Fans of Arthouse Emma Stone Sicko Cinema™, have I got good news for you. Coming off her second Oscar win, the "La La Land" star is currently in the midst of shooting what's sure to be a strange and twisted spin on the Western genre in the shape of Ari Aster's "Eddington." But before we lay our eyes on the "Midsommar" and "Beau Is Afraid" director's latest oddity, Stone herself will reunite with her "Poor Things" and "The Favourite" helmer Yorgos Lanthimos for a new project.
Titled "Kinds of Kindness," Stone and Lanthimos finished shooting their new film near the tail-end of 2022, which is the reason it's already good to go so soon after "Poor Things" once again stirred up the "Are Sex Scenes Necessary?" discourse. The movie sees Lanthimos directing from an original script he co-penned with his "Dogtooth," "The Lobster," and "The Killing of a Sacred Deer...

Universal’s “The Fall Guy” will open in mainland Chinese cinemas next month, ahead of its debut in the U.S. and star Ryan Gosling’s native Canada.
The film is set to release officially in China on April 30. That puts it a few days behind the film’s first commercial outings on April 25 and 26 in Europe and other parts of Asia, but a week ahead of its May 3 release in North America.
Directed by David Leitch, the film co-stars Gosling and Emily Blunt, with Gosling playing a veteran stunt double for a self-obsessed movie star.
The film had its world premiere in SXSW earlier this month and received warm praise for its heart and Gosling’s return to a role with charm. Variety’s SXSW review of the picture called it “an epic stunt spectacular,” with Gosling back at his “charisma-radiating” best.

David Ayer's new project, Heart of the Beast, follows a Navy Seal and his combat dog in Alaska. No casting has been confirmed yet, but the script suggests a more nuanced, solo role compared to Statham's usual. Ayer's collaboration with Statham continues in an adaptation of Chuck Dixon's Levon's Trade.
The Beekeeper director David Ayer has another new project lined up following the unexpected box-office success of his Jason Statham-led action-thriller. Grossing $152 million at the worldwide box office against a modest $40 million budget, The Beekeeper proved itself an unlikely box-office hit in the wake of Statham’s far more costly outings in 2023’s Fast X and Expend4bles. Serving as Ayer’s first collaboration with the English action star, the pair are also set to reunite on an adaptation of Chuck Dixon’s Levon’s Trade for Amazon MGM.

David Ayer is following up the success of The Beekeeper with a new dramatic thriller from producer Damien Chazelle.
Ayer is set to direct Paramount Pictures’ Heart of the Beast from a script by Cameron Alexander. The feature, which has been in development since 2017, follows a former Navy Seal and his combat dog amid their attempt to find civilization after getting stranded deep in the Alaskan terrain.
Producers include Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton of Wild Chickens Productions, in addition to Ayer and Chris Long of Cedar Park Entertainment.
Ayer most recently helmed Amazon MGM Studios’ The Beekeeper, the Jason Statham-led thriller that surpassed $150 million at the global box office. The filmmaker, who wrote Training Day and worked on the script for The Fast and the Furious, has previously directed Fury, Suicide Squad and Bright.

David Ayer recently turned heads with The Beekeeper, a seemingly run-of-the-mill Jason Statham action film that turned out to be a strange mish-mash of ideas and bold choices that still feels like a fever dream. Ayer has had some hits under his belt, but as a whole, the filmmaker’s resume has some divisive receptions among them. This brings us to the interesting partnering with the Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle. As Chazelle attempts to recover from Babylon‘s flopping, the First Man director will only be producing the new film that Ayer will helm.

“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu confirmed in a new interview with Vanity Fair that his leading ladies Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sang live on set, similar to how other movie musicals such as “La La Land” and “Les Miserables” were filmed. Studios often rely on pre-recorded tracks when filming musical numbers, which requires performers to lip-synch along on set. Grande and Erivo were not interested in this traditional method.
“These are live vocals,” Chu said. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Fuck the pre-records. We’re going live.’”
Chu remembered telling them that singing live on set meant “there’s going to be a lot of wind in your air pipes. Is that okay?” He said the actors responded with confidence, saying, “Yeah. That’s what we do.”

And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy, and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?
From real-life stuntman and director David Leitch, the director of Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 and the producer of John Wick, comes his most personal film yet: The Fall Guy. It is a hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller...

Musical movies have not been as successful at the Oscars in recent years, with only one winner in the last 50 years. Classic musicals like Singin' in the Rain or Cabaret surprisingly did not win Best Picture. Winning Best Picture doesn't necessarily mean that a musical movie will still be enjoyed years later.
Only 10 movie musicals have ever won the Oscar for Best Picture, and some have stood the test of time better than others. The first musical to win Best Picture was The Broadway Melody, which won at the second ever Academy Awards. Back in those days, the prize was called "Outstanding Picture". The awards have changed a lot over the years, but musicals have still managed to achieve occasional success. The 1950s and 1960s saw a string of musical winners, but more recently the Academy has developed different tastes. There has only been one musical winner of Best Picture in the last 50 years.

Box office success not a measure of impact: Many films, like Interstellar and Slumdog Millionaire, forge lasting connections despite not being number 1. Cinematic gems overshadowed: Movies like Django Unchained, Knives Out, and A Star Is Born faced tough competition, despite their quality and success. Unconventional successes: My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Beauty and the Beast redefined box office success with global impact and enduring popularity.
Some movies have gone down in cinematic history as amazing films, earning significant money during their theatrical releases, but they never quite reached the number 1 spot. Box office performance, while a crucial metric, is not the sole determinant of a film's success or cultural impact. Many films, despite not claiming the top position on opening weekend or throughout their theatrical run, have managed to forge lasting connections with audiences worldwide. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, featuring a slew of backup dancers and vocalists, is the highest-grossing concert film of all time. The backup dancers and vocalists on The Eras Tour play an integral role in the show's success and deserve the same recognition as Swift does for all their hard work. Swift's backup dancers have diverse backgrounds and impressive resumes, having worked with notable artists like Billie Eilish, Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez, and more, while her backup vocalists have been with her for several years and boast their own musical accomplishments.

More than 1,000 Jewish creatives, executives and Hollywood professionals have signed an open letter denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” Oscar speech.
The list of co-signees provided to Variety Monday morning covers a broad swath of the industry including actors, executives, creators (Amy Sherman-Palladino), directors, producers and representatives. About 500 more individuals have added their names to the nearly 500 who signed on when the open letter was first published.
The group’s statement says: “We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.”
Glazer declined to comment.
With such high-profile co-signees as Jennifer Jason Leigh, “La La Land” producer Gary Gilbert and “The Americans” creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, the statement adds, “The use of words like ‘occupation’ to describe an...

Through 96 years of auspicious Oscar ceremonies, the event has often witnessed one major contender becoming the punching bag for critical backlash on social media. In 2017, that dubious honor fell to La La Land, after the shocking moment where presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mixed up the musical with Moonlight, and announced it as Best Picture winner.

Eventually, La La Land not only lost the Oscar for Best Picture but also witnessed a segment of moviegoers shifting from swooning over the film to loathing it. But one person who was unfazed by the Oscars’ mix-up and public comments, was legendary filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Making an exception of watching Damien Chazelle’s Best Picture nominee, three or four times in cinemas, Nolan expressed his love for the film.

A whopping 26 (or 70.3%) of the last decade’s worth of acting Oscar recipients – including 2024’s Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) – were born in the United States. Also counted here is Joaquin Phoenix, who originates from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Compared to the group of performers who prevailed between 2005 and 2014, the 2015-2024 set includes six more Americans, constituting a 16% larger majority. Considering all 96 years of Academy Awards history, the rate of unique American acting victors stands at 68.1%.

By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.

The planet might be on fire, but at least Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos have found one another. The "La La Land" actor and "The Lobster" filmmaker didn't exactly read as an obvious pairing, yet they're already on their way to joining Hepburn-Cukor, Stewart-Hitchcock, and De Niro-Scorsese in the ranks of all-time great actor-director duos. After a couple of feature films ("The Favourite" and "Poor Things") and a short ("Bleat"), the one thing we can say for certain is that we'll never know precisely what these two are going to get up to next.
Speaking of which, we're only days removed from Stone's surprise Best Actress Oscar win for "Poor Things," yet we've already got a release date for her next collaboration with Lanthimos. The duo will return in just a few months with "Kinds of Kindness," a film that they shot back in late 2022 which was previously going by the (impressively Seo-unfriendly) title "And.

The upcoming The Fall Guy, in theaters on May 3rd, and a salute to stunt people, had it’s premiere at SXSW earlier this week.
AP reported:
The SXSW premiere of “The Fall Guy” came with some of its own stunts. A pair of motorcycles sped through the crowds milling outside the Paramount Theater before Blunt and Gosling arrived in the back of a pick-up. Blunt and Gosling weren’t the only ones fresh from the Academy Awards. Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, (a producer on “The Fall Guy”) produced a clip reel of stunts for the telecast. Though stunt performance isn’t an Oscar category (a sore point that comes up in “The Fall Guy”), Leitch thinks it will happen soon.

The Academy Awards often overlook many deserving directors due to the limited number of nominations each year. The lack of diversity in Best Director winners highlights the need for a more inclusive recognition system. Success and recognition can still be achieved without an Oscar win, as many legendary directors have proven.
Christopher Nolan is now an Oscar-winner, but there are plenty of great directors still working today who must continue to wait for their recognition from the Academy. Nolan was previously nominated for Dunkirk, but he can consider himself unlucky to have been overlooked for Interstellar, Inception and Memento, among others. There are only five nominations each year for Best Director, so many great directors miss out. Some of the best directors of all time went their entire careers without winning the Oscar for Best Director, including Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, and Stanley Kubrick.

The Fall Guy has a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of Ryan Gosling's best-reviewed movies. The movie is only three points shy of tying for Gosling's best score ever. The Fall Guy has surpassed big hits from Gosling's career on Rotten Tomatoes, including Barbie.
The Fall Guy has received one of Ryan Gosling's best Rotten Tomatoes scores ever. The movie, which was directed by Deadpool 2's David Leitch, is adapted from the five-season 1981 television show of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the 1980 movie The Stunt Man. It stars Gosling as Colt Seavers, a stunt man who ends up working on a movie directed by a former flame, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), which causes romantic tension as they are both drawn into an action adventure following the disappearance of the movie's star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Despite recent successes, Ryan Gosling's best moments on screen are with Emma Stone in films like La La Land and Crazy, Stupid, Love. While the project is still in the early stages of development, we have finally received a list of cast members that reveals some major names that are going to star in the movie.
After collaborating with Aster on Beau Is Afraid, in one of his better roles, Joaquin Phoenix will be returning to collaborate with Aster once more. The 96th Academy Awards felt like a true celebration. The show was packed with memorable moments, from Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s first Oscar win (which moved everyone to tears) to Ryan Gosling’s electrifying performance of I’m Just Ken, accompanied by Slash on guitar. But that’s not all, this year’s Oscars have also introduced some big changes.

These shifts came after the highlight of the long 2017 Oscars, which turned into a disaster when they announced that La La Land had won Best Picture instead of Moonlight.

All artists have phases within their careers, and while it's easy to demarcate what those phases are in hindsight, it can also be possible to see them emerging and mutating in real time. Emma Stone, an actress who began her journey as a comedy darling in films like "Superbad," "The House Bunny," and "Zombieland," soon found herself climbing to the A-list, nominated for an Academy Award for "Birdman" and winning Best Actress for "La La Land."
This past weekend, Stone won the Oscar for Best Actress for the second time, for her performance as Bella Baxter in "Poor Things." It's a win that seemingly signals a change in her career from a quirky ingenue to a complex and daring leading lady, especially when coupled with her other recent turn as Whitney Siegel in "The Curse."
Continuing that emerging trend, The Hollywood Reporter just announced that she'll be joining the cast...

Since 1940, the record for highest average screen time between same-year lead acting Oscar winners has been held by Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh (“Gone with the Wind”), whose mean of one hour, 54 minutes, and 43 seconds will likely never be surpassed. Nonetheless, there is a brand new pair in second place, as 2024 Best Actor and Actress champs Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) came within 10 minutes of dethroning the long-reigning duo. Indeed, both together and separately, their especially lengthy performances inspired several brushes with Oscars screen time history.
Murphy was specifically awarded for one hour, 53 minutes, and 10 seconds of acting work, while Stone clocked in slightly lower at one hour, 37 minutes, and 19 seconds. Understandably, each far outpaced all of their fellow nominees, respectively landing 27 and 22 minutes above their lineups’ averages. Their own average of one hour, 45 minutes, and 15 seconds makes them only the second pair of lead victors to exceed 100 minutes.

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.
