This is the fourth of so far 5 "Engel"-movies starring Katja Weitzenböck. She plays a lawyer who fights for people in need. In this film and another one I watched, there were cases of medical malpractice involved, so i guess that is a recurring theme. The central character is supposed to be likable, but it is all very cringeworthy. First of all, the actress is not particularly talented, in terms of range and she also seems to have the same face expression all the time. But the bigger problem is that she is depicted and written like a saint, the perfect character who helps the poor and that is always a bad premise. Characters need rough edges and flaws. They need character. That is why they are called like this. Dr. Patricia Engel does not have either. That is why probably all of her films basically appear the same and if you have seen one, you have seen all of them. No surprises here anymore. I don't really need anymore sequels, unless they finally bring some real creativity to the script.
The film's director is Sigi Rothemund and he is very experienced. at 70 years, he has worked on roughly a 100 productions and his son directed the Oscar-nominated Sophie Scholl movie. It's a bit disappointing that he did not come up with something better here. "Engel der Gerechtigekit" is also a pretty awkward and narcissistic play on words including the main character's last name. The writer is Jürgen Werner and he also worked on the other films. The cast isn't bad actually at all. Atzorn, Brandrup, Schweins, Nemec and Thieme (personal favorite) are all fairly known in Germany. I mentioned the medical malpractice story earlier, but it seems there are always two cases in every episode. The second here is about incapacitation and develops into a medicide plot towards the end. The movies try to be really relevant, also have zero humor which is always bad, but the only effect this brings is that they appear full of themselves as the execution is not half as significant as the ambition. Well, I guess it has some humor, maybe the scenes with the interactions between the protagonist and her assistant, but I did not smile once there. All in all, not recommended.
