Shane Gillis drinks brews and poops in the customer restroom in the trailer for “Tires,” his workplace comedy series premiering May 23 on Netflix.
The six-episode scripted show follows Will (Steven Gerben), “the nervous and unqualified heir to an auto repair chain” who “attempts to turn his father’s business around despite constant torture from his cousin and now employee, Shane (Gillis),” according to the logline.
“We can sit in here and sulk in the dark, or we can crawl our asses out in the sun and sell some fucking tires!” Gillis says in the trailer in an attempt to motivate the staff of Valley Forge Automotive Center.
Additional cast members include Chris O’Connor, Kilah Fox, Stavros Halkias and guest star Andrew Schulz.
Gillis co-created the series with Gerben and John McKeever, who, with Gillis, forms one-half of the sketch comedy duo Gilly and Keeves. McKeever also serves as director of “Tires.

In the weeks leading up to Shane Gillis’ “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut, one major question dominated conversations about his controversial appearance: Would he address his firing from the show?
Gillis was briefly hired as a member of the “SNL” ensemble cast in 2019, but was removed from the show before appearing in a single episode once old clips of him making racially charged jokes began to resurface. His profile has grown considerably in the years that followed, and he released the popular Netflix special “Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs” in 2023. His success prompted him to be invited back to host “SNL” this year, news that pleased his defenders who saw his firing as an overreaction and disappointed those who called for his removal in the first place.
When Gillis took the stage in Studio 8H, he subtly addressed the saga before quickly moving on to safer topics.

Comic Shane Gillis debuted as Saturday Night Live host by first joking about his extremely brief stint on the late night show back in 2019 that ended after controversial comments of his from the year prior resurfaced.
“Yeah. I’m here,” Gillis began his monologue. “Most of you probably have no idea who I am. I was actually fired from this show awhile ago. But, you know, don’t look that up! Please, if you don’t know who I am, please don’t Google that. It’s fine, don’t even worry about it.

Comedian Shane Gillis has returned to host “SNL” after being fired from the cast in 2019 for having made racist, homophobic and misogynistic remarks.

Comedian Shane Gillis will be making his long-in-coming Saturday Night Live debut this weekend, and it wouldn’t be the worst idea to keep expectations from soaring to impossible heights.
At least that seems to be the gist of his new SNL promo, which shows Gillis rehearsing a decidedly underwhelming monologue loaded with hackneyed, anything-but-controversial gags. “A new Planet of the Apes is coming out,” he cracks as cast members Sarah Sherman and Marcello Hernández look on. “It’s gonna be bananas.”
Gillis’ SNL appearance is already one of the more unusual bookings in the show’s history, coming about five years after the comic was hired as a featured player, but was fired before making his debut after videos surfaced in which he used an anti-Asian racial slur during his stand-up act (“always a Mad TV guy anyway.” he tweeted after he was let go).

It’s been a strange few weeks for Saturday Night Live. Two weeks ago, during a night hosted by Madame Web actress Dakota Johnson, cast members Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman distanced themselves from Dave Chappelle when the transphobic comedian crashed SNL’s goodbye segment at show’s end. Then, last week, the show laundered Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s racist Civil War denialism. Now, America’s premier sketch-comedy series has decided to welcome Shane Gillis to host.
Back in 2019, SNL announced that Gillis would be joining the cast of the show.
