A new Soccer Mommy era is upon us: the Nashville-based musician has unveiled “Lost,” a heartfelt new song that serves as her first release since last year’s Karaoke Night EP.
Soccer Mommy — A.K.A Sophie Allison — debuted “Lost” during her short run of intimate, stripped-back shows in New York and Los Angeles (appropriately titled “The Lost Shows”) throughout the last week. It’s her first original tune since her excellent 2022 album Sometimes, Forever.

“Lost” is built mostly from an acoustic guitar, hearkening back to Soccer Mommy’s early days performing acoustic sets at DIY venues. “Lost in a way that don’t make sense/ Lost in a way that never ends,” she croons in the chorus, with plenty of longing baked into the song’s warm, dazzling arrangement.

Exactly ten years after the genre-mixing, canine-driven Hungarian thriller “White God” landed the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, this year’s ceremony culminated in the same prize going to a somewhat corresponding title: Chinese director Guan Hu’s “Black Dog,” a fusion of western, film noir and offbeat comedy with a highly lovable mutt at its center. The film, about a damaged loner returning to his desert hometown after a spell in prison and finding a kindred spirit in an equally world-weary greyhound, beat 17 other titles to take the top prize in the festival’s second-most prestigious competitive section. (The festival’s Official Competition awards will be handed out tomorrow night.)
Jury president Xavier Dolan, the actor-auteur behind such films as “Mommy” and “Laurence Anyways,” commended Guan’s film for “its breathtaking poetry, its imagination, its precision [and] its masterful direction.” He echoed the enthusiasm of Variety critic Jessica Kiang,...

Oneohtrix Point Never has shared his new album, Again, today (September 29th) via Warp. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
In a statement, the artist born Daniel Lopatin described the project as “a speculative autobiography” that began as an interpretation of his musical identity during young adulthood from the perspective of middle age. It grew into an “‘illogical period piece” as Lopatin pondered what could have been had he made different musical decisions.
The album’s artwork features an original sculpture by Matias Falkbakken (which Lopatin helped conceptualize) and was photographed by Vegard Kleven. In anticipation of the album, Opn shared the single “A Barely Lit Path.” Check out the music video below.

Soccer Mommy has dropped an EP full of covers called Karaoke Night, featuring her unique take on songs by Taylor Swift, Pavement, Slowdive, and more. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
Along with Sophie Allison’s excellent reimaginings of Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up the Sun” and Swift’s “I’m Only Me When I’m with You,” the five-track Karaoke Night includes her renditions of “Here” by Pavement, “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M., and “Dagger” by Slowdive. Nothing surprising here — if you’re at all familiar with Soccer Mommy’s catalog, you can hear how all five artists have influenced her music, from bubbly pop to scrappy indie rock.

One of the most visually ravishing movies I saw at Sundance Film Festival early this year was C.J. “Fiery” Obasi’s Mami Wata, “A West Afrikan Folklore,” as our exclusive debut of the alternate poster notes. The black-and-white Nigerian feature brings a folk-futurist style to the tale of a battle between opportunistic militants promising technological progress and a matriarchal spiritual order living in fragile harmony with the ocean. Picked up by Dekanalog for a theatrical release beginning on September 29 at Bam in NYC and Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center, the film will expand in the weeks to follow.

Fifteen years and a few largely forgotten side projects after the band’s disbandment in 2008, Be Your Own Pet have regrouped for Mommy. The album opens with “Worship the Whip,” an ode to Bdsm in which lead singer Jemina Pearl Abegg sneers, “Count your lashes and beg for more…Pray at the altar in your temple of pain,” over a wiry guitar line. The track boasts the same let’s-rock attitude that the Nashville garage-punk quartet’s previous releases did, even if the throwback vibes fall on the dusty side.
Lack of artistic development can be forgiven for a band like Be Your Own Pet that trades in straightforward pop-punk. But at times, they seem to be running on fumes. “Pleasure Seeker,” for one, shoots its wad with a super gritty riff on a song that could otherwise be characterized as a nonentity. In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at several videos from Xavier Dolan, including the two he made for Adele. Xavier Dolan is quitting filmmaking, because according to him 'art is a waste of time'. The once-wunderkind turned enfant terrible of Canadian cinema made some excellent films in his active years, some slightly thorny and fickle ones and some clunkers. But I think his most impactful pieces of art are in fact his three music videos, all of which are to be found below. One...

Be Your Own Pet have released the new single “Goodtime!,” the latest to come off their highly-anticipated third studio album Mommy. Stream it below.
With the band having recently reunited after 15 years, the vivacious “Goodtime!” follows previous singles “Hand Grenade” and “Worship the Whip,” which all prove that the time spent away from the spotlight hasn’t diminished Be Your Own Pet’s liveliness. It’s instrumentally as raucous as the video that accompanies it, with quick bursts of raw punches backed by garage-like clamors that fully encapsulate classic punk rock energy.
Lyrically, the song has a more serious, yet entirely relatable, message. It sees vocalist Jemina Pearl expressing Fomo because of the responsibilities life has thrown at her since she first started the band at 16. “Used to be the life of the party/ Crashing out nothing to lose/ Now I’m not so juvenile/ I got nothing left to prove,...

Young Miko is relaxing on a Saturday afternoon when I reach her on Zoom. Given that she’s about to kick off her first-ever world tour in Guatemala later that night, it’s hardly a regular Saturday, though. “I’m resting as much as I can,” says the Puerto Rican artist, 24. “I’ve been so busy that it wasn’t until two days ago that I realized I’m starting the tour.”
Since releasing her EP Trap Kitty in 2022, Miko has upended the sound of Latin trap with bouncy tracks and incomparable Spanglish lyricism.

The seaside village of Iyi is the setting for C.J. “Fiery” Obasi’s mythical Mami Wata, which chronicles the fraught relationship between an all-powerful African water deity and the villagers who are currently embroiled in a period of unrest. Seven years before its Jan. 23 world premiere in Park City — the first-time that a homegrown Nigerian feature has scored a coveted slot in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at Sundance — C.J. Obasi’s “Mami Wata” began with a vision.
The director was sitting on a West African beach, in between projects and contemplating his next move. Suddenly, an apparition came to him: A mermaid standing on the ocean’s shore, beckoning to a mysterious young woman behind him.
“It was really vivid,” Obasi says. “It was in black and white. In the vision, the goddess’ eyes are red, but also very soft. There was a kindness to her eyes. When I came to, I said, Ok, so my next movie is ‘Mami Wata.’”
What followed was a personal and professional journey to understand that moment on the beach, and to breathe life into a movie about the titular mermaid-deity of West African folklore.

'Cancel culture' vultures are now circling Disney cartoon character 'Mickey Mouse', that according to the book "Birth of an Industry: Blackface Minstrelsy and the Rise of American Animation" by Nicholas Sammond, was created to be the most popular ‘Jim Crow’ minstrel of all time:
"Commercial animation in the United States didn’t borrow from blackface minstrelsy, nor was it simply influenced by it, " writes Sammond.
"American animation is actually in many of its most enduring incarnations an integral part of the ongoing iconographic and performative traditions of 'blackface'.

Notebook is covering the Cannes Film Festival with an ongoing correspondence between critics Leonardo Goi and Lawrence Garcia, and editor Daniel Kasman.Pacifiction.Dear Leo and Danny,In my first correspondence, I wrote that the Competition got off to a slow start, and, well, maybe it never really did find its footing. Most critics, myself included, seemed to agree that the festival was on the whole an unmemorable one, especially in comparison to the strong 2021 edition, which no doubt benefited from a spate of pre-pandemic holdovers. There are of course exceptions. Jerzy Skolimowski’s Eo was a genuine UFO, delivering images and sensations that I’d never quite seen or experienced, while Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castiang-Taylor’s De Humani Corporis Fabrica (The Fabric of the Human Body) played something like a journey to inner space to match the Discovery’s journey to outer space in 2001: Space Odyssey, even...

September usually means the beginning of the traditional fall TV season. As such, Hulu’s list of new releases for September 2021 contains some impressive TV swings.
For starters, all of ABC and Fox’s (both now united under the Disney banner alongside Hulu) fall season offerings will be made available to stream on Hulu the next day. More impressively, however, two FX on Hulu originals make their way to the streaming world this month.
The first is the long-awaited adaptation of the classic comic Y: The Last Man. The story of a virus that destroys every mammal with a Y-chromosome (save for one escape artist and his monkey) is set to premiere on September 13. Shortly after that, the B.J. Novak-produced anthology series The Premise arrives on September 16. Even those who are fatigued from timely anthology concepts will want to check this one out.
