With less than three weeks before U.S. theaters reopen August 21, major studios have slowed their PVOD releases. With the promise of reopening comes a shot at a profitable theatrical life, but the PVOD revolution continued apace with Liongate’s “The Secret: Dare to Dream.” It immediately reached as high as #1 on VOD charts on Friday.
The film is the very definition of a high-concept presale: A self-help book published in 2006, “The Secret” was an Oprah Winfrey Club title that sold 30 million copies. Directed by Andy Tennant (“Hitch”), it stars Katie Holmes and Josh Lucas. Gravitas Ventures and Roadside Attractions acquired it last November, and planned an April theatrical release. After the theaters closed, it moved to Roadside partner Lionsgate, which has a dedicated VOD division. It opened July 31 on PVOD at $19.99.
On FandangoNow, it landed immediately as #1 and holds the slot for the full week, despite having only three days of release.

For only the second time in the five months of parallel theatrical/Video on Demand releases, one film led grosses both in available theaters and on at least one home viewing chart. Dave Franco’s “The Rental” (IFC) grossed $404,000 in 250 theaters, two thirds of them drive-ins, to easily best several library titles made available this week. “The Karate Kid” (1984) was #2 with about half that gross from a larger number of theaters.
The horror thriller, starring Dan Stevens and Alison Brie, about two couples at a vacation rental facing unexpected terror, also placed #1 on Apple TV’s list of most viewed titles. With the film only released on Friday (too late for inclusion on other current charts), this is likely only a harbinger of more success as other lists are updated.
Unlike “Trolls World Tour” (Universal), the previous dual top placer, this is a standard price rental ($5.99-$6.99 depending on venue...

Over a decade ago, writer Ayn Carrillo-Gailey embarked on a quest to prove an ex-boyfriend wrong. She rolled out a list of lusty to-dos to show that she was not, as he had pronounced her to be, “pornphobic.” The result was the amusing (and enlightening) memoir “Pornology,” which has now spawned its own sanitized, if sweet rom-com movie adaptation. It’s a cute idea for a movie, the kind that follows a charming lead as they stumble their way into physical pleasure and other forms of personal enlightenment.
Filmmaking brothers Chris and Nick Riedell might not be breaking any new ground with their “A Nice Girl Like You,” but the duo at least had the foresight to cast Lucy Hale as Carrillo-Gailey’s movie stand-in, a straight-laced classical violinist who isn’t so much afraid of sex as she is unsure of how to make it work for her. Lucy Hale had quite the sex education while filming her new film, A Nice Girl Like You. Today, the Katy Keene alum virtually stopped by Daily Pop and opened up to E!'s own Justin Sylvester about embracing her sexy new role. In A Nice Girl Like You, Lucy plays inhibited Lucy Neal who decides to educate herself about sex after being dumped by her boyfriend. Although the 31-year-old actress was "embarrassed and blushing" when she first read the script, she knew she had to be a part of this project. Why? "I play a girl named Lucy Neal, which is crazy. It was written as that Lucy Neal, Lucy Hale, I was like, 'This is meant to be,'" she told Justin. "But, the whole time I was...

"I made a 'sex to-do list.'" Vertical Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for a spunky sex comedy titled A Nice Girl Like You, adapted from the book titled "Pornology" by Ayn Carrillo. This stars Lucy Hale as a Harvard grad who is dumped by her boyfriend for being too "pornophobic." The film follows her hilarious explorations facing her sexual fears after she decides to learn about all she hasn't yet experienced. Also stars Mindy Cohn, Leonidas Gulaptis, Adhir Kalyan, Stephen Friedrich, Skye P. Marshall, Leah McKendrick, Jina Panebianco, Nadia Quinn, and Jackie Cruz. It is way too easy to cast an extremely attractive man opposite an extremely attractive woman and make it all seem like their connection is something oh so special. Plus this looks surprisingly tame for a film about sexual exploration... Go figure. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Chris & Nick Riedell's A Nice Girl Like You,...

Rules of Engagement alum Adhir Kalyan will play Tanner in the hybrid comedy from Gail Berman’s The Jackal Group, and CBS TV Studios. He replaces Raymond Ablack, who originally was cast in the role.
A decision was made during production week to take the character in a slightly reimagined direction, leading to the recasting. It is part of the normal pilot creative process that involves script and cast tweaks.
Written by Mike Metz, directed by Mark Cendrowski and showrun by Joseph Port and Joe Wiseman, To Whom It May Concern centers on Evan (Angarano) who, with the help of his group of friends, sets out to accomplish a list of challenges he wrote for himself years ago in an effort to turn around his banal life.
