MaryAnn’s quick take… Upends expectations, demythologizes the mythos, and takes an iconic series in a bold new direction with a story full of humor, courage, and dazzling imagery. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a huge Star Wars fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

This is not going to go the way you think,” Luke Skywalker says to… well, someone who needs to hear it. Someone whose arrogance is borne of shortsightedness and narrow expectations. And this is also Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s word of warning to the audience. To us. This is the Star Wars movie, after all, from writer-director Rian Johnson, the guy who gave us The Brothers Bloom, a tricksy movie about con artists that knows we go into a movie about con artists with certain assumptions about what we’re about to see.

Mark Hamill admits he was told Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker’s father way in advance, but he wasn’t allowed to tell any of his castmates that this was the case. “Star Wars” fans will remember the very famous line “No, I am your father,” from “The Empire Strikes Back” and Hamill, 66, insisted it was […]...

Almost 40 years ago, long before electronic computers gave rise to the Internet as we know it, Empire Strikes Back delivered one of the most shocking, groundbreaking twists in film history: Darth Vader was, in fact, the father of Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill’s farm-boy-turned-Jedi who continues to be a fixture of the Star Wars universe.
And though the entire fanbase is currently walking on eggshells to avoid spoilers for The Last Jedi – don’t worry, this article is completely free from plot details, but we will point you in the direction of Wgtc’s official review – Star Wars legend James Earl Jones has recalled a simpler time when the intricacies of a film weren’t analyzed ad nauseam leading up to release.

James Earl Jones wasn't buying it.
When the beloved actor read his script for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Jones thought for sure Darth Vader was putting Luke Skywalker on when he made the huge reveal.

The cast and creators of Star Wars: The Last Jedi had a whole lot to say in our new cover story – from writer/director Rian Johnson's revelation that he considered making Luke Skywalker blind to Adam Driver's confession of total emo ignorance to Daisy Ridley's declaration that she was done with the saga after the next movie (she's since attempted to walk that one back). But our in-depth interviews for the article yielded even more revelations that didn't quite fit. Here's what we learned.

It’s been 710 days since we walked out of The Force Awakens, dying to know what was next for Rey, Finn, Poe and the gang – and more importantly, what Luke Skywalker was doing holed up on some island planet.
Now, in just 17 and a bit days we’ll find out where the Star Wars saga is headed next: who lives, who dies, who turns to the light or dark side and what happens in the ongoing conflict between the Resistance and the sinister First Order. But wouldn’t you like to have an element of surprise when you settle down for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and those words start scrolling through space?
Mark Hamill certainly would, as he recently Tweeted the following:
The #WaitForVIII is nearly over! Let me take this opportunity to personally ask you to keep all that happens in #TheLastJedi a secret for as long as is humanly possible.

Even if you don’t know Star Wars, you know the end of The Empire Strikes Back. The twist that Darth Vader didn’t kill Luke Skywalker’s father but actually is his father came as such an earth-shattering shock when the movie first released in 1980 that the moment has sunk deep into pop culture (even if it’s usually misquoted). For it to work so well, though, the twist needed to remain as secret as possible beforehand. In fact, even Mark Hamill was kept in the dark.
Speaking to the official Star Wars website to celebrate his 66th birthday yesterday, Hamill revealed that he had no idea about the twist until he was due to shoot the scene. And when he did find out, it came with a stern warning…
“They kept that line secret: ‘I am your father.’” What was in the script was already a fantastic twist.

When he’s not being badgered about Rey’s parentage or the identity of the last Jedi, you’ll often find writer-director Rian Johnson fielding questions about the tone of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and, more specifically, how it compares to that of Empire Strikes Back.
Much like Irvin Kershner’s genre classic before it, The Last Jedi is the second part of a full-blown Star Wars trilogy, finding itself sandwiched between The Force Awakens and the so-far untitled (and as of Tuesday evening, director-less) Episode IX. And like most blockbuster movie sequels before it, Rian Johnson’s December tentpole has been pitched as a slightly darker experience than its next of kin, thanks in large part to the escalating tensions between the First Order and the Resistance.

Though we do know a few bits and pieces about the plot of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, any specific story details outside of what we learned from the first trailer for the movie are still under wraps. That’s something Disney and Lucasfilm are obviously hoping will continue until they’re good and ready to divulge some more details, but a Japanese promotional flyer for the film may have beaten them to it.
The leaflet popped up over on Star Wars News Net, who’ve also provided a rough English translation of what it says. Some of the plot points are common knowledge by now, but there are also a few intriguing new teases relating to General Leia’s mission, Kylo Ren completely giving himself over to the dark side and more. Most interesting, however, is the promise that “the most shocking truth in Star Wars history” will be revealed in The Last Jedi.

Disney screened footage of the film, and Los Angeles Times reporter Daniel Miller was there and relayed some information abut what he saw, most importantly being "Luke's first words."
At the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley) traverses a treacherous path up a rigid mountainside to finally come face-to-face with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in his secluded residence, she reaches out to hand him his lightsaber, and we are ended with a cliffhanger just as bad as The Walking Dead left us with at the end of Season 6. This isn’t fake news. Periscope Entertainment has announced today that David Guy Levy will direct their upcoming psychological sci-fi thriller “The Mandela Effect,” which is written by Steffen Schlachtenhaufen. The film “a man who becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something much larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself.”
The title refers to the strange phenomena of mass groups of people collectively “remembering” events or things that never happened. The theory pulls its name from the bizarre case of many people believing that Nelson Mandela died in prison — going so far as to “recall” clips from a televised funeral — though the civil rights leader actually died in 2013. Other examples of the so-called effect include misquoted movie lines (“Luke, I am your father” is a biggie, so is ““Life is like a box of chocolates,...

Sploid points us to this series of videos from a YouTuber that features cats acting out the "I am your father" scene from The Empire Strikes Back, the shower scene from Psycho, and a couple more. Friday’s latest plot twist in this year’s Presidential campaign – the announcement that the FBI was reopening its investigation into Hillary’s e-mails based on some suspicious correspondence found on Anthony Weiner’s computer – had all of us spinning our heads like Linda Blair in The Exorcist…sans pea soup vomit, I hope.

Not every movie -- not even every good movie -- is worth an immediate Blu-ray investment, but you're going to want to clear a sexy spot in your house for Ryan Reynolds's "Deadpool." The top R-rated movie around the world is out on DVD and Blu-ray May 10. We could list the Blu-ray features, but it's much more fun to get them from the Merc with a Mouth himself:
"Regression"
Emma Watson and Ethan Hawke star in this psychological horror film from writer/director
Alejandro Amenabar ("The Others"). The film releases on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and On Demand on May 10.
"Where to Invade Next"
Michael Moore's latest incendiary documentary/opinion piece, this time about the American military,...

Could have been assembled entirely from clips from other movies — mostly the Star Wars prequels — and would have been better if it had been. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): never hopeful about based-on-videogame movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ah, so there’s my answer, once again.
I was wondering how that standard movie philosophy still applied to me. You know, that standard movie philosophy that is not only the stuff but the actual stuffing of 99 percent of wish-fulfillment genre fantasy movies for decades now. I approached Ratchet & Clank with great anticipation. Can I do anything? Can I be anything I want to be? Am I destined for greatness, to save the world or even the whole galaxy even if I am a foolhardy, thoughtless, unfocused screwup with almost nothing to my name but maybe some undisciplined smarts and outsized aspirations to grandeur?...

Heavily spoiler-laden script rundown purports to reveal why Rey is so strong with the Force, and the return of Hayden Christensen as ghost of Anakin Skywalker
The full plot of the next Star Wars movie and the true identity of Daisy Ridley’s mysterious Rey have reportedly been revealed by a Reddit user who claims to have read the film’s script.
The heavily spoiler-laden script rundown, for the follow-up to Jj Abrams’s blockbuster The Force Awakens, explains why the staff-wielding space scavenger is strong with the Force, and features one major revelation that, if true, would be as shocking a plot twist as Darth Vader’s “I am your father” moment in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.

Mainstream Spanish films are thriving as TV broadcasters fill the gap in public funding. But at what cost to auteur film-making? Could a new Pedro Almodovar emerge now?Spain territory focusSpain focus: new talent, the magnificent sevenSpain focus: hot projects, big name draws
The Spanish film industry has started 2016 on an optimistic note. Emilio Martinez-Lazaro’s broad comedy Spanish Affair 2 (Ocho Apellidos Catalanes), the sequel to the all-time local hit Spanish Affair, was the top grossing film of 2015, taking $34.7m (€32m), and Fernando Gonzalez Molina’s romantic period drama Palm Trees In The Snow, released on December 25, out-performed Star Wars: The Force Awakens on its second weekend on release and has garnered more than $17m to date.

Since the days of yore (also known as 1977), the Star Wars franchise has centred on its big shocking moments. The first trilogy had the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi, “I am your father”, and then the “there is another Skywalker” sibling reveal. The prequels tried to ape this with Qui-Gon’s death, the Padme/decoy thing and the massive Order 66 mega-reveal.
Following this grand tradition, the Force Awakens gave us two big surprises – the twist that Kylo Ren is Ben Solo, and the shock of him killing his own dad. Star Wars: Episode VIII is bound to follow suit, throwing in scares, surprises and shocking twists at regular intervals.
From what J.J. Abrams’ showed audiences in Episode VII, it’s possible – with a bit off guesswork – to try and extrapolate what the big upcoming twists might be. Here the character deaths, shock allegiance changes and surprising backstory reveals that the...

As with The Force Awakens, Disney have mostly kept schtum on plot details and specific character information ahead of the release of Anthology movie Rogue One. It’s to be expected, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be tolerated silently.
But even with information at a premium, one exciting prospect is that this movie’s timeline can allow for a legendary character to make an appearance: namely Darth Vader.
Not having him play some part would effectively be like having cinema history’s most iconic character at your disposal and keeping him on ice needlessly. It’s just unfathomable. But let’s be honest, Disney are no fools: they know the brand power of iconic characters after decades of marketing and merchandising wins, and they know that the Rogue One hype train would be fuelled massively at even the merest hint that Vader will turn up.

Newly released deleted scenes from Mrs. Doubtfire casts a different tone on the beloved comedy. Robin Williams' titular role as a father who pretends to be a maid in order to spend time with his children after splitting from his wife is remembered for its over-the-top comedic moments. But a new set of deleted scenes reveals the true undertone of the film: a father desperate to remain in his children's lives. YouTube user Matthew Keys posted three emotional deleted scenes from the film, all featuring Williams' character struggling to be a responsible father in the face of divorce. In the first scene,...

There is so much to Darth Vader that makes him endlessly memorable: the mask, that deep and unforgettable voice (thanks, James Earl Jones), his laboured breathing, and all those famously quotable quotes (“No, I am your father!”). The most iconic villain in cinema history and the most popular character to featured in the Star Wars saga to date – or, at least, the most important – his silhouette alone is enough to instil fear into the hearts of an entire generation of movie-goers.
And all this from a bad guy whose face you barely ever see! Even the prequel movies, which went back and chronicled the events that led Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side couldn’t kill Darth Vader’s impact. Heck, despite being dead he’s still playing a role in the new Star Wars trilogy, his legacy giving inspiration to a new intergalactic menace.
Given how popular Darth Vader is,...

J.J. Abrams is seemingly harboring an inkling of regret now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has called time on his brief stint in the director’s chair, meaning he’ll now switch gears to executive produce Episode VIII and Episode IX – to be directed by Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow, respectively.
Nevertheless, by all accounts, Abrams has teed up many character arcs for both Johnson and Trevorrow to continue, particularly given how The Force Awakens largely skits around revealing the origins stories behind its three nominal heroes: Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron, the best X-Wing pilot in the galaxy.
More News From The Web
However, coming out of Abrams’ blockbuster, many fans felt frustrated that the director omitted the origins of each character. And though one could argue that ruining the mystique of Rey, Finn and Poe too early would negatively undermine their stellar first impressions, rest assured, screenwriter...

One man on why Star Wars means so much to him, and why it continues to matter...
It's a surreal and exhilarating time to be a Star Wars fan.
After Revenge Of The Sith closed off the prequel trilogy, many of us said our bittersweet farewells to the franchise expecting little else in the future, which in its own way brought a sense of relief. Despite the many enjoyable parts within the three new movies, we had witnessed George Lucas show a previously absent cynicism about the story and its construction in everything from dispelling the mythical beauty of the force with those wretched midi-chlorians, to confessing that he'd padded his original story idea that would have filled a single film, across three.
He also made it quite clear that Anakin Skywalker did not like sand, not one tiny bit.
Yet many of us still thrilled at...
