads, currency, social media, etc. Bottom line: great Netflix show that is recommended to anyone who is NOT annoyed by the characters' voices

Casual good watch with children
toolongdidntmovie13 October 2020
Like me, if you're an animation fan you'll love what they have done with the show! Every episode comes with a different trouble created by our beloved King Julien. The show is very entertaining throughout, and casual, full of life lessons, for instance there are episodes portraying bad habits adults often stuck on. In a sentence, the show is a mix of children theme with dirty jokes for adults. So even if your kids are around you can watch and have a laugh together.

It's above average but this king Julien was really annoying for me and I've watched this TV series just for secondary characters.

Great show
shanefarley13 February 2015
I found. This looking for something to pass the time with my 16 month old I can't stand Disney channel and most cartoons are terrible and empty for real content. This has a good story line creative ideas and truly is good smart funny show for children. I actually enjoy watching this with my son. I could watch this on my own and I'm 34 and have zero interest in cartons typically. I get good laughs from this show frequently. The character of Julien is my favorite his voice alone cracks me up. I had never seen the Madagascar movies but will be getting the three box set because this show. The characters all are well thought out. Need more like this one 10 stars is not enough I would give 100% if it were an option. I hope they make many seasons to come of this show!

IMO one of the best in the last 5 years.
simsbros-892317 February 2018
This show has recently ended, and while it didnt have as long a run as other shows, I think it should be remembered. It was easily the best Dreamworks film to Netflix adaptation, and it is also in my opinion one of the best cartoons in years. I could go on and on about why I liked this series but Ill narrow it down to the main things I appreciated.

First, the show is itself very funny. It has slapstick, yes, but the real humor of the show is through the written dialogue and consistent character writing, something that few cartoons are able to achieve. The humor is not just funny, it is smart and sometimes surprisingly timely. It does a great job of poking fun at stuff we see these days like media bias, gun control, religion etc. And instead of taking sides of these issues it makes fun of the fact that they are issues in the first place and the characters take it from there. A very high level of funny that most cartoons choose not to attempt.

Now, the characters. Julian, Mort and Maurice weve seen before. They are still great, as always. Mort in particular is used much more effectively than in Penguins of Madagascar. But the standouts for this series are its background characters, which are fantastic. Many times background/recurring characters will be written to fit the episode or situation, but not this show. Every single lemur that is named in the series is consistently and carefully, and because of that their personalities are what makes them funny, rather than what they do. My personal favorite is Horst. Never seen without an ambiguous coconut drink in his hand, his semi-vain persona and strange affection towards a Foosa is the cause for much hilarity. And thats just one example, there are may others like him and you will remember all of them my shows end,

I want to talk about Clover, who was a brand new character created for this show. Alot of times with tv prequels to movies, the extra main character that is added just plays off of everyone else exists purely to add so e jokes. Clover, though, is a very tightly written, funny and *important* character. I dont want to give away too much but it is also perfectly explained why she isnt in the films. She is a standout and I actually wished she was in the films now. She is also masterfully voice acted by India de Beaufort, and actress I am not familiar with but that I will give my kudos to and follow from this point.

That brings me to the voice talent of the series, which is just absolutely top notch. Cartoons usually do a pretty good job of this but these actors go above and beyond in this series. Danny Jacobs is honestly more Julian to me than Sasha Baron Cohen. His little mannerisms and slight voice ticks suit Julian so well, its almost uncanny. Morts voice actor(I believe it is Andy Richter) is fantastic as well, ranging from cute to creepy instantaneously. Kevin Michael Richardson is great as Maurice as usual, fitting the mold of the character perfectly. You can almost feel the fun these guys have doing this. I already mentioned de Beaufort, but the background characters are all voiced exceptionally as well. Jeff Glenn Bennett, a veteran voice actor plays several characters in this show and he is as great as ever. His instantly recognizable voice is used so many different ways and to great effect Richter also plays many characters including a masterful voice of Ted, a flamboyant, and emotional unstable lemur with many different voices. I could go on and on, even the guest stars do great work.

The animation is excellent as well. Cartoons these days usually have this down pat but this series incorporates texture, color, and fluid movement like no other. It is surprisingly high grade for a TV show and while it can be seen where budgets were made, it is very well integrated and the jungles of Madagascar are depicted beautifully, dare I say better than the films.

A show of this nature doesnt really incorporate plot as its main draw, but unlike most comedy cartoons like this, AHKJ actually keeps continuity throughout the series. This is something that is rarely seen but much appreciated and shows the effort out in. Not only the plot threads run throughout many episodes, even seasons(Season 6 or the Exiled season is particularly strong in this category), but what happens to the characters continues to effect them and the jungle for the entire series. Yes, even for the background characters. Top notch quality.

Overall, I cannot recommend this show enough. I dont care how old you are, you will not regret watching this show. It is funny, gives you a good feeling and through it all you can feel the effort and care that went into every facet of this show. It stands out from other cartoons in this regard. No expense is spared. You may wonder why I talk so little about Julian and its because, while he is the shows main character, this series is really about how he truly loves his kingdom and is a worthy king to them. Inept and vain as he may be, he always puts his kingdom first went it comes down to the wire. With the help of his advisors and friends he always comes out on top. Honestly I was very sad to see this show go, but now you, reading this, get to watch the entire thing in one fell swoop. I had to vent my appreciation but you have just yet to discover it for yourself. So what are you still doin here? Watch it, your king commands you!

A stroke of creative genius
larisarules16 October 2015
Arguably a prequel to the Madagascar movies. This show is set in Madagascar before the penguins arrive and center entirely around the lemurs, in particular King Julien and his somewhat crazy exploits.

You could consider this an upgrade of the penguin series. The format is doubled in length and the result is more complex story lines. The writing is very creative and over the top hilarious with the obvious.

New characters are introduced, chief among which is King Juliens new security adviser. A paranoid female lemur by the name of clover. Leaving Maurice with more fires to put out than normal. I fear for his blood pressure.

Mort has been somewhat sidelined but seems to be a lot more accident prone than usual. Often at the hands of the king himself. Which seem fitting as he is often super annoying.

King Julien is still voiced by Danny Jacobs and he never disappoints. Making this one of the most hilarious shows in years.

I do from time to time miss Skippers frustration. So I must deduct a star. 9/10

King Julien, self proclaimed king of the lemurs
cathyparr100130 December 2014
I enjoy that cartoon. But, I'm a huge fan of Sasha Baron Cohen. To me, the king just isn't the king unless he's voiced by Sasha Baron Cohen. SBC has King Julien's personality to a tee. I think the King was created to be voiced by SBC. This is not to discredit Danny Jacobs. He does a good job. But, to me, King Julien and SBC are one and the same. I'm sure the children will enjoy this show. I enjoyed the movies. I still like to whistle and tell people that I hope to someday be a professional whistler. I need to come up with more lines to post this. I get a message saying I have to have at least ten lines of text and I think I have twelve. I don't mean to pad the message with words. But, I can't think of more to say.

One of the best Netflix shows for all ages
pheonixknight0020 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers ahead

This show is great. It starts with Julien becoming king and the antics he gets into after that. Such as an episode where the whole kingdom becomes addicted to coffee. Or where Julien stumbles onto a place for a party he thought he wasn't invited to and accidentally destroys it. He blames it on a giant gecko instead owning up to it. To cover up his lie he asks an inventor to make a mecha gecko for them to capture but it goes wild so he must help stop it. Showing that his lie put his friends in danger and he helps stop it.

The animation is spot on, the humor is perfect and the writing is great. I recently saw some episodes of the Netflix Kong King of the Apes and that show is sub-par to this one on every level.

The ending of season two is a cliffhanger making me eager to see season three.

This show teaches that even a self centered person can have a good heart and does what is right when the time comes. It shows that lying can lead to more trouble than its worth. It also teaches that trusting in others like family and friends will help you in life. But it does all of this without shoving the messages down your throat like Kong does.

This show is is amazing for anyone to watch where Kong is a mess. I would love to see Kong fixed with some help from Dreamworks who do a great job here and How to Train Your Dragon.

They just need to release season three for me now.

Poor Spinoff Animation Series
RECB320 March 2024
I understand what the crew were trying to do when they were creating this spinoff animation series but it did not work at all. This spinoff animation was weak and did not make any sense at all. The storyline of this spinoff animation series was weak and did not have any real direction at all. The cast selection throughout this entire spinoff animation series was alright enough but could have been a lot better and stronger. They did not exactly fully commit nor connect to the storyline nor to their respective characters. There was not any sign of chemistry displayed throughout this entire spinoff animation series between the cast members.

Funny and clever in it's execution, All Hail King Julien is a solid prequel
All Hail King Julien, centered around three of the lemurs Julien, Maurice and Mort on their adventures around Madagascar, became the third TV series from DreamWorks Animation and on Netflix after Turbo F.A.S.T. and Veggietales in the House before The Adventures of Puss in Boots in 2015. Since the show still has it's fan base after it ended, I really agree with them that this is a really solid prequel to the Madagascar franchise.

Not only does it deliver on the characterization and complexity of Julien and his antics that we know and love, but his interactions with Maurice, Mort, and everyone else in Madagascar including Clover, who steals the show due to her combination of bad*** and funny, along with his determination to protect the throne from his evil Uncle King Julien. Speaking of which, the villains are interesting, especially Karl, who is by far one of the best characters in the entire show due to his rivalry with Julien. Dwight Schultz, known for his roles in The A-Team, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: First Contact, and Ben 10 as Dr. Animo, did a great job providing a mixture of evil and funny to the character. Also, it provided some social commentary on important topics including coffee addiction, social media, election votes, modern music, and more and they all work without feeling heavy-handed.

Everything else is neat too. The music score is nice, the comedy is well-done thanks to the line-delivery of Danny Jacobs, who did a great job impersonating Sacha Baron Cohan's voice from the movies, and the rest of the cast members including Andy Richter who returned to voice Mort from the movies. And last but not least, the animation and by golly is it gorgeous. The backgrounds, the movements, the expressions, and the cartoony-ness. Oh, and the characters are likeable especially Julien, Maurice, Mort, and Clover.

If there's one nitpick that I do have with this show is that it did started out a little bit childish in the first couple of seasons until the rest of the show got better. That's all I have to say, though.

Overall, as a prequel to one of DreamWorks' Animation's successful franchises, All Hail King Julien is definitely the exact Netflix show that everyone else should check out. It's funny, it's clever, and it's really worth your time. Recommended! :)

A pretty good animation
gavingengzihao1 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This series of animation is very detailed and sometimes can let to some deeper thoughts. Compare to the first movie of Madagascar, some minor characters in the lemurs already exist, for example, Willie. The characters are developed very well. You can always see the changes and same things in their qualities across the episodes. For Julien, he has become more responsible than the beginning of his reign. However, his goal hasn't changed at all----to make his people happy. The stories are superb to me, after all. The voices are much better than the movies, less disturbing and weird. The graphics are clearly much detailed compared to other Madagascar series, similar to Penguins in Madagascar. Trust me, it worth a shot, you will find it interesting while thinking some symbolisms and theme of each story. I also find there are much sarcasm in the shows, hope you find my comment useful and the show enjoyable!

Forever a Favorite
samanthakm-3955724 September 2020
I grew up with this show and it'll always be a favorite of mine. The comedy is hilarious and the characters are likable. It really gives such depth and development to King Julien that the Madagascar movies forget about.

Entertaining, clean humor, heartwarming end.
lex20173 March 2021
I thought this show was hilarious. At times it does get wacky but that's part of the fun. Some shows are just meant for you to laugh. It touched on modern issues like gun control, safe spaces, helicopter parents, social media and others, but instead of taking stances on the issue, the show just showed how the issues could play out for better or worse. The characters were interesting and the writing was very creative. Great show to lift your mood. There are subtle adult jokes, but I don't think kids will understand them enough to notice. Overall the humor was clean. There's some toilet humor, but I didn't mind it too much. Entertaining and funny show. My favorite character was Ted. In fact, I liked mostly all of the characters. The voice actors did great.

Waiting for season 2 and a movie!
sandrarod236 February 2015
Forget the penguins of Madagascar, the lemurs are so cue and funny! My daughters and I have seen every episode on the first season. My daughters have been asking for more lemur shows and I keep telling them that we have seen all the shows. My girls are always humored by the characters dancing and the fun, upbeat music too. I would enjoy seeing another season and even a movie with these adorable characters in it!

I have to say that Mort seems to be the favorite in our household. To be honest, I love each of the main characters and feel that they are perfectly fit with their voices. I have seen and loved many things that Jeff Bennett has voiced over and he didn't disappoint on his characters. Sadly, this show is only shown through Netflix, which is okay to me because we are members.

Absolutely fine and hilarious
mvanhorn-9930821 September 2020
This show is my go to when I need an escape. It's so hilarious (literally laugh out loud funny), and just so good. Plenty of action, Jones and cuteness. The animation is great too! I think this is one of those shows that are more funny for adults than children. I do recommend watching seasons 1-4 of this, then watching the exiled show, then season 5 of all hail King Julien. I lost track of how many times I've seen this, and love it that much. I personally think the show is better than the movies.

Better than the movie
SafariPlum1 August 2020
King Julien is funnier in this TV series than he was in the movies. The movies are wonderful but Danny Jacobs does a superior job voice acting this part. Sacha Baron Cohen didn't have me roaring with laughter in the movies, but King Julien was still fantastic as a character. If they ever do a 4th Madagascar I'd love to see Danny Jacobs get the part for king Julien. He has proved his worth in this series. The Madagascar Franchise as a whole has become a precious re-watched favourite in our household.

Genuinely has some of the funniest most creative jokes I've seen on a kids show, even for those above the target age. The show is engaging, wonderfully animated, and surprisingly clever. Couldn't recommend more.

Amazing, go watch it.
felidaebobcat12 February 2023
All Hail King Julien is a masterpiece. At first, it may just seem like a childish cartoon riddled with butt jokes but if you pay attention, you'll quickly find out there's so much more to this show. The fart and vomit jokes do get kind of gross but they're usually part of the storyline. In previous versions of King Julien, he may seem like a foolish and arrogant king. All Hail King Julien has changed the beloved ringtailed lemur. He may seem dumb and likes partying a bit too much, but he loves his kingdom. He is so much more than a funny side character in the show. AHKJ sounds great, but is it really suitable for children? Kind of. Many jokes are somewhat adult. There was even a scene where a bat and a lemur "wrestled." Off screen, of course. Many mating jokes are made and Mort is revealed to have layed an egg. To be honest, when I was a kid I had no idea what adult jokes were implying so I don't think the presence of subtle adult jokes matter that much.

One of the best shows I've ever seen.
phenoxrainflower26 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favorite shows of all time. It does have some inappropriate jokes, but not very many. It's exciting, funny, meaningful, and inspirational. If you are a fan of Madagascar, and/or a Lemur/animal fan, I definitely recommend giving this a go! But, if you loved Madagascar, don't expect All Hail King Julien to be like it. Non of the characters from the original movies are seen except at the end of the show. (Meaning Alex, Melman, Gloria, Marty, etc.) I love this show, and I think all you animal fans out there will too!
