"Metamorphosis" chronologically documents the changes Madrid's emblematic Plaza de España undergoes over three years. However, this is no ordinary documentary, it is a unique hybrid - a documentary musical. Singers perform in the midst of this changing landscape bestowing the film with its surrealistic tone making it unlike any other existing documentary. Three years of filming have provided plenty of variety... whether its an episode filmed inside the tunnels in construction; trees being uprooted from the Plaza and moved to a nearby park where they are replanted; dogs being taken for a walk on the day the Plaza is officially opened by the City Mayor; statues of nymphs being hoisted into a truck and taken away; or even sopranos vocally battling with diggers. In the midst of filming the Covid-19 pandemic happened, marking a clear visual "before" (without masks) and "after" (with masks) to its chronology. The film's pandemic scene lasts for one minute and plays out in total silence as a tribute to the people who lost their lives to Covid. Ultimately, "Metamophosis" is a musical testament to the resilience of Madrid's workers and residents who battled on throughout confinement to build a new space for the city to enjoy.
