Over the top humor that the "Psych" guy brings
jackmeat12 October 2015
My quick rating 5,8/10. First off, let me start by saying I really like the TV show "Psych". OK, that being said, James Rhoday wrote and directed this which is already a plus in my book. For a first film, this offbeat comedy (much more comedy then horror by far) was actually pretty entertaining. Basically 3 people kidnap 6 people at a bar for the soul intention of eating them. And how casual and nonchalant this is makes the whole atmosphere that much funnier. The jokes are often inside jokes, and over the top but still funny. The gore does not disappoint in the slightest. Each death in this movie is original to say the least leading up to a pretty interesting climax. Look forward to more from him and maybe even a sequel?

Human After all
Bali_Loke22 March 2020
This movie is twisted and wrong in all the right ways. Gravy is a fun movie with a lot of gore. It's a stoner flick at it heart. It smacks of Always Sunny, but leads with a Saw-esque theme that lacks the seriousness that most horror films take on. Nice job, cheers all around..!

Dumb Gory Fun
HorrorOverEverything7 October 2015
Going to be honest and say that I really don't have a whole lot to say about this one but I still felt like writing a little bit about it.

It's a pretty simple story about two brothers and one of their girlfriends taking six people hostage so that they can eat them. I liked how nonchalant the killers were about everything and I really enjoyed the overall cartoony/goofy tone of the movie. There were a few times where the over the top humor was a little too stupid, but it worked for the most part. The gore level was fairly high too so that was a plus.

This wasn't anything special but it was pretty entertaining and had a nice light/funny feel to it. A decent time killer for sure.

Awful
bcallnatural19 November 2015
Wow,... must have been the people who invested in this movie that gave it a good review. Loved Psych hence the interest in this movie. Love a good horror flick and my funny bone is healthy but this flick...? Horrible.

It just isn't funny and the gore scenes are stupid. The whole thing is stupid. The plot is weird without you believing in what the characters are doing which adds to the strangeness. You don't buy into the characters....they are badly contrived to the point they don't believe in themselves. Its just plain bad character planning which results in...actors forced into a part that can only result in bad acting. All is just weird and phony.

Don't waste your time. I thought the caliber of Psych would spill over into this movie but far from the mark. If this was the point of the movie to be really disappointing....why?

A pleasant surprise
cwfrauman-716-72105827 January 2016
This is one of those movies you go into thinking you're probably not going to like it for any number of reasons - low production costs, comically misleading trailer, a cast of largely unknown actors - but when you come out the other side it turns out to be a pleasant surprise.

The star actor takes a little getting used to which has more to do with the makeup artist than anything else. She's dressed like a pro football player, for one thing. Padded shoulders, thick black ink smeared across her face. But the writing is way above average which helps carry this delightful miscarriage through to its conclusion.

Two of the actors are actually well-known for their comedic sensibilities. They both are on the side of the lunatics holding up a small-town close-knit family of diner workers (they're not really family but they act like it), one of whom stars in a little show called It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where he assumes the role of a milk- sipping, possibly incestuous, brother of a couple of weirdo antagonists, and the other scored a bit role on stage with Dr. House, a role that he tackles well with more wit than comedy but still spot on. In this movie both shine and graduate with flying colors.

For hardcore traditionalists even though the protagonist is dressed like a football player with sweet moves, the belle of the film is draped in a prize-winning ribbon as if to remind viewers that she's the prettiest girl on the set, but also has fun with a point made long ago by the American short-story writer Edgar Allan Poe who once penned the words 'The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world.' And there's an excellent soundtrack to boot.

However, what really makes this a prize-winning catch is the script-writing, along with a few unexpected twists thrown in there to appease the naysayers and the cynics. It's really a great movie. So if you're out there surfing the web for a new horror flick to watch to pass the time, do not miss this opportunity for laughs, shockin' awesome horror, and good old-fashioned family values with a demented weirdo atmosphere, look no further than Gravy. Personally I filed this movie under chance discoveries. Do with it what you will.

Slight jokes, a lot of gore, that's it
micktfd-113998 December 2018
Don't waste your time unless you just like to see bloody messes, like this movie is. I guess people can't think about defending themselves in any scenario? It's kind of a rip off of "From Dusk til Dawn" w/o vampires or a single intelligent person.

Tasty Enough, But Doesn't Demand Seconds
gavin694222 November 2015
It's All Hallow's Eve. A trio of costumed misfits with very special dietary requirements seizes a Mexican cantina and force the staff to engage in a late night of gaming, food and libations. The only caveat is what's on the menu.

Noel Murray says the film "seems little more than a lark for all involved, not a project with anything to say." That sums it up rather nicely. The gore is good enough for horror fans, the humor is there at times. And we have plenty of B-list actors in this thing. But what is the point? Unlike other recent horror-comedies (most notably the hugely successful "Tucker and Dale"), this never really seems to go anywhere.

Is it worth a look? Sure. James Roday is a fun guy, and it is great to see him venturing more into writing and directing. But I feel like we needed so much more here.

Tries so hard to be funny, fails
wheezeew6 August 2016
This movie tries so hard to be funny and alternative and smart, but every joke falls flat. The screen writing is going for funny outrageous sarcastic, but nothing in it is funny enough to rise above trying too hard. For example, one character calls another a "Barry Gibb looking dude." That's supposed to be funny, but the guy hardly looks like Barry Gibb, so the joke doesn't work. If she had called him, "you fatter, unfunny Paul Rudd-looking dude, that might have been a little funny.

The gory parts look too cheap to be scary, and the unreal and lame dialogue makes it impossible to care about what anyone says.

It tries to be Eating Raoul, but it turns out to be Sharknado - pretty much impossible to sit through. Some good actors, but such weak material that nobody could make a good movie out of it.

Rather enjoyable but too kooky effort to really impress
kannibalcorpsegrinder22 April 2016
Arriving at a Mexican cantina, a group of criminals hold the remaining employees hostage and force them to participate in a series of depraved games intending to devour them afterwards and forcing them to fight back in order to avoid becoming a meal.

For the most part this one here ended up being quite a bit more bizarre rather than outright horror effort. One of the main challenges facing the film is the fact that this one just doesn't seem to be concerned at all with logic or coherent motives, making for quite a challenging time here trying to figure out what's happening here. The initial plot of choosing this particular restaurant doesn't come up, how long the group's been doing this or how they even turned to cannibalism, making this so confusing as to their motives that it doesn't really strike any kind of chord at all because the inherent goofiness really undermines how they could've been portrayed. By playing them as frightening figures in an absurd situation and then gone off-the-wall with the goofiness could've been an enjoyable time here, but instead we get completely goofy characters acting in a totally confusing manner which really undermines this one considerably. That said, the goofy humor and rather jarring tonal shifts between everything here is another problem, as on the one hand there's certainly an attempt to make them seem tough and imposing with the way they hold the group hostage and begin spelling out the different games with them, but then it goes for goofy off-the-wall humor with the utterly irritating and endless manners in which they overtake the restaurant, deal with the group and basically just the very hard- boiled nature of not taking anything seriously despite the entire purpose for being there being to kill and eat them. That alone should've made this a lot more chilling in nature, but it's jarring tonal shifts make for a wholly off-beat experience. Still, there's a lot of positives on display here, which begins with the rather impressive kills here resulting in some rather brutal and graphic kills throughout that are just so silly while also being admittedly quite unique as well, and the fact that there's quite a large amount of really bloody deaths within here. As well, the comedy featured in here does get in a few good moments here where it generates a laugh due to the outrageousness of the situations presented here and really giving this the part of the film's overall best quality in the exciting and enjoyable pace here. This one doesn't really slow down all that much and stays involved for the most part, keeping this one going forward with a lot of interesting confrontations, lots of action and a generally fun air about it that gives this one plenty of bizarre and really entertaining parts to it as it whips through the zany situations. There's still some some problems here, but it's not that bad.

Rated R: Extreme Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and minor sexual acts.

Well-conceived fun in a gory setting.
furfur-12 October 2015
What a roller-coaster ride!

I was not expecting that much watching this movie. I thought about a bad C movie with a cheap producing. Already in the first minutes I realized that my thoughts were wrong.

I really enjoyed the movie very much. It's an elegant mix of comedy and horror, where the classification in the one or the other scope is not always obvious. Both genre are successfully assisted by the whole techniques and instruments of film making.

The story is pretty flat but that is not the point of the movie and you won't miss it. The focus is much more on the presentation of the different scenes, underlined by some suitable/ non suitable music, and good camera views. Last but not least the screenplay is pretty smart, so that you won't always know if you what you are watching is supposed fright or make you laugh.

Thank you for the experience mister Roday.

great late night stoner flick
wardendno-3137320 October 2017
Great gore, good kink, funny, low budget. Very unusual production/direction that I have not seen before. REALLY GORY. What else could you want in a potential cult film? More people need to see this. Also I would highly recommend "The Revenant" (2009). Same vein of unappreciated cult potential.

They couldn't get Charlie Day.
tannerknox7 September 2019
Michael Weston's character is so clearly supposed to be originally cast by Charlie Day. The movie is cheap and unfunny, whether or not they could get Charlie Day, but I can't get over the fact that this movie clearly wanted to have Charlie Day in it.

5/10 just for the hot chick
mistela675 December 2017
Yowza...the girl that's in that pink dress just does it for me. Wow, she's fine. Face, body, voice, all of it. I was losing interest in this movie until they showed that scene when she was talking on the phone and she turns her back to the camera and pulls out her wedgie. Yummy, yum, yum!

Oh, what about the movie? Horrible. Over-written, meaning drawn out and very ineffective dialogue. Annoying male characters. Roles by well established and talented actors eliminated too soon. Bad acting all around. Not funny, not scary, not anything.

Now, back to the hot chick in the pink dress...

Idiotic.
robertolopes-111 January 2021
You might like this if you are a 13-year old... might.

There's absolutely NOTHING to praise. It's goofy (but in a bad way), it's gory (also pretty lamely done), and that's pretty much it.

It's not funny. It's not scary. It's just not entertaining. A waste of time, really. I feel sorry for those who worked on this. I'm sure the crew and cast thought it would turn out better than this silly fest.

It doesn't even deliver in the gross-out department. It's so tame in comparison to other cannibalistic horror flicks...

Skip it.

horrible
taurusevd26 September 2017
This movie is a complete waste of time and a total turd. Anyone who thinks this is worth watching is an idiot. Not funny, clever, or compelling in any way. Avoid at every opportunity. Shark Babes has more to offer and is a better use of your time. Then again, just about anything is better than suffering through this piece of trash.

You Love It Or Hate It- I LOVED IT
sloppy_tuna11 April 2017
Psych Fans beware...this is NOT anything like Psych- it IS however and awesomely fun gorefest brought to us by a fabulous (and clearly influenced as a child by the awesomely fun and ridiculous 80's horror decade that made anyone who grew up in that decade slightly demented in a wonderful way) James Roday. If you love Evil Dead (all of them)Reanimator (and Bride of)Killer Clowns from OuterSpace,Fright Night, American Werewolf in London...goofy gore laden fun- then this is for you. I really enjoyed this movie. The cast was AMAZING there is not a single person in this that isn't fantastic. If weird, dark, sick, funny humor is your jam-then THIS is your jam. Keep an eye out for the LOL funny cameo by James and Dule which was the icing on the already delicious cake of a movie that this was. Check your morals and high standards at the door, kick back and enjoy.

"You are what we eat" - Love this twisted movie so much!
UniqueParticle19 August 2019
One of the best horror movies in my opinion! So much fun, filled with trivia, and disgusting behavior while having several comedic parts. I have seen this once a while back and loved it then too. Also everyone in it is beautiful especially the women; plus Michael Weston and Jimmi Simpson are a couple of my favorite actors!!

NO SUBSTITUTION FOR BROWN SUGAR AND ENTHUSIASM
nogodnomasters3 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a horror cult comedy and is not for everyone. Anson (rhymes with Manson), his brother Stef (Jimmi Simpson) and Stef's sadistic GF Mimi (Lily Cole) take a restaurant crew prisoner and plan to eat them. The six victims are tied to chairs while a wildcard is forgotten and unattended to. Stef tells them they plan a "pseudo European gangster style slumber party."

The brothers are terribly likable with funny lines. We get to know the victims and they are all great characters, especially Gabourey Sidibe. The Mexican food place has a French chef (Lothaire Bluteau) whose insults are "surprisingly colorful.'

The film uses "Night Court" and other obscure references that even the cast didn't understand. (I watched the commentary, which I normally don't.) Sarah Silverman had a minor part and only filmed for a day. I would recommend avoiding trailers as they show people dying which may be a plot spoiler for some. DVD cover is not a spoiler for a change. Great rock sound track. Katrina and the New Waves never sounded so good.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Thought this was a fkn scream
ren-rogers26 September 2021
It feels like this movie might have been originally written for the stage? Awesome if so, particularly if they ever published the script, because it would be a cracker to produce.

I can see why it has mixed reviews, given the very specific sweet spot of obscure film references plus 80s-era non-CG gore plus the self consciously snarky machine style dialogue that is very much of the 90s but folks, this movie is SO much fun.

If you grew up on a diet of 80s and 90s horror and enjoy fast paced absurdist comedy I definitely recommend this tiny bleeding gem.

Crazy comedy / gore movie from the f'd up mind of Roday
Dottsylove21 September 2021
A movie which does not dumb down its characters. Vocabulary is refreshingly in the upper echelon.. Annoyingly Roday has a doppelganger that looks EXACTLY like him and I'm guessing on purpose. (To trick people into thinking he has a big part - he doesn't) Actually made you feel a little sad for the baddie which is no easy feat. Was only going to give this a 5 cause cannibal gore flicks are not my deal but then got to thinking --There is not much to fault in this film except the lack of Psych characters. It is pretty original. That being said I give it an 8 out of 10.

This movie deserves way more credit then what people are giving it! I see other movies that are just plain dumb and they give them reviews like if you don't see it your life isn't whole. It's GrindHouse meets Apatow= Grindatow
