While he’s stayed busy in the cinema and on UK TV, Nick Frost hasn’t had as much success cracking the world of Us network telly. He’s linked to a pilot for Fox called Sober Companion, which is still in limbo, but he’s also attached to a new show, The Finger.Ben Karlin, who boasts work on The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Modern Family on his CV, is aboard to co-write the pilot with Frost and oversee the show. Frost will star as Nick Ferguson, the world’s most famous – or perhaps that should be infamous – jewel thief, who plans to quit the criminal world and settle down to a quiet life, mostly because he wants to spend more time with his nine-year-old son. But he soon discovers that playing within the law and running a sandwich shop might not be as easy as pulling off gem heists.

Did Fox‘s events department jump the gun or just use the wrong poster? People attending the Fox upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre today were greeted with movie-style posters for all of the network’s new series as part of Fox’s new marketing campaign with the tagline “We Are …” (We Are Empire, We Are Weird Loners, We Are Utopia, etc. — see photos.) But among the shows that were showcased was Sober Companion, which also got the “We Are” treatment at the very entrance of the Beacon. The problem is that the Sober Companion comedy pilot, starring Nick Frost and Justin Long, has not been picked up to series. (I hear the posting was the work of an outside vendor.) The network opted not to pick up any of its comedy pilots last week, instead upping the order for Mulaney from 6 to 13 episodes. It left two pilots alive: Matt Hubbard’s Cabot Cottage,...

Hgtv was planning on airing a new house-flipping show, Flip It Forward. However, following a revelation by Right Wing Watch that the proposed show’s hosts had a history of religious bigotry, stalking an abortion doctor and anti-gay activities like protesting pride celebrations. Hgtv has cancelled the show.
Let’s start with the good news. Despite rumors that Fox might give in to the powerful influence of producer Seth MacFarlane, Fox has decided to cancel the offensive, unfunny Dads. Unfortunately, there’s also bad news — the promising and endearing Enlisted (also the Chris Meloni sitcom Surviving Jack, which inspired strong feelings in few people). In worse news for comedy, the network also passed on two promising-sounding pilots, Dead Boss and Fatrick. Fatrick reunited Ray Ford with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchka Kajhan. Dead Boss was a remake of a British comedy with Jane Krakowski and Amy Sedaris.

Hello dear readers, and welcome to this week’s edition of the WhatCulture news brief. This has been a bit of a slow news week, without our usual batch of big and exciting news stories. Don’t worry, there are definitely some intriguing things in this week’s roundup, but we’ll be talking about eight of them this time instead of the usual ten. I do, however, have quite a few honourable mentions to share, so I guess things even out?
This week we heard news about two big remakes, one of which is Scarface and the other… is a surprise. Trust me, it’ll get you talking! We also have some Ant-Man news, a couple trailers that may or may not ruin your childhood, and updates on Fast and Furious 7 and Prometheus 2. So, let’s jump right into it!

Urman, who previously created the CW drama Emily Owens, MD for the studio, sold three projects this season — two of which, drama Jane The Virgin at the CW, based on the popular telenovela, and comedy Sober Companion at Fox, were picked up to pilot. Following in the footsteps of Cornetto chums Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, Nick Frost has scored some welcome Stateside recognition with the lead in a new sitcom pilot. He's set to star alongside Justin Long in Sober Companion.Frost will be Robert, a smart, ambitious lawyer who also battles a huge addiction problem. When it begins to affect his work and he passes out drunk in court, he's assigned a sober companion to help him deal with his issues.Long is taking on that role, helping Frost's character stay away from all the things that threaten to get him in trouble lest he lose his job and potentially end up behind bars for his behaviour. We imagine, given that it's a sitcom, that things won't go completely smoothly. No director has been announced yet, but David S. Rosenthal and Jennie Snyder Urman have written the script and would run any eventual show.

And so the best friend has become the … other best friend. Most well-known as Simon Pegg's lovable chum in films from Shaun of the Dead to The World's End, Nick Frost has just joined Fox's comedy pilot Sober Companion as inebriated attorney to Justin Long's sober coach. In the pilot, Frost's character, an alcoholic lawyer, is court-ordered to spend 90 days with Long's eccentric sober companion, who relies on unorthodox methods to help his client abstain. If these two have good buddy chemistry, we look forward to some kind of no-holds barred best-friend cage match between Justin Long and Simon Pegg in real life.

In one of the biggest casting coups for Fox this season, the network has tapped British writer-actor Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Paul) as the lead opposite Justin Long in comedy pilot Sober Companion. Written/exec produced by David S. Frost’s Robert is intelligent, driven and an addict.
