Two of-the-moment actors are leading a package headed to the Cannes market next week. Greta Lee, star of last year’s Oscar-nominated “Past Lives” and a SAG nominee for “The Morning Show,” and Kingsley Ben-Adir, whose starring vehicle “Bob Marley: One Love” exceeded box office expectations and who played Malcolm X in the three-time Oscar-nominated “One Night in Miami…,” are teaming with the reliable workhorse director Louis Leterrier in a new science fiction project called “11817.”

Once again. “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) ($5.99) is #1 at iTunes and Google Play, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $19.99 (Universal) is #1 at Vudu.
Like most weeks, Netflix’s top 10 movie list is topsy-turvy. New at #1 is “Run Rabbit Run,” an Australian horror film the streamer acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. It stars “Succession” actress Sarah Snook as a fertility doctor who notices her daughter’s strange behavior.
Beyond that, “Mario” is in two second-place spots while “Fast X” is #2 at Vudu, helped by its $19.99 price. “The Covenant” (MGM) is #3 at iTunes, “The Machine” (Sony) at $19.99 #3 at Vudu, with “Fast X” taking third at Google Play.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

Writer Matthew Robinson is heading to a galaxy far, far away.
After fleshing out the world that never lies in “The Invention of Lying” and the monster apocalypse in “Love and Monsters,” Matthew Robinson is penning the script for Patty Jenkins’ “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron,” which is currently scheduled to be released on Dec. 22, 2023.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film will loosely be based on the “X-wing” novels that were released by Bantam Spectra and Del Rey between 1996-2012. Jenkins’ film will usher in a new generation of X-wing pilots trying to earn their wings. Disney declined to comment on Robinson’s involvement.
Lucasfilm revealed that “Rogue Squadron” was in development during Disney’s investor day in December 2020. Jenkins, best known for directing “Wonder Woman” and its sequel, posted a video on Twitter where she revealed her fighter pilot father inspired her to join the project.

The latest in our series of writers sticking up for maligned films is a defence of Brad Bird’s imaginative sci-fi adventure with George Clooney
In October 1998, a blisteringly loud Swedish hardcore band called Refused released an album titled The Shape Of Punk To Come. Full of screamed call-to-arms lyrics, it was a brilliant, brink-of-the-millennium manifesto for what tomorrow could look like, imagining not just the strides the punk genre might soon take, but the ones society might be capable of, with a little resolve, a little invention. It quickly became tinged with tragedy: within a year of its release, punk experienced a major mainstream moment, with frat-party pop mutators of the genre such as Blink-182 taking over MTV. The shape of punk to come, as Refused predicted it, never came to pass, meaning today it exists as a glimpse into what could have been.

The latest in our series of writers sticking up for reviled films is a defense of the ‘toyetic’ action fantasy flop that puts monsters in … trucks
There is nothing pure about Monster Trucks. It is not a work of art born from some noble truth. It is a product – brightly-colored content meant to generate toys. The idea originated around 2013 when Adam Goodman, then president of Paramount’s Motion Picture Group, watched his four-year-old son playing with toy trucks. By 2014, Paramount issued a press release calling their new title Monster Trucks a “movie which has great toyetic appeal.” This unapologetic ploy to sell plastic made for an ignoble start to Monster Trucks, and things wouldn’t improve. The general concept – monster trucks that have real, but friendly, monsters inside them – didn’t inspire much confidence outside of “toyetic appeal,” either.

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

The original Dora the Explorer was synonymous with learning by repetition. We’ll begin with a hat tip to that educational cartoon – the inspiration for this fabulous family film – and say, Dora and the Lost City of Gold is estupendo! Can you say estupendo?!
Young Dora (Madelyn Miranda), her vivid imagination and her cousin Diego have enjoyed an idyllic (and mildly treacherous) childhood roaming free in the Peruvian jungle surrounding their isolated home. When Diego’s parents relocate to the city Dora’s imaginary talking map, backpack and monkey friend Boots fill the hole her companion has left in her life. And help her evade Swiper the light-fingered fox.
As Dora grows, so does her appetite for adventure. Ten years pass and her indulgent parents become increasingly concerned about the risks she takes (and her tendency to narrate). A thrilling discovery leads them to make a tough decision about her future.

When “Dora the Explorer” made her debut on Nickelodeon in 2000, she not only became the first animated Latina character in a leading role but also birthed what would become the longest-running American TV show that featured characters speaking Spanish. (The show is still running on Nickelodeon with new episodes).
Nineteen years later, Dora gets the live-action treatment in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” and despite an awkward first act, the film harkens back to the family-adventure genre that today’s parents can recall from their own childhoods.
Dora and her parents (Michael Peña and Eva Longoria) have lived in the jungles of South America for all of Dora’s life. The jungle is her home, her school and her playground, and like many young teenagers she runs through her life documenting everything with a GoPro strapped on, speaking to an invisible audience about the wonders of exploring the rain forest.

Iron Fist’s Jessica Henwick and Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien will serve as the headliners for sci-fi film Monster Problems.
Monster Problems, a sci-fi film project in the pipeline at contemporary-aimed studio subdivision Paramount Players, appears to be putting a romantic spin on the crowded post-apocalyptic genre. Indeed, it's a coming-of-age tale that centers on a young man searching for the girl of his dreams while navigating a world that, as the title implies, is overrun by monsters.
Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) will co-star in Monster Problems alongside Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), as first reported by THR. O’Brien is set as the film's protagonist, with Henwick set to play the dream girl for whom he'll brave a global mutant apocalypse.
The film will be directed by Michael Matthews (Five Fingers for Marseilles), working off a screenplay by Matthew Robinson, updated from a previous screenplay by Brian Duffield.

At the risk of revving up a chorus of ‘Hollywood has officially run out of ideas,’ Mattel and Warner Bros announced they are partnering in a movie based on Hot Wheels, the toyline of small cars that run on those orange tracks. It’s the second property Mattel has long tried to turn in a movie, and set new versions at Warner Bros. The other is Barbie, which has seen Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway drop in and out before Sony exited. They are trying again with Margot Robbie. Let’s see how all this turns out: the last attempt to get kids excited about a car movie was Monster Trucks, which got stuck in the mud. But those Lego movies sure struck gold.

Imagine, if you can, a “Transformers” movie in which the plot is coherent, the robots feel like characters (as opposed to gleaming CG creations), and the action is staged and edited clearly enough to follow. After five rock ’em, sock ’em blockbuster features, it has become clear that audiences would never get such a film as long as Michael Bay occupied the director’s chair, and though he should certainly be credited for proving that a Hasbro toy line could support a massive global franchise, “Bumblebee” is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along.

"Who are all these people?" Nothing like a funny short film set in a romantic city to brighten up your day! Ciao Lola is a short comedy made by producer / filmmaker Oscar Boyson, running only six minutes in total. It was filmed in Venice back in 2016, and is now available to watch online. The short stars Jane Levy as Lola and Thomas McDonell as Peter, a couple visiting the gorgeous Italian city. There's some unexplained subtext to this that isn't implicit, but you'll figure it out as it goes along. I like the playfulness of this, and all the lovely shots of Venice. Enjoy! Original description from Vimeo: "I made this short film in Venice in August of 2016." A guy tries to keep up with his girlfriend who clearly adjusted too well in the city. Exclusive: Injured MacGyver stunt coordinator Justin Sundquist has come out of a medically induced coma and was removed today from intensive care. The news comes a week after he suffered a serious head injury in Atlanta in a stunt fall from the back of a tractor trailer on the set of the CBS drama series.
“He’s not out of the woods yet,” said veteran stuntman Spiro Razatos, a longtime friend of the family, “but he’s out of ICU and knows what’s going on. Much as he dominated Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation in April, Mission: Impossible – Fallout star Tom Cruise loomed large over the studio’s CineEurope show today.
When Mary Daily, Paramount President of International Theatrical Marketing, went to toss off to President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane early on, there appeared to be a missed cue. After a few uncomfortable seconds, Lalo Schifrin’s music started and Cruise appeared on screen, saying he had Viane with him to grill him “on our release dates.”
In the video, Cruise then addressed the audience: “We’ve done everything we possibly can to make this the best Mission yet. We’ve worked harder than ever before to make sure this film represents the ultimate in-movie entertainment and gets people excited to go to your theaters and have the most authentic experience possible.”

MaryAnn’s quick take… Hollywood finds a way. To keep telling the same stories over and over again, that is. There’s too much going on in Fallen Kingdom, and yet somehow not enough, either. Still: dinosaurs! I’m “biast” (pro): love love love love love the original trilogy

For the second time in the history of Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament, Disney’s Lucasfilm prevails with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the eighth movie (really ninth, if you count Rogue One) in a 41-year old sci-fi franchise that beat several superhero movies and some truly big family breakouts including Beauty and the Beast, Despicable Me 3 and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Similar to how J.J. Abrams climbed the ladder to cut the net for 2015 profit champ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rian Johnson does the honors here for Last Jedi.

Paramount Pictures has faced a tougher time than most studios of late. What, though, does it have planned next?
In any given year, the top ten highest grossing films at the worldwide box office are mostly made up of franchise films or adaptations of existing intellectual property. Around the world, the movie business is a franchise game right now, and of the traditional 'big six' studios, Paramount Pictures seems to be falling behind its rivals.

“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (Sony) easily bested all comers on its fourth weekend, and sustained the 2018 box office upswing. The shockingly successful reboot is just $50 million away from landing in the top-five grossers of 2017. A $350-million total won’t come near to challenging the $600 million-plus final tally for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which is 2017’s top performer both domestic and globally, with a worldwide total of over $1.3 billion.
A weekend result that puts the Dwayne Johnson family fantasy $15-million ahead of the latest “Star Wars” juggernaut suggests the days may be waning for “Star Wars” as the dominant franchise far above all the rest. For the first time, its fifth weekend fell below the comparable “Rogue One” last year.
And yet overall grosses are up — if not at the level of last week’s 20 per cent increase. This weekend’s overall results are close to a carbon copy...

The year saw a lift from November box office grosses as this past month was only the third time ever November receipts totaled more than $1 billion, led by Disney and Marvel's release of Thor: Ragnarok, which delivered nearly 28% of the month's total. Heading into the November, 2017 was trailing 2016 by 5.3%, but coming out of it this year was 4.4% behind 2016 thanks to what was the third largest November ever and a 5.1% improvement over November last year. Disney led the month — after not having released a film since Cars 3 in mid-June — with two new wide releases in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok and Pixar's Coco, both of which have been overwhelmingly successful. Ragnarok was the month's highest grossing title with $281.7 million and Coco delivered the fourth largest three- and five-day Thanksgiving weekend opening ever and generated over $82 million in its first nine days in release. Coco's total has since climbed over $135 million domestically and over $400 million globally,...

“Daddy’s Home 2” opens today with advance estimates around $20 million. That’s a modest number, but for Paramount that’s great news: Not since “Transformers: The Last Knight” in June has it seen a movie open to as much as $8 million, nor grossed above $18 million. The $69 million-budgeted comedy is a sequel to the original that grossed $150 million two years ago. (In this case, #2 at the box office was great: #1 was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”) The sequel reprises directing, writing and leads (Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell), with Mel Gibson and John Lithgow added as their intrusive fathers.

In “Abundant Acreage Available,” Amy Ryan plays a tough-minded woman who reunites with her brother (Terry Kinney) to bury their father on the farm where he raised them. As they argue about where to lay him to rest, another set of siblings from their father’s past show up to further complicate matters, laying claim to the land and injecting themselves into the center of this parochial setting.
Ryan’s character remains a fierce, defiant voice who pushes back against her brother’s religious convictions and the interlopers who question her solitary way of life. It’s a commanding performance that dominates this quiet, understated movie, and it makes you wonder why Ryan — an Oscar nominee for “Gone Baby Gone” — doesn’t land such impressive leading roles more often.

Paramount Pictures is Peeved About J.J. Abrams Ditching Them Again To Direct Another Star Wars Movie
J.J. Abrams already ditched Paramount Pictures once to make Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Now he's doing it again to direct Episode IX, and the studio is kinda pissed off.
Paramount Pictures has had a terrible year of movies with films such as Monster Trucks, Rings, Baywatch, Transformers: The Last Knight, and mother! all underperforming at the box office.
The studio's new CEO Jim Gianopulos had one positive thing going for him when he stepped in to lead the studio... J.J. Abrams. Paramount has been the filmmaker's home since 2006 and Gianopulos was hoping that Abrams would get back to work and direct a film for them. Those hopes were dashed when Abrams signed on with Lucasfilm to direct Star Wars: Episode IX. Now the studio is forced to wait until Abrams is free again. The film is going to keep him tied up for at least two years.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
In honor of Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!,” which just became one of the only movies to ever earn an “F” Cinemascore rating, what is the craziest movie that a major Hollywood studio has released this century?
Joshua Rothkopf (@joshrothkopf), Time Out New York
Talk about a self-answering question. Unless you can point to another movie that brews such an aggressive whirlwind of psychosexual anxiety, starring the biggest star in the world (who is also romantically involved with the director), then we’re talking about “mother!” I’m sure you’ve got “The Wolf of Wall Street” at the ready as an alternative, but how crazy is that film, given...

Nearly every release from the studio has bombed at the box office, starting with “Monster Trucks” in January and continuing through “Ghost in the Shell,” “Baywatch,” and the franchise-low totals for “Transformers: The Last Knight.” We can now add Darren Aronofsky’s “mother!” to the list after it grossed only $7.5 million in over 2,000 theaters, making it the lowest nationwide opening ever for star Jennifer Lawrence. To make matters worse, the film became only the 12th title in history to earn an “F” CinemaScore from audiences, which doesn’t bode well for its total gross.

But while “mother!” may represent a financial disappointment for Paramount, it certainly marks a creative victory. No movie this year is earning as much of a response from critics and audiences as this one.

When it comes to the summer movie season, late July is the new August. Now that blockbusters jockey for attention in early May, we already feel wrung out by the barrage of spectacle. And with that, an exciting new box office trend has begun to make itself known: franchise fatigue, with a twist. Audiences seem to be rejecting force-fed franchises, and instead opt to check out original material.
The numbers don’t lie. While films designed to launch brand-new franchises like “The Mummy” and “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” burned out at the domestic box office, original offerings are making big bucks. Even more compelling? Those would-be one-offs could start their own franchises.
This past weekend was won by a pair of original projects that couldn’t be more different: Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic “Dunkirk” and Malcolm D. Lee’s uproarious girls-gone-wild comedy “Girls Trip.
