The doctors were in at the top of Nielsen’s streaming ratings for the beginning of April.
Medical dramas The Resident and Grey’s Anatomy were the top two titles for the week of April 1-7, finishing with 1.18 billion and 1.15 billion minutes of viewing time (both stream on Hulu and Netflix). The Resident actually slipped a little from the previous week‘s 1.48 billion minutes, which was good for second overall, but the show that had been ahead of it — Netflix’s 3 Body Problem — fell further. The sci-fi series dropped by about 47 percent to a still solid 937 million minutes of viewing.
Disney’s animated movie Wish had its streaming premiere on April 3 and racked up 1.02 billion minutes of watch time over its first five days on Disney+. It’s the first film on Disney+ to crack the billion-minute mark since Elemental did so in September 2023. Bluey (1.08 billion minutes) also crossed the...

Well, get ready to witness the magic of ‘Lion King’ in a whole new way as Mufasa: The Lion King’s first teaser trailer was recently dropped (April 29). And we got to learn that Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in charge of the soundtrack for the live-action animated prequel to The Lion King.
The songwriter-actor, 44, composed the music for a number of films and TV shows, including Moana and Encanto, to refer a few. Not to mention making physical appearances in Mary Poppins Returns, 200 Cartas, and other flicks.

With the arrival of the first trailer for the "live-action" "Lion King" prequel "Mufasa: The Lion King" came news that the film's music is being spearheaded by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the aftermath of the smash success of his stage musical "Hamilton" (which was eventually released as a movie on Disney+), Miranda seemed to be the guy in Hollywood, working on music for things like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Moana," "Vivo," and "Encanto," just to name a few, while also physically appearing on screen in "Mary Poppins Returns," "In the Heights," "His Dark Materials," and more. The dude was everywhere, and, as often happens when someone becomes overexposed, a backlash began. His past couple of years have been more subdued, and "Mufasa: The Lion King" marks his return to the familiar arms of The Walt Disney Company.

The road to movie stardom for Dwayne Johnson is one of the unlikeliest in recent memory. A third-generation professional wrestler known the world over as “The Rock,” Johnson nabbed a supporting role in 2001’s “The Mummy Returns” and made such an impression that he starred in a successful stand-alone film, “The Scorpion King,” the very next year.
As his film career progressed, it became evident that, despite his success in action films, Johnson had a distinct flair for comedy, which he began to show off in such films as “Be Cool” (2005), “Central Intelligence” (2016), “Moana” (2016) and in his biggest-grossing film, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017). One of the most recent was “Jungle Cruise” (2021) for Disney.
But it’s in high-concept action cinema that Johnson has found his greatest success, especially after hopping aboard the highly lucrative “Fast and Furious” franchise. He even got his own spin-off adventure, “Hobbs & Shaw” (2019), which...

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem delivered its second straight No. 1 showing among streaming titles, leading the rankings for the last week of March. The acquired series top 10 had several new entrants, thanks in part to a change in how Nielsen reports the numbers.
The ratings service says it made an “enhancement” to its Streaming Content Ratings, which is the basis for the weekly top 10 lists, that results in a number of programs being added to the Scr product. (They weren’t previously “due to business agreements which preceded the rankings, coupled with the associated technical aspects of measurement.”) The affected programs stream mostly on Hulu and Peacock after airing on linear networks.
The upshot is that former Fox series The Resident (1.48 billion minutes on Hulu and Netflix) and animated mainstays Family Guy (837 million minutes on Hulu) and American Dad (619 million on Hulu) all made their first appearance in the top...

Jesse Eisenberg’s latest Sasquatch Sunset audience looked a little different than your typical film screening. The actor-producer took his movie back to the source material this week, showing it to a group of bonobos at Ape Initiative in Des Moines, Iowa.
The film, released at Sundance earlier this year, features Eisenberg and co-star Riley Keough dressed in prosthetic bodysuits to portray a family of sasquatches journeying across North America. The actors attended “ape camp” to learn how to move as their primate characters for the David and Nathan Zellner written-directed film, which hit select theaters on April 12.
In People‘s footage of Eisenberg and the Zellners’ visit, several of the primates watch the film closely. “The bonobos were very curious about Sasquatch Sunset,” Dr. Jared Taglialatela, the director of Ape Initiative, and Dr. Sara Skiba, Ape Initiative’s director of communication, told the outlet. “For many of the bonobos,...

A new plot update for Disney's upcoming sequel, Moana 2, should make Maui fans happy.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was arguably the biggest name in the original Moana from 2016 as the demigod Maui, later taking on a role as a producer for Disney's live-action remake coming in July 2026.
Maui was then confirmed to return to action in Moana 2 when it was announced as one of Disney's next movies, with fans wondering if his role would be as substantial as it was eight years ago.

The Walt Disney Company is facing yet another stock drop. In the last two weeks, Disney’s stock went from $122.82 to $113.87 at the time of this article, a drop of about $9. What is going on?
The stock initially increased in early April ahead of the Annual Shareholder Meeting when everyone was waiting to see if activist investors like Nelson Peltz would gain a seat on the Walt Disney board. When the media began reporting that the current board would likely remain, the stock prices began to fall. When voting was concluded, and the status quo remained, the stocks started dropping again.
Before the shareholders meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger made several announcements at the Q2 2024 earnings call in February. Announcements like a “Moana” television show being reworked into a second film, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour streaming on Disney+, and a deal with Epic Games for a partnership with Fortnite.

Released back in 2016, Moana was a proper hit for Disney and became one of the company’s most beloved new movies. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson did an amazing job voicing Moana and Maui, respectively, which is why the announcement of a sequel did not really surprise us. And while we know that the sequel is coming out on November 27, 2024, Disney has been scarce when it comes to footage from the upcoming sequel, so we don’t really have much for you.

Being the current representative of the Hollywood action hero community, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has always stayed an arm’s length away from the villainous WWE persona that gave him his first taste of recognition and fame. But after a lengthy sabbatical and a worse-for-wear stretch in Hollywood, his eventual return to the ring was perhaps inevitable, and as such, one of the lesser brow-raising points of his career.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the Final Boss [Credit: WWE]What did however seduce an already fascinated audience was the former People’s Champion’s resurrection as a heel, his readiness to brutality, and the sheer perverse enjoyment that he has (seemingly) derived from it. The Rock’s new persona, if not anything else, only proves how severely Hollywood messed up by exiling his evil façade in favor of a generic burly everyman hero obsessed with one-man rescue missions through tsunamis and earthquakes.

What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.

Jon Musker and Ron Clements' 2016 animated Disney film "Moana" was a massive hit, making over $687 million worldwide. The titular character is a princess from the Polynesian island of Motunui. Her people are content on their island and hate venturing out into open waters, a mandate that Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) decides to break when a blight strikes her village. The bulk of "Moana" follows the princess after she sets sail and befriends Maui (Dwayne Johnson), an impish demigod with a connection to the blight. "Moana" was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
A "Moana" TV series was in the works at Disney, although those plans were surprisingly altered in February 2024 when CEO Bob Iger announced that the series was being reworked into a movie sequel instead. The release date was given as November, only nine months from the announcement. In terms of Disney marketing, that was pretty short notice.

Taylor Swift made her chart debut in Nielsen’s streaming rankings, as her concert movie The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) had a strong showing over its first four days of release on Disney+.
The film racked up 677 million minutes of viewing in the United States in the week of March 11-17 (it debuted on Disney+ on March 14), finishing second among movies and eighth among all titles for the week. The Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak) announced their Peak Conversations panel, sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, will take place in Los Angeles on May 1.
The first celebration of Pasifika women in Hollywood will feature and highlight the achievements Moana and Mean Girls actress Auli’i Cravalho, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, and Great Scott Productions founder Naomi Scott with moderation by Moana 2, and Thai Cave Rescue screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller. The talanoa (or discussion) will focus on issues specific to Pasifika women and their journeys in the entertainment industry.
“May is Aapi Heritage Month yet you’ll find Pasifika (or Pacific Islander) people are rarely prioritized and often erased in celebrations despite us being named in them. Most Aapi organizations have no Pasifika staff or even board members so it’s why Peak exists. We’re the only Pasifika-led organization doing this work who will advocate for us the way we do.

Dwayne Johnson’s stint at WrestleMania 40 might be over, but he is far from done. Cody Rhodes is the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion after dethroning Roman Reigns, but The Rock is not quite ready to draw the curtains on their rivalry.
The former WWE champion lit up the arena with his presence in the ring on Saturday night. However, the story of the Bloodline ended differently, even as the stakes were against Rhodes. As momentous as the occasion was, Johnson also sounded a warning to the new champion.

In his short break from movies, The Rock has utilized the time with utmost productivity. Certainly, The Rock has a lot on his plate now as he took over the Board of Directors of WWE’s parent company, Tko Holdings. Beyond that, he also owns several businesses including his production company, Seven Bucks Productions; tequila brand, Teremana Tequila; energy drink company Zoa Energy; Project Rock apparel brand and newly launched, the United Football League.

Amid that, The Rock has been a full-time movie star and has a series of slates attached that are yet to move to production. So, being a part-time wrestler, he is most likely to disappear from the arena for a while, but before that, one female superstar complimented The Rock.

What happens in Vegas… fuels a year’s worth of hope for theatrical exhibitors.
From April 8-11, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, Universal, Paramount, and Disney — not to mention the faith-friendly Angel Studios and anime distributor Crunchyroll — have four days at CinemaCon to wow theater owners (and the press) with their plans for the summer blockbuster season and beyond. However, there are only so many times that NATO, the MPA, and the studios can say “movie theaters are back!” without sounding like Chicken Little.
The reality is 2024 will be lucky to match the levels of last year, and 2025 has its own challenges if the industry faces another round of strikes. Even so, Adam Aron’s hundreds of soldier-owners from his AMC army will be looking to him for reassurance at the world’s biggest exhibition pep rally.

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

Andor was such an unexpected, soaring success that we're surprised more of the team behind the series hasn't been snapped up quickly to work on other projects at Lucasfilm. Well, now one of them has – Beau Willimon, who was a core part of Tony Gilroy's writing team (he scripted the superb mini-arc set in the Narkina 5 prison complex), is now aboard to co-write big screen effort Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi with director James Mangold.
Mangold – who previously directed Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny for Lucasfilm – has been working on the script but also turning his attention to production on his Bob Dylan biodrama A Complete Unknown. So it makes sense him adding a co-writer to work on the Star Wars project currently known as Dawn Of The Jedi, which was announced last year at Star Wars Celebration in London.

After endorsing Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said in a new interview that he won’t publicly support either candidate — whether it’s Biden or Donald Trump — in 2024. “I think it’s between me and the ballot box,” Johnson said.
In September 2020, the wrestler-turned-actor and self-described “political independent and centrist” broke from his personal tradition by throwing his weight behind the Biden and Kamala Harris ticket, which marked the first time he had ever backed a candidate in his decades-long career.

Disney has seemingly shifted its release schedule around again. Now we have some updated release dates for several upcoming Disney Films, including ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu,’ ‘Tron: Ares,’ and the live-action adaptation of ‘Moana’ (which seems redundant at this point.)
The release dates are now as follows:
‘Tron: Ares’ will be released next year on Oct. 10, 2025. The Jared Leto-led film is currently in production.
‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ will be released on May 22, 2026.
‘Toy Story 5’ will be released on June 19, 2026.
The live-action version of ‘Moana’ will now be released on July 10, 2026, instead of June 27, 2025. This move is likely due to the hastily announced ‘Moana 2’ coming later this year.
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently indicated that Disney was going to cancel some film and streaming projects to reduce output and focus on quality over quantity. To stop the box office losses, Disney is also doubling...

In great news for fans of Baby Yoda, Buzz and Woody, and Disney princesses (as well as Disney shareholders), Disney announced a blockbuster slate of films set for release in 2026.
First up, on May 22, 2026, is “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a feature expansion of the Emmy Award-winning “The Mandalorian” series that introduced the world to Baby Yoda. No word yet on whether star Pedro Pascal will appear as the title character as he’s done in the streaming series. Jon Favreau is aboard as director.
Next, on June 19, 2026, is “Toy Story 5.” Little is also known about that project but Disney boss Bob Iger revealed in 2023 that another installment of the Oscar-winning franchise was en route.
Finally, on July 10, 2026, Disney will release a live-action version of “Moana” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. This is not to be confused with an animated “Moana” sequel that Disney has set for release later this year.

Woody and Buzz have a date to return to theaters. Disney will release Pixar’s Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026, the studio announced Friday.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced Toy Story 5 in February 2023, with the sequel an attempt to return to form for the franchise after the disappointing performance of the 2022 spinoff, Lightyear, which voice starred Chris Evans. Toy Story has spanned four mainline films dating back to 1995, with the most recent installment topping $1 billion at the box office in 2019. The features have voice starred Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.

One of Hollywood’s biggest stars — Dwayne Johnson — has just walked back his endorsement of President Joe Biden, and on Fox News of all places.
You’re welcome?
Disney alumn “The Rock” appeared on Fox & Friends in an interview with Will Cain. He said that he regrets endorsing Biden in 2020 and isn’t happy with the state of the country right now.
“Am I happy with the state of America right now? Well that answer’s no. Do I believe we are going to get better? I believe in that, I’m an optimistic guy and I believe we can get better,” he said.
However, he didn’t specifically endorse Donald Trump, either. Rather, he said he’s not going to share who he’s voting for November.
“I thought back then, when we talk about hey you know I’m in this position where I have some influence and it’s my job then,...

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen opened with a bang on Netflix.
The series, a spinoff of Ritchie’s 2019 film, delivered almost 1.21 billion minutes of viewing over its first four days (it premiered March 7), according to Nielsen’s streaming rankings for March 4-10. It ranked second among all streaming series for the week, behind Love Is Blind (1.5 billion minutes), which repeated as the top overall title.
Netflix also got a big first week for Millie Bobby Brown’s movie Damsel, which edged The Gentlemen for second place overall: Damsel had 1.209 billion minutes of viewing to 1.205 billion for The Gentlemen. Two other shows also topped the billion-minute mark — Bluey (1.1 billion on Disney+) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.04 billion on Netflix and Peacock).
After a huge opening and a strong second week, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender fell by about 51 percent to 950 million minutes, still good for sixth place overall and third among original series.

After Disney declared victory in its proxy battle with activist investor Nelson Peltz, CEO Bob Iger went on a theme-park offensive during the company’s annual shareholder meeting.
Delivering scripted video remarks from a perch overlooking Disneyland, Iger extolled the parks as a key strategic area of focus and offered a brief first look (see below) at the “possible” new Avatar-themed area at the Anaheim park. Pandora – The World of Avatar, has been up and running at Disney World in Florida for years and Iger said it is the company’s “intention” to make it a new feature of Disneyland. “We’re thrilled about many potential new stories that our guests could experience in Walt’s original theme park, including the opportunity to embark on all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to the world of Pandora,” he said.

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.
