Something missing
noawareness16 October 2023
It feels like something is missing and it has nothing to do with the voices. The voices are fine. Things change. It feels odd sometimes and it initially feels weird to hear the slight differences but it doesn't impact on the show. What does seem to be missing though, is the improvisational nature of the delivery, which the show has been built on from season 1. It has been fading over the last few seasons but it's completely gone now and it's clearly something we would only ever get from Justin Roiland. This isn't a terrible episode but it's a weak opener. They really needed to prove a point with this episode and they didn't do that. It feels like a mid-season filler episode, billed as some kind of comeback. Hopefully they can play to their strengths, going forward, rather than trying so hard to prove they don't need Justin Roiland to be a success.

Slapdash Effort
cwigtil-7562416 October 2023
This episode is basically written like a middling Simpsons celebrity special-guest episode. It really feels like this episode's been re-written to purposely make fun of Roiland after his departure from the show. There are a lot of callbacks to previous episodes that aren't really jokes so much as references. For a show that's headed by someone known for his cleverness, this episode misses the mark. I probably laughed...once?

The replacement voice actors were clearly still learning the nuances, and calibrating them well is on the director & Harmon. Cardoni does the best with the challenging character of Rick. The main failure of this premiere is the lack of joy that the actors are bringing to the roles, even some of the regulars.

The animation is still stellar, so I'm giving the episode 5 stars for that, but some of the POVs are still questionable, such as one shot involving Mr. PB that undercuts the suspense of a life-threatening situation necessary for the subsequent joke.

I'm pretty bummed that this show's quality is seeming to suffer yet again. This feels a lot like the Season 4 dragon episode, and I'm wondering if this is just an intentional passive drop in quality to help the show get canceled.

Disappointing
dbddhytdc16 October 2023
It goes far beyond the new voices. Rick felt like an entirely new character, Morty was barely even in the episode, and the plot was irrelevant to the main story line. After all the setup from last seasons finale and the fact that Rick and Morty premiers usually advance the plot the most, I was super bummed out when I began to realize this was just a lame story about Mr PoopyButthole getting his wife back (which he didn't even, she hated him afterwards). I'd be lying if I said I don't fear for the future of this show; everyone was so caught up by the fact that Rick and Morty were gonna sound different that they completely disregarded Roilands influence on the show itself. Feels like it's making a shift towards a more pg-13 demographic and my god does it suck.

Warning: Spoilers
A very odd episode to kick off this new season. Usually the openers are much stronger than this. And usually with either an actual Rick and Morty adventure or at least something that moves the plot or overarching arc forward.

But it's a decent episode. It was nice to see Mr. Poopy-Butthole in a more central role than usual, and the episode offered me plenty of laughs honestly.

I will admit that I actually kind of see where some folks have been complaining for the past few seasons though. Some of the running gags fell flat, like the lawnmower joke at the very end.

Also, not that this is a dealbreaker, but why the Predator? Or Hugh Jackman? Very odd creative choices.

The change is voice actors was never going to be a dealbreaker for me either, and I honestly couldn't even tell for a vast majority of this episode and ep.2 that there was a change at all. Some cracks here and there, but I think both Caldoni and Belden are going to do an alright job!

Animation is still really good and I think everyone still feels very in-character.

Overall, a pretty decent episode with some good laughs and a plot that I thought was weird for this series, but still pretty fun and not totally implausible. I wasn't under the impression that Roiland was writing the last however many seasons so I'm not worried about his departure at all.

Eh, it wasn't bad
ericstevenson29 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was the first episode replacing the characters voiced by Justin Rioland. Does it make some fourth wall break as to what happened to Justin? Nope, it does make one at the beginning, but it's nothing to do with the controversy. This episode features Mr. Poopybutthole trying to get Poopy Jr. Back. I will admit I wasn't that impressed with story, but it was still good. Everyone seems to disagree with me.

It's revealed his first name is Wayne. I'm pretty sure it's that and he didn't change his name, like some people think. I thought it was quite funny at the end with all the characters fading. The bit with the lawnmower was great too. Wait, isn't the standard Mr. Poopybutthole dead when that last Earth was destroyed? I guess they're expendable too. ***

Don't say season 7 will suck because of this, but this did suck.
carlsbagy21 October 2023
This episode is unfair for season 7 - I mean it's unfair to give this as our first real look. While it's not season 6 bad, this was a horrible debut. The rest of the season actually looks amazing! This is just going off the trailers, but season 7 is looking great. This isn't it, though. It's just a bit too much of a random episode. It's like having a Rick and Jerry episode, then swapping jerry with Mr. P. B. And then adding a bunch old characters who were written for jokes, not to carry the episode. Again, Rick and morty season 7 doesn't look like it'll suck; far from it, but this really just isn't the best way to debut it.

It's happening again ...
dominionmails22 October 2023
I'm in my 40s, raised with the Simpsons (and DBZ) and this episode gave me the same feeling when I gave up on Homer&co 15/20y ago.

Like for the Simpsons, this show has lost its mojo over time, but I would have argued was still good.

But this episode is the stereotype of a show turned sour.

No real story, just a pretext for some random stuff to happen in a succession of shorts gags. Bring some random hollywood star to make up for the boring story and do another set of short gags. Then bring some random TV/Cinema reference and do another set of random short gags...

In the end, now it looks a lot like the cheap recipe of American Dad or Family guy but worse.

Don't Cry Because It's Over; Smile Because It Happened.

Rick and Morty: Heistcon Meets The Hangover
joetyestudent17 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

I've had to review to get this higher than a 6.5. There has been a lot of concern over the new series following the new voice actors, but it was almost unnoticeable - they've casted it very well.

Nostalgic characters, familiar storyline taken to another level, somewhat similar to the heist episode but through the lens of a personal intervention for My Poopy. Perhaps it was a test to show the depth of the new voice actor's skills?

Storyline very much a continuation on where we left off, and clearly demonstrates whats to come in the season.

I personally thought that it was a recipe for a success and most importantly, it had me lolling. The lawnmower scene was hilarious (make sure you are watching post-credit)

Okay Story, Pretty Good Voices
morganwilliams-2292717 October 2023
I didn't mind this episode! I know that Dan Harmon and the team were already writing season 9 when the controversy happened, so none of the episodes in this season have been affected by the absence of Justin, writing wise.

I think Morty only had a line or two but it wasn't bad.

Halfway through the episode I had forgotten they replaced Rick. For two actors who don't have a lot of experience doing voice work, I think they did a pretty good job!

It was just an okay episode because it was just an okay episode plot wise. I don't love where they took Mr. Poopybutthole's character, but it was nice seeing some old faces again.

I'm still hopeful for the rest of the season.

Something's off.. and it's not Justin Roiland.
billypoole-3907116 October 2023
I really don't mind Justin Roiland being replaced, it seems as though the new voice actors are at least an 8.5/10 in their efforts, so that's great.

The problem is the writing and the flow though. There seems to be something very off with episode 1 of this new season. It's like the show's IQ has lost about 20 points.

It lacks the rapid fire genius of delivery. Everything seems to be slowed down or just not quite hitting the spot.

Rick and Morty is unique as an animated show. And for whatever reason it feels very vanilla today.

Maybe somebody smarter than myself can dive into it and explain why.

Fun and solid episode
okkebos-0958216 October 2023
The fact that this title (at the time of writing this review) has only a 7.2 is ridiculous. This makes it the fifth-lowest-rated R&M-episode so far. The episode has just been released, and knowing IMDb, the rating might decrease some more. This could potentially place it in the top 3 worst-rated episodes. In my humble opinion: undeserved.

This is a solid Rick&Morty episode. I was entertained and had a few laughs. It's not the best episode of the series, but it's far from the worst. Mr. Poopybuttwhole is a fan favorite and het gets a lot of screentime. It's also nice to see Rick's gang back together. There was one disappointment, though. After the events of 'Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort,' I expected more friction in the friendship between Rick and Birdperson. The latter seemed to have transitioned from a side character to a major plot element, only to return to just being a side character again.

Though, the main reason of the low rating is probably because of the new voices. Yeah, they sound (a little) different. However, this does not nullify the writing, story, and animation of the episode. After the first minute, it didn't even bothered me anymore. It's unfortunate that Justin Roiland no longer plays part, but it's because of good reasons. Guess we'll just have to accept it, and try to enjoy what's next.

Don't let all the negativity trick you.
tharpyharp17 October 2023
I've been a huge Rick and Morty fan for a long time. This is the first review I've ever written for any show or movie. Was this the best episode? No. Was it the worst? Also no. My brother has been in Africa for like a year and a half and was not aware that Justin Roiland no longer voices the characters. And I decided not to tell him just to see what would happen. And he didn't notice anything even remotely wrong with the voices. So all the negativity comes from people thinking they hear something wrong but it's just them knowing that the voices are different people so they think they hear a difference. It was a fine episode solid 6 and a half to 7.

Definitely not a good start
JlxOF16 October 2023
Firstly, for the voice actors, I think Morty is good enough, but can't say same about Rick I don't feel same about him when I listen there is clearly a difference for his voice tone. Anyway about the episode, it's kind of boring to me because there is nothing to get excited about I mean at some point I don't know what I am watching and what is going on the screen. Firstly, the jokes are not good secondly how could a premiere of Rick and Morty episode doesn't contain Mortey I mean he names the show dont like the storytelling don't like the jokes don't like the voice actors and bunch of couple things definitely not a good start.

Rick & Morty Season 7 Ep. 1
dstinson-8694316 October 2023
Let me start off by saying I'm a long time fan of Rick & Morty, seen every episode at least 4 times. I came into this episode with some anxiety given the change in voices and seeing how that destroyed my enjoyment of Solar Opposites. This episode is in my opinion a step in the wrong direction and a turn from what makes Rick and Morty special. Conceptually I like the episode, Rick getting the old band of friends together for an episode is a great avenue that hasn't been explored in the series yet. Unfortunately the jokes don't land and the episode feels foreign and left me feeling that Rick and Morty may be reaching the end of the road for original fan base and viewers.

Decent way to start this season
mahlicaajaib16 October 2023
I liked this episode more than the last season, seasons six premier: Mr Poopybutthole is always fun and endearing when he shows up and its about time he had an episode focused on him.

Ricks new voice is not actually that irksome, only that he loses edge in some parts, but you become so engrossed in the story, its hardly a problem There were some fun jokes and moments with the gangs antics in this episode, however I gave this rating because it was fairly average, decent and not that mind blowing, or that creative when the show is it its best, but it is a fun time so you should still watch the episode.

The voices aren't bad, as an opener it was alright
blakecodding17 October 2023
This was certainly no rickshank redemption but it was a decent opening episode. The plot was alright with a pretty good conclusion. Not sure why they introduced the idea of rick prime again at the start of the episode (is in the trailer not a spoiler) but didn't touch base much into rick prime at all, you could maybe inference that from the title of the episode "how poopy got his poop back." so not sure why they included the part with rick prime. The episode overall wasn't bad in my opinion, but it wasn't fantastic. I can get used to the voices quite easily and would like to know what you guys think of them, they certainly aren't 100% but we'll see. Also, I don't think they've even revealed the new VA's yet.

Very Poor
sleepfire-3081016 October 2023
Rick and Morty is one of my favorite shows, but it gets poorer with each season. Although there are many reasons for this, it still cannot explain why this series has turned into a meaningless ordinary cartoon that constantly repeats itself. Dan Harmon failed to keep this series stable, as he did with Community.

Considering the potential of this series, much better things could have been done than this. As concepts such as parallel universes were brought to the fore more and more each season, family themes etc. Were completely lost. And the pointlessness of the series also increased .But I would still like to point out that I didn't get bored while watching it.

I enjoyed How Poopy Got His Poop Back
jedilord-0843521 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
My first impression about Season 7 Episode 1, was Rick and Morty continue to have their groove. I enjoyed the episode.

I didn't particularly care that there were new voice actors. They sounded close enough to Rick and Morty. If I didn't know there was a problem with Justin, and that new actors were brought in, I'd hardly notice. Which I think is a good thing.

Stories and characters made Rick and Morty great. And while the voice actors gave their characters, personalities, and I wouldn't want them changed, if it was possible; the fact is, the writing is half the reason why Rick and Morty, succeeds. And continues to succeed.

The plot for how poopy got his poop back was classic Rick and Morty. It was well-written. I loved seeing Rick's friends. I love Mr. Poopybuthole. Enjoyed seeing Bird Person again. Great to see BP's kid is around! Then there's Squanchy, of course! It's been a minute and good thing he is still alive. And Gearhead. GENE! What a great addition to Rick's gang!

And Hugh Jackman! I hope Jackman joins in on future adventures with Rick's gang too.

I laughed quite a bit during the entire episode. I found the mythology growing to be excellent. Sometimes you don't have to focus on Rick Prime or the President to laugh and have a great adventure.

I think there is a clear progression of great storytelling from season 1 to 7. I think the series grew quite a bit and was better starting with season 3. Yeah I did enjoy seasons 1 and 2, I think the great sci-fi mythology with the galactic empire, rick prime, Space Beth and more, for me is why I keep coming back.

I look forward to more fun episodes and discovering more of the mythology around Rick and Morty!

Unremarkable episode, but new voice acting good enough to go (mostly) unnoticed
grantit417 October 2023
Surprised that the Roiland replacement voices aren't too distracting, but I got to say the writing feels formulaic and safe. Maybe this was by design in order to better transition into this new cast and the writing will be better from here on...

Points for getting Hugh Jackman to voice himself even though the character was a bit much, he's a good sport and doesn't mind taking jabs at himself. Still, felt gimmicky and a bit forced.

Overall, I think Rick and Morty overall will be fine as long as the writers don't worry too much about appeasing an audience that likely will cry about it not being as funny as it used be (assuming this isn't true), and that they keep riding the edge of what is and isn't acceptable to joke about.

This was painful to watch. Felt like a cheap AI generation
josh_jenkins16 October 2023
This was as exciting as watching fingernails grow. The narrative, without offering a semblance of substance or depth to rescue it, landed like a cheap knockoff. No substance at all. Everything felt inauthentic and wrong.

This episode is a stark reminder that even the mightiest of shows can falter. Here's hoping "Rick and Morty" finds its footing again and returns to the caliber we all know and love.

The writing here reeked of an unmistakable cheapness, as if every line of dialogue and each plot progression was plucked not from a well of creative inspiration, but rather, from the low-hanging fruit of worn-out tropes and recycled ideas.

Not that bad
philipplund17 October 2023
Yeah ,there are new writers and new voices ,but the Humor is good and the Story is a Little Bit weird, but not that Bad. Its ok i guess. Jerry is Jerry. MrPoopyButhole is drunk. And Rick wants to help an old friend. At all:not a 10/10 but i think its a solid start with potential. For me a 7/10 or 8/10. I think the people are giving the Episode just a 6/10 ,because they are not happy with the new voices. But i think they did not that Bad. I Hope the following Episodes are getting better and i Hope the fight against Rick Prime is getting epic. How i already Said nice start into the Season and dont be to critical to the new voices.

Everything is fine and even excellent
TheDevilScroll16 October 2023
The voices still sound right, the atmosphere still feels right, and Dan Harmon and the new group of writers who made Season 6 great pull out all the heavy guns, including hosting Hugh Jackman in an episode of Rick and Morty, to open Season 7 properly. I couldn't ask for better than that and hope that from here we will only continue to get episodes at this level and beyond. Rick continues to behave exactly as we expected him to, and the punches about the canon that continues to take shape never stop making me laugh. I think as we move forward with the conceptual concept of turning Rick and Morty into a canonical series rather than one that goes from episode to episode, we discover more gems and enjoy more ideas that we haven't thought of before. For me personally, as I said, it's very, very intriguing.

Almost Rock Bottom
arcada-3499917 October 2023
Sadly, althought it seemed to be the biggest issue facing this season, my 5 star review has nothing to do with the new voice actors, and actually I think they did a great job (given the circumstances) at voicing the two characters. No, actually this episode was just boring, it wasnt funny, didnt bring any new ideas to the table and really just came off a bit dull. I wil continue to watch this season to see how it progresses but I am not impressed at what should have been a headstrong cold open, that just turned out to be a withered shell of the shows former glory. I fear that this whole 'Justin Roland hasn't been in the office since season 3' is exaggerated and I think that he had a much greater influence on the writing than adult swim has made out, since so far it is dry and boring, and so much less than the earlier seasons. I for one believe that Roland's skewed mind and perspective probably made him a briliant artist and the rick and morty we once knew will probably never be as funny and clever again.

They've fallen off and it was bound to happen...
aymaantaha17 October 2023
Is anyone even surprised how poor this is. The real plot barely even progresses and these just seem like bland unfunny filler episodes. The writers should just focus on better story writing rather than these plotless events that don't add to the main story.

Overall review continued: "Rick and Morty" is a show that has gained a cult following, but it may not be for everyone. Some viewers find the humor to be excessively crude and chaotic, making it difficult to follow the storyline. Additionally, the characters can come across as one-dimensional and lacking depth. While it has its moments, the show's overreliance on shock value and nihilistic themes can be off-putting to those seeking a more traditional or heartwarming animated series.

On the verge of falling off
spacerboi16 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost- the voices sound fine. They are not the reason for the 7/10.

The episode starts strong, with the whole family trying to get rid of Mr. Poopybutthole, who has been living in their living room for quite some time. Rick then tries to do it his way but has to contact his old friends soon after, to throw an intervention for Mr. P, who is struggling after his wife left him.

The premise is fine. I guess it's kind of weird to start off a season premiere without focusing on the main characters all that much. What feels really different and odd tho, is the structure. Everything feels kind of disconnected and just barely holds on to the common thread. The stakes are also baffling low, even for a side story.

It just hit me- there wasn't even any b-story this time! This episode in particular would have benefited a lot from one.

I'm staying positive. The season has just started and who knows, maybe it'll pick up the pace.
