For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)

Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

For a long time, Tim McGraw thought he could benefit from taking six months off. Even before music became his career, he had always had a job; when country stardom took over, his workload only increased. He was perpetually on the road, supporting his albums and hits like “My Best Friend,” “I Like It, I Love It,” and “Real Good Man.” But when 2020 and the pandemic set in, he was forced to test out his theory.

It’s true: Younger actresses always get the good parts.

Back in 2015, James Roday directed the restaurant-set horror comedy Gravy, co-starring Jimmi Simpson, and for the March installment of Blumhouse's Into the Dark anthology series, Roday is re-teaming with Simpson for Treehouse, which is featured in a chilling new trailer.

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

Animals live among us, often with us, some despite our interference in their habitats. They’re independent organisms that are often subject to our rules. This is especially true when it comes to television.
How we use and portray animals on TV perhaps reveals more about ourselves than the qualities they contain. Are they brought in to round out a nuclear TV family, or do they have greater narrative significance? Do they have personalities or are they plot devices that advance the story, and then forgotten? Do characters regard them with any real feeling?

IndieWire examined how the animal kingdom fared on our screens this year from a storytelling point of view, and determined which portrayals were the most significant. Because of this narrative aspect, we focused on two types: fictional animals whose characters were created for the purpose of the show, and non-speaking animals.

"We're gonna eat you guys." A cannibal horror comedy set on Halloween night, Gravy has been slated for an October 2nd limited theatrical release and an October 6th Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD release from Shout! Factory. This week on the couch we have James Roday and Jimmi Simpson watching The Cat o' Nine Tails. James is best known as Shawn Spencer on Psych, which recently wrapped up its eight-year run. He just finished his feature directorial debut, a horror-comedy called Gravy. Jimmi is best known as "that guy who you've seen in everything." Some of his recent projects include House of Cards, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Knights of Badassdom. The Cat o' Nine Tails was only the second film directed by horror auteur Dario Argento. A rather straightforward crime thriller starring Karl Malden as a blind journalist, Cat o' Nine Tails is considered a giallo film, a sort of stylized Italian mystery film that takes its name from the cheap pulp mystery novels of the first half of the 20th century. "Giallo" is Italian for "yellow," and pulp paperbacks originally used cheap, yellow covers.

The sixth annual Friars Club Comedy Film Festival is back with a bunch of hilarity-centric features, docs and shorts, running April 1-5. This year's opening night film will be the world premiere of James Roday's "Gravy," the "Psych" star's directional debut. The dark comedy follows the Halloween horror-chaos that ensues after odd group of characters order a different kind of dish at a Mexican cantina. "We're excited to bring back the film festival, due to popular demand," said Eric Johnson, executive director of the fest. "For an opening film, we're looking for something unique, daring and funny, with a fresh and original take on the comedy genre, and James Roday¹s film hits all the marks." The Festival's centerpiece will be the premiere of co-director Howie Mandel's documentary "Committed," which follows comedian Vic Cohen on a 13-year quest for success. Closing the event will be the New York...

Bromance is out, romance in. With USA dramedy Psych wrapping its eight-season run this month, star James Roday has set his followup series project, signing on as the male lead of CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot Good Session. Written by John Hamburg and Matt Miller and directed by Hamburg, the project revolves around a happy couple, Joel (Roday) and Lindsay, who go to a therapist to help them decide if they should have a baby but quickly discover they have more to discuss. Roday’s Joel is a dedicated middle-school guidance counselor who thinks his marriage to Lindsay (Tbd), a jet-setting executive, is a happy one — but when they disagree about whether the time is right to start a family, they begin the painful, funny, embarrassing and, ultimately, rewarding, road of couples counseling. For the past eight years on Psych, Roday played faux psychic detective Shawn Spencer who, with the help...

As is creator Ryan Murphy's way, it is not confirmed that the recently booked actresses are going to be witches in the upcoming season of American Horror Story, but with a subtitle of Coven and a largely female cast, I'm playing the odds here.
First up is Angela Bassett, best known for her Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It. Films that FEARnet readers are likely more familiar with include Critters 4, Innocent Blood, Boyz in the Hood, and Malcolm X.
Next is Patti LuPone. Best known for her work on Broadway (she won Tonys for roles in Evita and Gypsy and starred in Broadway productions of Sweeny Todd and Les Miserables, among others), LuPone has appeared in films (Summer of Sam and Heist to name a few) and had memorable guest roles on TV shows like 30 Rock.
