Part spoiler maybe, but If you haven't watched the episode, there's a warning
joshboyjcjc16 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Surprisingly a funny and pretty emotional episode. The way they handle the topics that I feel like were a little forced was done in a classic seth way. It was emotional, and humourous. Dennis was an interesting character, it's a shame the wish power wasn't brought up much, since it's never discussed much unfortunately. I feel like they could have built more on it, like how people like John and his dad can bring things to life, but people like Donnie in ted 1 couldn't. Maybe it's a Bennet family gift, but who knows. But still, a decent episode, handled the topics in a good way but still kept that classic seth humor.

Curveball from the rest of the show
Reviewer-74473822 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Summary: This episode is a complete curveball from the rest of the series. At the beginning of the episode the family is getting ready to go to church but Matty refuses to go, and feels attacked by the rest of his family for his decision. His family was pushing for him to go because Susan would be singing and had a solo. When Matty and Susan get in bed together Susan completely ignores Matty which keeps him from sleeping. Matty then gets up from his bed to look out the window, he sees a shooting star, and wishes that his childhood toy Dennis the dump truck, would come alive and have is back in family argument. This is where the episode becomes very different. Dennis turns to be out a stereotypical conservative who makes racial jokes and jokes about sexuality. This upsets Blaire which causes her to revoke her previous agreement with Susan to keep her sexuality a secret until after the holidays, Blaire gets up and confesses to everyone at the table that she is a lesbian. Blaire then storms off, and Susan begins to get upset because all she had wanted was to have a good Christmas. After Ted and John convince Blaire to apologize to Matty, Dennis goes at Blaire one again with Matty sitting next to him silent. Blaire storms off crying, which upsets Matty and he apologizes to her this time asking her and Sarah to stay for the holidays. Matty returns to Dennis in the basement where it is revealed that Dennis himself, the stereotypical conservative anti-lgbtq dump truck is actually gay. Matty hugs Dennis and Dennis leaves at the end of the episode. The family opens presents and Matty gave something very special to Susan, a karaoke machine so she can sing to the family.

Review: overall, an ok episode. It wasn't too funny which mostly defeats the purpose of the Ted series but on the other hand it shows a growth in Matty's character with him paying more attention to Susan, and accepting Blaire's sexuality.

Episode 6

Warning: Spoilers
Susan and Matty are clearly supposed to be a Boston-take on Archie and Edith from All in the Family, but we finally got a very deep substance matter for them to go through. Not only was it just a few jokes here and there but there were serious moments and the episode revolved around Matty's old time ways and not accepting his niece's sexuality.

It wasn't the funniest episode for sure, and the stuff with the truck was a little weird, but this felt like a genuine take on how people would deal with this in 1993 and it made for good TV. This was a little more important content and I think they handled it well.

Conservatives are big mad

And I love it! Great episode, Seth MacFarlane has always spoken about diversity, gay rights in all of his shows and In this episode he just proves again, it doesn't freakin matter who you love. Clearly everyone will have their opinions, but how about everyone just focus on their own lives instead of trying to control everyone else's? It was a heartwarming Christmas episode that needed to be told. I found myself getting emotional about a story of a truck that comes to life. I'd say if you can do that then you did storytelling right. Stay mad people, we will continue to be happy, minding our business, loving who we love.

Do Not Read These Troll Reviews

Warning: Spoilers
Probably the most interesting episode out of the bunch. Hilarious all around, and an incredible ending punchline that only salivates all the jokes and lines that existed before it. Love how modern day this episode feels without losing the charm of the 90's setting Seth has created here. A successful episode all around.

I can understand why people would find this offensive, but most of what is addressed here feels genuine and more thoughtful than most series that discuss topics such as politics, identity within the same episode. I can name so many idiot boomers of Seth's era that can have these jokes be at the expense of others without much self reflection and thought, but that is not what's delivered here. I am hoping for a second season that delivers episodes early as strong.

'Pushy' aka 'Saying truth I don't like cos I was pushed into believing in a singular interpretation of a 1000 year old book'
taylorabrahamse21 February 2024
This Ted series has been fabulous, start to finish. Where it could have risked getting stale was by not challenging the toxic 70's achetype the parents embody, but they do - and they do it surprisingly quickly into the series run. Blair may be a 90's kid, but she's as progressive as at least a 2010's one. In this episode we get to see Maddy really have to confront his preconceptions - and its also a heavy-handed metaphor for extremist points of view getting exacerbated by surrounding yourself with yes-men... aka, far right news media embodied in a anthropomorphic toy firetruck. My only wish was to have someone besides Seth voice the firetruck just to make the most of the opportunity, but besides that it was pitch perfect as the rest of the season. I would have considered it the weakest ep overall just by a hair if it wasn't for how heartwarming the ending is with the karaoke machine - now its probably my second favourite behind episode 5. Its great to see Maddy show real character growth - and accept family comes before defending Hitler. And for anyone who thinks this is propoganda - if accepting someone who for they are is propoganda to you, then you're never going to be able to accept yourself or figure yourself out either.

cringe, forced & not even close to 90's narrative
hotrobinproductions20 January 2024
The Jesus bits with Ted & Johnny was hilarious, but with that aside, this episode takes a massive plunder down the toilet, I like the idea of this show exploring other characters, and taking those risks to expand this story using other characters rather than just relying on Ted, this had potential to be the best episode of the season with the premise as well, it just gets bogged down in so much unnecessary political drama, it's not smart, it's not jokey, it feels much more preachy, they continue to over exaggerate toxic characters to fit into a political satire, meanwhile how the other character thinks are not over exaggerated and are just normal human beings.

Almost all of these political ideas in this episode & preachy presence just feels completely forced & controversial for the sake of it rather than creating a narrative revolving both sides with authenticity, this show just makes you want to put a barrel into your mouth & pull the trigger every time you hear the over the top obnoxious executed character of Matty, it's a complete forced execution as well that just blows itself out of proportion, if that's how his character is there's ways of doing it.

I thought I was supposed to be in the 90's, this thing feels like 2024 preachy toxic unnatural forced political satire that forces you to move your characters stance to the other without feeling human moments. Towards the end they try to redeem it with her sitting talking to matty but it just ain't it, this delivery ain't funny, the truck is obnoxiously unfunny as well.

A drop from 30,000 feet
andyhilton-970-32277416 January 2024
Have ya ever been on a flight cruising along like nothing could get better? Like no crying babies, comfy seat, bag of chips and full can of Coke good?

Then ya start to feel it. A little rumble here, a little overhead bin shake there.... then BAM! The oxygen masks drop, the engines fall off and all of a sudden you're praying to God for just one miracle to keep you alive cause you already know you're going to hell.

That's what this episode was like for the first season. All season I'm like laugh laugh laugh then that BAM! Drops on my face like a sledgehammer to the nads. "We need to discuss these important issues that we think are important due to our superior Hollywood morality." P. S. Thanks to Boeing for making this illustration so effective.

The writers need to research the 90's better
jonketchum26 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I like the show overall, but the writers seem to occasionally forget when the show is taking place. Blaire often uses her "college wisdom" to be the moral compass and make comments or take a stance on things that people generally weren't doing then. This episode was bad because it centered the whole episode around that.

Blaire is dating an Indian woman. First, they barely touch on her race. I feel like that is something that would have been brought up in the 90's. Second, Blaire explains what being gender fluid is. I don't think that was around then, especially at the mainstream level it is today. Third, she makes the entire Catholic family feel bad for not accepting her. They just changed their entire worldview because a college girl called them Hitler. Most of the country was against it. Republicans and Democrats agreed. Clinton even signed a law protecting heterosexual marriage.

Having said that, if you can get past the inaccuracy and the preachiness, it does have some funny moments and a clever twist.

Preachy and pushy episode in otherwise hilarious show
j-witschge20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about Matty and Blaire clashing over their political views. Specifically on Matty having troubles understanding and accepting Blaire's romantic relationship with another girl.

Most comedy series fail to make an episode on a polarizing subject both funny and insightful, and this episode is no exception. The tone of the episode is pushy and preachy, which is detrimental to episode's comedy. Both sides of the argument are portrayed poorly, as one side is portrayed as dumb while the other side is, perhaps unintentionally, portrayed as unlikable, which in turn is detrimental to how impactful the episode delivers its message.

Finally, this is supposed to be a comedy series. However, the jokes take a very cramped back seat to the message the episode preaches. However, the episode did manage to make me chuckle once.

I had to turn this episode off...
puccigary15 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Horrible episode and by far the weakest of this season. The truck sounded the way that democrats think republicans sound like and how republicans think. Don't know if it was meant to be funny, but it was pretty cringe. Giorgia Whigham made a case for the republicans by sounding like a crazy democrat who just blurts out catch phrases without any substance behind it. They "tackled" immigration, and affirmative action with Giorgia Whigham being pro to both these subjects even though we all know NOW what works and what does not seen to work. So basically Danny was right, it was Giorgia Whigham being the racist in the episode as funny as it sounds!

Ruined by current day politics
TopperHarley2917 March 2024
This episode was terrible. I've enjoyed most of this show, but this was complete trash ruined by current day politics. This takes place in the 90's, but we get rhetoric and buzzwords that weren't prevalent in that decade. No matter how hard they try to mask it with references to Bill Clinton, it still comes off as current day and it completely takes me out of the universe this show sets up. They treat issues like gay rights and execute it in a way that's very 2024. Did anyone say fluid in the 90's? Doubt it.

The problem isn't even that this episode got political. The anti-conservative snark was a little annoying, but it's par for the course with Seth shows and I can let it slide if it's funny, but this episode wasn't. It was very preachy and portrayed in a way that's not realistic in this show's climate. If you wanted this show to tackle current day politics, maybe don't make this show take place in the past.

It feels like a strong case of not knowing your audience as every episode before this one plays off as a funny, care-free comedy that comes off as a more of a feel-good comfort show with some of that trademark politically incorrect humor that Seth MacFarlane is known for. Then 6 episodes in, we get this botched attempt at social commentary. Now there were a few off-hand remarks delving into politics before, but they were small jokes and they didn't really feel all that out of place to me. They were jokes and I laughed, but here it felt like a preachy lecture and feels like it went against the tone the show was setting up.

Started off funny, but the more it went on, it devolved into preachy garbage. I really hope this episode was just a fluke because this was pretty bad.

Politics will be the death of this show.
eithan-wwe-cena19 February 2024
This series has been incredibly amusing so far, but this episode took a disappointing turn. When I watch shows like Ted, I'm seeking entertainment and escape from political discussions. However, this episode seemed more like a platform for the writers' political views rather than genuine entertainment or comedy. It felt forced and out of place in the context of the season. While the rest of the season has been fantastic, this episode was a letdown due to its heavy-handed political messaging. If the creators want the show to thrive and secure another season, they should focus on more suitable storylines for the characters instead of injecting unnecessary politics into every aspect. It's important for everyone to have their own opinions, but I prefer not to feel like I'm being brainwashed while watching a comedy series.

Rollercoaster and Pedestrian (put a fork in it)
kyrenaika19 January 2024
Why is it that one personality type always feels that another personality type should be the one to apologize for being who they are? They demand that they be accepted for who they are, yet cannot accept others for who they are. They think everyone should come around to their way of thinking, the very thing they have fought against for the past 100 years. They have become that which they fought against. They refuse to accept this, but neither did their predecessors. I don't know which is worse, but I don't want to be associated with either.

They've fallen for the oldest trick in the book, divide and conquer. And that Seth has succumbed to the whims of the mob in having to shoehorn this pedestrian laden nonsense in the midst of a hilarious first season is absolutely pathetic. There are some genuine laugh out loud moments in this episode, but just when the ride is at its heighth, it hits a brick wall and there's no picking up the pieces.

We've been bludgeoned with this codswallop in every flicking show for the past several years. Put a fork in it. It's done.

Unwatchable garbage
unitywithinme9 March 2024
Heads up, if you found this entertaining put down the crack pipe and check into rehab.

This father character is such a tired cliche it's just lazy writing.

After watching this garbage episode, I'm rethinking about this show. I mean a talking Ted bear is one thing but a talking trunk. Just when you thought modern comedy couldn't get any lower on the IQ scale, this sets the bar lower than I ever thought possible. Based on this episode alone they should cancel the series. This show seems to just get worse as the episodes go on. I won't know if that's true cause I've given up on this show after this train wreck of an episode. Everyone involved should be ashamed.
