Marvel projects may be drawing a slew of high-profile actors to Australia, but it seems there are also local productions inversely capable of attracting MCU talent.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul’s Giancarlo Esposito is set for a lead role opposite star Carla Gugino in Cinemax’s straight-to-series drama Jett, from Gothika scribe Sebastian Gutierrez. Also cast as series regulars are Elena Anaya, Michael Aronov, Gaite Jansen, Chris Backus, Gil Bellows and Violet McGraw. Jodie Turner-Smith, Gentry White, Lucy Walters and Mustafa Shakir are set for recurring roles.
Esposito, who has a one-year deal on Jett, is coming off a two-season series regular turn on Better Call Saul, reprising his popular Breaking Bad character of Gustavo “Gus” Fring. That includes Season 3 and the upcoming fourth season, debuting Aug. 9, which already has been shot. I hear that while Esposito has has no deal in place beyond that, he could return to the AMC series should it get renewed for a fifth season, with the production schedule of Jett allowing for that.

ABC has handed out a script commitment for "The Next Chapter," a new single-camera comedy TV project from romance novel king Nicholas Sparks ("The Notebook," "The Longest Ride").
Based on a pitch from writer Austin Winsberg ("Gossip Girl"), the story follows a top-selling romance novelist who goes through a divorce and not only begins to question his belief in love, but must also learn to date again and live on his own while dealing with the pressures of his public persona.
The story will be loosely based on Sparks' new life as a single man as he separated from his wife of 25 years in January. Winsberg will pen the script and executive produce.
Sparks attempted television before with the Lifetime telemovie "Deliverance Creek" which did not go forward to series. The CW is also presently developing a TV reboot of "The Notebook".

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) handed out top film honors to the screenplays of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" Saturday night. On the television side, "Louie" and "True Detective" were favorites, winning two prizes each. Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" competed in the original category at the WGA Awards, while the Academy's Writers Branch, in a rare move outside of guild designation, deemed it adapted due to the fact that a scene from the feature script was the basis of a short film that screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. So if "The Imitation Game" is to go on to Oscar glory, it will have to compete with Chazelle's popular film for the first time this season at the Feb. 22 Academy Awards ceremony. Additionally, presumed Best Picture frontrunner "Birdman" was not eligible for WGA (making it still significant competition with "Grand Budapest" in the original category), nor was "The Theory of Everything,...

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America handed out their awards for achievements in writing for 2014, with The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game winning top honors, as was fully expected.
As I’ve already mentioned, the win here for The Grand Budapest Hotel doesn’t mean a thing, as it didn’t have to go up against its main competition, Birdman, which, if it had been eligible, would have easily taken the category this evening (the last six eligible screenplays to win both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards have gone on to win here). This category actually means a lot more for Boyhood, which has now had the last nail driven into its coffin with its loss here tonight. The least a film has won Best Picture with in the last 25 years (since the inception of the PGA awards) has been a WGA award (Braveheart), meaning Boyhood...

The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.
“2014 was a fantastic year for sound,” said Mpse president Frank Morrone. “The advent of new distribution channels, streaming services and gaming platforms is creating additional opportunities for sound artists to practice their craft beyond the traditional venues of film and television. This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. It was a pretty stellar year once again for cinematography and I don't envy the members of the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) their duty of narrowing it down to the top tier. Last year they didn't even bother narrowing — they settled on a whopping seven nominees. Why not? The more the merrier when the work is this good. No such luck this year, however, as we're back to five. And I must say, with two excellent pieces of work this year, I'm super bummed that Robert Elswit didn't make this list. I would have liked to see Bradford Young get the love, too, but I have no doubt he'll get his laurels in due time. "Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" remain strong as the only films so far to pick up nods from all guilds (we'll see how that shifts throughout the day). The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Including the release of his debut novel, The Notebook, in 1996, Nicholas Sparks has never published a book that didn’t become a best-seller, and nine of them have been adapted into movies. But for his television-producing debut, the author is overseeing someone else’s material: Melissa Carter’s Deliverance Creek. The Civil War–era revenge tale has been fashioned into a two-hour Lifetime movie starring Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under), and it is the first of five TV projects Sparks’s company has in the pipeline with cable networks. Two days before Deliverance Creek’s Saturday-night premiere, Sparks took a break from his busy schedule to chat with Vulture about his books, overcoming writer’s block, and the romance-lit capabilities of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.Deliverance Creek is a backdoor pilot, meaning it might still morph into a miniseries or something more. Does anybody feel weary of True Blood’s never-ending flow of new vampire characters? For a show that’s on its final leg, you’d think it would want to limit the number of characters it wants to focus on for its seventh and final season. Apparently not, however, as the HBO series has cast 90210’s Riley Smith as yet another good-looking vampire trying to get laid amongst other desires that aren’t nearly as important. It is hard enough keeping track of all the current and important characters, so here’s hoping this new guy feels like he’s actually contributing something to the season. If not, well, I’ll just rant about it later.
